Serious hole in the wall, but combines two of my favorite things excellently.

I wouldn't get not-Pizza here, though, that's nuts. There's regular Indian places everywhere, you want to go with what they're famous for.

Bit out of the way for me but I definitely have to make more special trips.

For the Pizza only. Janette and I finally got to try this after seeing Michelle and Eddie check in here a bunch of times.

Mango Lassi - a must order if you like anything mango. Pretty much an indian mango shake. Its similar to Mango Calpico, but thicker and more yogurty. This thing absolutely wrecks any mango shake (boba, ice cream, calpico, etc ), and its such a great order to cool down any spicy foods.

Indian Pizza - insanely addicting. I swear, Zante's tricks you into eating veggies with how good this pizza is. Stand a lone, you're getting a spinach, cauliflower, chicken tandoori, some shrimp, mozarella over a spinacy sauce and curry sauce layer. The pizza dough seems to be doughy, yet light (maybe Roti dough is thrown in), and have a yellow color, probably from tumeric. It is amazing. If you like a garlic pizza (similar to garlic clam pizzas), this is the pizza to get. While there is a lot of masking of flavor (the garlic is over powering at times, the tandoori is chopped so that there aren't many large chicken chunks or huge tandoori flavor), it just tastes freaking good (then again I can eat a ton of garlic).

The key to the pizza - ASK for spicy and sweet sauce. The spicy sauce is a cilantro/pepper cream based sauce... that is seriously crack. While hot stand alone, the heat actually goes away when mixed with the pizza and adds another layer of flavor, though it also heavily emphasizes the garlic. The sweet sauce appears to be a tamarind based vinegar/sugar sauce, which also adds a layer of complexity when combined with the pizza.

I can't emphasize how ridiculously addicting this pizza was. It really is so different.

4 stars for having tasty indian pizza!
    and for the thin crust!
and for delivering to my office (although they are on the other side of town!)

My mind says 3.75, but my heart says 4.
I think the .25 comes from my tastebuds always being thrown off by this so-called "pizza".
This will not taste like your regular pizza, or any other pizza you've had, for that matter.
It will taste like your favourite local indian buffet wrapped in garlic naan.
The regular best indian pizza tastes more like a mix of curry dishes, while the vegan
version tastes more like a mix of all the non-curry dishes - both equally yummy!

My friends had told me about this pizza and I had listened to their swoons dubiously.  Finally, I got a chance to try it for myself last night.  OMFG.

It may look like a pizza, and you may eat it like a pizza, but that is where the comparison ends.  The crust really isn't like any pizza crust you have ever had.  It is fluffy and buttery and naan-like. (My friends recommended the veggie version instead of the meat version.)  We ordered a veggie Korma dish and a spicy eggplant dish, along with the traditional spicy green sauce and tamarind sauce that I spooned onto it as well.    It was unbelievably good.  Just unbelievable.  The crust just soaked up the sauces and the flavors and the cheese was just enough to add a mellow richness.

Fantastic.  Our friends brought lovely bottles of wine - a Syrah and a Zinfindel.  Corkage is only $2.00 and they open the wine and provide wine glasses.

Both wines went well with the pizza, which stood up well to a good bottle of red.  I love San Francisco.  If Austin, TX, opened up a place like this (I'm from Austin), there would be lines out the door and around the block.

Watery, bland and overpriced.  Not even sure the lamb was lamb, because it was flavorless.  There were about 4 pieces of "lamb" in the order of vindaloo for $10.99, lame.  The channa masala had way too much cilantro and hardly any garbanzo beans.  You can't tell me they're expensive, because I know that they ain't.  The sauces were watered down or crappy.  I guess the pizza is the way to go, but how the hell would I know?  Not to mention I can't eat pizza.  The only reason they get 2 stars is that the food was edible.  Never again.

I dunno about their pizza but their Indian food was sub par.  Recently ordered a couple different types of curries and garlic naan for delivery and all 3 people who ate it agreed that it wasn't very good.  The naan was the toughest naan I had ever eaten at any Indian restaurant....just one step away from being as tough as the Chinese green onion pancakes.  The curry was a bit too watery and kind of bland.

I don't think I will be ordering from here again.  My sister also stated that the person over the phone was rude when placing the order.

