Review from laura h.
I have been lucky enough to visit Zama several times now following an MVA that left me with a serious pain in the neck. I have been very impressed by the friendly, professional, and expert massage therapists! I have also been impressed by how knowledgeable all of the massage therapists are. I have learned something important about my body and health during every visit so far. Zama has got it going on!
So far I have worked with Jarrod, Lisa, and Lynn. All three of them are amazing! I have been to many massage therapists in my life and let me tell you, these people are top notch in every way. Lisa is wonderful in every way and also trained in Cranio-sacral massage, which is amazingly relaxing and rejuvenating, I highly recommend trying it.
Lynn is truly an expert in deep muscle work. I tend to prefer a deeper massage and even somewhat painful (in a very good way) massage and Lynn really knows her stuff . I have only seen her twice but she has helped me so much already. Thank you Lynn!!
Jarrod was amazing with the deep muscle work as well and regular massage. Our schedules haven't matched up but I would definitely go back to see him. He made me feel totally comfortable, relaxed, not to mention he really knows his stuff and has an amazing touch!
Another big plus for me is that I can get so much info from the Zama website. I can also schedule and cancel/reschedule appointments if needed right on the website, I love that. They send me friendly reminders so I won't forget my appointments. Thank you, very helpful for a busy Mom like me. I also want to mention the relaxing atmosphere along with the complimentary tea and water they offer to help relax you as you sit in the comfortable and relaxing lounge.
The massage rooms and waiting area are very tastefully decorated with relaxation in mind. I can't wait to return to Zama. -
Review from Janet L.
After my initial review the owner, Lynn, contacted me and asked me to give Zama another try. I didn't think my original review was bad (3 stars is A-OK after all), but it wasn't great either and she was very concerned that my experience wasn't as good as it could have been.
I took her up on her offer and this time had a massage with Lisa. Wow, is all I can say. I feel cheesy saying this but it was the best massage I've ever had. Lisa is super friendly and attentive and checked in with me during the massage a few times at key points, which I really appreciated. I liked how she gently guided my breathing and form to better relax and benefit from the massage.
After talking with Lynn and then getting a more in-depth explanation from Lisa about the aromatherapy, I now understand that it's more than just smelly lotion... educating me about the quality and benefits helped me understand the value better. Although I'll be totally honest, I still don't think I would pay $25 for it... but I'm cheap.
I appreciate Zama for taking feedback seriously and I'm glad I gave them another chance. This time they did everything right, and I feel like they earned 5 stars - I plan to return again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Can't talk...just...had...a...massage...
I have the normal aches and pains associated with a 40 hour/week office job that most everyone else has. My right shoulder tends to work its way up to my ear, my lower back gets sore from bad posture...you all know what I'm talking about. But, I'm not one to complain or treat myself to something decadent like a massage. That is, until I found a 1/2 price Groupon for Zama. I bought one for me and one for Julie as a belated birthday present and we decided to make an appointment for after work this evening.
I had a 60 minute massage with Lisa who was (in simple terms) amazing. She was strong but gentle which made for a great experience. She listened to my body and watched my facial expressions to make sure she was doing everything I need her to. She checked in with me often to make sure I was comfortable and not in pain. The 60 minutes flew by like that (imagine me snapping my fingers) and I already am thinking about the next time I'll buy myself a treat. Maybe a birthday massage will be in order*.
Lisa and I talked about office work and things that I can do at the desk to alleviate some of the pressure on my body and also showed me some deep stretches that will help my tired shoulders and neck.
*my birthday is October 16th if anyone was thinking about buying me a present (hint, hint) -

