Boulder Creek, CA
I have a lot of food restrictions, and walked in here not knowing what to order. I don't eat gluten, balsamic vinegar, or dairy. I also try to limit nightshade vegetables. After quizzing the woman at the register, the owner stepped up and helped me choose the best option for my diet restrictions. I ordered the spiced chicken kebab with tahini, along with the Persian Herbed Rice. It was delicious and the flavors all went together really well. As a starter, we ordered the sweet potato fries were nice and crispy, served along with pomegranate walnut sauce. They gave me some extra tahini sauce for the fries, as there was something in the pomegranate walnut sauce that I didn't eat, I can't remember what. My husband got the lamb with the mint pesto. He preferred it with the pomegranate walnut sauce that came with the sweet potato fries. My 2.5 year old song got a flatbread pizza that he was very happy with.
All in all, this was really yummy food with a family friendly atmosphere. The decor and lighting somehow felt welcoming to kids, but still was nice enough that you might feel OK coming here for a casual date. My son enjoyed his food enough that he was well behaved enough that my husband and I could enjoy ours, so that is a huge plus for us! -

I wanted to like this place but the young kids behind the counter we're more concerned with making food for themselves than they were for making my food. We were the only customers. Also the two guy cooks were trying to show off for the young girl cashier. I had high hopes this place was going to be good but the owner was obviously not around.
Either one of the guys has a fat lip or he is actually chewing tobacco while making food.
So the food finally got here and it looks great. Large portions and attractively served. The saffron chicken was very bland. The lamb was pretty good. The look of the food far exceeded the flavor.
This place gets 5 stars for decor. But the terrible service and bland unseasoned food gets 2 stars. I am going to guess and say the owner doesn't come in that often. The owner set it up and expects it to run on its own. -

The only reason this doesn't get a five is that it's a "tad" pricey for what you get. That said, you can't actually even GET/BUY this food at this quality anywhere else for at least an hour's dive...so take my frugality with a grain of salt.
Savory, yummy and very large portions. Don't let your eyes get bigger than your stomach here 'til you know what you like best...there's so much to choose from. Even if you rule out lamb over beef or chicken over a vegetarian choice (they're ALL very good by the way), the combinations of mains, sides and sauces can be overwhelming. Don't let it be...'cause everything's soooooooooo good! Just reserve yourself to coming back many times. Plus their daily specials mix it up for you, just when you thought you tried it all.
Don't be shy here. They're very friendly and very helpful. If you don't' know where to start...describe your tastes and ask them to help you order. My personal recommendation is anything that includes the slow roasted spicy lamb. It's consistently amazing, juicy, tender and so savory.
The only thing I'd skip here is their "new" (winter 2011/2012) shoestring fries -- once they've cooled down even a tad they're pretty blah...which is truly unlike anything else on their menu. And besides, their sweet potato fries are excellent, so get those instead!
The decor is Mediterranean pleasant (not garish or overly done), and every now and then, there'll be a musician nearby, quietly playing some nice Mediterranean music while you eat outside (pretty patio with lots of flowers). -

Love the falafel pizza, food is great for the price. The saffron chicken and spiced chicken kebab are awesome!
The falafel itself is not fabulous but again for the price it isn't bad. -

I don't know if sweet potato fries are an authentic Mediterranean dish but they were awesome regardless! Everything else was fresh and flavorful too.

This place has a mediterranean menu with variety that goes from kebabs to flatbread pizzas and soups and salads. I really liked the roasted vegetable flatbread pizza. Their hummus was good and I will try one of the wraps next time I go.
If it's a nice day out, there's a nice patio to sit outside. -

A group of us came here for dinner and it was perfect for us. You can order your food, pay by credit credit card at the counter, and someone delivers the food when it's ready. I ordered the Spicy Lamb (ground lamb) and the Moroccan Madness soup. I enjoyed everything, but I will try the lamb kebab next time. Although we did not have reservations, we arrived by 5:30pm did not have to wait.

