good good good.
family owned and operated since long before i was born. the secret is the ovens. decades of flavor packed into those things makes this pizza inimitable.
a note on the general info, they do take reservations, but only for parties of 6 or more. just a little aside.
but still good good good
OMG, I f*cking LOVE Zaffiro's. Great ,thin-crust pizza. Good service.
It's a f*cking institution. Do it. Now.
Really good but you gotta like American tavern-style paper-thin crunchy crust pizza to like it. Its not for everyone. Service is very friendly, prices are not bad. Things other than the pizza probably should be skipped (both salads, appetizers ive tried have been pretty lame). The pizza makes up for it.
A few people complained on here about the smokiness which has never bothered me, though I've only gone during the day and late at night.
In Wi. from Ca. with my son to see 9'rs game vs the Pack. Checked Yelp for pizza place. Chose Zaffiro's since it has been in business since b/4 I was born.
Got to say best thin crust pizza ever. My 19 yr old son is pizza king and he could not believe how good it was either. When the pie got to our table I first thought we would not be able to finish. We fought over last piece.
the restaurant itself is great, a bar in front and a back room for dining.
Great waitress, good cocktails. Great spot.
Only downside was no sink in mens room.
Best pizza, that's all I ever ordered here. Can't speak for any other menu items. If you are ordering anything besides pizza you're crazy. Great service. No complaints.
Milwaukee's best slice far and away. I've been going to Zaffiro's as long as i can remember with my family, and I'll never forget the first time i walked in... Big Italian men that look strait out of the mafia smoking cigars in the bar area followed by a dining room with the classic red and white checkered tables like in all old fassioned italian dives. I was afraid someone was gonna walk out of the bathroom with a gun that was taped behind the toilet. The pizza is one thing i will never forget, it's like toppings put on a cracker. The only thing that the pizza isnt good for is filling you up. Me and 2 friends went there our feshman year at uwm and ate 4 large pizzas.
Zaffiro's puts it's neighbor Pizza Shuttle in its place as a good drunk stop and nothing more.
This pizza pub was recommended to me approximately 1 year ago and I have been going there ever since. (What I have been missing!!) Small and quaint and friendly people. Sometimes the bartender even puts on a show. But enough with the small talk.......getting to the point....ZAFFIRO's is the best thin crust pizza I have EVER eaten here in Milwaukee and other cities that I have visited. Great price and great taste. Was just rated number 1 in "Shepard's" magazine. Also, the salads are the 'bomb' too. Oh, it's lunch time....time to go to Zaffiro's.
Love the thin crust. One of the best thin crust pizzas I've had. So crispy. Sauce is perfect.
Old school atmosphere. Friendly service.
Somehow iceberg lettuce=a salad with a slice of some vegetable or another tastes good at this place. It goes with the simplicity of the food, decor, etc.
The wait can be awfully long, so be prepared to get a drink at the bar and STAND!!!
The bf and I popped in here for a meal before our afternoon of brewery goodness. We didn't seek it out - it just happened to be the first restaurant we saw after we parked the car!
Upon entering, you're shown to a small dining room that looks like it is straight out of the 50s. The food was great, though! They do cracker crust pizza, and man, is it good. We indulged in an "Everything But Fish" and it was delicious - lots of topping and a very crispy crust.
Service was friendly, prices are cheap, and the food is good. What more could a girl want?
Far and away the best thin crust Pizza that I have ever had in my entire life.
The crust is crisp, yet still a little bit buttery and flaky and so tasty!
Given how smokey this place is - I would never dine-in here. So I can't give it 5 stars. I smoked cigarettes for ten years - so I understand smoking - and I am usually pretty tolerant - but the dining room here is just vile. When I've gone in to pick up my pizza - I could SEE the air - and felt like I needed a shower after spendin three minutes inside.
Like some other yelpers, I too most question the grounds for all of the raving reviews.
The one and hopefully only time I went to Zaffiro's the place was moderately busy but as smoky as a Marlborough testing facility and sat at a table for ten minutes with three friends before growing tired of watching the haggard waitresses chain-smoke and play video poker instead of offering to wait on us and then we left.
Maybe had I actually eaten the supposedly *legendary* pizza it would have somehow overcome the inept wait staff but since I do not have a nicotine addiction that requires my pizza to be coated with cancer causing second-hand smoke I doubt it.