We had the vegetarian pie and added tandoori chicken.  I'm glad I tried it, but probably won't be back.

Here's a tip though, those lamb samosas were mighty fine.

These folks sell Indian food, regular pizza, and Indian pizza. Don't be thrown off by the distractors: it's the Indian pizza you want here.

Why hasn't this concept been copied elsewhere? It's all the goodness of Indian food on a naan-like crust, with a garlicky curried sauce base and the added deliciousness of cheese. I mean, duh. It's the best ever. And they deliver! The vegetarian version has amazing curried cauliflower florets, and the meaty version adds lamb and/or curried shrimp. I think my favorite incarnation is either the vegetarian or just lamb.

The chutneys that come with the pizza (tamarind and mint-cilantro) are excellent dipping sauces for crust.

I understand their vegan Indian pizza is also incredible.

The vegetarian Indian pizza is one of my favorite delivery foods. I also enjoy their order online service. But keep your phone nearby for their order confirmation call and if you don't here from them in 15 minutes I would suggest just calling them yourself to confirm.

The pakora and samosas are also very fresh and flavorful and are a great addition to any Indian pizza order.

They deliver to most places in the city and are pretty fast.

San Franciscians are spoiled with tons of restaurants. You can get whatever you want, when you crave it and delivered to your house within 30 minutes to an hour. Even Indian Pizza. Zante's Pizza has been one of my favorite neighborhood pizzerias for a long time.

I wasn't feeling good and needed some pizza to tide over my sick stomach. Although Indian food may be too spicy for some, i find the blend of spices to be warm and savory. I didn't know if it would too much, but it was just what I needed.

I ordered the Small Indian Pizza with Meat ( Chicken Tandoori) and Samosa appetizer. The samosas are huge and the sauces for them are so good, I never pass these up ever.

I'm glad this place is still around, otherwise some people would never know how good the Indian Pizza is.

-1 star because the pizza always arrives warm and not hot like a delivered pizza should be.  These guys should invest in warming bags or something.

BUT delivery is free and they deliver all over SF so its only a small negative....

the pizza is truly amazing... I speak only about the Indian Pizza.... its so flavorful and tasty.  you have to try it!!!  The crust is soft and fluffy and the toppings are fresh and amazing.  Very garlicky but ohh so good!

One of my favorites in my 'hood.  Indian pizza is something you dream about, miss and always come back to.  Get it without the prawns though even if you like them.  Somehow it's just not right with them.  Free delivery and online ordering make this a no brained go to place.

I'd heard about this Indian pizza a while ago but never tried it till tonight.  My husband and I decided to make this a lazy Monday order-in night, and the plan was to have the delivery around 8pm, when he was planning on getting back home.  Since I got home first, I went onto GrubHub to browse for a new place to try.  I saw Zante and remembered I had wanted to try it before.  I checked quickly on Yelp and saw it had 4 stars and the first few reviews sounded reassuring, so since it was already 7:30pm, I quickly ordered several things, including an Indian pizza, of course.

It wasn't until AFTER I placed the order that I kept browsing the rest of the Yelp reviews out of curiosity.  And to my dismay, I saw the numerous reviews describing poor service, horrible delivery times of 2 hours, cold pizza, and mixed up or lost orders.  I get a sinking feeling in my stomach.  Our late dinner was going to become a very very late dinner....

    Or so I thought.

7:33pm - GrubHub order entered.  Estimated delivery time 8:23pm.

7:35pm - GrubHub confirmation email received.  Updated estimated delivery time is 8:25pm.

7:51pm - I call Zante to make sure the have at least received my online order.  The guy who answers the phone asks for my address, then quickly says "Yeah, we got your order.  It's leaving now."  short pause. "It's almost ready, it will leave in a few minutes."  Since it has only been 18 minutes since I put in my order, and since I've seen all the other Yelp reviews, I think to myself he must automatically say that for every phone call.  I ask him to read my my order.  He reads the items.  At least they really got the order.

7:56pm - Husband arrives home.  I tell him I ordered food but warn him we might have to wait a while, really worried that I ordered too quickly before doing thorough Yelp research....

8:04pm - Cell phone rings.  It's the delivery man.  He says he's downstairs.  I'm suspicious, thinking this is too fast to be real.  Is he calling before he's really here?

