Review from Dilys S.
I come here twice every week to get designer inspirations for home decor, projects, design trends, and often walk away with a piece or two. Here's a small boutique shop with a great selections of designer kitchen ware, chairs, sofas, desks and lights. I love the local Paoblo lights on long lasting LED bulbs that last forever, and smartly fits in one of the three seatings: clamps, desk lamp stand, and a floor lamp stand. Neat, local and personal. I always get Cassey's help. The other folks are great two. Friendly, intimate, and chic!

Fantastic little design store on Fillmore. Very European and unique. I always use it for a special occasion gifts e.g. a wedding gift, since yes you can find a more affordable item, majority would be on the pricier side just because of the origin and great design, well worth it.

My review for Zinc is long overdue.
They have tons of neat, fun & cool little things that you can use around your home.
I went in the other day to get one of their gorgeous table runners but it turned out that they had just ran out of it. The staff immediately offered to order it and let me know when it arrives. I paid for my runner there, and several days later, I got a voice message that it is available for pick up. I haven't had the chance to go back there to pick up my order yet as I've been running around and now I am out of town as I type this, but I find their unique collection of products and staff's professionalism and friendliness highly attractive: )
The only negative is, as a few have mentioned, the products carried here are a bit pricey. You can potentially find the same product at a slightly lesser price point online... but then again, sometimes, the pleasure of shopping at a nice store like this one makes the extra few dollars worth it. -

Softsoap dispenser with panda hanging inside.
While you certainly didn't get me laid, it was great having you around. When I think of antibacterial soap, I will forever think of pandas.
I love Zinc, and I love my new soap-lotion dispenser. It's just one of the many hip things they sell here. I also love the woman that works the floor. She has the best vibe. I'm not saying I like her like THAT. Seriously... who goes to a store and gets smitten by one of the staff? *cough* Hm?
Panda dispenser. Strong. Loyal. Missed. -

Came by to kill some time before having dinner at La Mediterranee several blocks away and ended up losing our spot in line! Spent too much time in Zinc Details and had to put our name on the bottom of the list at La Med - BOO!
It seems that they have longer hours during the holidays. When we peeked in the other evening, it was already 7:15. The closing time listed on the door is 7, but they were open until 8 that night.
Cool, funky, and artsy. They have things you don't need, as well as things that you probably need, but already own. But HEY! Some unique function/ trait of the items here would totally rock and would make a fine replacement of what you or your friends already own. Zinc Details seems to be a place I would browse for gift ideas [for friends and for oneself!], online and off. Lots of fun things to look at and imagine how they would fit in somewhere else - your house, a friend's house, in the bathroom, on a shelf...
It's a fun store to check out if you're in the area and don't feel like making a trip to Scandinavia for your wares. -
Review from Eric B.
Zinc Details is a neat little store chock full of modern design home accessories and various tschotchkes in an arguably interesting, yet cluttered fashion. They used to have a store on 4th Street in Berkeley and now have an additional Furniture store nearby on California Street.
The stuff here is a bit pricey, but when you're on Fillmore Street, what else do you expect? However, it's worth a stop and at least a browse. There are many excellent gift giving opportunities here.
I also had a nice chat with the owner and the espresso machine is a nice touch. -

I came prepared with Tylenol.
In the car I did not wait for my sister to fill the tank at the Chevron before I hollered to her, "hurry up." I thought it should have been a luxury for her to drive me around. I happen to think it was what she wanted to do. I turned on the car radio and listened to the news from the scare about tigers, to rain and bad weather elsewhere. It made me think of deer for some reason, and I could feel the evening breeze move against me.
In any case my childhood street was flushed by a sunset, swirling, deepening rises of purple. Seeing the familiar pastel colored horizon was comforting.
But I did not, as I waited, want to think about only myself. So I tried to think instead about the place I was in, being in my sister's car.
I admired its newish interior. Then by impulse I started to say how proud I was of the car and her job. But I was unaccustomed to the idea of my younger sister's success, and I seeming to move behind--her gray hybrid car, designer purse. Chill was beginning to mist in the air.
"We should get dinner after the holidays are through," I said.
And agreed to Indian food.
In less detail: For Christmas. I afforded the shower curtain that I gave her, that she needed. I chose from the shop, Zinc Details. -

