Not quality sushi... but bearable for the price and relaxed atmosphere. If you want some sushi cheap to eat with your friends anytime - this is where my friends and i go.

Try: Spicy Tuna Salad, Spicy Tuna Crunch Roll (see a trend here?), Geisha Roll (lobster baked on top of california roll)

Zencu is not the best place to offer sushi, but it's not the worst (the worst is Ton Ten Ko Japanese Restaurant in San Gabriel). My date and I ordered Tiger Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, and Philly Roll. We were happy with the food. The avocado wasn't fresh, but it was decent. The Philly Roll is my new discovery. It's cream cheese with salmon, and 1 or 2 pieces will excite your taste buds. It's meant to be shared by 3 - 4 people unless you really, really LOVE cream cheese. My most favorite was the Shrimp Tempura Roll. I liked everything in that roll, but I wish the shrimp tempura would have been fried better.

The prices are reasonable. The portions are pretty generous. I was surprised when the bill came because it was under $25. Not too bad.

The waiters and waitresses were quite friendly and attentive. Nothing to complain about, really. They often smile when they're talking to you, making you feel comfortable.

Zencu also offers a variety of alcohol beverages. They even have fruit flavor sake. This is a good place to hang out with your friends, eat sushi, drink Japanese beer or sake, and watch sports.

Nice place inside the Japanese Village. Friendly waitresses, and 1/2 price sushi in select rolls. Went there tonight with my two older brothers, shared an entree (had chicken & steak terriyaki, salad, mixed tempura, rice and miso soup) and ordered several rolls. I am a huge fan of Dragon Rolls.

I might become a regular here :) Especially for the cuties working the evening.

all these low ratings is kind of sad.

But this place is ok. I enjoyed the dinner combination I got containing: BBQ short ribs, vegetable tempura with shrimp. It's not bad and they give you a lot!!

I enjoyed their spicy tuna roll. I got chunks of tuna in their instead of a really blended paste like you would get somewhere else so it tasted a lot better. The waiter was really nice. Mints were yummy on the way out. yeah I'm a sucker for mints.

their nigiris are pretty big for my opinion. but thats a good thing! hahah

anyways, I would go to this place again. And would recommend it.

The only thing that sucked was our car got towed...
Don't park your car at office depot. I used to do it a lot. But that guy was a little racist towards us when we went up to him.

The whole parking lot was full and he towed away our car.. whatever revenge is bliss! jk.

but anyways, pink berry is just down the street so skip dessert at zencu and go to PB!!

Don't come here if you want good food. Come here if you want cheap beer. $1.50 Kirins all day everyday. Plus, there are an infinite number of booths so that everyone gets their own private space. No more worrying about people listening in on your conversations. Feel free to play drinking games without being bothered/bothering others. Go ahead, unbuckle those jeans after a couple beers.

I'm considering a move to this area and while checking out my potential new living arrangement, we decided to roam little tokyo for dinner.

Undecided, we found our way to Zencu.

Decent fish (especially for being "half priced").

Yellow tail was good.  Salmon was good.  I enjoyed my Uni.  And the Unagi was good.

Everything was decent.  Nothing nasty.  Nothing really wow'd me.

I give it 3 stars.

Pretty safe place for alright sushi.  Have been here when Shabu Shabu House is closed or schedule doesn't permit the long wait.  The 50% off always cracks me up.  I don't know if Kabuki still does this too, where they'll list some outrageous price for a pair of nigiri, then cut the price in half making it sound more reasonable.  The price is merely OK, I think most of the basic rolls are around $4-5 now, and I don't believe in ever paying more than that for a California roll.  California roll *shakes head*.  I wasn't feelin' the discount nigiri nor rolls last night so I ordered a combo meal and Q shooter.

Q shooter ($1.25) was the same as Kabuki's.  I always get one whenever I go.  A raw quail egg, bonito flakes, smelt egg, and a little spice in ponzu sauce.  People get freaked out by the raw egg thing but it is yummm.

Downtown deluxe combo ($11.95) comes with miso soup, salad, teriyaki chicken, tempura shrimp and veggies, 3 pieces of either Cali or spicy tuna rolls, and rice.  Hmm.  I mean, the meal is very generous for the price.  The miso was standard.  The spicy tuna rolls were OK, not very spicy, not that memorable, but good, meaty sized.  The tempura was pretty freakin' good and bad for you.  Light, crispy batter covered huge butterflied shrimp.  A couple of the starchier veggies underneath got a little soggy though, still not bad.  There was a lot of chicken, probably 7-8 oz worth.  It was sliced and didn't have much flavor except for the sauce that was drizzled over it.  Opted out of the rice for more salad.  Salad was basic Iceberg with a gingery-soy vinaigrette.

