I am a sucker for lunch specials, but this one stood out.  A great deal for a small salad and green curry dish.  I'm a vegetarian, so I was excited that they had two different options for the tofu (steamed or fried).  The service was pretty fast and the food was pretty tasty (with nice details, down to the cone-shaped pile of rice).

The restaurant is cozy too, and I even got a little reading done between succulent bites.

Guessing from the fellow diner who drank two glasses of wine with her lunch special, it may also be a great place to celebrate/get sauced.

Another one of those spots I've been walking by for years but have never tried. It is close to my Union Sq office and I think it got on my radar when I read about it in the TONY "cheap eats" issue a month or so ago. During a chill day at the office that included a mid day gym workout with fellow Yelper and foodiefari (lotta mercy) Brice P, we decided to hit a spot new to both of us and landed here.

Yes indeed, there are about ten $6-8 lunch specials and they weren't skimpy at all. I ordered the Kee Mow Noodle (typically called Drunken Noodles at most Thai spots I've been to) It was a spicy blend of Thai country style stir-fried flat noodles with chili paste, onion, long hot peppers, bamboo shoot, tomato, chinese broccoli and fresh basil. The basil was super fresh and it was the standout note on this dish. I went for 4/5 on the spice index and it was plenty hot. My lips were feeling the after shock for an hour after I left the restaurant. Brice got down with the red curry chicken, which wasn't as plentiful as my noodle dish, but still a nice size serving for lunch. He's a sharer too, and I had just one bite, but it was uber-coconuty and HOT. I'll def be back to give the green curry a spin.

And yes, the helpful water re-filling waitress was a cutey, but she was smiling at ME, not Brice. Get over yourself dude, shouldn't you be pumping your '1st to Review' stats of little diners and laundromats from unheard of towns upstate?

It's a good meal when you get the fat man sweat and runny nose from a bit of curry.

I went here for the $5.95 lunch special. Ordering the Red Curry Chicken, I asked the (cute) waitress about the heat options. 1-5 she said, "imagine a spoon separated into fifths." I went 4, but might go 5 next time to really get that sweat going. But, like Spinal Tap's amps going to 11, they can go beyond 5. (This white guy will stick to 4 or 5.)

The spice was excellent, the food tasty, the price terrific, and the decor--while simple--was quaint and attractive and perfectly suited for a small Thai place.

Perfect for lunch specials or a local's night out.

Is it perfect? No.
Is it better than almost all of the generic cheap Thai places throughout the city? Yeah.

I recommend the Zabb noodle.

Screw the trek out to Jackson Heights.  Fantastic, superspicy Thai can be had right here on 13th st.  And not even wauyyy east on 13th -- an easy walk to Union Square.

God, I love Manhattan.

Zabb City is my new favorite Thai place in Manhattan.

Do you love spicy cooking? Zabb delivers. Consult their five-point scale - where five is the hottest - and let your server know. We requested SIX for almost everything we ordered.

Don't worry, if you prefer food of the less-scalding variety, you can still experience a fracas of Thai flavors here, sweet flavors, tangy basil accents, you name it.

For appetizers, we shared a plate of Issan-style grilled beef ($8.95), slightly fatty, served with a rather sweet sauce (the menu states "spicy" but you can ignore them, just once) and a dangerous-looking bowl of tom yum. The soup stole the show, and was quite refreshing. It was beyond spicy, clearing my sinuses and making my face numb. Eating that soup was like eating hellfire. The good kind.

I enjoyed my pad kee mao (#49; $8.95 with pork, lunch special price is $6.95). The noodles were mouthwatering, stir-fried with chili paste, onions, hot peppers, bambooshoot, tomatoes, and basil. I had little difficulty cleaning the plate, even though my insides kept crying uncle.

Arrive early to avoid a wait. With only ten tables, Zabb is tiny.

(Thanks to Lisa Q. for introducing me to Zabb! That place is zabbulous.)

So freakin' good. This is tops in my list of Thai places. I ate here 20 minutes ago and I'm still enjoying the tantric foodgasm.

I'm betting everything here is good. I had the curry puffs -- perfect -- and the crispy calamari (cooked correctly...neither rubber nor crunchy).

