There's a reason this local delicatessen is featured on television shows, New York blogs and local shopping spots alike. It's awesome.

Zabar's has been doing fine meats, cheeses, olive oils, jams, cooking supplies...really all delectable and useful good for the kitchen as long as I can remember. They are particularly well known for their smoked salmon but also have an obscene cheese selection. There is a prepared foods section which is a great stopover on the way to a Central Park picnic and I've picked up Sarabeth's jams on a number of occasions for gifts.

Unlike many charcuteries of its kind thankfully Zabars is not overpriced! It's the only place I've ever found cheap, fresh squeezed orange juice. Yeah, I mean the real fresh stuff and yeah, in the middle of the city. Only in NYC? Or should I say, only at Zabars!

What I love about this place:
    1. Low key, chill environment
    2. Old people come in, order their coffee and pastry, and just sit and watch people walk by-- it's a place definitely filled with regulars (and I'm here observing the regulars)
    3. Easy and fast service -- not too expensive either!
    4. Great soups!  Yum!
    5. Their coffee isn't diner coffee!!  This really surprised me because I was honestly expecting crappy coffee, but it wasn't bad, so I bumped this place up to 5 stars.  :)

My friend introduced me to this place, and yeah it was a bit crowded, but I would definitely go back and try other things on their menu (i.e. their sandwiches look delicious).

Let me preface this review by writing that this is not about Zabar's market but rather the small Zabar's cafe for dining. I'm guessing that most of the stellar reviews for this place are about the market. They certainly can't be for the poor excuse of a cafe or deli or whatever it is they want to call it.

All we wanted was a bagel with cream cheese, a toasted bagel with tuna fish, and a toasted corn muffin with butter. Simple enough, right?

Well it turns out that this is yet another establishment that refuses to put cream cheese on a bagel. They hand you a tiny container of cream cheese and tell you to do it yourself. Same with the tuna fish. They tell you to get a $4.00 tub of tuna fish from the fridge and do it yourself when all you need is a little bit. They also told me that they could not toast the corn muffin and that they could not put butter on it. Another do-it-yourself operation. So what is it that these people behind the counter do besides ring up customers on the cash register? Nobody is baking anything back there. I could have gotten all this stuff in their market if I knew not to expect any actual service or labor. It seems to me that you are just paying for the seating in this cafe and nothing else.

I can usually deal with mediocre service if the food is good. The bagel tasted fine despite it being cold and not fresh. The corn muffin tasted more like pound cake than a corn muffin.

It baffles me. I can't understand why people are lining up for this place like sheep. I know lots of people over 50 years old grew up on this establishment and swear by it. If one of these people ever talk to me about the ways things used to be and how things were better back then by incorporating Zabar's into the conversation--that's when I will tune them out and assume they don't know what they are talking about.

I live in the area and have never had a reason to go here because of the Fairway nearby. I knew Zabar's was a reputable establishment and read that they served up pretty good bagels so I decided to finally pop in to see what all the buzz was about. Turns out they didn't really serve up anything because most of it was self serve.

Used to love Zabar's dessert as the perfect cookie tray to end to a big gathering. But the one they delivered this weekend was a big disappointment. The brownies great, but the rest stale. Definitely meh, I've experienced better

I usually come here for when the BF and I want to grab some meat and cheese to go with our wine, but last week we ordered our Thanksgiving meal from here.

There was only going to be 4 of us total at our place but for some reason we ordered enough food for a party of 10+ ... =X.  We had their turkey, gravy, ham, stuffing, cranberry salad, asparagus w/sun dried tomatoes, roasted potatoes, and sweet yams.  All totaling to about 40+ lbs of food O_O.  Needless to say we had food for the next week or so ...

The store itself is always packed ... I mean always.  Everything here is fantastic and hasn't yet let me down.  They have everything available fresh, from fish to cheeses to meats and even sushi.  Maybe they should think about opening another location?

    Chocolate Babka.

That is all you need to know.  Go there now. Eat.  Potentially pick up some of their lox, or whitefish salad.

Maybe meet a nice Jewish boy and settle down.

I read reviews for a nice breakfast place and walked 7 blocks for prepackaged garbage that they microwaved.