Service was attentive enough, but then, not a lot of people were dining in.  Other dishes waitresses brought out for the other guests looked appetizing...

Went here for dinner after a visit to the MOCA Geffen.  We were wandering around Little Tokyo plaza and were trying to figure out dinner while getting distracted by the knicknack store and ice cream parlors.  We were attracted by the half-off signs and range of food on the menu - sushi and udon and rice options.

The decor is nice and the waitstaff speaks English.  Always a plus!  They bring out an edamame appetizer for free.  Er, at least, we didn't pay for it.  The presentation was very nice and the food was good.  My sushi combo plate was very good and my friends got the ribs and sushi.  Nothing really stood out , except that the waitress messed up and never brought us the oyster appetizer we ordered.

I'd like to call this place a hidden gem.  Not only for the cheap sushi prices, but because it was really really hard to find.  Look it up on mapquest or something before you go, because it's up on the 2nd floor of a mall, kind of tucked away between some other buildings.

I'm definitely not a sushi connoisseur, but I do love me some sushi!  So looking at all the other reviews and seeing that people were saying it was ok, but nott amazing... either times have changed and their sushi has improved, or I'm just not picky.

Basically, I enjoyed every single roll I got.  They were all very tasty.  The biggest draw by far is the "always half price."  Granted, it's only on the basic rolls, not the fancier stuff, but you can make a cheap meal out of it by only ordering that stuff, or by ordering a mix and then it's still a really reasonably priced meal, especially for sushi.

I didn't have an $1.50 draft Kirin, but next time I go back (see, I want to go back- must be good!) I'll definitely grab me some.

We had absolutely no wait time to get a table even though the place was fairly full, and our waiter was extremely friendly and attentive.

Fantastic preparation/display of food, good sushi, decent cooked food. The prices are middle of the road (although a sign, quoting from some magazine, states " best cheap sushi in LA). I'll give them the good sushi, and maybe because it's down the street from Hama that they call it cheap, but, for instance, a couple pieces of Yellowtail sushi is about $5. If you had nothing but Sushi for lunch it would set you back like $25-30. There are lunch specials of cooked food for $8ish, but the spicy pork that I had was a little greasy and not that flavorful.  However, at these middle of the road prices, everything comes out like it was a much more expensive restaurant, which is a nice little slice of luxury when you're on jury duty down the street (like I was)....

SO my sister ambushed me and kidnapped me today (sunday) because we had ment to go to lil tokyo for a while now.  Walked around, took menus and looked for a place to eat.  THEN, we come across this place's menu.

It had what i would i would consider a traditional menu.  Not the food, the menu it's self.  Half off, etc etc, what people said.  Cheap beer, but a very nice looking place. So, this being lunch, we order three sushi and two rolls.  Squid (which i always order), Halibut and Octopus. the Rolls, spicy tuna, and i forget what i ordered. The Squid was exceptionally good and the rest was good.  My sister liked the spicy tuna, i didn't, it wasn't spicy enough to me.  I liked the thing i got.

On the complaint that others had, i have no idea what time frames they went, there was hardly anyone there.  Our waiter was attentive and useful.  Though, he had never had a drink so he couldn't tell us about the sake.

All in all it was the kick back sushi place that i've been looking for.  Cheap, good/tasty, relaxing.  The only problem i had is that lil Tokyo doesn't really have what i was looking for.  I'd go back if anyone invited me, but the lack of anime/manga at the manga store kinda sucked.

There are prolly better sushi places then Zencu. But if you have a craving and are not looking to empty your pockets to satisfy your hunger, than this is a good reasonable place to go especially for lunchtime if you work nearby.

Safe bets are the spicy tuna crunch roll, baked scallop roll, and the tempura cali roll. If you got room, finish up with the tempura ice cream. Need to cool down from the walk over at high noon? Throw back some Kirin for $1.50.

One thing that they gotta work on tho is the service, which can be a bit slow sometimes. I find that frustrating cuz I usually only get an hour for lunch, and these guys tend to run me over that mark sometimes... so just beware.

I'd give them 3.5 stars if possible... But I don't believe in rounding up. Better service mite earn them that extra half to get to 4.

