Great fries, dogs, beers, jello shots, and atmosphere! I love hanging out here, the employees are awesome and Zach is the man. Great jukebox, trivia on Wednesday nights, and a great back patio to hang out and play ping pong. The cheddar jalapeno fries are awesome and I love Zach's favorite dog. They have beef dogs and sausages and also have turkey dogs. You can get any of the same fixings on any type of dog.
Vegetarians, don't you worry, I don't eat beef either. They have tofu AND awesome apple sage veggie sausages, plus veggie chili that meat eaters often get too! What more could you want at 2:30 AM?! A bar that's open past 2 and serves exactly what I want after some drinks, yeah! -

This Halloween weekend has obliterated my previously conceived notions of what a hangover could be. It is a delicious pain....delicious for the especially fun memories of the past few days, but painful in every other aspect, concentrating in the liver and brain regions.
And all I want...
...is a freaking hot dog from this place. I have a sneaking suspicion their meat tubes will revive what has died.
Their dogs are great. I've had many of their varieties, so I don't freaking know which one could be "da best".
I like to go there in the afternoon after I take the dog to the dog park in Mt. Tabor. The dog don't get no dogs, though. They are all for meeeeeeeee. -

One of the best hot dog's I've had. It had the awesome snap that they promote on the menu and no matter what your craving they have the topping to handle it. The chili cheese fries are pretty darn good too! You got to love crispy fries covered in oozing chili cheese.
Also, if you love Ms.Pacman, they have a tabletop version! -

I love this place! My cousin and I go about once a month and it's just a really laid back cool place to have a good hot dog and chill. If you're looking for fast service or chatty staff this is not the place. They are friendly and laid back, not chatty. I will continue to frequent this place as long as Zach is the owner!

pros: fantastic dogs, rotating beer on tap, awesome chilli fries. and the wait staff is some of the kindest and fantastic people in food service. before your beers (or other drink) is gone they're asking if you would like another.
as for the dogs get anyone they have it will be fantastic.
and super strong mixed drinks.
cons: if in a group of 6 or more seating can be kinda tight but you can eat outside if in you wanna bare the cold.
all in all: try this place dont pass it buy go in for lunch get a dog and fries and a pbr for 6$ you cant beat that. also for 1$more you can upgrade your dog to a cheese filled, and a red hot, and linguesa. -

Great hotdogs prepared with uniqye ingridenta. Zach's Shack is an excellent local hot dog stop. These hot dogs have a catch with every bite. There are many ways to order how you want your hot dog. You can order one of the specialty hot dogs that include certain toppings or you can simply customize your own. Enjoy a hot dog and beer with the ball park chaos.

I love hot dogs and I love eating at Zach's.
Fries not to greasy, and the best dogs I have had since I left Chicago. -
Review from Jenni L.
You know that scene in Legally Blonde II where Jennifer Coolidge's character Paulette give the famous line "You look like the 4th of July! Makes me want a hot dog REAL bad!"
Ya, I know that you know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't even pretend you haven't seen that travesty of a movie.
Either way, this is exactly what all of my friends and I say when we are in need of a hot dog. It also so happened that it was the 3rd of July, so it was pretty fitting.
Zach's Shack fit the bill. It was blasphemously hot outside and it was nice and cool at Zach's, so we sidled up to the bar and ordered drinks and hot dogs for lunch. My friend opted for a chili cheese dog, which looked pretty good, and I got the Scorpion dog which was loaded with brown mustard and sauerkraut, holla!. We shared an order of fries which turned out to be so big we couldn't even make it halfway through between the two of us. The hot dogs were pretty perfect. Obviously they might be slightly better had they been grilled, but come on, it's a hot dog, I'm going to be happy either way.
I can see alot of visits to Zach's this summer. He makes a mean weiner. -
Review from Patti F.
The menu is really good for a late, LATE (read: post liver destroying evening) nosh. Open until 3 a.m. - last call 2:30 a.m....this is important for those not quite ready to end the evening.
Yeah, I know - why read a review from a veg, they don't eat hot dogs right? SOooooo, Zach's actually serves any of their dogs veggie! WOO HOO! Lots of choices, lots of variety - and of course, it includes other stuffs.
Obviously known for hot dogs, Zach's offers other nosh (of the fried variety, because seriously who doesn't love fried?) - such as fries (I gets mine with cheese & jalapenos), jalapeno poppers, etc.
Oh, and if you haven't completely obliterated your liver, Zach's also serves beer, wine, and yes - alcohol with the mixin's. -