They have the balls to charge $5.50 for egg and cheese and ham on an English muffin that is made in plastic wrap the day before.  You get  your premade food and bring it to the counter so they can microwave it for you!!!!

Have you ever tried to eat an English muffinin a microwave?  The same thing happens as heating up bread in the microwave... it turns to nasty pasty mush.

The store might be another review as this is just for the joke they call a deli and for breakfast.  Noting is made to order here and everything is wrapped in plastic and overpriced.  I can't believe I walked for seven blocks to eat at this after seeing the reviews.  This place sucks and I am pissed that I wasted calories on this s__thole.

When I say "Zabar's" I mean the gourmet market where you can buy all things Jewish and delicious. (A friend refers to this place as "Jewtopia!") And I love this place.

I love the olive selection - I often get a hodge-podge of olives just to snack on. They're incredibly delicious. A personal favorite is the almond stuffed green olives.

I love the cheese section - so many cheeses that I've never heard of, and all of which I can't wait to try. The people at the cheese counter are helpful and informative, once you get to them. There is often a wait... But worth it - they'll help you find a cheese that you love (as if you don't love all of them)!

I love the fish counter. Such good lox! I don't often buy from there since it's a little pricey, but when I have had their lox, it's fantastic.

I love the spreads, the whitefish salad, the blintzes - everything I've bought from Zabar's is delicious.

The one downside is that it often gets packed. So you'll be jostled a little, and you'll have to wait for little old ladies pushing carts, and you'll have to wait in line to talk to the cheese counter or the fish counter... but I really think it's worth it. Take a deep breath, smell the olives, and go. Just don't expect to be in and out in 5 minutes.

But overall, Zabar's is great. I'm in love! :)

Friendly employees, quick cashiers, and loads of goodies. I'm a fan.

I am a fan of Zabar's and it is my trustest spot for lox. Their whitefish salad is not so good, and the fish counter is hit or miss. It really depends on who is serving you. The only problem is there is so much food that you feel you need all of a sudden... and things can be a bit pricey.

I have only been here once but I have had some random dishes at some family birthday events.
Got the lox on a  bagel sandwich.
Lox was solid...albeit worse than the Brooklyn Bagel/Coffee Co (Seriously, wut)
Bagel was ok, albeit worse than BBCC above and Hot Bagels.

It is kinda overhyped. I should be there on a normal dinner night just to make sure.
    Diner so it is pricey.

When I first roamed the West Side, the first Supermarket I encountered was Zabars.  I found it charming but then I tried other markets in the Upper West Side like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Fairway, and Westside Market.

Suddenly when compared to others, this one was good but for whatever reason, I found myself trekking a few extra blocks to Fairway.  Zabars is ok, but it's not laid out as well as other markets and it's easy to get lost in here.   It seems like there were separate rennovations done at different times because the shelving and layout seems disorganized.  It also has a "cold" feel to it (the lighting and it just feels cold in here spiritually).

Maybe it was the checkstand person who was having a fun conversation with their friends as I sat their waiting to pay for my purchases and never gave me eye contact or even much acknowledgement as I paid for my stuff.

That said, it's still not a bad supermarket, I just prefer Fairways on W 74th better.  I guess you can say choosing a supermarket is a mere matter of preference like choosing wines, a favorite beer, or a favorite type of girl to date.

Zabar's is like that cute, sensitive, well groomed carnivorous Jewish Girl who went to Columbia and majored in Business with loving parents and can eat with the best of them whereas Fairway market's the outgoing, empathetic "vegan-on-Mondays-only" Italian girl who studied Law at NYU who's a great conversationalist with a nice voice and nice shoes who can salsa with the best of them or sit by the fireplace rekindling great Simon and Garfunkel songs.

Both have their strengths, both probably like to watch chick flix or Sex and the City on Sunday nights, but one just fits better than the other I suppose.

Where I'd be pretty cocky showing my Zabar's girl around, the Fairway Market girl's the one I'd marry.

