My hair stylist here at Zippy's was Etsuko. She has been one of the only people ever to cut my hair in a way that I did not end up hating. I'd pay her a visit every few months when I came back from school in San Diego. Unfortunately, she went back to Japan (or at least that's what she told me my last visit.)

Now I don't know what to do. Do I go back to Zippy's and try another hair stylist? Who? If not, do I go find another salon?

I have one night stands with hair stylists.  I've never been back to the same hair stylist (except once, and it was only out of desperation).  But I think Zippy's might be the one.  The one I can finally open my heart and hair to without fear or trepidation.

Unfortunately I don't know the name of the hair stylist who cut my hair, but I'm pretty sure she wasn't Chizuru, since all the girls were calling another girl "Chi-chan."  She has medium-length, brown, wavy hair and bangs.  I think she's the only one with that style hair there when I went.  And plus she's super nice and friendly.  If anyone knows her name, please let me know!  :)

Edit: Oh, Meiling C informed me that my hair stylist is Etsuko!  Thanks Meiling!

I brought in some pictures on my iPhone to show how I wanted my hair.  She looked at them and she nodded like she knew exactly what I wanted.  When she started with a dry cut, I was afraid she wasn't going to take it to the level of the pictures and keep my hair in long layers.  After about 40 minutes, she took me to shampoo my hair which was a very relaxing experience.  I was taken back to the chair and given the most fantastic neck and shoulder massage.  So good, it almost came with a happy ending.  No joke.

She then started to cut again and to my relief, that's when she really started to add more layers.  When she was 99% close to finishing the cut, she blow-dried and straightened my hair, taking care to fix lengths of the remaining 1% of any stray strands of hair - so meticulous she was!

$55, not including tip, for probably one of the best haircuts of my life.  They do magic perm (straightening), so I might check that out soon.

I had to find a new stylist in the city to manage my unruly hair because my BF complained that he didn't want to drive across the bridge to Marin!  :*(  To get back at him I made him drive me all the way across town to Zippy's!

Kaoru san gave me a relaxing scalp massage as she washed my hair and a back massage after she finished cutting my hair.  The space is charming inside and out - and I love the full length mirrors!  My haircut cost $55 (without tip).

Excellent hair cut by Etsuko, but the digital perm didn't turn out to be as curly as desired. And I'm not one to idolize Shirley Temple, but I thought maybe they'd be a little curlier?

I'd go back for a haircut and super cute facilities.

I went back today to get a Japanese Hair Straightening... and again 5 Stars.

I have been to many Korean hair salons in southern cali. where I got the magic perm (that's how you call it in Korean), but this time was just different.

My hair is not damaged or burned. It is very smooth and straight (this is the first time that my hair is so straight!!).

Love the hair cut and the massage and you can't beat the price.

250$ tip not included. Best price for a great outcome!!!

I love this place, and I'm quite reluctant to share this salon as I consider this a total gem. But here it goes.  This place is so good, I would not get a hair cut on my vacation in Japan.  Naomi (the owner) is fabulous!  Usually, I do not bring any photos from magazines which I want my hair to look like.  I usually leave that up to Naomi, and each time she does a superb job.

I'm constantly amazed by the way she takes her time to trim my hair.  She's very detailed oriented and you'll appreciate how she approaches your hair to make it look at its best.

Usually, my  digital perm and a hair-cut costs somewhere $160-$180, but totally worth it!

I visited Zippy's this past weekend to get my hair cut... all the way from San Jose.  My appointment was at 4:30, but I got there about 15 minutes early.  I waited.. and waited.. and waited for someone to start working on the mop sitting atop my head.  Luckily, I had Breaking Dawn to keep me busy =)

Fast foward 30 minutes from my appointment time, a nice woman finally helped me.  Her name was Chizuru.  She asked what I would like done and then we went through I book with different hairstyles.  I pointed one out to her and she agreed that it was cute.

Because I have thick hair -- and lots of it, too -- Chizuru thinned it out, but not too much.  She also gave me some cute bangs.  I love, love, love the cut!  She gave me an awesome head massage after the wash and then after my cut and dry, she gave me another awesome back massage.

I would totally recommend this place, specifically Chizuru.  I can't say anything about the other stylists there, but I'm sure they're very good too.