After our meal at Zameen's, I told my wife that nothing we had eaten (and we all share) was disappointing save one thing - the falafel. But I will explain.
We ordered the sampler with Kalamata olive, Red Pepper, and Tahini hummus, eggplant, dolmas (stuffed grape leaves), and falafel with pita bread. The keyword in this dish is "Fresh." The pita was warm and dusted with flour, the eggplant the tastiest I've ever had (and my wife likes it so that is a decent amount of eggplant), and the hummus' was unique and spicy and well-seasoned. I did not taste the dolmas, and I did not mind because I think they only use the grape leaves because they are leftover from all the wine they make, and they don't need to anymore.
On to the falafel. I visited Israel in 2005 and I had falafel from street vendors maybe 4-5 times. It was simple, crispy, and delicious and they barely had to try at all. They whipped balls of seasoned chickpeas into the deep fryer like penguins falling off of an Anarctic glacier. Zameen's just tried a bit too hard on the Falafel and I was disappointed.
But five stars for the following:
Greek Burger - I don't know what they put on that burger, but it was the best sandwich sauce, beef patty, even the bread was soft and warm and perfect.
Halloumi cheese kebob - If you just read that and thought "Hmm, Halloumi? A type of cheese I've never heard of. Eh, maybe I'll try it some time." NO! You should rephrase that sentence to say "AHHHHH I NEED TO TRY THIS!!!" Halloumi is Greek cheese you season, grill over the fire, it will warm up and keep it's shape and turn brown on the outside and taste better than most cheese that is cooked on heat.
Wheatberry and Tomato salad - What is a wheatberry? I don't know, but I love them. Great dressing, texture, a little pricey, but worth it.
Zameen's does a great job with everything and is well decorated, decently priced, and has delicious food. They have gone with the recent trend of not having servers and you just order at the counter, which was a little bit annoying when we wanted refills, but otherwise fine.Listed in: Must-Go's in Santa Cruz County

Was in the area and after looking on Yelp for a place to have dinner, we dropped by Zameen. It's not actually a restaurant, but rather, you order from the counter and once the entrees are done, you pick it up and sit down.
The decor is incredible! I love the tiles and the lighting. I had a platter with saffron chicken, tzatziki, moroccan madness, and saffron rice - delicious! -

Found this place by accident after visiting the Bamboo Giant. A casual but nicely decorated interior and patient, excellent service round out the fantastic experience here.
I ordered the special, the Spicy Lamb which is a ground lamb mixture with potato slivers and a sauce that was to die for. When I first get the meal, I was a bit skeptical, I'm not really into ground meat but with the cous cous and pomegranate walnut spread, this dish was amazing. Flavors that were bold and smoothly blended into a sweet and savory delight. This is amazing food at a reasonable price. It's fresh, delicious, and my only gripe is that I wish I lived in Aptos so I could come here more often.
Oh, and they had a couple of musicians playing outside during the weekday lunch hours! It completed an amazing meal! -

This place is hit-and-miss. Sometimes my order is perfect and other times mess it up. Last time I was there, my order was packed poorly and didn't include the bread with the hummus. Disappointing. However, the food is delicious, typically. I hope the service improves.

Awesome! From the flavors to the service.
We ordered a gyro wrap - enough for two and SO fresh and tasty. Their tzatiki is absolutely perfect. Also ordered the mezze sampler platter. Love the hummus love the dolma.
Food is fresh, clean, true to flavor. Can't wait to try others.
Service is excellent for being a counter place. The owner is there, in the dining room adding those little extra touches. Once he realized we were splitting the gyro, he sent it back to the kitchen to slice & separate it. Or when he noticed me waiting in the back of the long order line to get my water refilled, he grabbed the pitcher & filled it back up so I didn't have to wait.
Again, this is a counter service place so the little extra touches make it that much more comfortable.
Love it. Would go again...maybe today :) -

I've been wanting to go to Zameen's for awhile, so one of my friends & I tried it. I have Mediterranean roots, so I was looking forward to see how their food is.
I got the platter, Lamb Shish Kebob($16.95) with special sauce, a salad, and a side. I tried the mint pesto(special sauce) which wasn't bad mixed with some of the other sauces, it came on the side so it wasn't a big deal if you don't like it. The salad was a decent size and the sides were different types of rice or skewered potatoes. I was really disappointed that they didn't have rice pilaf. That's a regular in Mediterranean foods. So, I opted for the skewered potatoes which were really good. The lamb was nice and tender and the seasoning was good and went well with the meat.
It was a lot of food for $16.95. They do have other things, wraps, salads, flatbread pizzas. The wraps looked huge. They are definitely not stingy on their food. They have sides of yogurt, a jalapeno sauce, and salsa. All very good with the flatbread.
I will definitely go back to Zameen's and try out some other dishes. When we were there the place filled up and every table was taken - I would say that's a good sign. -
Review from Dave K.
I walked by this place at first without noticing it and then stopped in for a quick lunch yesterday. The service was warm and friendly, the interior clean, modern, and not too crowded for early afternoon on a Sunday.
I had the spicy chicken wrap which was very good. The chicken, as promised, was loaded with yummy spices. It came inside a huge piece of seemingly home-made pita bread (with fresh dry flour on the outside) and was filled with a nice salad mix with fresh red onions. I ordered it with the tahini sauce, which came on the side, and went very well with the other flavors.
Only gripe was the name: call it the spicy chicken pita as it's not on classic wrap bread and the contents are way too big to wrap inside the pita and eat as finger food -- knife and fork required. -

This is my favorite mediterranean place right now! Incredible food and sauces across the board. The falafel pizza is ridiculously good, as are their sweet potato fries, kebabs, wraps, and everything else we tried. Out of the 4 times I have been here, only had a single issue. They forgot one of the orders, and to make up for it they gave us 2 ginormous slices of desert to take home in addition to the order (all amazingly good). That's quality customer service!

