+ just came back from hmb and i was pleasantly surprised by my stay here after reading so-so reviews!

because of the reviews, we requested a stay in the main house to avoid any pet allergies in the pet-friendly portion of this b&b. room #6, a corner room at the top of the stairs, was not luxurious but it was spotless and comfortable. we loved the fireplace and really, really, really loved the clawfoot spa tub.

the price is a major plus -- i paid $125/night, which was $75-$100/night cheaper than other b&bs nearby or hotels in sf. the place is big enough to where you dont feel awkward, as if you're staying in a stranger's house ... but i guess you are.

the breakfast was not gourmet but it was a light, fresh, welcome part of the morning. lots of very fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, breads, coffee, oj, and a slice of quiche or waffle or oatmeal. our breakfast-mates also staying at the inn were mostly european visitors, and made for some interesting, pleasant conversation.

-- i agree with another reviewer; the bed was not so comfy. :(

We spent a night in Zaballa House since it was the most classy economical pet-friendly lodging in the area. We were assigned room #20, which is upstairs above the shops and faces the rear parking lot and court. The room was away from the road noise, and that helped significantly since Zaballa House is on a busy street.

The room looked like our first apartment - scarcely furnished with no warmth to break up the sterile white walls and ceiling. It was not within the main house, but instead above the shops in a new separate building, and hence did not carry over any of the historic charm of the old house. Nonetheless, the room was large, clean and although it was pet friendly, had no lingering odors or signs of pet habitation.

One complaint: the bed and pillows were nearly medieval sleep technology. The cheap mattress and planar pillows made for a very rough night. I've slept in nicer motel beds.

Overall, a glorified motel in the modern rooms, and likely a nice B&B inside the main house (we wouldn't know ; not pet friendly in the main house).

We had a great night at Zaballa House!  We walked in at about 3pm the day we wanted to stay there, and they were so nice and even gave us the weekday rate even though it was Saturday night.  It's very close to everything - right in the middle of downtown and only a 15-20 minute walk to the beach.  There's a full breakfast included with the room (Sheila will tell you all about it when you arrive), and on Saturday (and maybe Friday?) nights they have free wine and appetizers in their little sitting room.  Turned out we stayed in a pet-friendly room, but we didn't have a reaction at all which is really surprising since we are both VERY allergic.  The walls are a bit thin, but other than that it was a delightful stay and we would definitely go back if visiting Half Moon Bay again.

Booked a room at Zaballa House on http://Expedia.com. En route to Half Moon Bay from SFO, I called to confirm our reservation. I had to leave a message and the woman there called back to say they had no record of our reservation. I called http://Expedia.com and they faxed Zaballa house confirmation of our payment via Expedia. When we got to Zaballa house they confirmed our reservation. We were expecting a bed and breakfast type place: charming, maybe some antiques, quaint, warm, etc. They put us up in one of the motel-like rooms surrounding the b and b. The room was plain and very bare bones with an overly pungent smell of chemical cleaner and potpourri. My husband began having trouble breathing in our room and my skin became very itchy. We stayed in the room for about 20 minutes before we called it quits and went to talk to the hotel manager to ask for a different room. He was very helpful and since the place was pretty dead, seemed to have no problem setting us up in a room within the Zaballa house, not in the motel part. That room was nice enough, but we had a sour taste in our mouth after the nasty smelling motel room. Breakfast the next morning was okay, but not worth the price of the stay. I wonder why they would put us up in the motel part if the B and B was empty and we had paid ahead of time. It felt a little off to me. Would not return.

Half Moon Bay is like the city I'd build if I only had a little money. It's quaint without being annoying. The Zaballa House is also quaint without being annoying, and in a charming way.

I stayed there New Years Day and we enjoyed the room. It was smallish, but felt comfortable. There were antique-y things and the bathtub was really nice. It was cheap enough for me not to complain and we got every dollar worth.

The breakfast was nice, and being a guy who doesn't eat eggs, I was happy with the breads and so on. They had run out of Orange Juice by the time we got down there, but what are you gonna do?

I'd like to stay again, someday. The location is perfect for walks to the shops and restaurants and then back to the room to warm up, because it's always freakin' cold!

Neat, well maintained, $110 per night includes nice breakfast of bagels, quiche, cereal, and fruit.

Zaballa House was the first hotel we saw cruising up main street, and it looked too good to pass. The hotel serves wine, cheese and crackers on Saturday night starting at 5. Our hostess Sheila was very pleasant to deal with, and courteously entertained us drunks, while thrashing out the pros and cons of the US and Australian education systems.

We decided to go for a bike ride to Montara, then got lost and arrived at Half Moon Bay instead. I think we saw much more, and the views were just beautiful, a real surprise.

We managed to piss off lots of people on the way; for being on the road, for being on the footpath, for being off the path, for going too fast etc. Is anyone available to advise me on how to ride around here?

As per usual, road signs are just confusing. One said "cyclists must use 35" with no explanation on where the 35 is (if we were paying attention, we'd have known we were on it already). Ended up on a quiet, sealed cycleway/walkway next to San Andreas lake and Lower Crystal springs reservoir, both perfect.