After spending a couple of hours at the LA MOCA, we were hungry. Thought we'd try Little Tokyo, very reminiscent of SF "J-town". Anyhow, what I can really appreciate about LA, is that all eating establishments are given a rating by the LA County Dept. of Health. Which of course, can work like "The Scarlet Letter" or not.  We were really surprised as we walked through the Little Tokyo shopping center to see quite a few restaurants rated "B". So we continued on until we came across Zencu which was rated "A".

Well, just because it's rated "A" doesn't mean the food is of that caliber. Just means that during an inspection, they received a "clean bill of health" for an eating establishiment. The sushi wasn't that good. The tonkatsu and tempura were on the greasy side. Service was actually good, though, so for that, I applaud them.

I doubt I'd go here again, even though they are an A-rated place. Ha!

I feel lazy and dont feel like elaborating on this sushi rest. which failed to impress me.

Cuisine: 78% (C+). good variety of sushi, but not the best it could be.
Service: 70% (C-). They messed up my order, the waitress blamed it on me with a bitchy attitude, saying i didn't say it right and refused to change it. I asked for water twice and it never came... came after i asked another waiter. Granted the place was about to close, i didn't expect them to provide the best service, but consistency i think is important. another waitress actually came to our table and apologized that they had to rush our dinner, because they close at 10PM. so yeah.
Interior Decor: 79% (C+). So it was alright... nothing really impressive other than the lights from the ceiling.
Exterior Design: 72% (C)
Location: 90% (A-)
Price: 94% (A). Cheap with decent food.

Come with friends who are on a budget.

Almost everything on the menu is already half off when you walk in. That, my friend, is a recipe for success.

The sushi is good here... not good in a Sushi Roku-spend-30-bucks-on-a-roll-so-it-better-be-good way, but good in a quality ingredients, well put together, tastes-good-so-why-complain way.

Maybe the service lacks a little bit, but whatever.  You get what you pay for, I think, and if you want to pay a little to have the same quality sushi you're going to get at just about any of the sushi restaurants in the area, then it's going to be lacking something. In my opinion? Not a big deal.

Although I haven't been here for it, this seems to be a great place for happy hour. I mean, it has specials, a bar, neon signs, everything that one needs for a successful happy hour... and it has the look of a college bar. That said, I guess if you're into fine dining you want to steer clear of this place. It might make you feel like you're on the way to a frat party.

Everything was in 10 minute intervals

10min to be seated
10min to have our drink orders taken
10min to have our orders taken & drink orders REtaken
10min until we recieved our hot tea
10min for miso & edemame
1 second after that when we recieved our

LA deluxe = chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, shrimp/veggie tempura, & salad
-chicken teriyaki:  medium to dry.  doesn't shock the senses
-beef teriyaki: like a good steak but VERY chewy
-shrimp was decent as where the green beans but the carrots were undercooked and the cucumber overcooked

dynomite roll
-sauteed veggies and crabmeet:  shxtttttt
-smallest roll i've seen in my life

b.s.c.r.
-which they messed up and gave us a philly instead
-baked scallops, on a california roll
-missing the eel sauce
-kind of gross
-also quite small

accidental philly roll
-not enough cream cheese
-and yes this roll was tiny too

calamari salad with mixed greens served with sesame oil
-calamari was chewy and not even fried
-doesn't one think "fried" when they hear calamari?

THE HOT TEA
was nothing but green scalding hot water.  tempting?  not really.

SERVICE
For some reason we had one waiter, then another, then our food served by yet another, and then another, AND THEN another brought us our check.  strange...  we didn't know who to tip BUT since there was a huge lack of service we didn't tip much at all.

no one offered to refill our teas.  our empty plates REMAINED ON THE TABLE FOR 15 minutes at least.

There's a sign at the front of the "restaurant" boasting Zencu as downtown LA's cheapest sushi around.  It failed to mention that Zencu is also the crappiest sushi in downtown.

Kirin for only $1.50? In LA? Yes. This was my first visit to Japantown and the price range was my decision for stopping in to give it a try. They have everything permanantly marked down on their menu (i.e. the original prices next to their 50% prices) begging the question, "why bother?" The menu that's been reduced excludes their specialty rolls.

Since I didn't go crazy with my ordering, I can attest to their good quality halibut and yellowtail. The complimentary edamame appetizer is a nice touch as well. I will definitely be checking out the other restaurants around the area before I go back to Zencu, but overall I thought it was pretty good.

