The 3 stars are just for the fact that they have been open late on a Saturday night.
After a night of shuffling in between the other sweaty boys on the dancefloor at sadlands around the corner, we cam e here hungry and glad we didnt have to eat fatty, tasteless pizza nearby.
The staff was very chatty given they hadn't had anyone in there in about 4 hours. The place has NO ambience anymore and the staff said the late hours were an experiment.
Given that we were there at 1 am on a Saturday night, things do not bode well for the future.
At first, it looked like Zig Zag would have some of the same fantastic desserts as Le Bon Gateau (that's "the good cake" not "the good cat"--it's a false cognate with Spanish gatto. Go figure). The desserts, however, don't look all that interesting.
I had a crepe tonight that was pretty good (and cheap), and previously I've had sandwiches that were pretty good (better than Le Bon Gateau's).
The place is suffering from very little business. That makes me feel sad, but I'm not sure what to say about it other than to express sadness. They intentionally got rid of the plush furniture in order to inspire more turn-over. Now it isn't all that comfortable (though they plan on replacing some of the most unstable-but-cool chairs).
I want this place to succeed, but I haven't seen a lot of creativity from them. I feel a little worried that they are just in a woe-as-me state.
BTW, there are some good places to eat in the Castro. Thai Express is pretty tasty, Zumi is good, Cote Sud is good, Catch is pretty good. We've recently lost some other good ones: Tallulah and Le Moone (though the latter was a little uneven).

We've eaten here 2 times so far. The first time they were packed up and because of a snafu in the kitchen, I was not served my meal until a VERY long time after my husband. I ended up eating half of his crepe so that I would not die of starvation. Luckily his crepe was SO delicious that we gave them another try. It was a chicken, brie and pesto crepe. We also splurged and got a nutella & banana crepe which was sinfully delicious. My husband liked the coffee. I think the place would be really wonderful little creperie if the service was shaped up. I love the food and it is a bargain at a huge crepe and salad for $7.50! Gimme the delicious french food without the scatter brained service please.

Ever since it changed from La Bonne Gateau, it went downhill within the blink of an eye. It was way, way, way better before it changed its name to Zig Zag. A nice little coffee house with amazing pastries. Even the pastries have gone downhill. Service is bland and its just not the same as what it once was. For shame!