Say lady, how much is that plastic dog leaning against the door?
$450... it's a purebred. -
Review from Liz S.
I have probably spent more money at Zinc Details than at any other store in San Francisco. I know this because of all of the empty shopping bags in my closet, a large portion of them are from Zinc. And the fact that they know me and say "Hi! Nice to see you! How are you?" when I walk in. Yes, Zinc Details is my "Cheers" of retail.
I have met 2 of my favorite designers in person at this store, and that means a lot to me. One magical evening was spent with Angela Adams, who showed a wonderful slide show describing her home and design process, and I went home with a cool rug from her studio line. Another night the guest designer was Jonathan Adler who graciously signed two of my favorite pieces which sit proudly on my mantle and make me smile every day.
But the first thing that made me realize that Zinc was a store after my own heart was the fact that they carry ceramic pieces by Arabia Finland with the Moomin animated characters printed on them. I was so enamored with these characters as a child (introduced to me by a Danish family member), and hadn't seen them in an American store until I saw them at Zinc. They are so cute and weird - how can you not love something in which one of the characters names is the Snork Maiden?? - and make me very, very happy.
I can't begin to name the gifts and objects de desir that have come home with me over the years. Just go in and take the time to check out their selection and you are bound to find something that speaks to you, whether it's jewelry, a new bag, a delicate vase, a painting, or a kitchen item. The common denominator is modern design with a touch of whimsy. Zinc products are cool and fun, and shopping there is always a pleasure.
Be sure to check out their annual sidewalk sale - I have scored some real gems there at rediculously low prices.
Some take Prozac or St. John's Wort to balance their moods - me, I do just fine with a regular and healthy dose of Zinc.Listed in: My Secret Registry

My fiance and I are registered with Zinc Details because we have always like the cool home products and thought it would be fun for our friends to shop there for us, mainly because we like everything in the store. They were very helpful with customer service and spend alot of time with us putting together and online list and making sure that we would get what we wanted without duplicates. It was really really fun!!! I love this store and can't wait to see what comes from our friends, who, by the way, will not go broke because the price range is very recession friendly. Thank s Zinc!

Cool place for the new homeowner or gift shopper. There are a lot of quirky home accessories to be found. I think they host different kinds of "exhibitions" each month because they were focusing on local designers and also had a joint partnership with Chronicle Books.
The first section of the store is all the useless/cool knick-knacks, designer books, and home accessories. The second section of the store is an adjoining room to the left that hosts home decor and furniture. Some stuff is cheaper than I expected and most stuff is as expensive as I expected. For the variety of stuff you find it's worth the look. -

While getting rung up, I told the cashier that I really like pretty much everything in their store. She smiled and said, "Yeah, so do we."
They carry a revamped version of Erik Magnussen's thermos mug, in several beautiful colors. I couldn't believe my eyes. I walked throughout the entire store several times, trying to convince myself not to buy everything I saw. The items they sell are very hip, very modern, and very colorful. Some of the more famous designs are a bit pricey, but that's to be expected. -

Spread between two smallish buildings on Fillmore you will find Zinc Details. In the past I have enjoyed browsing around the store and marveling at the odds and ends. On my last visit I was on a mission. Armed with a gift card that i felt compelled to blow in one quick trip.
While looking for things that I actually want and will use in my apartment the merchandise lost its shine. My fascination with the items dissipated as I searched in vain for things to blow my gc on. As amazing and cool as the light bulb lamp in ice is, do i really want that in my apartment? Apparently not. How about a strainer that can be flattened? Cool! BUT what a pain in the ass to clean. So I went through most of the items in the store with these thoughts in my mind and what I came out with was a set of Alessi salt and pepper shakers that look like two white rocks (cute!), a pair of iitali wine glasses (a win-er can never have too many wine glasses, especially one who breaks glasses weekly), and a house of cards photo deck (too nerdy vintage cool to pass up). So as happy as I am with all the items I purchased, I had to do a lot of searching to find these little gems. -

I love this store! It's perfect for a housewarming gift or maybe just a little something because you deserve it. They have a great selection of less expensive items but it's true, most of the merch is higher end. Recent purchases have included an oinking pig key ring, pink & red Marimekko socks, time zone clock, an ipod case, etc etc - all stuff I don't need and totally love!
Also great for kids items, vases and unusual kitchen gadets - more exciting than I make it sound.Listed in: Born to Shop