Chopped off 6 inches of hair. Love it.

Was given a dry cut, then had my hair washed, then trimmed and styled.

Enjoyed the scalp massage and hot towel under my neck after my hair was washed, as well as the neck and shoulder massage after my hair cut was finished. I wished all salons offered this!

Didn't read the Yelp reviews carefully so I didn't realize it was cash only. Luckily, Laurel Village and several ATMS are just down the street.

One more thing: It had been many, many months since I had my hair cut, so I liked how I wasn't given all that crap about how I should have my hair cut every 6 weeks. Seriously, who has the time, money and luxury for that?

Zippy's has an amazing space and view in a great location, it feels airy and natural, not that usual hair chemical smell you get in most salons.

Kaoru was very attentive and meticulous. She cut my hair dry and then gave me the best scalp massage during the wash. And it didn't stop there, when I got back into the chair, she continued to massage my shoulders! I have to admit, I got a little scared when she began to raise her hand and was in a mid-hacking motion towards my shoulders, but I survived. I probably could have gone without it bc I was too nervous to relax and enjoy it, points for the generous bonus service anyways.

I ended up with a bouncy long layered style that was very similar to the photo I had brought in. I love that she barely used any styling products and my hair was still shiny and voluminous! After three years, I've finally found a hairstylist.

The first haircut I have ever truly hated.  If I were the kind of person to cry over hair I would be crying.  I am more in shock than anything else.
I think I will get it all cut off to a super short bob to get rid of it.
The haircut took way too long and was done in a style I absolutely hate.  The same phrases I usually use at hairstylists to specify the look I want failed utterly here, perhaps due to language differences.
Very nice people, nothing personal at all - I just absolutely abhor my haircut and will never be back.   The salon also smelled strongly of chemicals, which made me feel sick.
I had a much much better experience at Every 6 weeks in the Castro, and it was significantly cheaper.

Overall I have a pleasant experience with Etsuko.  I'm the type that doesn't bring a picture with specific cut and I like hairstylists to fit my face. So far, Etsuko has done a great job and I got compliments!  Too bad she is no longer there....but she recommended another person so I will try her.

BEST SALON I'VE EVER BEEN TO! EVERYBODY MUST GIVE A TRY HERE!!!

Lady Naomi has created such a beautiful oasis in this Laurel Heights neighborhood. It's so homey and has a beautiful patio.

Enough about the setting. I just got the best hair cut and perm in my whole life! I got a beautiful cut and also a perm called "digital perm". According to my beautiful and talented stylist Chizuru, there are only 2 salons in the whole SF that has this new technology.

It is unlike any other perm or hair curling. Your hair comes out soooooo soft, undamaged, and the best part is that the styling you do after this process will be so easy! You will just need to blow dry your hair as you twirl the end part of your hair with your fingers. Fingers! No irons no hot curler, nothing. Amazing!!! Just blow drying like that gives you some celeb looking big fluffy perfect curls!

My girl Van N told me about this place and I always wanted to go. She was right and so are 10 other reviewers here. What everybody here said is all true. This place is really really really great!

I look so freakin hot now son! What I paid here is worth every single penny!

I got my haircut here a couple of days ago and I love it! Chizuru-san (and I'm sure the rest of the staff) really knows how to cut/style/thin out thick asian hair. She knew how the last stylist cut my hair from four months ago and had no problems giving me the same cut. She's really nice and friendly too! I'm so glad my sister and her hubby found the place and referred me here. Chizuru-san is also a foodie! Double stars! We went to oyaji from her recommendation and it was great!

Their shampoo and mini-massages are also niiiice!

I think I've found my stylist in the bay, which means I don't have to wait until I go to japan (or west LA) to get my haircuts! Hooray!

I moved back to SF 6 months ago and before I came up, I got my straight perm and cut at Ktown, knowing I would have problems finding a good, reliable, inexpensive place in SF.  As I was contemplating what to do for my next cut, been putting it off for the last couple months, I was seriously thinking about taking a weekend trip to LA. Instead, I decided to yelp.  Thank goodness I did.

I found Zippy's and saw all the comments about their expertise with Asian hair.  As an Asian women, I was hopeful.  I called and was able to make an appointment for the next day.  My hair was seriously overgrown but Etsuko did an excellent, I mean superb job of styling and layering my thick mass.  And let me tell you, the shampoo and head message was blissful.  I didn't expect it to be so refreshed.