This place is out of this world great. I am a sucker for cheese and this place knows how to cater. As I walked in through the zabar doors my eyes where completely glazed over as I saw the great array of cheeses. I felt like I walked through St. Peters gate and into the heavens. As I tried to compose my self and get my chin of the floor. I breathed the aromas and stuttered to ask the cheese monger, "How many cheeses do you have" . He replied, "over 900". Oh wow where do I start. He patiently suggested several with confidence providing me with delicious samples each time. Long story short I left with 7 different types and a very big "cheesy" smile on myself. Zabar's is always part of my agenda when i'm in New York. It doesn't get better than this.

I am about to commit a sacrilege...by giving my beloved Zabar's a three star rating.

I lived in NYC several years ago and came here regularly. The food was something special and everything was fresh and tasty.

Now, the store just seems tired and most foods I can find elsewhere at better prices and quality.

On a recent trip I bought prepared foods for dinner. The lemon chicken had an unpleasant flavor (odd seasonings) and the side salads were just okay.

It was Sunday and crowded as usual, but when I realized how average my food was, I resented the time lost crawling over people and standing in line.

The staff members are neither friendly nor rude...they just look overworked and bored. (when I asked for salt packets, they made me go next door to their cafe)

The one shining moment was when I discovered that they still stock my favorite cinnamon rugelach.

Don't think that I will be taking the cab ride to 80th again....may just walk down the street a bit to Trader Joes.  (Citarella was also recommended and smelled so good as I walked by.)

Nothing of the old charm left here.

This review is for their strudel only - cherry w/ cream cheese although it seemed like they had 5-10 strudel flavor options.  Nice and flaky, nice creamy cream cheese, and not overbearing cherry flavor.  It rocks.  Yum.  Traveled well from NY to CA (they pack it in a nice, fairly sturdy container).

Got the onion and potato knish (again probably around 10 varieties of knish) but haven't tried it yet.

Looking for some NYC goods to ship in care packages to my family back in California, I decided to give this place a shot based on all the yelp reviews. I went with the babka. I bought a loaf for myself, and it is delicious. I can only eat so much because it is a bit sweet, but it's hard to stop! Seems like something that would go great with coffee (which would be a great food souvenir for my dad). Would definitely come back to find other food souvenirs to take on my next visit home.

I'm from the west coast and the best way I can describe this place is a Trader Joe's on steroids.

I love this place and how disorienting it is. You walk in and you're hit with this waft of a stinky cheese aroma and it's just packed with all sorts of interesting snacks and foods. The choices can be overwhelming but mostly exciting and if you have the time, I would go and just explore for a bit cause I'm sure you'll find all sorts of new goodies you can't find easily elsewhere. I even found tea that I've only been able to purchase online for the longest time. Not everything is the best price you can find around the area but it' a great one stop shop for good eats.

This was our local grocery store for the week when we stayed in the Upper West Side.  Its a great place to get a few things to fill your refrigerator with.  They have tons specialty items here and have a great selection of fresh cheese and baked bread.   Its quite pricey but the quality is definitely there. We got our baguettes, orange juice, eggs, etc. here.  Since we were on vacation our goals was to hardly cook in but instead eat out.  We also order a large smoked white fish which can set yo back $50 but we grazed on it with the baguette for the whole week.  Its our favorite and a must for the family.  I can even have them ship some smoked fish to the rest of the family back home to enjoy.

Also for breakfast we would come down and order a butter and chocolate croissant and hot chocolate.  It was excellent.  We also tried another pastry but can't quite remember what they call it but it was delicious!

This place is also great to grab meals to go and like I said great quality for the price.  Just check it out and try a few samples.

Nova special- bagel, cream cheese, lox, and an olive.  Yes, it's served cold.  Yes, it would be great to have the bagel toasted.  But, you know what?  The sandwhich was pretty darn good.

I've been wanting to see what all hype about NYC bagels was- especially Zabar's. This place reeks of a Manhatan Institution- lots of regulars, no frills, no gimmicks- just a simple order at the counter and be on your way place.

We had just finished a run in central park and were ready to scarf down some calories.  We took the bagels back to the park and had a great picnic on one of the last nice days of the season.

While the bagel sandwhich wasn't earth shattering- it was good and I can confirm that it was a different texture and taste from the bagels I grew up with in California.  The special is $6.75 and comes with a small juice and coffee. We will totally come back.

    Great New York moment!

My friend told us about ordering her bagels from here.
    I LOVE NY bagels!