One of the local dentists in the area introduced me to Zameen. His office sends other offices little snacks and goodies from time to time and will use Zameen. I was immediately impressed by their food. It was fresh and flavorful.
When it came time to cater an event for work, I immediately thought of Zameen because it was something apart from the usual veggies, dip, and sandwiches or the pizza you usually expect at such events. Ed Watson was so amazingly helpful in putting together a menu for my budget and was so responsive and was so friendly. There was a ton of food and it was a big hit. I recommend Zameen for parties, but also for just lunch or dinner. Their spicy chicken flatbread is amazing, as are their crostini and Persian rice salad. They have great atmosphere and great food. I hope you'll go if you are reading this and are in the area. -

I went to Zameen recently based on the recommendation of a friend. I really enjoyed it. The casual atmosphere, the decor, the people - it all feels easy to be there. I ordered a flat bread pizza sort of thing with goat cheese and fig chutney, it's a nice combination of sweet and a little salty - I would order it again. Well done Zameen, keep it up!

I LOVE Zameen! Look forward to eating here every time I visit my family in Santa Cruz. Everything I have had here is amazing, so tasty, generous portion sizes and such reasonable prices!
If you are looking for high-quality, authentic Mediterranean food at a great price Zameen is perfect! So many options, salads, apps, flatbread pizzas and entrees.. I always know whether alone or with a group, everyone will have a fab meal..Love it all, but favorites are the lamb wrap w/ pomegranate walnut sauce, all the flatbread pizzas and their baklava..YUM!!
The service and staff are wonderful, always helpful and super accommodating. We have used Zameen to cater events and they are great!! Whether for a large event or family gathering, they are reliable, organized, and really take the time to help you decide on the best menu for your event..And most importantly, everyone is always asking - who catered this?!
I grew up in Santa Cruz and Zameen by far is one of my favorite restaurants!! Takeout, dine-in, catering, I use Zameen for all and def recommend stopping in if you haven't! -

This restaurant is a winning formula. Variety, fresh everything, beautiful dining environment, friendly staff, and an unusual but refreshing way to order that makes decision-making very easy. This is always my first suggestion among places to have dinner when in Aptos with friends or family.

Found this place on Yelp after driving around Highway 1 with some college friends--definitely a great find! I had the spiced chicken kabob wrap which was about $10, and my friends had the lamb kabob platter with soup ($19) and steak kabob wrap ($12). The meat was flavorful and tender, the vegetables were fresh and nicely browned, and the pita bread was warm and soft! You order at the counter and seat yourself and then the servers bring the food over. The food came out pretty quickly, and we weren't kept waiting for too long. The counter staff were extremely nice, upbeat, and helpful in deciding which sauces were good since I don't go to Mediterranean places that often. Would come back if I'm in the area again!

Everything I've tried here has been very good, including their wine. I usually go with the hummus, and greek salad with chicken and pomegranite-walnut sauce.
The menu is kind of tricky here but the staff will patiently explain it to you. You can specify your choice of salad, meat, and sauce. Or you can order something straight off of the menu. There are many different options! Oh and the lamb wraps are super huge and fantastically good. I think I inhaled mine.
Just make sure you have some hearty red wine to savor with your delicious food. If this place were closer to my house, I'd be there once a week.
Zameen's is great if you are getting your food to go. If you're going to eat in, it's OK but really casual and there aren't many tables. -

San Jose, CA
Seriously. I went in there just for some nice, middle eastern food. It was more a mix of moroccan, greek, persian, lebanese (and all on one plate). It was pretty expensive considering the tastes. The lamb was a bit tougher than i'm accustomed to, the tabbouleh tasted too salty and comepletely unbalanced. The bread was definitely not fresh. The harissa was not spicy, but only seriously bitter.
I know it's not a home-cooked meal, but seriously. Is it food? I think the food at the chevron gas station near there is 10x better.
At least it has a nice decor. -

Best Mediterranean food I have had outside of New York City. Really delicious. Nice atmosphere, friendly service. HUGE portions. We had the hummus appetizer and the falafel wrap. One wrap could easy serve two people. Fresh flavors, and Jean is still talking about the fig and balsamic sauce. Looking forward to going again soon. A much needed addition to the mid-county food scene. Noticed that they had a nice kid's menu too. Be advised-not open on Mondays.