The entrees are spiced 0 (go have some egg noodles with butter, you lame-o) to 5 (hottest). I had the panang curry (level 3...spicy but not too spicy). It was perfect. Shredded peppers floated in the curry like plankton in a vast sea of awesomeness.

The sauteed pork in cashew nut sauce (level 4) will make you a believer in the power of the other white meat when massaged by Zabb City's culinary genii.

The Pineapple Fried Rice (level 0) was very very very tasty. Someone had a noodle dish. I don't recall the name. It was great.

Everything is great. EVERYTHING IS GREAT.

Oh, and $18/person for 5 people. That's an epic fail...on opposite day.

GO. If it is closed in the middle of the night, break the glass with a chair and find the name of the chef and go to her house and wake her up and make her cook for you.*

*Don't actually do these things, but do go eat there.

Better than average Thai food.  After passing it about a thousand times, we stopped in one day for a late lunch.  Fresh food that tasted great, good service, fun decor.  I'd like to return during the lunch time to try the lunch specials.

This one is a solid three stars for me. I ordered food for pickup. The price was really good ($7 for a lunch that came with soup or salad). The hostess was extremely friendly and engaging

The food itself is why they lost a couple stars - The Kee Mao was slightly undercooked (the noodles were not fried long enough) and just not spicy enough. Drunken noodle is supposed to be one of those dishes that makes you pucker a bit in hot pepper - happiness. But the taste was not there. The ingredients were fresh and good i was just not happy with how the dish was prepared.

Yummy Thai food.

Look, I lived in Thailand. It's yummy. Don't question me! I know it's not as good at places in Queens but guess what? East Village is not Queens. Is it as good as Sripraphai? No. Is it good for Manhattan though? In my opinion, yes.

Order Zabb specials. It specializes in Issan after all.

They had one of the best mango & sticky rice desserts I've had in the US. I mean, it isn't that hard to nail but you'd be surprised. Even the Sripraphai one isn't that great (but that's probably because it's in the refrigerated case and you gotta do it yourself at home).

I was a little reluctant to try this place after countless dissapointing Thai meals in Manhattan, but Zabb City  suprised me. I ordered a Som Tam with seafood and a pork laab and asked for it "5" spicy (They ask you how hot you want your food on a 1-5 scale, very cute).

The food came out and it was wonderfully spicy and was what I had wanted. The som tam was nice, though lacking those dried shrimps that I like so much. The seafood on it was also a tad bland  (can we say "freezer pack"?), but not terrible. The larb was tasty though something was missing. Although merely after squeezing a requested extra lime wedge, the meal was  much better suited to my taste.

Overally my meal was *almost* right. Everything could have used another splash of fish sauce, another couple squeezes of lime. Nonetheless, Zabb city meets my expectations for a half decent Thai meal, to the extent that I won't mind coming here to fulfill a Thai food craving (instead of stifling it until I make it out to Queens.).

I went to Zabb City a second time, two days after the above meal and ordered a take-out yum woon sen. The dishes on the menu are renamed in English, which makes picking out specific dishes a little confusing, but the waitress was very helpful. The dish wasn't nearly as spicy as my first meal there and again the seafood was a bit bland. After bringing it home I doctored it up by throwing in more fish sauce, adding a few bird chilies and some lime juice and the dish was just fine.

The atmosphere is cute, dark and cozy. The food is as non pretentious as the atmosphere and the waitresses are very sweet. Zabb is certainly not close to what I'd consider the best Thai food in the 5 boro's,  but Zabb gets 3 stars for serving acceptable and even decent food in a sea of outright horrible Thai restaurants in Manhattan.

I fully intended to give this place a 5 star rating until today when I got take out and ordered the pad Thai level 5 spicy and they gave me level 1.

What do I look like, someone who can't take the heat? I love all things spicy; anything that will make me cry and beg for something cold to drink. I was disappointed.

Regardless, the pad Thai was decent, nothing special. Whats REALLY good is the cashew stir fry on the lunch special with the salad. That burned my taste buds and left me full (almost a little too full). Next time I go I want to try one of the salads which have interesting fruit pairings like mango and sweet apples.

Actually, I'm involved in a fiery love affair with this place.
Zabb City has also redefined 'spicy' for me.