One summer, after traveling with each other for one week, on our last day in NY, my friends and I split up to each do our own thing.
Some went shopping, some slept in, and I...headed straight to a local bakery for a bagel. I forgot the name of it but I will never forget how amazing that bagel was!

    Fast forward to 2011....
Brilliant! Why didn't i think to find out if any bakeries in NY were selling and shipping bagels? Kudos to my friend Rose for introducing this to us!

I quickly ordered some. In 2 days, the package arrived.
There was still condensation in the bagel bags!!!
It took me a while to realize i had to toast the bagels for a bit longer and hotter than bread. But when I did...melt!!!!

The onion and everything bagels are soooo good!
And the crisp crunch texture in the chewiness....so delicious! This cannot be duplicated elsewhere outside of NY!!!

I ordered a bunch and froze them.
Bravo Zabar's for sharing this yummy goodness with everyone else!!

For expats of New York elsewhere, you'd probably be disappointed in these shipped Zabar's as I'm sure freshly baked and freshly eaten bagels are so divine! But for a girl on the other coast like me, it'll do.

My husband, an area native, always whined about the bread when we lived in DC.  I thought he was just being a pretentious snob (completely unlike my Maine-grown self when it comes to seafood superiority, but that's another story) until I discovered the Mecca that is Zabar's.

Their fresh, hot rye bread is the most delicious bread product EVER.  The bagels, knishes, and croissants are amazing too.

The deli guys are fantastic about helping you decide on your selections and are always generous with the samples.

Don't get me started on the vast, yet reasonably priced cheese section.

Upstairs, they have every kitchen good you didn't know you needed.  The staff are very helpful in directing you to what you want, telling you the secret specials (a free $9 pound of coffee if I buy a $14 French press? Don't mind if I do!), and even carting your purchases to the check-out counter while you continue to shop.

Just beware of the crazed, cart and cane-wielding little old women who will beat you down if you take the last rugelach!

Love this place.  A NY institution.  The only bad thing is it gets so darn crowded with the carts and narrow aisles.

I've never bought anything that was bad here.  Even their blackout cake at the bakery, which is hard to find a good one.

Ok. It is probably for the best that I live 3,000 miles away from this place.I would go broke if Zabar's were within a reasonable distance. Up until I had been to Zabar's I thought I knew delis, cheese and olive shops and bagels. There are some pretty mind blowing places out here on the west coast. However, I now realize there is a whole entire world out there that I hadn't ever tasted before. On my last day in New York, I trekked it up to Zabar's and made a day of eating their food and sitting with a book in central park. I got olives and marinated peppers, a garlic cheese spread, a bagel, a vegetable knish, Israeli salad, a chocolate croissant and a cannoli. And I just sat there, in Central Park, devouring each simplistically awesome bite.

I recently found out they ship anywhere in the US. I know what everyone is getting for Christmas.

Oh and the ads they play in the store while you shop are so hilariously and unintentionally cute; I couldn't stand it.

For some reason, Zabar's always brings out my inner eight-year old because my two favorite things here have been: (1) spinach and feta croissant and (2) chicken nuggets with their spicy/tomatoey/creamy sauce.  While I've had to cut back considerably in recent "attempts" to get "healthy," they come highly recommended.

Their cheese section is to die for - more accessible and varied than most places in the neighborhood (Fairway, Citarella, Trader Joes, etc.).  The produce section is small and overpriced; but that's not why you're going here (unless it's an hour before company arrives and you've run out of garlic, then you're paying for proximity).

Their upstairs is awesome - it's surprisingly one of the only kitchen supply stores in the neighborhood (Basics Plus has a much more limited selection - and way more overpriced).  Great stuff for sudden weekend baking inspiration (since walking all the way to Bed/Bath/Beyond would have quickly depleted any motivation).  I've also come here to get my knives sharpened and now my knives are sharp and I'm cutting tomatoes like it's my job (at least the three we got sharpened)

Lots of great prepared foods (see above: chicken nugs) - smoked salmon in every preparation imaginable, and on Sundays there's almost always some prosciutto available to "sample." Also - their tea selection is great!

I wish they were open later - their hours are really amenable to those of us who work a little later in the evening.  But over all, a great asset to the neighborhood!