I went here for a business lunch a few months ago, and while I wasn't that impressed with the lasagna, I kept hearing good things about the pizza. My boyfriend and I split a veggie/pepperoni pizza tonight, and it was great. Super super thin crust and lots of toppings. Service was fast and friendly. :)
The cheese bread appetizer wasn't so great, and we didn't get any water, which would have been nice before the sodas came out. But all in all, I'm glad we tried someplace new, and the next time we get a thin crust pizza craving, we'll definitely keep Zaffiro's in mind.
Oh, and no soda refills? That's kind of lame....
Really fucking good, no fucking around, Southeast Wisconsin thin-crust, cornmeal -kissed, lightly sauced pizza. If you want pineapple on your pizza, you should not be calling that pastry "pizza." Yes, "two meats" --- sausage and m-f-ing pepperoni! I've had bacon on pizza before, I'm not autistic, but this place (and most legendary pizza joints in this region) don't gimmick it up with fad toppings. They rely on good hot ovens, secret-recipe sweetish sauce, non-nonsense delivery, and delicious consistency to carry on local traditions.
I realize pizza has many, many variations across our country & the globe, and it seems the variety you were first introduced to becomes the gold standard, even for people with "evolved palates" or "traveled tongues." But, damn, for Milwaukee, Zaffiro's is the damn goodest pizza in town. I'd bet on Wells Bros. in Racine, though, if there was like a World Series of Pizza or some shit.
Edit: Calling in for a carryout SUCKS. The lady who usually answers the phone is very, very annoyed that you called, will mock you if you ask a normal question, and condescendingly call you "hon" at least twice. Ick. And when (twice this has happened now) I went to pick up my pizza, it takes forever to get someone's attention unless you also order a beer at the bar. I could see my pizza wrapped, getting cold, on a shelf in the kitchen both times, until I inquired 3 times.
Not sure what the big deal is. The pizza is mediocre, the service is mediocre, the wine/beer selection is mediocre, and the atmosphere is mediocre. The giant salad is really good, but it is fairly pricey. The place gets really crowded and the bar area can get smokey.
Some of my friends absolutely swear by this place and would probably kill me for saying that Zaffiro's is only mediocre. I've eaten here 10+ times and I still don't get it. Maybe it's like Vegimite- you have to grow up eating it to love it.
Zaffiro's is a place that looks like it has been around forever. Small inside, it is one of those places that continues to thrive because it offers a great product, a nice atmosphere, at an inexpensive price. However, be warned, it is definitely a casual/bar/old-style-restaurant atmosphere.
The specialty here is, without a doubt, their fantastic pizza. A cracker-thin crust loaded with quality toppings makes for a very enjoyable lunch experience. As with nearly anyplace on the east side, parking is a pain, but I do suggest that it is worth a try. Might be a bit hesitant to take a larger group.
Great food and great service. Will definitely go back.
Best pizza in Milwaukee by a mile.
Years ago, I ordered the ''lunch special'' and I became ticked off due to the skimpy toppings and canned mushrooms, so I never went back. Prior to that experience, I had been there several times and was rather pleased. Recently, I recieved a coupon in the mail for the grand opening at the new Mequon location and the pizza was excellent!
I thought this place was good. It seemed like typical thin crust pizza to me. Service was a little weird when I walked in, wasn't really sure who to talk to. Not to hate on anyone, but I think it's really the atmosphere that might make this place cool...pizza is definitely good but I don't know if I'd say its too special. I definitely would prefer Pizza Man compared to this place.
Good good GOOD pizza.
I stumbled in a little tipsy one rainy night with the boyfriend. We were asked to wait a few minutes and chatted with the woman who took our names. About 2 minutes later we were sat in the full dining room.
It took a while for our server to come by but the bar/dining room were busy. Good on refilling our beers and the pizza came out quickly. Overall a great experience, pizza was amazing.
Oh god...(wipes a tear)...Used to live by this place. Still dream of this pizza. I can't really compare it to Chicago pizza since it's so different (plus it would devolve into a Giordano's vs. Malnati's vs. Gino's thing), but I can easily say that it is the best non-deep dish out there. In the world. Including anywhere in New York, yeah you wanna make something of it? People can argue with me all they want, but until they actually come and taste this crust, their arguement just has no foundation...Plus, you can get a large pepperoni for what I just paid for a grilled cheese sandwich and large coffee in Ann Arbor....
Can't wait to visit again!