True story:
One day, my roommate, also a lover of spice, came home raving about Zabb. She claimed that it was delicious, but I was most intrigued by her details of their additional levels of spice. To bring honor to my Korean ancestors, I joined her on a Zabb dinner outing and attempted to order the Zabb noodles at the highest level of spice--level five. However, my roommate and the waitress wussed me into ordering at a level four.

The dish was absolutely delicious and also ridiculously, ridiculously spicy.

With tear-glazed eyes, I asked the cute waitress, "How do you eat level five Thai spicy?"
Her simple, deadpan response: "I was born with it."

Needless to say, this Korean was put to shame.

For those with more sensitive taste buds, never fear. You can ask them to tone your dishes down to mild, and they are still scrumptious. As my spice-resistant friend once said about the Cashew Nut sauce: "I want to fucking bathe in this."

Personal favorite? My first ever dish--the Zabb noodles, your choice of noodles in a spicy and tangy tom yum soup.

Don't be fooled.  The one in Jackson Heights is so much better.  But for Manhattan, I don't think it can be beat.  Catfish is good.  But Sripraphai and Chao Thai (to a lesser extent) are pretty accessible on the LIRR, so I guess I can't see the point.  Unless you're trying to grab a crucial skateboarding sesh at U Square.

The music should be shut off and thrown away and dumped in the river and then the river should be drained and the music should be burned.  Thai restaurateurs labor under the peculiar delusion that diners want nothing more to be anesthetized by insipid trance music.

Scrumptious Thai!  Truly Authentic!  Wonderful service!  I really love this place.  The first time I stepped in, I was at the laundromat next door and was trying to kill an hour so decided to sit down for lunch.  Ordered green curry and blew past my text message limit telling people about this great restaurant.  I don't know where to start... the curries are amazing, duck is soooo scrumptious, and the noodles are done just right.  The food has heat but seriously tasty - and they are usually receptive if you ask them to go light on the spice.

Never had a disappointing meal here... I totally relived my travels to Thailand here... and it was soooo good.

Zabb City is eerily well decorated for a Thai restaurant -- tin ceilings, wood panelling, matching fancy-looking dark wood tables.  (Normally this would completely throw me off, so I'm thankful for the incongruous and hideous light-up moving ocean scene on the back wall, otherwise I don't think I could trust the place.)

Zabb City's curries are among the better curries in the neighborhood -- super spicy and rich with fresh-tasting vegetables, and the jasmine rice served in a fancy cone, but their noodle dishes tend to be seriously lacking (tend to be a bit overcooked/soggy, a bit oily, and not as flavorful as I usually like.)  Their specials and appetizers are delicious (I highly recc' the fresh rolls, and the wider-than-usual variety of interesting salads also makes me happy) and the service is polite and attentive, making this a great place to go if you're in the mood to go out to dinner at a fairly inexpensive, fairly tasty restaurant with surprisingly nice and relaxed atmosphere, but if you're just in the mood for some delicious takeout pad thai, you're probably better off heading somewhere else.

Thanks to the stellar reviews of two burning hot women...Mel, aka 'Poppa Large' and Lisa Q, on All Hallow's Eve, I finally found what I have been searching for ... HEAT!

At  Zabb City You are given the choice from a level 1-5. Our friendly, helpful waitress suggested we start with #3. Just like Mel said .."it was on fire!" Child, my mouth was hotter than Georgia asphalt..make sure to request extra napkins and  plenty of water.

It helped that mellowing Zero seven and Blue Six was playing as I tortured my tonsils and taste buds. It felt as though I had just completed a 5 k by the time it was deep inside my belly.  As per Mel's recommendation..we ordered the coconut sticky rice and mango for dessert, which cooled the palate.  It was off the radar.

The solo waitress was on point. The music, atmosphere and other heat hos were not offensive.  I was in heavenly hell.  I would not advocate this joint for a first date; you may be throwing flames from both ends and sweating hot chili peppers and garlic for weeks. So worth it!  Looking forward to subjecting myself to other items on the tasty menu at a level 4-5.

Lunch specials from $6.95- $8.95. Tempting prices and our waitress said it is never too crowded for lunch. However, I advise you think it over if you are a pepper head novice who must get back to the office.

Amidst the Spices of the world spring this authentic thai restaurant that specializes in Northeastern Thai cuisine. Try any salads - ask for "5" star spicy if you are brave - with sticky rice. Mango with sticky rice comes with coconut milk creme - pretty hard to find in manhattan.