My hair was simple to do this morning and I feel and have been told, look younger .  What more could you ask for?  I found my salon in SF.  Nice!

I trusted YELP on this one and I got a really cute cut! So the place is  Japanese as the other reviews point out, but I'm not. I figured this place got lots of raves, l've seen some really cute Japanese girls with funky cuts, why not? I was demoralized after I had gone to a place in the Haight that *butchered* my hair and I didn't want to go down to my old stylist who is now in the South Bay.

They don't take anything but cash or check, so be ready for that. I had Etsuko cut my hair and they were able to make a same-day appt. for me. I got about 6-8 inches cut off today, which would be a huge shock to some people, but Etsuko was really helpful, undaunted, and you could tell she was really thinking about the planning of my new a-line cut. She paid attention to details for sure. I loved the back, neck and shoulder massage at the end, as well as the shampooing/conditioning.  The experience was great, I got  a cute little cut, and I'll tell my girlfriends about this place. Felt like a little boutique salon, classy even... a hidden little oasis.... and I haven't had a good haircut under $55 bucks in years.

Next time though, I'll bring my own magazines. Theirs are only Japanese! :-)

Minus 1 star for
- a 12-sized font printed sign taped at the door. I  was driving back and forth trying to look for the salon (which I couldn't see due to the very minimalist approach to signs)
- parking at this location is always a bitch anyways.

I love the inside of the salon. It looks like a home that they converted into a business place. It had made me want to move back to SF and rent one of the victorian houses with dark wooded floors... but I digress. I had a haircut from chizuru. She was very friendly. She's very good at cutting hair. I say this because I think people who cut dry hair are great. She was trained and had worked in Japan before she came here.

I had highlights done and a cut. The color... meh. I would probably go to my old gal. But I love the cut. Love the added layers.

oooh! one cool thing. They don't have this old contraption you put your head under after putting color and it has like steam or heat so that your color would sink in? ( i really don't know what it's called). what they have is this flying saucer-like device, that flies around your head and produces radiant heat. i thought that was amazing.

And yes, bring your own reading material as the place is very japanese (so you can't listen in on conversations or get the latest scoop  while you get your hair did.. not that I do this ;) ). I am not japanese by the way, but I needed a hairdresser that cuts asian hair... and i may have found her!

My friend who always got haircuts from Naomi recommended this place to me. I decided to try this place out (I've gotten my haircuts at Glam Up in the last 3 years or so) so I gave them a call and made an appointment.
Naomi was busy today so my hair stylist was Etsuko. She was very friendly and professional. Since I wanted to test out how good they are, I told her that she can do whatever she wants with my hair - I don't really have a preference on the style. The way she cuts the hair is a little different than what I've experienced before. She begins cutting my hair and about 30-40 mins in, she washes my hair then cut some more. (Usually I get my hair washed first before cutting it)
Anyways, the end result was good. I am very pleased with Etsuko's skills and sense of style.
I would give this place 5 stars, but -1/2 star (reserved) because Etsuko is actually moving back to Japan this coming November which means that I'll have to find another hair stylist either at this salon or go back to Glam Up. And another -1/2 star for the parking - There's only meter parking spots, which kind of sucks because it took over an hour to get my hair done (meter only goes up to 1 hour) which means you have to step out once or twice to put more coins in.
But I will definitely give this place another try sometime in the next few months.

Hands down the best word-of-mouth salon for the particular Asian that maintains a bi-coastal life style. I am not talking NY-California bi-coastal, think large geography, across the Pacific Ocean. I have to thank my sweet co-worker with lovely locks day-in and day-out for this salon gem recommendation.

Zippy's is very up-to-date with Japanese salon tools and techniques. They provide the utmost coverage of your ears and hairline to prevent hair dye from seeping into your skin. This is standard practice in Asian salons, and American salons disregard this to leave you at the mercy of the stylist's meticulous dexterity. The Japanese salon circular heater is absolutely silent to help set hair dye, which is much preferred over the harsh, noisy, and outdated American heat (dust) blower. The scalp, shoulder, and back massage is great to relieve tension that comes from sitting in the salon chair too long.

