This review is for Shannon, an EXCELLENT esthetician at Zena. I went to her for eyebrows and Brazilians the whole time I lived in Baltimore.
Her technique is awesome, though I'm not sure how detailed I should be considering the area she was waxing. However, in the name of a good review I will try to explain. She uses hard wax for your more sensitive areas and soft for the bikini, and applies pressure after removing a strip of wax which really helps with the pain. I have seen other waxer's use the "all-four" position to get those hard to reach areas, but Shannon is able to grab them using a more modest side-lying position...more specifically, I never left feeling violated :o)
She is also super sweet and personable, and made me feel relaxed. The student discount on Tuesday's is also a definite plus.
She would be great for getting your first Brazilian due to her sensitive demeanor (the first time is always the worst!), but is also great for anyone in need. Loved her!!
I give this place one star, if even. They treat there new customer like crap. I went in and made an appointment and they told me they had something open that evening. I went back for my appointment and sat for over 45 min and never once was appoligized to. I then had to stand in front of the receptionist who was on the phone for the hole time and interupt her conversation about how drunk she was last night to ask if I was going to be taken anytime. She gave me a nasty look and I said forget it and walked out.
I went there for a pedicure on a Tuesday evening (yes! student discount!). The decor of the salon was different from most salons such that it's a little smaller and less 'sterile' looking (like a salon made from someone's apt). The receptionist was very nice, and they were very prompt with the appointment time.
My pedicurist was great. She was very professional and did a great job. I went on a rainy evening, and she made sure my nails were dry and put wrap around them. Very attentive.
Definitely will go there for my pedicures from now on!
Excellent service! The décor is a pastiche and cluttery but I really don't mind. Sweet Russian girls & other brilliant folks will tend to you. Shannon does the best Brazilian waxes. Make sure you ask for Iryna for your eyebrows (she's the only one who uses scissors and you'll get beautiful results). I love that men and women and black and white folks frequent this place. It has a happy vibe. Beware the noisy gym next door if you want a serene massage.
I got my first haircut in Baltimore here and I will DEFINITELY be going back. Jenny cut my hair and she was SO helpful in deciding a style. She really listened to what I wanted and let me know exactly what she was doing so that I didn't freak out. She was so sweet and easy to communicate with and I came out with exactly what I wanted. She also seemed up to date with new techniques/styles. ooo yes and she was nice enough to mention the Tuesday 20% student discount.
The salon was bustling with activity and everyone was friendly. Also, it was very easy to get an appointment. everything i wanted in a salon. I was a very happy camper and I can't wait to try some of their other services!
I give Zena's 4stars b/c its a reasonably priced spa/salon. It isn't the least bit pretentious even though they offer a plethora of high end services. Its the best of both worlds... time to give up the crappy little vietnamese nail shop now that you know there's a spa that isn't uppity or totally over priced.
I went to Zena's based on Yelp reviews and because I needed a haircut before going back to a small town where I sure would not entrust anyone with my hair and thus would not get a good haircut again for who knows how long. I went on a Tuesday, for the student discount, and got my hair cut by Jenny. The salon is very nice - high ceilings and great natural light, and I felt quite pampered.
I had had a great cut at VSL in DC, so I told her I wanted to keep the shape, but would like her to lighten up the back and take off the ends.
Jenny also talked to me about my hair routine (I have naturally curly hair, but sometimes blowdry it straight). She offered me tips on blowdrying and flatironing, including serums, brands of flatiron, and brush techniques. She was also nice, chatty and spent at least an hour trimming, blowdrying and ironing my hair. It was so straight and shiny when I was done, which was a huge treat, and with the student discount, the whole thing was $40, which wasn't that bad at all, considering.
Thanks for the recommendation, Yelp!
Edit: after wearing the new cut for a few weeks, I think she made it a little too poofy and layered for curly hair. I think i still like VSL better.
Can't say much more than everyone has already said, but I went there for the first time to get a manipedi, and it was great! Masha (for us Russians, Maria for everyone else) did it. She was very sweet.
While my nails were drying I got a chance to talk with Zena, who gave me her life story and really impressed me with her forthrightness and standard of quality. Her daughter also does Thai massages at her salon three days a week.
I'll definitely be coming back, probably on a Tuesday so I can get my 20% discount!!
I go to Zena's for Brazilian's, and Shannon does a great job! And for $50, you can't complain! She's very personable and sweet, and if you are not used to getting Brazilians, she will make you comfortable and ease you through the process!
Thanks again Yelp! I just moved to Baltimore, and had major new stylist anxiety, but my short messy hair was becoming a little reminicent of David Bowie, and i turned to yelp for help. Thank God i did! Zena's was great! i called, explained what i needed (i've had too many bad haircuts to take any chances) and was scheduled the following week with Jenny. She totally understood what i wanted and even helped tame my quirky hair! Not only that but she gave me ideas on ways i can style it differently, and as it grows out! major plus!
Just moved to Baltimore for school and chanced upon Zena while walking to the grocery store. I have curly hair and am usually pretty picky about my stylists. Decided that a haircut could not possibly be worse than my current look (8 months without even a trim!) and was pleasantly surprised. The salon is a little ragtag and needs a new coat of paint inside, but Kenny was awesome! He gave my hair volume, gave me good food tips while snipping and was very friendly. Gave him a huge tip and definitely going back in 6 weeks!
This salon is beautifully appointed and they do a great job with everything from cut to color to manicures to facials. The stylist I worked with was Liza and she did a great job. My hair was too long and dull. It needed some major work, but Liza did a great job and with some speed as well. She suggested adding a bit of red in the dark brown I chose and clipped chic side bangs into my hair. I really appreciate stylists who take what you want into consideration and collaborate to make your hair look better and Liza definitely did that. She even suggested that next time I come back that I come on Tuesday so she could give me the student discount because I go to grad school at Notre Dame. I will go back again and again.
When's the last time you saw a pretty, preppy white guy have his hair cut by a beautiful middle aged West Indian woman? Or the last time you were surrounded by some of the most vivacious, in the know Russian women? And when you come in, the owner is so excited to see you (or if you're new, meet and greet you)? Zena's is the best for a day of self indulgence. It doesn't hurt that the new massage spaces are attached to the new MV gym and if you bring your sneakers, they let you walk on the treadmill for free while you wait for your nails to dry! Honestly, when I go to Zena's, I feel like racism doesn't exist anymore and that truly Metropolitan people are making Baltimore the best it can be. You can almost always get an appointment for the time that you want and no one gives you the stink eye if you are a few minutes late. Make sure you have a hot rock massage from Tami (Tommy) and a deep facial with Deana! This place is delicious!