There's one climb on the 92 going to the coast. In the traffic, managed to overtake a new red Camaro 3 times.

So, on Saturday night we starrted having the complimentary wine and cheese. The wine hit us quickly after the ride, and we all thrashed out the education system with Sheila our host. Feeling the glow, I lost my camera at this point, the only valuable thing that I own. My old bike was nicked here, and the one I'm riding now I got for free.

We walked about 100 yards to the saloon, and met Carlos the local Azteca. He told us about a concert with 5 bands, and one was supposed to be Mexican. So we turn up, and there's one band, and everyone's Mexican. We stuck out like dogs balls, but didn't mind as we were toasted already. The old ladies watching us giggled at our attempts at dancing banda.

Stumbling out the front, we got given a Corona, which I thought was generous, and then asked for cash. Well I've only got a twenty, and he promised to give me some change. One good samaritan gives us $3 to put in, and warns us to ask for the 20 back. Feeling at one with the people, I tell him not to worry, and we did get 12 back in change, and couple of more beers, so it was all good. I don't know when my girlfriend lost her wallet, but the temporary panic turned into relief since it was handed in already, bless them, minus the cash, curse them! Zig zag back to the saloon for one more, and wake up with a headache, and without sunglasses; god knows where they went.

Ever had that panic where you wake up and think "where's my mobile phone / camera / wallet"? I really didn't have my camera, and had no real clue where I left it. Got out at 8am, probably still stinking like a brewery, and Sheila had put it behind the desk.

We hoover down half the table at breakfast anticipating a big days ride. Heading up highway 1, we hope to get through Devils slide somehow. Its a construction zone, and definitely not passable. A kind jogger passing by shows us a side road, which starts about a half mile off the freeway in bushland. We'd have never found it otherwise.

The track winds up over the hills right next to the sea and has truly spectacular views. Some sections are bitumen, but has been washed away totally in parts.

Got back home at last, after having food thrown at us on the highway(didn't get hit), and trying to share the roads with cars and walkers. I wish we could just shut Golden Gate park off to cars altogether.

Half moon bay gets 5 stars.

The hubby and I wanted to find a bed and breakfast, not too far from home, that we could hide in for a romantic New Years holiday. We were on an enamored Half Moon Bay kick and thought that would be an excellent location for such a trip. After searching around on the internet, comparing prices, and value we opted for the Zaballa House.

Zaballa House claims it is the oldest house in Half Moon Bay, but it is kept in superb condition with sparkling hard wood floors and bright shiny windows. The decorating didn't quite live up to the house itself, as the decor was on the wrong side of the Goodwill/ Grandma's House vibe.

We stayed in room 8 for it's antique tub and fireplace. Unfortunately they kept the B&B so hot, that the only way we would consider using our fireplace, was with the window open. Main Street traffic and January cold doesn't exactly lend itself to romantic evenings...

For the two breakfasts that we had there, they served a frittata one morning and a quiche the next, along with a continental breakfast area of bagels, muffins, and the such. It was tasty, but  not remarkable.

We had a pleasant time, but I don't think that we would return. There are several other B&Bs in the area, and the idea of checking them out, is far more appealing than returning here.

*On an extra note, they have a cute kitty that wanders the house. If you have allergies, you might want to consider that.*

We stayed here on a Saturday night because I was officiating a wedding in the area.  It was nice but it's probably easier to spell it out in +/-
.
+ They gave me a reduced rate on the room because I was going to a wedding nearby. ($120 a night)
+ The service was very friendly.
+ The breakfast was very yummy - crust less quiche and waffles plus all the usual stuff.
- The room we got (#5) was on the ground floor and had windows to the street and alley (noise/not much privacy).  We were woken up by all the noise from the dining room in the early morning which made me cranky.  I felt mildly better when I remembered  that someone else made breakfast.
- The rooms are nice but not exactly posh.
? - everyone waiting to check out had a complaint.  I shelved my complaint about the noise from the dining room because I felt bad for the lady at the desk.

In the end I'd probably stay there again to have a nice non-corporate hotel to sleep in but probably not for a special weekend getaway. I'd be sure to get a quiet room upstairs though.

PS: they say it's haunted but I didn't get any bad vibes - maybe it's a friendly Casper type of ghost.

In an effort to get away from San Jose and enjoy a night away from the city I picked Half Moon Bay. I looked on yelp for something that would suit my need to get away along with the check book. Zaballa's House seemed like the right place. I called the hotel and booked myself a room. Now, if you can picture an antique house (literally a house) with lots of rooms, that's what it was. I walked in and checked in, the receptions was very young but very nice. She walked me to my room and opened the door, to the left there was an antique bath tub. Very very cute! The room was pretty small but big enough for me. I had been warned that there was in TV, so I was prepared and brought a lap top and of course some pick me up Sex & the City episodes. The bed was comfortable. The walls are a bit thin so you can hear everything going on outside. The nice thing about Zaballa House is that it is located in downtown Half Moon Bay and you an walk anywhere. The ocean is kind of far maybe about a mile or so. They do prepare breakfast, I slept in and missed it but the muffins they were baking sure smelled good!