I stumbled across Zinc with some friends last weekend when we decided to take a walk down Fillmore street. It's a pretty fun store with a lot of interesting things to look at, and as one friend put it aptly: "it's a good place to buy gifts."
They carry things from kitchy kitchenware, funky furniture to wacky wall hangings (pardon the alliteration, it's a habit). My favorite thing was the magnetic jewelry which has the potential for endless hours of entertainment and distraction. They also have decorations, chairs, potted plants, lamps, rugs - you name it.
Other than the fun eye candy and interesting designs, the only complaint I have is the borderline absurd prices of certain items. If you're looking to splurge on something fun for a special someone, give this place a look around.
Or, if you have nothing to do on a saturday and would like to window shop, I highly suggest crusing to this store - you won't be bored! -

Please dear god help me, I DO NOT MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO SHOP HERE!!
But I love it. I love it so much that when I was unemployed, I purchased a $40 stuffed elephant from this place. Down the street from Design Within Reach, Zinc Details is the accessory and lifestyle shop that goes with the $2000 Knoll chair you just purchased.
Everything from cute q-tip holdes to marimekko sheets to $40 stuffed animals made in Isreal, this store is da bomb.
Please have money when you go here or you will be sad. -
Review from Helene K.
This place is pretty quirky. A lot of artsy and useful (some useless?) things for sale. For example, there was a lot of stuff for the kitchen--their mugs were enormous but nice to look at. There were some desktop decorations there, too--there was one pen/pencil holder there that looked like a tangled mess. I kind of liked the work, but I wasn't sure if anybody else would like it in my circle of friends.
A little pricey, but it was fun to peruse around in nonetheless. I was able to complete some holiday shopping here. -

One of my favorite shops. I love to shop at Zinc whenever I am in San Francisco. I still treasure a ceramic piece I bought from the Fillmore St store over 12 years ago.
It is a great place to look for accessories to make your home unique and show you style saavy. -

Zinc Details has cute, and definitely weirdest, innovative gadgets for your house or just pure entertainment!
From cutting boards that transform into scoopers to balled up speakers, this place will have you lingering for hours!
If I had my own house, I will fill it up with odd merchandise from Zinc Details! -

Picture a mini IKEA but more expensive.
Be careful if you're carrying a handbag or wearing a backpack cuz you might knock something over, maneuvering around the other shoppers here.

Check the date of this review. I finished Christmas shopping last night, and Zinc details was where I got it done.
If you're like me, you have Browse places (on your way to somewhere you really want to go, you'll stop in if there's something good in the window), Courtesy places (you have to go because someone requested an item from there), and Go-To places. Zinc is a Go-To place: alone, this year, among online retailers and a single local bookstore.
Zinc Details is for me what the MOMA Museum Store used to be: the place where I plan to fill the basket, and am never disappointed. Last night was no different. I found gifts and stocking stuffers for my husband, both kids, and mother-in-law -- and saw tons of things I want to return for, myself.
As for price points: um, what? I dropped about $180 last night on a full bag of stuff. I think this is a reasonable amount to pay for lovingly-made items that also work beautifully. Considering that I could have spent twice that on a single thing, pretty much anywhere else on Fillmore, I think I got away with holiday murder.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to Vas and the rest of the staff at Zinc Details. May your success continue for many years to come!Listed in: Give a Gift, Get a Gift

Brilliant store. It's better for cute, modernist accents for the home than for the bigger furniture in the second room to the left.
The only drawback for outfitting your home with too much of this stuff is you leave yourself open to claims that you're becoming Tyler Durden in Fight Club before he went nuts and spawned his Brad Pitt alter-ego.
(Yes, that's a little bit of a spoiler if you haven't seen the movie, but when a high school friend saw my place he said "you're becoming that guy in Fight Club" "Which one? Brad Pitt or Edward Norton?" "Both of them.") -

I stumbled in to this store on Sunday to merely waste some time- I've been in the store before but found it to be too expensive...
Just a tip for you- awesome stocking stuffers! Yes, I realize it is April but that is truly what i thought when I walked out of there with my kaleidoscope blackberry camera add-on...
The folks working on Sunday were very kind and encouraged me to continue chatting them up. What a change from the usual stuffy Sunday on Fillmore St. -

Everyone there is really nice and they know a lot about the products that they carry. Friendly people, good service. A great combo.
Also, I don't think their prices are too expensive for what they carry. I could make a living scrolling through catalogs and their prices are actually reasonable for the quality of goods. If you buy something from their, you could be sure it won't fall apart. It's an investment. -

If you go into Ethan Allen just for amusement at cookie cutter yuppies and their lesser kinda (wannabeyuppiescum) then this is the place for you. Well designed products (many mentioned in ID Magazine).
I buy gifts here for people that have good taste. Everyone else gets regifts because they will not know better. -