After reading everyone's reviews I was excited to go try Zama, but I was fairly disappointed.
I had a Friday afternoon appointment starting right at 3 PM. I got there only a minute or two early (I DO try to be about 15 minutes early to other places but was running later than I would have liked. However, I was NOT instructed to show up early either). I was greeted at the reception by my masseuse and given the short paperwork to fill out. I filled it out the paperwork which took only about 2-3 minutes and then sat and sat, waiting for my masseuse who had disappeared.. I even got up to look for her after waiting a while but no one was around. I probably waited about 10 minutes or more - which in itself wasn't a huge deal to me. Then she took me in to the room, and left so I could undress. I did this and again waited probably another 10 minutes - which again isn't a big issue. ... but read further...
The massage itself was okay. I can't say that it was that great and I got the feeling that the masseuse wasn't really into it. She finished very awkwardly and abruptly. She actually just stopped the massage (no closure to it) and I looked up to see her putting her coat on and walking out as she said "thank you and I'll see you outside". Immediately I thought to myself, "that couldn't have been an hour?! I got up and looked at the clock. It was only 4:03 PM which means that with all the waiting I did the massage couldn't have been anymore than 40 minutes. At first I thought maybe she thought I only had a 45 minute massage scheduled but then the receptionist still charged me for a full 60 minutes. I didn't say anything to the receptionist... because, well, what do you say? I don't feel I got my money's worth?
So I left feeling a bit confused, disappointed and with a mediocre massage. I think I might still try this place again but definitely with a different masseuse and I definitely know to get there at least 15 minutes early.

Zama is AWESOME. I went on my birthday for a relaxation-focused hour-long Swedish massage with Amy, and was so blissed out that I was almost glad when I had back pain a couple of weeks later and had an excuse to go back for some more back-focused work. I would highly recommend Zama to any of my friends.
Price: Zama gives a REALLY good deal. You get an amazing massage at one of THE best rates in all of Portland.
Atmosphere: peaceful, soothing, relaxing music, low lights, spa setting. The location is easy to get to, and after my last massage I walked around the corner to my car and had to walk past picnic tables outside Cha Cha Cha, laden with beautiful food and cold beer.... I might have to plan to stop there afterward next time.
People: Attentive, peaceful peeps run the place. Massage therapists are wholly on their game with extensive experience and great techniques (just read the bios of their staff on their website). I especially recommend Amy, because she's one of the best massage therapists I've ever had a massage from and she's the only one I've booked with at Zama. But my partner has had a massage from Troy and absolutely raved about it.
Massage: Just about ANY technique or style is available, given the broad range of skills the therapists possess. Amy offers a grounding, focused, ultra-relaxing massage and is able to read the telltale muscle signs in the body fluently. She's amazing!
Summary: dude, go there. You won't regret it. -

Gotta agree with the other yelpers, this place is the bomb! AND, I decided to go there based on the excellent reviews on Yelp, so thanks yelpers. I got a 45 minute deep tissue with Rachael and she did a great job. I had so much tension and knots in my back and once my appointment was finished I felt like a million bucks!! The last deep tissue I got was pathetic compared to this. Also, the customer service here is really great. They are very nice and welcoming and make you feel right at home. Plus, the price point is unbeatable. I usually pay $50 for a 30 minute and here I got 15 extra minutes for that much. Plus, she gave me a $10 coupon off my next visit. How can you beat that?

Aradia was incredible. I have been experiencing neck and shoulder pain and poor circulation since I was young. After my second massage with Aradia I felt for the first time in years what it's like to be free of pain. I had no idea I could feel so good. I had no idea what health I was missing out on. I've been to so many massage therapists about these issues and none have come even remotely close to the healing that Aradia was able to provide.

I've had two great massages here (with different therapists). Most recently, Lynn walked all over me and it was fantastic. She uses her feet like most masseuses use their hands and forearm but the resulting effect was incredible. Deep but comfortable pressure that seemed to massage more of the muscle.

I was really impressed by Zama, I think it was the best massage I have ever had. I was a little bit unsure what Zama would be like based on the unassuming entrance next to cha cha cha but as soon as I walked in I saw how nice the space is. Great relaxing scents, comfy furniture, low lighting, complimentary tea... I felt more relaxed as soon as I sat down! But getting to the good stuff- my massage from Kat was fantastic! I was so impressed, I didn't want to leave. I can't wait to have another excuse to treat myself and get another massage at Zama!

Zama is the best! I have been going here to get massages from Lisa for about a year and these are the most consistently good and effective massage services that I have received. Lisa has really helped me with my chronic back issues- she is fabulous at what she does. Prior to going to Zama, I had been hopping from one massage therapist to the next and now I am finally settled and so happy to have found Lisa! As an added incentive, I really love using the online booking system here and find it very convenient.