8:07pm - Delivery man arrives at our door with the food.  I'm in disbelief.  He's 18 minutes ahead of schedule, and barely half an hour after the order placed.

And the food?  It's all hot.  Normal take-out containers.  No soggy gooey cardboard boxes.  The pizza is quite good, and the rest (saag paneer, chicken mushroom, salad, raita, samosas) is pretty good too.  Lots of food for the price - enough for 3 full meals for the two of us.  We're both happy and very full!  Maybe I was just lucky?  Who knows.  I'd definitely order again.

It's a standard pizza crust w/ Indian-spiced sauce & veggies...I bet it could be recreated at home but the personalities of the staff make it worth the cost!

Our server was very "Bollywood" in his speech & mannerisms. My friend & I got quite the laugh out of his show of "ok, 2 slices Indian pizza, 1 veggie pakora, 1 tea. That's it? No tea for you? Just 2 slices Indian pizza, 1 veggie pakora & 1 tea?"

Pizza was decent - as noted above nothing overly special. But it was still good the next day as a cold slice. The pakora were over-fried. The balls were almost black & somewhat dry inside. The 2 sauces to dip them in are a spicy cilantro & a plum sauce.

Service here is very good though. They make sure you have everything you need all the time. Bollywood movies play on a TV in the background (kind of distracting) & the bathrooms are painted in cotton-candy (very feminie) pink. Credit cards accepted for totals over $15.

I finally coughed up some bucks to get a decent meal.  I got "The Best Indian Pizza" (with meat).  It was a little pricey at $26.50 for a large, but not that bad considering that a large with the same amount of toppings from one of those corporate pizza places (yuck) is about $22.

I call and they're really quick with getting down all your information, so be prepared.  They said it would take about 45 minutes, but it got here in 30 (however, I do live less than a mile away).  The box smelled amazing when I was walking it up my stairs.  I set it on the table and I didn't know what I was looking at.  It smelled like Indian food, but it was in the form of a pizza.

I bit into a slice and my taste buds didn't know what to expect either.  It was like I went to an Indian restaurant and put everything I ordered on a piece of naan and ate it.  Dough was spongy, flavor wasn't too over powering (for those of who who think Indian has too much stuff in it), but I like strong flavors and this Indian pizza didn't have what I was looking for. Sorry if I led you on.

I was also expecting chunks of tandoori chicken and lamb. But there were just little chopped pieces of each spread over it.

I'll stay away from Indian variations from now on.

Okay so it's indian flavored pizza. I will say I was expecting something a little more exciting than what came out. Everything was chopped up tiny and the flavors all ran together. Sure, it was more interesting than a cheese pizza, but I was hoping for even more flavor, and maybe some curry to dip it into. I don't know, it's worth trying just for the novelty, but I do not foresee returning.

I just wanted more Indian in my Indian pizza!!

I would rate them negative 5, but I dont have that option.

We placed an order online at 6p. They never called to confirm as their site says, so we called 20 min later.  They said our order is on its way, prob. in 10 min or so.

So at 8p, we called to see what the hell was going on.  They said they dont have our order.  their online ordering is not working today.  WTF?  when we called the first time, we mentioned that we ordered online.

    Never ordering from them again!!!

The Indian pizza is really something different and special.  I couldn't eat it more then once a month or so, but it is really tasty and if you are craving it pretty much nothing else will suffice.

However, I've watched the cheese pizza go from pretty good to pretty awful over the last few years.  I live down the street so their $2 cheese slices are one of the best cheap and quick meals you can find.  Unfortunately, there is just NO QUALITY CONTROL on this pizza.  Some days it is absolutely delicious - thick soft crust, w. lots of cheese and tasty sauce.  Other days (like last night), it's just a blob of dough oozing w. too much sauce and not enough cheese.  I can't fault them for the fact that sometimes the slices are kind of old - that's understandable.  But it shouldn't be such a COMPLETE CRAP SHOOT every time.

The Indian food itself is pretty boring from what I remember.  Not particularly flavorful.  I say go to Spicy Bite across the street if you want good Indian.

The Indian pizza is 4 or 5 stars, but everything else is a 2.  And they are really mean to the poor latino guys who make their pizza.  I don't know why they yell at them so much.

I like this place, but I think they have gotten a little smug with how popular they are, and stopped paying attention to the details.