Not bad and not great.  1/2 price off sushi, but i think they just got some cheap sushi, as it isn't a temporary price difference or for any set hours.  It is written in the menu that it's half off some arbitrary doubled price.  Beer is 1.50, so that's nice.
Of course the sushi I like isn't half off.  Just the simple things like salmon, cucumber rolls, etc.  Your basic shrimp tempura roll is still 8 bucks.
Service was slow, and hardly anyone was in the restaurant.  It's ok, but I'd rather try somewhere new than go back.  Unless I'm wanting a beer when I'm in Lil Tokyo.

See, we approached this place with a "I' m-angry-at-the-LA-inflated-sushi-price s-let' s-find-something-reasonable-and-authen tic" mentality. And by "authentic" I mean "not interior designed by Philipe Starck."

And you know what? Zencu fit the bill. Tucked up on the shady second floor of a mall, I didn't go in expecting much. But the big "50% off!!" and "$1.50 Kirin drafs" sings lured me in.

The sushi was actually pretty damn good. The cuts were large, some of the rolls were creative, the fish seemed to be fresh as anywhere else, and the beers were, uh, plentiful.

It should be noted that only the sashimi, sushi, and regular rolls are 50% off. All special rolls are around $10-$15 a piece, if I recall correctly. But you'll still eat your face off at this place and get out paying a fraction of what you'd pay at Wabi Sabi or Katsuya.

If you want inexpensive sushi that's not going to knock your socks off, this is the place. Like many of the other reviewers, my party and I stumbled upon here because the sushi place we wanted to eat at was too crowded. So, we reluctantly walked in and seeing that it had all these open tables, we decided to give it a try. By that point, we were all starving!

The waiter was friendly and courteous but the food was pretty average. I can't say that it was awful but then it didn't really do anything for me either. It did, however, stop my hungry stomach from growling. And I was content with that at the time. It's like when you're so damn hungry that you almost don't mind eating those leftovers from a few days ago-- not really what you wanted but it'll do for now.

It's the weekend of the Cherry Blossom festival in Little Tokyo so the shops and restaurants are gonna staff accordingly, right?

Guess not.  I ducked in here for lunch to escape the sweltering March summer that had engulfed the city.  We hadn't had a chance to look at the menu so we ordered our drinks and some Gyoza to start.  The waitress delivered said items then took our order returned with that order and we never saw her again.  EVER!

I watched two other tables get up and leave without even placing an order,  I watched a few groups of people stand at the door and wait to be seated but to no avail and they left.  I had to walk around the place just to find someone to get me my check.

The food was mediocre at best and it was oppressively hot inside.  I honestly can't even find one reason to give this place a second chance.

Nothing special + bad service = no return.

This is a good place to start your evening if you are gonna be hanging out in or around downtown for the night. 1st they have 99 cent beers, 2nd the sushi is cheap and usually good. I've noticed there is about a 50/50 chance your sushi will be soggy. Then eating a spicy tuna roll and downing a 99 cent kirin is not present :)  Another good thing is that even though the sushi is cheap the quantities are pretty a good size. Not a great place but very far from bad.

PS: If you like ultimate fighting there is always some form of it on their TVs

Hidden in the Little Tokyo Mall is this almost hip sushi place.
Dark painted booths with red pleather seats and a long sushi bar, I've never seen more than 10 people here at lunch.
Its claim to fame is "Half Priced Sushi".
Its cheap but decent. Its not going to knock your socks off, but it'll cure your itch for sushi.
be prepared to listen to 80's pop at a fairly noisy level... Makes for interesting conversation.

Everytime my friends and I are in Little Tokyo, we always get sushi from Zencu.  It's cheap and good!! Service can be a little slow sometimes which is frustrating.  After we're done eating, we head over to the mochi store to buy some mochi ice cream.  Yummy!  I love the vanilla and green tea flavors.

The regular rolls are nasty, california rolls taste too much like mayo spicy tuna least favorite I've had but the sushi a la carte is worth it. The mackerel, octopus, salmon, yellow tail, tuna is fresh and little cheaper than other joints. The beer is only $1.75!

50% off scam.

The wait at the sushi restaurant we wanted to go to in Little Tokyo was more than 1 hour long, so we walked around and stumbled on this place. The signs outside the restaurant advertised 50% off sushi and $1.50 Kirin drafts. I figured for 50% off, it can't be that bad.