Portland, OR
Growing up, i watched a lot of bad prime-time TV.. Its true, we cant escape the fact that it warped me somewhat.. Too many episodes of Cheers left me thinking that everyone should have a bar where they get their name yelled out when they enter! Actually i still think this..
While i don't exactly have that myself, the closest place i DO have is the Zach's Shack.
I remember a late night of drinking, what can only be may years ago, stumbling out of the space room with some friends, one of whom was celebrating her 21st that night, and had imbibed Waaaaayy to many free birthday drinks.. The bartender had "suggested" that we get her out of their bar, and get some food in her stomach, right away. "there's some new cart, or whatever down the street, i think they have hot dogs.."
Now, i cant remember what i had for lunch yesterday, but those words, have stuck with me like Uncle Ben telling Spider man about great responsibility or whatever.. Because the next stop was that "cart or whatever" and its magic fruit that changed my life..
I ate hot dogs as a kid, I'm sure everyone did.. but that night, after we Slumped my drunk friend down in a lawn chair on the sidewalk (no, I have no idea where it came from) and this guy sticks his head down out of the window like the gate to the city of OZ- "what'll ya have?", life has gone downhill (or sky high, depending on how you look at it) from there.
I'm sure i ate 3 dogs that night, maybe more.. and i kept coming back.
The dogs are all the "natural" kind, with the casing that "Snaps", though they have turkey and tofu or veggie dogs as well. Long since removed from the tiny cart, into a much more proper location, allowing more freedom to have beer, and later liquor, and an expanded menu.
I've had at least one of everything on the regular menu (at the ribbing of the owner who saw me eat the same dog every time for 2 years) and while there are things I just don't care for, there isn't anything BAD on the menu.. Highlights are the New York dog, a kissing cousin of the coney, with onions, chili and cheese, and the Los Lobos, with salsa, sour cream, cheese, peppers and olives.. Although there are PLENTY of ways to make your own dog, (mine is Cream cheese, Siracha and Onions..)..
If you aren't into the whole "Snap Dog" thing, they have 2 or 3 sausages on the menu most of the time, so you can snaz it up there if you like.. locally made Zenner's sausages mostly, all tasty and good quality. They have fries and a few sides, Poppers, Mozza sticks.. realyl though, its the dogs.
On tap, Zach has sodas and a few beers with many more in bottle or can, and a limited selection of the hard stuff as well.. OF COURSE jell-o Shots go with a Sgt. Peppers Dog!
They have service early, and kids are allowed until 9 or 10 as long as they don't sit at the bar.. I've taken my Niece and Nephew in for dogs and never feel like I'm taking them to "A Bar". When the weather is nice, there's ping-pong in back and seating on the patio, which is a fine way to spend a summer afternoon with a pint and a Chicago Dog..
To this day, it's my favorite restaurant in town.. Even if it did start as "Some cart, or whatever" -

I've definitely had better hot dogs and after the rave reviews I had heard, my hopes were way too high. Totally common fixings available and the dog itself was kind of rubbery, so it was a let down. The bun was dry and way too floury tasting.
The guy making the dogs and taking orders was nice enough, didn't have that Portland attitude so that was a plus. Our food was made quickly as well. But his charm isn't going to talk me into another one of their hot dogs.
Won't be back. -

This review based solely on the enjoyment I experienced here - I didn't have anything to eat.
June 3rd (Friday) 2011: I and two friends had just come off the volcano and were making our way back to the west side of the river when the leader suggested we stop in for a drink. This was about 2:00pm, so the place was empty. One person in our party got a Mimosa, which she praised the quality of the OJ used, another person got a Newcastle, and I grabbed a Hornsby's with a side of ice.
We sat outside in a private patio out in the sun and just collectively exhaled for a few and soaked up that fuckin' righteous vitamin D. While smartphone usage was at hand at our table, I started watching the ping-pong matches that were going on between regulars (employees, owners?) All three of us were soon enamored and occasionally compelled to voice a "woah!" and "niceshot." Dude in the old dirty white Adidas high-tops was a pro! -