If you like Indian pizza, then you'll love this place. A friend of mine recommended this as his go-to Indian Pizza restaurant. We split a medium sized Indian pizza and added tandoori chicken. It was quite yummy. The crust seemed to be lacking flavour but the rest of the pizza had a good taste to it. It doesn't get too crowded so you can sit and enjoy your food and converse with your friends as well without having to yell. It's well worth seeking out if you're in the Outer Mission/Bernal Heights area.

If you have nothing nice to say...

    OK fine.

Incredibly bland.  There are so many good restaurants in this city, and this is not one of them.  The tandoori chicken was inedible, the onion naan, was incredibly bland, even my beer was warm!   This was a complete waste of money.  Even the condiments were bland.  Will absolutely not order from here again.

Everything...seriously...EVERYTHING we ordered was delicious.  We tried both Indian pizzas, 2 chicken curry dishes, 2 vegetarian curries, 2 lamb curries, 4 types of naan bread and the kheer when I ordered for our office lunch.

The food was rich, delicious and had just enough spice!  They delivered to our office promptly and were friendly when they called to confirm our office address.

My mouth starts to salivate when I think about their food - it has def made it to our office's top 5 lunchtime spots.

In some cultures, it is customary to haggle over prices on just about everything, not just cars. So here is how to have a predictable, good experience with Zante's:

    1. 2 hours before you wish to eat, call Zante's and order your pizza. They will tell you it will be there in 45 minutes, they are lying.

    2. after an hour and 15 minutes, call and politely ask where it is, they will tell you "5-10 minutes away". more lies. Don't be discouraged if they simply pick up the phone and hang it up again. They do this when they're really busy. Keep calling until they'll talk to you. This step is crucial as you need to go on record at least once as complaining that your pizza is late.

    3. at 90 minutes after calling, pre heat your oven to 350 and wash your hands.

    4. at 2 hours, their driver will call you saying he's outside. when he hands you the pizza, but before giving him any money, open the box to confirm it's correct (they've been known to mix up pizzas and orders) and if it is yours, stick your finger in the cheese to confirm it's temperature (cold). Then tell the driver he's an hour and a half late, and the pizza's cold, and you'll give %65 of the price. He'll apologize profusely and accept your offer. In my case an X-Large Veggie indian pizza list price before tax and tip was $27.99, so this is a good one because you can basically whip out a $20 bill and say "take it or leave it"... they're not stupid and know that if you refuse the pizza it's a total loss, especially since you just stuck your finger in it. Don't feel bad about not tipping the driver, just like you wouldn't tip for crappy service in a restaurant.

    5. take your pizza inside and transfer it to a baking sheet and put it in the oven for 10 minutes, and enjoy. Their Indian pizza is really delicious after all.

Bottom line is their service sucks, and seems to get worse every time. There is no reason we should be expected to take it from them just because they have a one of a kind delicious product that no one else in town provides. Get the Pizza you want at the price you want to pay, and if you plan ahead, you can actually have it when you want it, not 2 hours after. If they want to start getting $30 for their pizzas again they can hire more drivers so they can get them to us in a timely fashion.

I love this place!  The vegan and vegetarian Indian pizzas are awesome.  I actually think the vegan one's a little better because they put a "creamy" spinach sauce on, i guess instead of cheese, which is really good.

As for all the complaints about delivery:  I ordered delivery for the first time last night, and it came in 50 minutes, just 5 minutes over the time they gave, which is better than most delivery services, and the delivery guy was the nicest delivery person I've ever met.  He gave me a tip on how to save money on my next order.  I just thought I'd share my good delivery experience to balance out all the negative ones.

If you like Indian food (and are ok with some good, strong spices), I highly recommend trying this place out.

    UGHHHHH!!!!!
    TERRIBLE!

Don't even think about ordering delivery from them.  They will take their sweet time and then argue with you and tell you to be patient when you've waited nearly 2 hours for a pizza.

40 min from the time I placed the order I called to see the ETA.  The curt man said my order was done and out the door.

Another 20 min later I called again.  They said it's on it's way still.

Then another 30 min after that I called again and they said the driver was 2 min. away from the house.

I didn't believe him and reminded him that it's been 1.5 hours since I placed the order, that he lead me on 50 min. earlier saying that it was done and it was with the driver.  I told him to just forget about it, cancel the driver, and to take the charge off the credit card.