Overall, the best Thai restaurant BY FAR in manhattan.

I became hooked on this place first as a lunch spot. Their lunch special is close to 7 dollars per person (includes a very comprehensive salad or clear chicken soup). Usually the highest amount I would pay for any techno thai restaurant.

Zabb City doesn't shy away from the stereotypical rave music played at every Thai restaurant but it does differ in it's more down to earth decor. The dark wood tables are set with simple and colorful wovenish mats. The walls are bare except for a couple of Thai masks and (my delicious memory is a wee blurry on decor)  a bamboo collage of some kind near the entrance. The first thing I ever ordered with the pad thai and I got it  LEVEL 5 THAI SPICY. Now noodles carry a lot of fuqqin' surface area and that dish burned me to the core. I love spicy and was put to shame. I had to take most of it home and waited for it get cold so that I could eat it. Even then it took me a good 45 minutes to finish my leftovers with a head full of sweat.

This place is a great bang for you buck. Any of the stir-fries or noodles come HUGE at dinnertime. I recommend level 3 thai spicy. FUCK IT HAVE A SPICE OFF WITH A FRIEND!

Just get the delicious cashew nut sauce stir fry. Mmmmmmmmm. The cashew nut sauce is rich and deep with aromas of oyster, tart anchovy, and sweet, sweet Thai goodness. I am also a big fan of the Zabb Noodles, which I would definitely not share with anyone no matter how big a portion they give me. The soup is so flavorful with the right mix of sour, salty, sweet, and spicy that it's addictive. Zingy, zippy, zelicious Zabb City, I love you.

Nice atmosphere, good food, very quaint. Its a small restaurant, couldn't have been more than 10-15 tables but you go for what it can offer. Its perfect for an intimate outing with friends or a casual date. The smaller size also proves you won't have any trouble getting attention from the staff. Food was scrumptious.

I went here for their lunch special. The salad with peanut sauce dressing was really good. The dressing was possibly the best peanut sauce dressing I've ever had. The salad had a lot of bean sprouts, which is a plus for me. I had the red curry with tofu, and it was good. It wasn't the best red curry, but it was very acceptable. The lunch special is definitely worth it ($7).

I don't even know what to say... this place is fantastic. The best thai I have had in NYC (Khao Sarn in WB close your ears- sorry)!

Catfish in chili sauce... made me queasy when my friend ordered it. But umm, it is now my fave dish. SO good and tangy. I also had the veg duck pineapple rice (my signature dish) - the best mock duck I have had.  Anywhere. What else did we have... oh curry duck (real) - spicy and delicious.  Fish cake appetizer - my mouth is watering as I type. Curry puff- rumbles my tummy.

I know I sound like I own the place or something but it was THAT good. If you love thai, you must try this place.... immeeds. Oh one more thing, when we turned up (a Monday) they were closed, but since the owner was there and her cooks were doing a special catering job, she let us in anyway! How awesome. Love this place.

So, New York Yelpers, I should have listened to you.

My friend and fellow Yelper was dubious of this place (apparently a bastard cousin to an amazing joint in Queens) because many New York Yelpers despise it. I said let's give it a shot and then you can decide for yourself.

This proves that I should ALWAYS listen to my Yelp peeps. Especially the highly-refined, extremely-opinionated New York variety.

Bad Thai food...really bad. The Pad Thai was not even really what I consider Pad Thai. The flavors just weren't there. The faux duck dish my friend had was spicy. That's it...just spicy.

Thumbs down...way down.

Zabb is spectacular - and if you don't think so, then you should just stick to your shopping mall pad thai variety of food.  It's funny, if you've never been to Thailand, then you really only know American-Thai food.  Duh, and if you're of that pond of fish, you won't like Zabb.

Things that I love about Zabb:  it really is Thai spicy.  I used to get the 4 stars of spiciness but I always end up a little uncomfortable, but a 3 star is perfect.  I can enjoy the taste of all the ingredients in the entrees.  As for things to order, well - Thais are known for their pork prep, so I'd say order the Cashew Nuts Sauce with Pork.  Totally fantastic!  If you're masochistic like me, go ahead and get the 4 but also order the coconut juice.  Perfect pairing.

Also try the Issan Grilled Beef.