I've been very lucky to stumble upon restaurants that are having a party. This time it was the anniversary for Zach's and it was pretty awesome. Three days living in Portland and I come across a packed Zach's.
Hot dogs are awesome. Especially because they have veg dogs. A lot of different styles of hot dogs! It'd be nice to see better beer at Zach's but still decent. Love that they make jello-shots. Pretty friendly place including the patrons.
I've been back three times in three weeks. NOW that says something!Listed in: My Neighborhood

I'm not sure how Happy a happy hour is when all you're getting in terms of a discount is 50 cents off a drink. Though given that the average price of food here is in the 5 buck range, I guess you could consider it happy hour?
Then again, finding a pint of booze in Portland is like finding an actor working at a starbucks in L.A. Typically $3 gets you a pint anywhere else. So what makes this A-Oky? I guess it's the tube meat in between buns! Hot Dawg, we got a wiener!
Yes, the hot dogs here are pretty tasty. They do get creative with their combination and the atmosphere of this place was what you expect out of a total dive bar. Though you try to find me a dive bar that has Anchor Porter and Sierra Nevada on tap and a jukebox over in the side. It was pretty dive.
Their specials seem to change often. So it's a very "on the fly -however the hell I feel like making a dog today" attitude. Which can go good with those who aren't afraid of change. But if you're looking for a constant.. well, the only constant that seems to be going on is that it's meat in a bun. Which, given Portland's organic and vegan centric mindset.. is a miracle in itself.
Didn't so much care for the fries. The service was pretty average, even during the non-peak time.. Which, I guess should be better service? I'm not sure. Anyway It has it's ups and its downs. I'm sure this is the type of place that would get those who can go in for what the place is oozing, and then there's those which Portland has much more to offer them. -

The food in this little hole in the wall is absolutely delish. I've never had such an appreciation for the great American Dog. Different toppings combine to make mouth-watering hot dogs and brats. The service is fast and the servers are more than efficient. The only downside to Zach's Shack is that it is a bit of a man cave. So if you're ready to chow down on a dog without worrying about getting messy or possibly checked out, this is the place for you.

I have been a patron at Zachs Shack since it was down the street in ,well a shack. They never disappoint!
I always get the grateful dog with mayo and upgrade to a cheese filled. Generally I will add to my order whatever the special dog is, it's always an odd mix of ingrediants that end up being super yum.
Often times I find myself trying to go somewhere else for a meal and for some reason or another that option falls through. At this point I always end up at my ol tried and true standby and am never disappointed.
The staff is always awesome leaving me with a full belly and a another full stamp card.
Thanks Zach, you rule! -
Review from Andrew C.
It's a well known fact that the first hot dog is always the best. The second is "alright" and by the third you'd rather eat a roadkill sandwich than stomach another. Because of this rule, I tend to steer clear of any more than two.
I've had some AMAZING hot dogs in my time, (all of which were GRILLED you see, grilled is key.) most notably in Toronto for $1 Canadian ($.90 American at the time). They came from a street cart adorned with all the bacon bits, kraut, hot sauce and other more traditional items you could ever want. And they were a dollar. Obviously the cart keeper wasn't paying the kind of rent that Zach of Zach's Shack probably is but the point here is that the dogs just aren't that impressive at the ol'shack. The toppings maybe, the dogs, no. I know the Ball Park's in my fridge taste better and I would wager any bet that Costco's $1.50 version also has the upper hand.
It's a cool gimmick since there's obviously no Weinerschnitzel franchises within the state and even if there was, they sure as hell wouldn't serve hot dogs until 3am in Portland.
All in all though, if a business' primary marketing strategy is serving hot dogs late into the evening, they'd better be damned good hot dogs. And "damned good hot dogs" AREN'T boiled. They're GRILLED. Since Zach's comes up wayyy short in this category, it's just another business that falls victim to the confines of it's neighborhood. The quality and allure of which suggests that if you live within close proximity you'll probably go and if not, you probably won't - all without batting an eyelash.Listed in: Uno, Late Night Portland

Now I got it...
The dining experience at Zach's will be two stars more better if you substitute the regular hot dog with the Red Hot Sausage. At least for me, the sausage tasted much better than the regular hot dog and it's only $1 more.
I ordered it Sgt. Peppers style. It comes with brown mustard, jalapenos, pepperoncinis, and more and more peppers. I don't really care for mustard, but Zach's done it right. Light brown mustard and lots of peppers are the winner for me.
After I upgraded the hot dog to sausage it's only about $4.50 or so for my meal. I have to admit it, now I'm a Sgt Peppers lover. Hot, spicy, and filling just the way I like it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

New Orleans, LA
I stumbled in famished at midnight on a Tuesday wanting some comfort food from back home in Chicago. The place itself is great, and the dog wasn't bad, just a leetle pricey (by Chicago standards), and it coulda been hotter--steam those buns, ya'll!