Right away, the guy lied again and said that he just heard from the driver and he was outside my door.

I said that doesn't make sense because how could he hear back from the driver when we were still in the middle of this conversation?  Plus I didn't see anyone outside my house yet.
I reminded him he was misleading and I kept saying I didn't want the food anymore and to cancel the order.

He argued with me saying he won't cancel it and then hung up on me!!

Because he didn't listen, lied numerous times, argued with me, and hung up, my boyfriend had to call back and tell him we're canceling the order and won't accept the pizza and we'll dispute the money if it shows up on the credit card...

Transaction is still pending, we'll see if it goes through...

A similar circumstance occurred a few years back. It took them nearly 2 hours for a pizza to arrive.  At the time I lived in the same neighborhood as Zante's.  The pizza was cold and they charged me TWICE!!! It took me a month of back and forth phone calls with Zante's and having to finally go into the establishment to show them the double charge in order for them to finally refund the money.  They would have never done it otherwise.  I swore them off for years because of this and they "fooled me twice" with this new delivery fiasco.

I don't care how tasty to food is.  They are TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!! A BADLY RUN BUSINESS!!!

I ordered an Indian pizza for delivery while at work.  They told me 45 minutes for delivery.  55 minutes pass by, and I decide to call.  "It's on it's way, maam" the Zante's guy says over the phone.

An hour and 15 minutes pass by, and I decide to look at their Yelp reviews only to discover in horror reported wait times of up to 2 1/2 hours. I was SO HUNGRY at this point, I said in my head "AWWW, MAN!!!"  Fearing that I might have to wait another hour for my food, I start scheming ways to run to Walgreens for a Balance bar.  However, they showed up at right about an hour and a half after I ordered, thank GOD!  That could have been bad.

The Indian pizza is DELISH. Super good. Great flavors, fluffy naan dough...very yummy.  However, order way before you're hungry or you're S.O.L.

    Dear Zante,

Please don't ever stop making your Indian pizza.  My picky 21 month-old daughter -- who won't touch our regular Italian-style pizza -- nearly wolfed down an entire piece of your Indian pizza, while my 3 1/2 year old son ate 1  1/2 slices by himself!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Keep it coming, please.

    At least, I think I'm a fan....

While salivating reading about the "delicious" Indian Pizza and then reading the reviews about how they are liars and delivery is a nightmare. I received a Phone call 2 minutes ago from the driver who was calling from the car confirming where drop off the food. I put in a large order a little less than 20 minutes ago and it's Friday night. Am I lucky? Or should we cut them some slack? Running a restaurant is not the easiest thing in the world, especially when you are dealing with hungry people with low-blood sugar levels :) However... we will see if the food actually arrives in the next 5-10 minutes, either way... I'll be patient!
    To be continued...

Finally trekked to the outer Mission to try the famed Indian pizza.  We got there at 2:50, and even though they technically close at 3pm, they were really nice and accommodated us.

We got the veggie one and it was really, really good.  The dough is a little fluffier, like naan.  No paneer cheese, but the mozzarella really worked well.   My only recommendation is to stop at 2 slices.  I knew better but my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I went for the 3rd.  Holy food coma Batman!  I almost fell asleep on the 24 bus heading home.

Total cost was $34 including tax.  Totally worth it!

Ever since I moved away from the Mission, I haven't been able to find anything like Zante's. Their pizza was culinary crack fuel for so many starving-student all-nighters. Tender dough crusted with cornmeal and generously slathered with an Indian masala-cheese sauce, heaped with moist bits of chicken, red onions and garlic. O' heavenly aroma. My boyfriend would always wonder why there was a slice or two missing when I arrived at his house a few blocks away.

On more than one occasion, I've ordered a slice to-go and opened the box to find a quarter of a pizza or two slices. They take care of their regulars, is what I'm saying.

Other highlights: chicken makanwala and mango lassi, my fave in the city.

Just had lunch delivered from this place....

After waiting 2 hours for delivery, we called and enquired where our food was. We were told it would be here in less than 5 minutes. 15 minutes later we received a call asking for directions, and were told to stand outside and wait for them, because... well... I'm not sure, most other delivery folks can manage getting in the elevator and getting to the 3rd floor... After 20 minutes of waiting in the cold, they eventually showed up and gave us the food. Unfortunately waiting around for 2 hours messed up our plans for the day.