Zabar's the grocery store = awesome.  Zabar's the cafe = "teh suck"!

Disappointed in my experience at the cafe.  I was craving sushi, but when I looked at their sushi offerings, the fish / sushi rolls looked wayyy past it's prime.  Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.  So I decided to try their "Za-berry" offering - basically, Zabar's version of frozen yogurt.

I was the 3rd person in line, so I observed the employees' interactions with customers.  They were next to lifeless and would rather chat with each other than do anything.  So once I was up at the cashier, I simply asked for the blueberry flavored yogurt with granola.  What did I get?  The plain original.  Employee obviously didn't listen to me / pay attention to me.

You're going to kick me when I say this, but I actually didn't complain at that moment.  I figured, it was a really nice day out, why ruin it by being a bitch?  Also, I don't like to waste food; I mean, they probably would've just thrown it out, right?  So I'm going to be a wimp and complain about it behind a computer screen. :P

Oh, and when the employee gave me my change back, she didn't even say "Have a nice day" or anything to that effect.  Nothing.  So I simply said nothing back.

Original flavor was alright, and I did enjoy eating it at the park bench on the median of Broadway and 80th, but geez employees, try to give a shit once in a while.

pleeeeeeeease come to D.C. Zabars!!!!!  I wish I could have brought back all the kitchen devices I loved.

I died a little bit inside knowing I wouldn't be able to come back here for a few more months.

I had heard about Zabar's from countless people and I use to frequent the Vinegar Factory on the UES  quite often, once upon a time.

After my first visit to Zabar's, I definitely get what the hype is about. The selection is amazing, all the pre-made foods and meals all looked delicious and the staff working here was down to earth and friendly. My gf and I ended up buying a few knick-knacks and goodies, but between seeing there impressive selection of cheeses, meats and breads, I was starving by the time I left haha! I don't make it up to the UWS as often as I like anymore, but when I'm the hood again, I'll be sure to stop by, even if it's just for some goodies.

Though I am a self-professed foodie this is my first time visiting Zabars. I just don't get to the UWS that often and there are so many good emporiums downtown that never had any reason to travel to UWS.

The grocery selection and quality of  the food store is impressive though for me I was most impressed by the cookware/houseware shop upstairs. Do not miss this. This is among the best selections for kitchen gadgets/cookware/small appliances in the city. Very helpful and knowledgable staff as well.

If you are in UWS, Zabars is worth the visit but it doesn't do anything better or worst than Whole Foods or any other high-end grocer in the city.

I've shopped here for the last 20 years and I used to love this place but I was there today, and i was shocked at how narrow the isles have become. the store was so packed with slower moving senior citizens that I can't see how, in an emergency requiring a fast evacuation, any of the customers would be able to make it out the doors in time. to me the store seems to have insufficient access and looks like a tragedy waiting to happen. i would constantly worry knowing my parents or children shopped there.

Zabar's is a classic New York gourmet market whenever I ventured within Upper West Side. Family owned and operated for generations to ensure fine quality control. This market has been a resource for fresh produce of meat, fish and bread. A cafe on the corner provides solid substance for lunch/brunch of prepared foods. Zabar's cheese department is very extensive. Sadly, the opportunity for inquiries in the administrative office on the second floor was closed for me. Oy Vey!

A scene from Tom Hanks's 1998 movie "You've Got Mail" was shot from Zabar's. With traditional values, in conjunction of, the added value of honesty and integrity where the founders Louis and Lillian Zabar know how to work New Yorkers' heart by means through the stomach.

Just one question, because I am slightly confused:

Why would you pay $6.50 for a REFRIGERATED bagel with lox?!

    So,so disappointing,

This is in regular rotation for my grocery shopping: TJs, westside market, and Zabars.

Get the nova. Get the smoked salmon spread. Get the bulgarian feta. You pretty much can't go wrong here. Also, they recently added the lite choice fro yo in the cafe. As a fro yo addict, this pleases me to no end.

This review is for the Cafe. There is one woman behind the counter (this morning 12/21) who should be fired. Politely aking to have my plain, untoasted bagel simply cut in half again, she refused. "we don't do that". I said incredulously, "you don't do that?, come on" Reluctantly and with a bad attitude she did. Apparently the do. what a dump.