Portland, OR
I am not a hot-diggity-dog sort of lady. I will indulge in the yearly Oktoberfest sausage, but hand me a pack of wieners and I say "No thanks!" But in the spirit of being surrounded by hot-dog-loving friends, I decided to give the congealed meat another try.
The condiments at Zach's Shack are those of legend. I was looking forward to some weird stuff, but I wasn't really struck down by any of them. I'm not the adventurous sort, and I generally like my sausages almost plain, so while a hot dog that looked more like a nacho (with cheese, sour cream, olives, salsa, and onions) isn't necessarily weird to me (I mean, c'mon, have you seen Sonoran hot dogs?), it's not something that piques my fancy. The cheese dog that I got, with cream cheese and jalapenos, was satisfying, but I'm pretty sure the dog wasn't even grilled (are any of them?). Even though it was tasty, it screamed boiled water. The fries were crispy and the poppers were supreme, though. It's true!
Prices seemed kind of steep for DOGS, and you have to pay a pretty penny for each condiment you want. Which is kind of sad, because you can get a grilled Costco dog for $1.50, or go to a stand that'll allow you all the free onions and relish you want.
The Shack has a small selection of draught beers and a few bottles, but no liquor, so don't let the bar deceive you! Also, around 7:45 p.m., there got quite a line.
When I finally worked up the nerve to actually decide that I'd down a dog, I went to the counter, the girl looked at me, said it'd be just a minute, processed another order, grabbed a rag, and walked off to clean tables on the other side of the joint. I was stranded at the counter until another worker, who I believe was on break, came up and helped me because I'd been standing there a good while. What?! I mean, how long does it take to take an order?
Later on, we actually got to watch some Discovery Channel on their TVs (a feat accomplished by the fantastic Sylvia C.), which was awesome, but as soon as 10 p.m. rolled around, the juke box was back on. While everyone was looking forward to the 10 p.m. program! I understand that you're taking orders from the higher-ups, but isn't there room for interpretation if everyone inside your shop is having a good time with the Discovery Channel? The juke box rocks, but Mike Row is better.
I mean, I liked this place, and I'll go back considering that they're open super late and are near my abode. But I won't be going for the awesome service or their great prices. -

Review from Amado L.
This one time, I found myself incredibly hungry while imbibing on some cheap-ass brews at Angelo's, and I said to myself, "My God, it's almost noon! No wonder I'm hungry!"
So, I look around me and realize that I have a variety of options-- from Mexican to Thai to Korean to American. But I didn't want to have to deal with a 'restaurant' experience. You know, that whole sitting down thing, and having a waiter, and then ordering, then sipping on my water while waiting for the order, and then the food finally comes, and I eat it, and then the waiter has to bring the check... enough! Who has time for that crap?
This is where Zach's Shack comes in. They serve hot dogs and pretty fast. You get it and go. It does the job of staving off hunger pangs while ensuring I have something completely unhealthy percolating inside my stomach. I favor the Sidney because, well, I just do. But they have a variety of versions to choose from whenever you feel like going beyond the standard dog with mustard. They also serve beer.
It's definitely a go-to kinda joint that I'm so glad is just across the street from my one of my favorite dive bars. -

I've had veggie dogs that were better than a Zach's dog. And veggie dogs are just plain wrong!!!
How this place upgraded from a shack I'll never understand. All the great toppings you say? They're just there to conceal the VERY VERY low quality dogs.