We took it up to our apartment and wow.... there was a lot of mysterious looking goo. I was rather surprised to open a tin foil package to see a cardboard box... with liquid in.... it got rather messy.

after eating some rice and... I'm not sure what... we turned to the chicken on the bone. Generally, back in England (where I am from) Indian chicken is in chunks, but I know different places in Indian prepare food differently, so I shrugged it off and took a bite. It tasted like rotting eggs. I know that it is NOT supposed to taste that way. This was some bad chicken, so that went straight into the compost bin.

On a brighter note, the Naan bread and raita were nice, however the rest was just a failure pile in a sadness bowl. Including the service.

I would not recommend this place at all. I don't generally place reviews, but this place was just so bad I needed to get it off my chest.

Zante's is a living parody of the modern pizza delivery experience:

The online ordering system is crude but way better than calling.
You may or may not receive a confirmation email.
Your food is definitely coming late if you order at a sane dining hour.
When you call they will definitely be curt and brief.
The driver will definitely get lost and be annoyed with you.

That said, this is some seriously good pizza and completely worth the trouble!  The price is also right: free delivery to anywhere in San Francisco and the specialty pizzas contain twice as many (exotic!) ingredients as comparably priced traditional pizzas.  Sure, you'll spend 30 bucks, but you'll be hella full by 2 small slices.

Points deducted for ass-tacular customer service and for the entrees sometimes come cold, probably because they're trying to satisfy the entire bay area with a small driving crew.  I've yet to dine there because I'm dread being served by with whomever picks up the phone, but I'm a huge fan of their food and couldn't recommend them enough -- if you have the nerve to put up with the soup nazi's of the indian pizza world.

You love Indian food? You love pizza? Boom - Zante's gives you both!

I was waiting for the bus on Cortland the other day and was starving. I had heard great things about their vegetarian pizza so decided to give it a try. It was like having indian food on your pizza. Strange, but true. You should definitely give it a try!

I've been ordering from this place for a long time (we live just a few blocks away) but the service has gotten so bad I can't recommend it anymore.

Their Indian pizzas are delicious (hubby isn't a big fan of pizza, but this he likes) with a nice light sauce, eggplant (I hate eggplant but this is good), cauliflower, shrimp and tandoori chicken all on top of a nice crust.

That said, the delivery takes so long that I think we're going to stop ordering from here. Last night we ordered a pizza at 8 PM on line (which we've done a number of times before). We got no email or phone confirmation that the order was in, and when I called back at 9:00, I was told it would be another 20 minutes. Clearly they had forgotten our pizza.

Then when the delivery guy showed up he just telephoned when he was leaving the resturant and left me standing on the porch in the cold waiting for him. Clearly he doesn't understand that you park the car (in the driveway for a minute if you have to) and actually ring the doorbell.

And the pizza was almost cold when he got here.

Zante has good food, but if you want good service go elsewhere.

This is quite literally my first review on Yelp, EVERRR.

And this is the establishment that has brought me to my knees.

From the very first moment you pick up your medium vegetarian Indian pizza, and that savory aroma seeps into the vessels of your vehicle, you know you've found heaven.

Every time I enter, the owner remembers me, and tells me how many times I have been in prior..."Three times today, right? I remember!"

I love Indian food, and this place not only serves up classic generous portions and flavor, but also substantially classy service.

    Thanks Zante's!

I know I live on a street that most San Franciscans have never heard of, but I get annoyed that every time I order from Zante's I have to give their driver step by step directions from whatever random street in the city they happen to be calling me from. Ten years ago this would have been typical- but we live in the era of computers, smart phones, and GPS. Please use one of them.

Otherwise I love their pizza. Perfect for hangovers or laying around like a lump days. :-)

They'll do "whatever you want"! That was our waiter's catch-phrase. They were super flexible on everything from orders to paying the bill. The food itself was absolutely delicious! We ordered half meat half veggie, but I only had the veggie. Others said the two tasted pretty much the same.

Pro tip: order the paneer and pour it on the crust (or the pizza itself, if you're feeling indulgent). Amazing!

They also deliver. If I lived closer than East Bay I would order this way too often!