The sushi was bad. The tuna and salmon were not fresh. The salmon came with slices of lemon on it. I've never seen sushi served with lemon. Also, the portions were smaller than usual. The yellow tail and spicy tuna was okay.

When the bill came, I was surprised at how much it cost. Then I realized that their "regular" prices are heavily inflated. The regular price for tuna was $8; thus, the 50% off price was $4 which is not that cheap considering the bad quality and the small portions.

The one good thing about this place was that the $1.50 Kirin draft beers were good.

In summary, don't go here for fresh sushi. Go here if you want cheap beers. The sushi rolls that do not depend on fresh fish might also be okay.

On the menu in big, bold, letters is printed "50%off sushi. No limit." A great deal but it makes me wonder how a sushi becomes half price.  The only time I ever see food on sale is when it's been in the butcher section too long and is about to come back to life.  Or if it's in the baked good case and can only be used to break windows in case of emergency.  Maybe raw fish goes on sale for different reasons. Somehow Korean owned sushi restaurants are always cheaper than Japanese owned sushi restaurants.  Go figure
.
As for Zencu- not all the rolls and sushi are 50% off.  Just the ones that are usually less expensive in all sushi restaurants (spicy tuna, salmon skin, etc).  With most rolls under 3 bucks a pop, I'm not complaining. They also have premium sushi (uni) and rolls (spider roll) at full price of around $9 and full entrees of various teriyaki meats.  The alcohol list includes a range of sakes and mixed cocktails made with Shoju. The peach pit is tasty.  And don't forget the tempura ice cream. A conundrum of design, I order it at whatever "Japanese" restaurant I go to.

Happy Hour is M-F 4:30-6:30 with 50% off beer and hot sake.  Don't get lost trying to find this place.  Park at The Little Tokyo Village parking structure (they give an hours validation) and take the elevator to the second floor.

walter likes their BSCR dish here, it's some sort of a baked scallop roll. he swears it's tasty. i'm not into the whole mayo thing on rice with fish bits. that's not for me. now, whether he likes the dish or not i do not know if we will be returning.

after having attended the "heart and music" performance at the JACCC Aratani Theater, walter had to use the restroom. he explained to the host there that it was a slight emergency. he had to go pretty badly. he had waited for a while at the theater but the line was just too long. so, he tried to find a restroom at the village plaza, a public bathroom. with no luck, he went upstairs to zen cu. we'd been there before and they were always real nice. he didn't think that there would be a problem in just using their restroom. he was wrong.

one of the hosts and waiters picked a fight with him. they told him that they would not let him use the restroom and that there was one downstaris in the corridor. he told them that he'd been down there but there was not one that he could find and he wasn't going to take a piss just out there in front of a store or on the side of a building. he explained it was a dire emergency and that he really had to go. they still refused.

the host and server made a huge scene in front of all the customers. they were swearing up and down. they told one of the ot her workers to call the cops or security. they told him to get the fucc out and what not. they even threatened him and tried to push him out the door. why it was so serious i do not know. customers were scared and that guy made a big mistake in putting his hands on walter. walter has a temper and NOBODY should touch him ever. sometimes, i think twice about giving him a hug even.

anyways, a server told him to just go ahead. he thanked the guy. he snuck into the restroom and didn't say another word. while he was in there, the guy who had picked a fight with him and had put his hand on him...he walked into the restroom and told walter to get the fucc out and that he'd mess him up. that was real MACHO of the guy...considering he was hiding behind the stall that walter was in.

once walter came out, the guy tried to push walter. walter pushed him aside and left. the server ran out cursing and waving his fist in the air. i don't know what was up that other guy's ass but he was lucky it wasn't walter's foot.

as far as food goes, it is just fair. the prices are high and the quality isn't anything special. most items are 50% off, no question why. service sucks and orders often come out wrong and/or very late. they are quick to bring you the bill though. they want their money. when i charged my last meal there on a visa, the guy who brought me the receipts to sign...he stood over me until i filled both of them out and signed one of them. he even asked me about the tip. i told him that i'd leave tip if i felt like it. he tried to tell me that it was required. i laughed and told him i was leaving and that my TIP to him was to not be so rude to his customers, to learn a thing or two about proper etiquitte in serving, hosting and restaurant management. he was upset and told me not to return. after this experience and learning about how they treated walter today, they won't ever get another cent from me.