The salon products are very gentle and nose-friendly. I can show off my new hair do instead of waiting a day or two for the chemical smells to dissipate.

Ask for Kaoru, who has been with Zippy's for a while! Her precise technique and patience replicates any popular Asian hairstyle. Just make sure to set aside about 3-4 hours for dye and cut.

After three years of hair soul-searching, I have finally found a salon home. This place trumps all the places from wallet hemorrhaging places like Edo, Dekko, and Dara Roberts, to affordable at Tonie's, Glam-up in Japantown, and finally dirt cheap at CK on Clement.

Cash only!

Love them!!!

My friend Brianne recommended Naomi because she's been seeing her for 10 years and her hair looks great!

Naomi cut, highlighted, and did a base color on my hair! I showed her a picture and she made it look exactly like the picture!

She had several of her associate's work on me so that it was efficient. They were all so kind and sweet! They even offered me Okinawan Tea that was Hibiscus flavored while I was under the heat lamp. That was very yummy!  They then offered me a drink again where I decided to get a coffee! That was superb coffee! Don't know what the grind was!

By the way, before they die your hair they put mini shower caps on your ears to protect them! Shall I say that they are mini ear caps? Wonderful little inventions I must say!

The shampoo by Kaoru was excellent! The dreamiest head massage ever! Love the hot towels on the forehead and neck to help relax your troubles! Followed by this, was the best Shiatsu neck and back massage ever for a hair salon!!! What a treat to getting your hair done!

Kaoru and I found out that we both go to the same yoga place! We had a great conversation about that!

They even checked my car to make sure it wasn't marked with chalk by the meter maid!!! Unbelievable!!! What service!!!

I drove home feeling beautiful and dreamy. I parked my car and was walking to my door where I bumped into one of my favorite yoga intructors! Rebecca is a brunette version of Fergie! She saw me and immediately commented on my new hair!!! I told her where I went and that a yoga student of Global Yoga works here. She remembers Kaoru even though she says she has not gone to yoga in a long time!

This will be my permanent hair place from now on. I'll be there every 3 months for sure!!!

By far this the cutest, most adorable, and most comfortable salon I set my foot in. Not only that, the atmosphere is very friendly and casual. Hell, if the salon weren't so attractive, I don't think I could've made it in good spirits when leaving.

I got my digital perm here but before I made my appt, I had a long talk with Naomi about the nature of the digital perm and what to expect. I had a really good conversation with her and totally trusted her when I set up the appt.

So I walk in and I wait for about 10 minutes, which isn't too bad. The girl (I guess she's the receptionist/general assistant) double checked with me that I was getting a digital perm. I told her it's my first time and she brought out pictures of what it looked like. I told her that what I wanted didn't match the pictures. She told me 'not to worry and that I will look beautiful.' Worried, I thanked her.

So I show Naomi my pictures while I'm sitting in the chair and she tells me that some of those pictures do not resemble a digital, but instead a regular perm.

Still proceeding with the digital, the perm took me over four hours but overall it was really relaxing that there wasn't a time when I got extremely bored. I actually brought the book "Skinny Bitch" (which by the way, don't waste your money on this book because they are just promoting veganism) which kept me busy majority of the time. They also kept on offering me something to drink which I thought was thoughtful.

Also, like the other reviewers mentioned, they really do shampoo and condition later in the process than the beginning. The general assistant who greeted me washed and conditioned my hair. She asked me what my ethnicity was and I told her I was Korean. She beamed at me and said "I knew it!" I asked her just exactly 'how she knew it' and she said that she 'knew it' because according to her, Korean people have perfect skin. INTERESTING.

Overall I had a nice conversation with Naomi - she's a very cute and adorable lady. We talked about her favorite places in Vegas and the Bellagio, golf, and the history of Yoshi (the guy who used to own Yosh Hair in downtown Palo Alto). Also randomly while taking out my curlers she asked me if I used any teeth whitener. I say no and then she tells me that I have nice skin. Then I just tell both Naomi and the office assistant that I use this Japanese face puff everyday that actually reduced most of my acne. They were both amused and so surprised that I told him that I would bring a puff next time to show them.