I really enjoyed my meal here. I had the vegetable wrap (FYI they usually cook the veggies in butter, but can sub oil) an order of sweet potato fries and a diet coke.
The vegetable wrap was filled with large lightly cooked slices of yellow squash, portabello mushroom, onion, red pepper, zucchini and raw lettuce, tomato and onions. On a really nice fluffy but not dense tortilla?flat bread? It seemed like a tortilla to me...
The tahini sauce was thin and light, and not very flavor full. More like a dressing, but there was plenty for the whole dish, not like other places where I am left wanting more dressing.
The sweet potato fries with muhammara dipping "sauce" which was quite thick, was wonderful. I'm pretty sure the fries are deep fried so you bet they were yummy. A small order for the price, but it was actually just the right amount. I guess I'm used to being stuffed and having some to take home at other places.
Sodas are canned, so $1.50 is it, no refills. Although they offered a glass with ice, which was nice :)
I like the way you order and take a number to your table. No waitress hovering, and it's easy for meet ups; no stress over splitting the bill.
Although I think you could easily make my meal at home, it was quite basic and the prices are a little high, I will be back, it was a nice change of pace for me. -

I was thrilled to discover this little gem in Aptos! Everything we tried was top notch. The falafel and hummus were divine. The fig, goat cheese and prosciutto pizza was out of this world!!! Extremely fresh ingredients. Portions are so hearty that we were able to take left overs with us to the beach.
We can't wait to make the drive from San Jose to sample the rest of the menu. Additionally, Zameen is a tastier and superior value to many of our local Mediterranean options in San Jose (Santana Row). -

Santa Cruz, CA
What a shame when one item is so unacceptably bad that it ruins the whole dining experience.
This strip-mall establishment offers only fast-food-style self-service and suffers cramped uncomfortable seating. The pricey mediterranean food was pretty good until the disaster dish. Our hummus variety sampler was a delicious accompaniment to the heavily-cucumbered starter salads. My kabob chicken was bland but helped by the pomegranate-walnut sauce adding some flavor. The saffron rice was quite good. But my wife so anticipated the promise of "slow-roasted" lamb. Unfortunately she was utterly disgusted by the tough, dried out reality.
The staff seemed concerned but surprised when she reported the problem and offered to make her something else. Too late; appetite and first impression ruined. -
Review from Daddy O.

Zameen is pretty much great. Especially considering the lack of -quality- ethnic eateries in Santa Cruz. You know, it's funny, I'm discovering more and more places in mid and south counties that just plain beat the pants off of SC digs. Now, before you go off charging down to Aptos for some quality Mediterranean food, double check your expectations. Also, check your watch and calendar. These folks close down quite early (8PM), and are closed on Mondays.
First of all, this is not your average restaurant, certainly not for elite Aptos. You order diner-style at the counter, get a number, and take a seat. No high-brow wait-service here. The wait can be kind of long to get to the register and get your food but it's worth it once it arrives. I must admit I was also a little put off by the dirty utensils on my table. I went to get a new fork and had to literally weed through the dirty ones to find one that was adequately clean.
The food itself was pretty excellent. We ordered the appetizer sampler platter, which included three types of hummus, flatbread, taztziki, dolmas, and a mint eggplant dip. My favorite thing on the sampler platter and perhaps the entire menu is the kalamata olive hummus. Absolutely divine.
Dining options are basically served up one of three ways, for varying prices. Wrap, Salad, or Platter. Having read about discontented yelpers and Zameen's wraps, and since we were about to shrivel up and starve, we decided to share two entre platters: slow braised lamb in pomegranate sauce (which was seasoned perfectly, tender, but a bit too dry), and saffron chicken breast kabob. The chicken dish was good too, but again kind of dry. One dish came with some saffron basmati rice with currants. Tasty. The other was served with roasted tahini potatoes. Also yum.
Dessert looked delicious, but man, we were so full from the mega-sized platters that we couldn't even force it! Drat. Good thing the food was good enough to inspire return trips.
One more thing. They do offer beer and wine which is nice. Although I'm pissed at them for displaying their line up so far away from the counter that I was lured into buying myself and a friend St. Pauli Girls (I've always wanted to try it). The cashier opened up the beers and we get to the table and they're NON-ALCOHOLIC!!! First of all, it should be kept someplace separate; second of all, it should be clearly described as such. What a disappointment. I thought for half a second about speaking up to get the right beer, but I got the impression they were going to charge me, so I just grumbled dealt with it.
Maybe next time I'll BYOB since they don't charge a corkage.Listed in: Ethnic Eateries in Santa Cruz…