If you like thin crust pizza Zaffiro's is the place to go. Cracker thin crust pizza that is oh so good. Zaffiro's is a traditional pizza joint, with straight forward traditional pizza toppings. You want pineapple I suggest you keep moving that is not what this place is about. Generous with the cheese and the perfect amount of sauce. I highly suggest getting cheese with pepperoncinis and fresh tomatoes! Oh yeah, that's what I call a lip smacker.
This is how cracker thin pizza should taste. This is how the crust should snap. GREAT stuff! Wife and I thoroughly ejoyed their pepperocini, sausage and pepperoni pizza.
If this is one the best that Milwaukee can do, we are all in trouble.
I hope that this joint gets high marks from anyone because of the nostalgia factor. It comes across as old and dirty and not somewhere I'd like to venture to again.
There are few things in life I regret but I regret living in Milwaukee almost 12 years ago and never discovering this place. Sweet Jesus, this is PHENOMENAL pizza. The crust is cracker thin. The cheese is tasty. But the sauce--oh that sauce. It is probably the best sauce I have ever tasted on a pizza. But make sure you ask for extra sauce to get the full effect. Zarffiro's is more of a dive bar than a restaurant but they have a small dining room off to the side. I highly recommend eating the pizza at the bar after popping a few bills in the jukebox. (Forego the sterile dining room). Their garlic bread is awesome, too. True texas toast garlic bread that is powerfully garlic. I will definitely go back.
Folks this is the best pizza in the world...that coming from someone born and raised in Chicago. If you like the super thin cracker crispy type of pie, cut Chicago tavern style (squares) then this is the place. Seriously I drive here every now and then from Chicago just to eat the pie and then drive home...with two in the back for the fridge. Y'all brewer fans better hope big CC doesnt find this place and eat his way out of baseball
What can I say . . . Zaffiro's is my favorite pizza. Their trademark is the thinnest, crispiest crust on the planet. Sausage great, cheeze, pepperoni, it's all great. Garlic bread, salads, yum.
I recently moved from So. Calf to Milw. No way to get a pizza like this in Calf. If fact that's why I moved, for the pizza! Zaffiro's has made the move worth it.
My favorite pizza on planet Earth. Their cracker like thin crust approaches the platonic form. I always get the veggie and sub in jalapeno peppers for green peppers. When I go home for a visit, this place always gives me that authentic Milwaukee feeling -- which is sadly dying with the newfangled yuppy-style places taking over the East Side *cough* Twisted Fork *cough*. I couldn't love this place more.
This is a great little Milwaukee spot. Great crispy pizza with very fresh-tasting ingredients, fantastic prices, especially for the East side and a very relaxing low-key dining room. Definitely a great place for a tasty, casual lunch with friends.
Damn good crispy pizza served in a casual atmosphere. Not for snobs.
The family and I started going here after Brewer's games (drove in from Madison). After having been here several times, now that we live in Milwaukee, I have to the the combination of the old school atmosphere and the awesome thin crust pizza make this one of my favorite places period, not just in Milwaukee. To get the best experience, make sure to sit at the bar.
Milwaukee has a lot of good pizza places. This is one for sure. Belly up to the bar with a friend and share a thin crust pizza
This is the new date place for my wife and me. The pizza and beer are great and the food is cheap. Love it!
the jews eat unleavened bread during passover to commemorate being in the desert and not having yeast, not because it tastes good. what's zaffiro's excuse for making pizza on it?
I used to like Zaffiro's, until one day I ordered the ''lunch special'' Between the canned mushrooms and skimpy toppings, I decided to never go back. Restaurants are like that though, they'll skimp to save money, make the customer mad, then lose all that repeat business!
At the pinnacle of the East Side where Brady meets Farwell, is this shanty of a pizza place. But don't let the outside looks fool you like they fooled me for too many of my college years. In fact when I first moved to Milwaukee and saw the place, I didn't realize that it was more than a pub. Add a little bit of Milwaukee South Side charm and a small room full of checkered tablecloths tucked neatly alongside the bar room, and you have Zaffiro's. To date, this place serves the most amazing and delicious thin-crust cheese and sausage pizza. The crust, paper thin and cooked to a crisp crumbles off in flakes in your mouth. The pizza speaks for itself, but may not be enough to feed a starving group of three or four people. Definitely add an order of garlic bread or better yet -- stuffed mushrooms to your order. Complement the taste with a cold brew from the bar and you have yourself one of the best pizza places in a city that has a surprising number of great thin crust.
Great thin crust pizza. Avoid any carry-out appetizers--they're cold and cruddy.