I've tried the Woodside location - I think they tone down the hot factor for American audiences.  So, I feel the need to defend Zabb City a bit - one of the previous reviews said that the pad thai wasn't so great...
well, the way pad thai is made in America isn't how pad thai is made at all.  Think more of an omelet with some noodles in it - then you got real pad thai!

Go, you will love Zabb!  Owner is fantastic too!

"We have five levels of spicy."

"What's the hottest?"

"That's Thai Spicy...very hot."

"Ah! Ok, I'll do that."

*Shakes head* "Are you sure you don't want less spicy? 3 or 4 maybe?"

"Nah I'm sure-let's go all the way."

"Ok...you'll see!"

And so the conversation between myself and the waitress went one rainy night, a night in which it was proved to me that I should never underestimate "Thai Spicy," just because a bunch of other restaurants decide to tone it down for my American palate.

I ordered the seafood and green mango salad which consisted of surprisingly tender scallops, very good shrimp, but unfortunately chewy squid. No matter, the mango was very delicious as were the other subtle flavors present...that is, until I got a Thai punch in the face from the chiles added.

My mouth was on fire, so my friend and I ordered sticky rice and desperately tore at the lettuce cup underneath to sooth our blistering mouths; never before had I had something so supremely, painfully spicy. And yet, I was so impressed that I kept eating, sweating all the way.

Thankfully, the pork larb salad, which we had asked to be equally as hot, wasn't as terribly searing, probably due to less chile seeds (the culprits) in the mix. It was especially delicious, at least for a first time trying the well known salad.

As our shared entree, which I finished in spite of my ripping gut, we had kee mao noodles at level #4 in spiciness; still tastebud-damaging but delicious. Decked out with plentiful cubes of tofu and vegetables, I would definitely get it again (but perhaps at level #3 next time).

Our waitress was kind enough to warn us, and even kinder to give us a full pitcher of water so we could cool our mouths as necessary.

This seems like a really cute neighborhood place, as a few employees from neighboring stores stopped in just to chat. I have yet to try the one in Queens, which is I'm sure even crazier, but for now I give this place the veritable thumbs up.

My hun and I met up for dinner with a gal pal here last night. Her co-worker recommended Zabb City as being the "best" Thai restaurant in NYC and so having never been before, we agreed to try it out.

It's a small place with the decor being simple and straight forward. It seems to be a "mom & pop" type of place that is homey and comfy. In place for the lack of A/C was a rotating fan that blew directly at our table which was a bit annoying.

The service albeit friendly was rather slow because there was only one young lady at the front of the house. We ordered the following items:

Green Curry Fried Rice w/chicken- really BLAND
Pad Seu Eew with Veggies & Tofu- tasty and not greasy which is good
Cha-Cha Glass Noodles with Veggies & Tofu- also very tasty
Seafood Papaya Salad- VERY SPICY without being warned with warm Scallops, Shrimp and Squid; we really liked it

Dessert: Sticky rice and mango- YUM!

Overall, it was just as good as many other Thai restaurants I've been to. The portions are BIG but the price is a bit higher than a lot of other Thai places I've eaten at with the food just as good.

Zabb City is one of my tried and true restaurants for delivery or pick up.  Their food is consistently delicious and fresh.  Their Kee Mow Noodles are excellent, as are the basil and garlic sautee dishes.  My boyfriend loves the Pad Prik Khing.

BEWARE! When they say spicy, they mean business.  Pad Prik Khing with 1 star is ridiculously spicy, even for a person who can tolerate heavy spice.

The only reason this place gets 4 stars ...when the food deserves 5... is the atmosphere.  It's usually really empty in the restaurant, which can be a bit uncomfortable.

But go! You won't be sorry, the food is quite delicious.

A Thai export from Queens, Zabb City has restored my faith in finding a cheap, solid Thai lunch option other than standby Spice in the East/Greenwich Village area (eh to Klong, Cafetasia, and East Village Thai).

They have 12 lunch specials @ $6.95 w/ Chicken/Beef/Pork/Veg & Tofu and $8.95 w/ Shrimp or Squid.  They come with a soup or a nice salad accompanied w/ a peanut-based dressing.