When the clock turned six it was time for them to blow dry my hair. Naomi taught me how to hold my hair while blow drying it to give it bigger waves, and how to wind it around my fingers for a different effect. While she's doing this the other stylist, I think her name is Chizuru says something in Japanese and Naomi says that she wishes her hair were like mine. Never in my life have I been so flattered in a salon. I'm not the person who really responds nicely to compliments, either.

Overall I had a great experience here. I felt as though I were invited to someone's home. Actually, I felt more comfortable here than going to a acquaintence/distant friend's home for the first time; but maybe because I'm paying my way into domestic respect. Also, when the weather is great, they leave the back doors open so you have a great view of the small terrace they have.

A few months later, I still like my perm overall. The perm started at my ear so the look is VERY natural. Sometimes, to give it extra volume I pump in some hairspray but my hair feels really damaged when I do. I forgot to mention, but I also got a haircut before the perm and I was VERY satisfied because I only wanted a slight layer and told them I want to leave looking Korean, not Japanese.

Yelp came through for me once again!

I am an female Asian with a chubby face and really fine hair...and not a lot of it either.  Anyways, I've been wanting to get a perm to give my hair some body but didn't want to have a head of massive old school curls.  After some Googling, I came across digital perm and began yelping it.  From there, came across Zippy's...and I am now a happy female Asian with a chubby face and a cool looking digital perm!

Everyone that I encountered here were super cool.   They really care about what they do, how they do it and most of all, they care about what your thoughts are.  Yes, your opinion counts!  It also helps that they are located in a really cute and comfortable space.

I've been without a "my salon" for many years but that has all changed since Thursday.  As now, if asked..I will for sure say "Zippy's".

OMG I totally love this hair salon. LOVE IT! I brought in a magazine today and asked Etsuko to cut the hair style on the magazine, she not only did an amazing job, she surpasses my expectation by FAR! I feel thankful that I read the reviews here so I finally found the place for my hair. After the hair cut I also did hair treatment and hair coloring, which made my hair looking all shiny and silky. After the treatment I bought 2 hair products there: the shampoo and conditioner for colored hair. Total came up to be $185 but I totally love it.

You know what, I forgot to tip them. Since they don't accept credit card I totally forgot there is a tip thing available. I am gonna tip them next time.

PS. Bring cash or check!

Naomi & Zippy's is like my childhood friend... definitely the longest (and arguably the fondest) relationship I've had - 12 years and going strong!

When I moved to SF in the mid-90's, I was still flying back to Seattle every few months to get my haircut.  I just couldn't find a hairstylist that completely "gets" my hair and the style & look I was striving for.  Eight different salons and a year later, I found Naomi & Zippy's and that was the end of my salon trips to Seattle.

Naomi is very skilled and up to date with the latest hair cutting techniques.  I usually bring a picture or magazine cut out of what I want and she nails it everytime.  For $50 a haircut (a bargain in SF!), you get a complete experience.  You start out with a luxurious hair wash accompanied by a delightful scalp massage that lasts for about 10 minutes.  Followed by the haircut, styling and it ends with a indulgent neck, shoulder and upper back massage that will leave you floating after you're done.

Over the years, I have referred many clients to Naomi & Zippy's because I would get many compliments on my hair - even strangers out & about would stop and ask.  I'm not surprised that Naomi's business has flourished mostly from word of mouth & referrals.  She is that good!

On top of that, Naomi and her staff are very warm and friendly and makes every effort to ensure their clients are having a great experience at their salon.  The place is decorated with a feminine touch, bright and cheery.

So if finding an amazing hair salon is on your 2008 to do list, give Zippy's a try.  You may just become hooked and find yourself a little haven like I did.

One of the best hair salons in SF. Japanese women operate this place... Yelpers were great on their reviews so I decided to try it.. I parked in the Laurel Village Shopping Center lot and walked over (went back to Laurel Village to grocery shop afterwards).

Assessed my hair, had a great long shampoo and neck massage with hot towel... Nice cut, massage after cut and a short rinse to ensure that I did not have little hairs falling all over...

Inexpensive for SF, $55 for the cut... I got in and out in about 1.25 hours and it went by like a breeze...

it's hair salon love! I adore Naomi and Zippy's!!

I have typical asian girl hair - long, black, a little stringy, a little wavy, needs lots of body - so I am wary to get it cut in the States, as something has always gone wrong. I have always made it to Taiwan or Hong Kong in time to get the perfect trendy cuts and amazing service.