They sell the coolest bags but once you find out how much each bag costs, it's not so cool anymore...
But I ended up buying a bag because I had to. I couldn't decide between a Jack Spade messenger or a Hideo Wakamatsu. I ended up buying the latter because it was far more sophisticated (it was for "work") and it was definitely about a hundred bucks more. Sigh. I love the bag, but I would've loved a Jack better.
By the way, this place doesn't give you refunds, they only do store credits. Boo. Four stars for them. -

Hmm, is that fabulous or what? Zinc Details, that is. I find that the Modern decor here hits that spot in aesthetics between minimal and purpose-driven design that makes for fantastic pieces for a great space.
Ostensibly modern with a hint of kitsch, some of the items will migrate down to earth but others are astronomically expensive. Be choosy with your selection & take your time, you will find the piece de resistance for the abode of your daydreams. -
Review from Jean K.
A good selection of Scandinavian modern such as Marimekko as well as other staples like Italia. Many items similar to knick knacks you would find at the SFMoMA store.
Prices range from small $10 to high so you can generally find something within your budget. -
Review from Amy N.
Cool design store! One of the better ones I've been to in San Francisco, with lots of stuff for your home. They're the first store I've seen that carry droog straps (basically long rubber straps you stretch on the wall to hold your shoes, stuffed animals, what-not). Lots of interesting and functional items to browse and, if you can spend money on a gift, buy.
The girl who helped me was really friendly and answered all my questions about the lifespan and usefulness of the Japanese wallet I bought. If the person at a design store can't help you figure out if the pricey thing you're about to buy is really what you're looking, that's not a design store you want to shop at.
If you're in the area and have a some time to kill, you should take a look. -

its all in the details.
It makes sense that Zinc Details is located a couple of doors down from the DWR on Fillmore, because they complement each other so well.
Although I wish that there were more hard to find accessories and knick knacks, I still stop by in hopes to see the next Louis Ghost chair (and I don't mean the stool!) or something else creative and aspiring. -

Zinc Details is a fun and funky slice of tchotchke heaven on Fillmore Street. Their home decor accessories and trinkets are displayed in all their technicolor glory, and it's a feast for the eyes! The items sold here are really interesting yet functional. I went in yetserday and bought an adorable Joseph nesting food prep set, complete with a mixing bowl, strainer, colander, measuring cups...it has so much of what I need to complete my collection of kitchen wares, and it saves space because they all nest inside the mixing bowl.
If I had a small fortune, I'd probably blow it all at Zinc Details. It's such a pleasant shopping experience, and the gal working here yesterday was adorable, friendly, and very knowledgable about the goods. I love it here! -

Zinc carries functional, unique, quality, intelligently designed household items. I am both a professional designer and a design student. When I need break from work, a little inspiration, or a motivating gift I visit Zinc. It is my big-kid equivalent of a toys-r-us; a love of legos and action figures turned into a love of beautiful functioning house hold items.
Def a store more appreciated by design educated people; I often hear customers commenting that items are overpriced, that they could get the same thing at target, etc. I understand the argument and I do believe in affordable beautiful design. But if you take the time to research the products and their makers you will understand the difference.
This is a also a great place to buy fun gifts for housewarming parties, weddings, birthdays, etc. as long as the recipient appreciates good design.
Creative + function + beauty + quality always equals happiness in my book... -

Fun store to browse through but that's about it. Many of the items are over priced.
The "look" of many items in the store begin to look typical. Maybe it's just me but I prefer items to be a little more unique. -

This is such a great store with lots of modern items for the home. I can never go wrong when I buy gifts here! If my apartment were bigger, I'd buy much more! Everyone who works at the store is very nice and non-pretentious, so it makes the experience all the more enjoyable.
I also love the fact that they sell art by local artists. Just last night they had a reception for Rex Ray at their California St. store, which was very exciting! -

One of the first Bay Area shops to focus on modernism, it combines the best of Scandinavian and Japanese design together with local designers and notable international stylists. A full range of items for the home include housewares by Alessi and Iittala, Japanese lacquerware from the 1960s, and an entire shop within a shop of Jonathan Adler's pottery vases. High-end items include a Danish modern desk from the 1960s and tansu - traditional Japanese furinture - dating from the 1920s and '30s. That it is neither Crate & Barrel nor Pottery Barn is reflected in its prices.