The Kee Mow Noodle with Pork is very good.  The wide noodles are fantastic - ridiculously soft - and the slices of pork are well-portioned and good quality.  A nice amount of stir-fried vegetables are mixed in as well.  The basil/chili spicing is well-balanced between heat and flavor.  Great dish.

The Basil Sauce w/ Beef is solid as well.  Similar Basil/Chili spicing  to the Kee Mow Noodle but the chewiness of the noodle is inadequately replaced by white rice.  The beef was good.  Ok execution but  I'd be hard pressed to order this again over the Kee Mow.

The Thai iced tea ($3) is good.

The place has been empty on the two afternoons I've picked up my order but the decor/atmosphere has its simple charm.   I'd say it makes for a more stress-free lunch option than the trendier Spice and it feels less out of place as a lunch spot as Klong.

Will be coming back...

Wow, amazing Thai food.  I had ginger tea, papaya salad, green curry with tofu and vegetables and the mango with sticky rice, all was excellent.  Service was quick on the food, but slowed down after that in a good way, it was relaxed and they weren't rushing you out the door so you could actually enjoy your dinner company.  But that said, they were still attentive and refilled the water when necessary.  I'd tell everyone to go here!

I went here on a recent night and enjoyed my fresh rolls and tofu pad thai. The food is reasonbly priced ($8-9?) and compares with other thai places in the neighborhood, if not better. In fact, I'm surprised this place isn't more crowded, although it is off the beaten path a little bit. Although it wasn't empty when I went, as per the other reviewer's experience, there were only a few tables filled. It was a quiet, pleasant dining experience and the service was good.
As far as I know, It is owned by the same folks who own the Zabb City in Jackson Heights.

My  initial experience with Zabb City was not so hot.  I ordered Pad Si Eiew and found it to be very peppery (as in black pepper), and not much else.  After a couple of months of avoiding it, I've started going back, and I think that first batch of noodles was very much an anomaly.  It's not going to change your world or anything, but it's a good Thai place in a town with a zillion same-same places.  The staff are always very friendly, and the delivery is fast and reliable.

They have a nice $6.95 lunch special that comes with soup or salad.  Don't be afraid of the noodles, but stay away from the "Zabb Curry" (blech).  5-star spicy means Thai spicy, not farang spicy.

I must have ordered wrong. I ordered the Massaman curry that both my brothers swear by and it was not good at all. It was just chunks of tofu and a couple potatoes. The sauce tasted good though so maybe it would be better with just vegetables. Although now that I think about it I had the pad thai before I did not like it that much either,

I think this place is sort of misunderstood b/c it serves Isaan food, which is northeastern thai food, im not a thai expert, but i stuck to some of the dishes i understood were their specialty.  I find some of their "typical thai dishes" (or at least what most americans consider typical thai) like curries etc are decent, but really no better than the avg thai place.  However, the Isaan dishes and a couple other dishes are outstanding.  I probably eat here twice a month

So the Isaan dishes i get:
- pork laab - this is a ground pork salad type of thing, its ground pork, diced red onion, diced green chilis and i believe its seasoned with lime juice and some other stuff
- papaya salad - sliced papaya that i believe has been lightly pickled, some half slices of tomatoes and peanuts...very good and goes extremely well with the pork laab
- sticky rice - goes well with the pork laab and papaya salad

aside from those dishes:
- duck and apple salad: this is great, its cripsy chucks of duck with the skin on mixed with apple...sounds a bit odd, but trust me its awesome
- calamari - just fried calamari with a sweet chili sauce, but really very good

i really like this place as long as you order the right dishes

Zabb is cutely done in a rustic rather than ultra modern decor that most Thai places seem to be. Located, right around the Irving place area, it definitely fits the neighborhood. Drinks are reasonable priced and good. I had the Isaan sausage which was good and the spicy basil chicken fried rice. They were out of beef, my first option. Food was good but spicy. Really, beware. This isn't your run of the mill Thai spicy, the food, deceivingly looked not spicy.......a tiny spoon of chili sauce later, I had to drink a gallon of water to recooperate. I would definitely recommend this place.

This restaurant is affiliated with the Zabb Thai in Queens.  I have been there several times and find the food to be delicious (usually order the Cashew Nut or the Ginger Sauce dishes) and reasonably priced.  The only thing is... why is it always empty?  Maybe it's the location and the lack of sufficient signs?...