I finally buckled after my hair started looking dead on the ends -friends referred me to Zippy's and Naomi, so I decided it was a hair emergency.

She was SUPERB. I got highlights, which are a perfect shade of reddish-brown, the wash came with a steamy towel for my neck , a little aromatherapy and a scalp massage, the cut was precise and perfect for my face (bangs, layers, the whole bit), and my service came with a complimentary post-cut massage.

It was Asia deja vu! Plus highlights and cut together ran me about $100. Hello. Deal.

Not to mention the space is UNBELIEVABLY cute -- it has an indoor garden feel, lots of windows and light, adorable furniture. It's just so relaxing and uplifting to sit there for hours.

Parking is a little bit of a hassle and they only take cash or check, but who cares? In my mind -- TOTALLY worth it.

I got a digital perm here just from a friend's recommendation.
Naomi- was wonderful!  I had a haircut + a perm.  We looked at some pictures, and decided a style I want.  Even though it took 3 hours for a cut and a perm, but it looks awesome!  I got so much compliments on my perm, now all my friends wanted to know where is place is.

It's been almost a month since the haircut and really liking my hair, so I think I'll go back to Chizuru in 2-3 months.

I love Naomi and Zippy's!  I haven't tried any of the other stylists, but I bet they're great too.  What an uplifting experience, going to this salon.  It's hip.  It's chic.  And the service is amazing.  You get an indulgent shampoo wash, scalp massage, neck massage, and the best haircut money can buy - for less than $50.  You can't go wrong!

I love this place.  Yeah, I'm a guy getting my hair cut at a salon. :)  It was 45, which is about what I expect.  However...

The place is really nice.  It's Japanese, but you can get by without knowing the language just fine.  Anyway, it's kind of odd because it's a house that has been converted, so you have to ring to be let in to a house and you can't see inside from the door.  When you go in, it's those nice hard wood floors and tall ceilings.  The shampoo area has a lot of windows and the whole place is really sunny.  Good music too:  Louie Armstrong, to Nora Jones, to Classical... it was really relaxing.

Chizuru cut my hair.  She was so good that I'm actually writing a review for a salon!!!  She was so detailed.  I haven't seen that kind of care with cutting hair since I was in Japan!  For a "jagged" look, she cut little snippets of hair while just slightly moving the blade ahead half way through each cut.  This kept the line but gave a hint of stagger.  She used a soft brush every now and again to keep the hair off my face.  There was an assistant as well who brought me some green tea... not that poopy pouch crap, this was actually good tea!

The shampoo came AFTER I had most of my hair cut off... which was great.  Usually you go home and hair is ready to jump off all over the place... not with Zippy!  There were still some fine tuning cuts after the shampoo, but minor, and I even had a new bib on at this point!  Back up... the shampoo was awesome.  The bright sunny room, good music and THE WHOLE CHAIR FOLDS OUT!  Yeah, it's like lying in bed only you are getting your hair washed... like 3 times.  I don't know what was going on up there but it was relaxing.  Before the 3rd (whatever was being put on my head), a warm towel was placed under my neck... nice.  As you would expect, head massage, but a really good one.  Now, some places go for the neck massage at this point, which is cool, but Zippy does one better.  I got the massage when I got back to the chair.  And, it wasn't just a neck massage, it went all the way down to the middle of my back.  AND, it started with the thumb press style.  Then the fisty like drumming style.  Done?  NO!  Then, the snappy finger style.  It was ridiculous.  THEN the fine-tuning of the hair cut / the neck fix up.

I hope Chizuru stays here for a long time.  I don't need to go anywhere else.

Yeah, the hair cut looks good.  That, and the experience was top notch.  I don't know how this could be beat.

i got my first japanese straight perm here many many years ago. and it was the one best ever. naomi is freakin *serious* about hair! you hear of all these girls bitchin about their hair falling out and breaking after a straight perm??? well not here! b/c naomi always checks ur hair first to make sure it can take the process. i spent 5 hours in there, but they washed and massaged my head, gave me tea, massaged my shoulders. i even had 2 of her assistants working on me at once with the flat iron (i have a *lot* of hair). all that and it was under 200 at the time...it has probably gone up since then. but i remember i loved loved loved how sleek and shiny it was. i've never had it as good since then :(