Review from Erin W.
I brought my adventurous parents to Zameen last night, all because of the great review I read by Bradley O. Having recently moved back to Santa Cruz after a 4 year stint in Washington DC, I am eager to find some worthy competitors to Etete, Vietnam Cuisine, and Rice (all in DC).
Zameen just may do the trick here. The food was really delicious. After much contemplation, I ordered the lime-saffron chicken breast kebab over a Greek salad, with a walnut pomegranate vinaigrette. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. The walnut pomegranate dressing brought out even more flavor in the meat. My father got the lamb gyro and seemed content. My step-mother ordered the same chicken as me but had it with the grilled vegetable salad - she LOVED it but found the portion to be too large for one meal (not necessarily a bad thing).
Before the meal was over, we were already talking about planning a return visit in order to sample more of the menu. The mezze platter, dates/walnuts/parsley/celery salad, and citrus yogurt cake are on my list for next time! -

Zameen is a pleasant little place with lots of tile and Moroccan-feeling décor. There is a large outdoor seating area.
Though the protocol here is take-out place (you order at the counter), the ambience is definitely pleasant and cozy enough to eat in (the server will bring the food to your table if you're staying).
They have a samovar behind the counter, from which I got a cardamom infused Darjeeling brew.
I got the spicy chicken kebab wrap - you can choose any of their "meats", including a veggie selection and marinated halloumi cheese, in either wrap, salad or platter ( this comes with a side of your choice), with a variety of sauces. I chose the tzatziki - which was ok, but very heavy on dill and light on garlic for my taste. I prefer the eye-watering garlic variety. Nevertheless, the yogurt base was good with the spicy chicken. The chicken was very tasty and the tomatoes and lettuce were fresh and delicious. (Local organic produce served here too - Santa Cruz county's getting pretty good at that)
They make their own flatbread here which is used for their flatbread dishes, pizzas, tzatziki appetizer, and wraps. Caveat: I'm not a big bread person anyway - but when it's really really good I love it. This was. . fine. But I ended up mostly eating the innards of the wrap out with a fork. Make of that what you will. A good multipurpose vehicle, but not fabulous on its own. Needed salt. Next time I'll get a salad or platter. Not super cheap . Said wrap, $8.95, plus tea, 'bout $11.
They offer a variety of pan-meditteranean appetizers, homemade spanikopita and baklava, and a soup du jour, a great list of bottled beers, wine, Izze soda, as well as the usual fountain drinks.
On my list of things to try next time? The slow roasted lamb, Marrakech slaw, and the sweet potato fries - "with middle eastern seasoning served with pomegranate walnut sauce."
Yes please. -

My favorite Mediterranean place in the Santa Cruz area. It's in a cute little strip mall and it's pretty close to Cabrillo College.
It's a little on the pricey side but it's about average for Santa Cruz. The food is amazing. Their pita is the best pita I have ever had. It's moist and not at all dry like others. Their portions are pretty big. Their salads are good and so is their skewers.
They have a little sauce bar where you can get your own sauces. So good.
Such a great place! -

MM mm MMMM ahh the smoothest most spreadalicious, hummus, baba ganoosh (sp?)maybe not baba cause its really smokey eggplant dip), and this figgy spread stuff ...WOW...Tabbouleh, dolmas Tzatziki and these wood fired oven "pizza" things. Holy crap Homer this place makes some really good Middle Eastern/ Nouveau Eastern Food.
They have kebabs and this mint pesto spread and oh I gotta stop or I'll have to drive back right now. The guy who runs it is a Brit chef I believe so there is a nice twist on some really great old school food. Oh and try the Saffron Chicken Kebab. Nice space and the wood fired oven gives it a cozy feel. -

Oh baaaaby this place is good.
Warm flat bread, deliciously cooked meat and a variety of tasty sauces (try the jalapeno olive sauce)...you can't get any better! I devoured my order of the spicy chicken kebob wrap in an embarrasingly short amount of time...groaning and moaning in delight the whole time.
By the time I licked all of my fingers, blotted my lips, sighed and looked up, my friends had stopped eating and were staring at me with a mixture of shock and amusement.
I didn't care...it was THAT good. -

I just LOVE the food here. It is so incredibly fresh, with a lot of variety and healthy options. The atmosphere is relaxed and on a nice day, the outside tables are great.