I really wanted to love this place. I have a serious weakness for the mystery meat american classic that is the hot dog. I was told when I moved to the Hawthorne area that this was a must try place. After eating there a few times now I have to say I'm disappointed.
Yes, the topping combos they suggest for their dogs are quite tasty, and fairl generous. Yes, they play good music and the service is good. But ultimately if all you're hawking are hot dogs then the quality of the dog is how you'll be measured. The hot dogs are no better than one i could get at Costco for a buck fifty, which would also be twice as big. These things are Oscar Meyer sized and kinda dry. No amount of tasty embellishment can make up for this flaw. All in all it's not bad, just terribly overrated. -

As I've covered elsewhere I like an occasional hot dog. On Hawthorne on a random Tuesday, kinda bored, kinda hungry (still), oh, look, it's that Zach's place. Come, let us find this joint out.
It's pretty cool, much more like a bar than a restaurant. A few taps, some bottles, the ever faithful PBR tall boy, and hot dogs. My order takes a while, but that's because of the cheddar fries.
Dude behind the bar's friendly, I think it was the Man His Own Self. The dude who came on at shift change was just as cool. And according to an overheard convo as of today they have Comcast, so you can watch the Blazers perform inconsistently while wolfing down some dogs. -

First off - this is a relaxed casual environment in SE PDX. If you are looking for speedy service and and pristine mall-like atmosphere...why are you even in this town? Yeesh.
So, assuming you like relaxed and casual: this place is fan-flippin-tastic. Open super-late. Very tasty dogs in all kinds of configurations for cheap prices. Crinkle-cut fries with cheese and/or chili, with veggie options for everything I've mentioned so far. Diverse juke-box, free video game nights, and ping-pong out back.
Wednesday night trivia nights made me fall in love with this place years ago. It's open for anyone to host so some nights are a bit shaky, but overall a super-fun free form of entertainment that might have you winning free dogs! -

Mmmm... hot dogs. This is a great place to go late at night after getting a beer at a nearby pub. It's not open until 3pm on the weekdays, so not a great lunch place.
Seating is limited, but I've always been able to get a table. I've always had great service, although it does take a bit for the food to be ready. There's ping pong in the back, although it's on a smoking patio, which is a drawback for me.
My favorite is the veggie dog with the veggie chili plus cheesy fries! Probably not super healthy, but very tasty. -

Not sure what is not awesome about this place. Let's see....veggie dogs? Check. Lots of toppings to pick from? Check. PBR in a can? Check. Fries made of pure yum? Check. Something good on the TV? Well, sports..not my thing, but if it is yours, check. Open late for after bar/party/raid? Check.
Yeah, that's a lot of awesome. -
Review from Johana M.
This place scores big points with me because of two things. Late night food, period. And veggie dogs additionally?! Oh my goodness.
This place is in a way, a hangover prevention measure if you're eating here after the bars late night stylie. If you're not trying to prevent one, maybe you're working on creating one? Or maybe you just want a super duper cheap meal and a beer? Five bucks will do it.
They also have cheese-filled sausage for hardcore carnivores, and loads of toppings so you can create a hotdog that is suited to meet your specific hotdog needs.
Has someone already said "hot diggity?" Well, I'm bringing it back. -

Hot dogs. Beer. Trivia Night. Happy now.
I went to Zachs for the trivia night and I go back for the dogs. The options are endless and its super cheap. Its a small space with only a few booths, other tables seat two. I haven't been in the summer but I hear that they have tables outside.
Basically, its casual, cheap and good. the Servers are nice and the patrons are funny. -
Review from Megan O.
I love coming here when I'm in Portland. They have a variety of dogs at very reasonable prices. I haven't tried many of the dogs yet because I just can't bring myself to order anything except the Chicago Dog, it's so damn good! I love slaw on my hot dogs and this one not only has that but also mustard, a pickle spear, celery salt and peppers. The balance of flavors goes down just right... meaty, salty dog then the creaminess of the slaw and zing of the mustard.
The fries just look like the Ore-Ida Crinkle Cut but they are so good. They are cooked until there is a nice crisp outer crunch. If none of the dogs on the menu look good to you, you can also build your own. They also have veggie dogs, veggie chili and the buns are vegan. Wash it down with a great beer and you should be all set. -

Hot dogs with multiple toppings
I'm a relish and general condiment fanatic, which is why I love the dogs at Zach's Shack. Where should I begin? You can build your own dog with scrumptious and not typical toppings like cream cheese, peppers, coleslaw, onions and sauces galore, to name a few. Of course you can't wash down a good dog without a cold beer, and Zach's offers several local faves on tap.
Tip: Be inventive and definitely build your own. -
Review from Jen I.
I only had the french fries, which I can honestly say were great.
I sat and watched my friends devour hot dogs, too sick to eat one.
I blame the mixture of beer, bacon doughnut, vodka and onion rings consumed earlier in the evening.
Big props to being open past 3. Zach is a hoot himself.
