The barbecue experience was really really good, that much I recall. But even 3-4 years later I can echo the other yelpers who noticed how filthy the surroundings are. I remember everything was sticky and a little unfresh, even the dishes on our table. I recently entertained the notion of eating here again, and then remembered that if the dining area looks like it could use a pressure wash, how would the kitchen be? Shudder. I just wish there were more cook at your table restaurants in this area. I just tried T-Valley in Dublin and it was so fresh and clean I don't think I could stand to go to Koryo again if I wanted to.
Has anyone else seen the MOUSE?
Now let me be clear; I am willing on occasion to sacrifice atmosphere and service for delicious food. I grew up in Chinese Restaurants after all.
But in order to make up for the presence of a mouse in the main dining room, the food needs to be crazy good and it wasn't.
I kinda feel like hurling just thinking about it. Obviously not going back.

I hate going there...only go there cause its probably late night and my friends or company drag me there. Their Service is like eating sand. and food is forgettable. and they put MSG in the food cause i end up with glossy slippery texture on my teeth, thirsty and i get headaches by the time i leave.
If you really need to eat there...just order rice and eat side dishes...never can go wrong with that order.
parking sucks too...but what can you do with all the club rats (nothing wrong being one) hanging around there...plus...theres a really good sushi place and a noodle joint in the lot...and karaoke i guess...the korean restaurant takes up room in a nice hangout place.

This place has been reliably good, not great, but pretty darn good every time in my experience. Banchan is nothing to write home about, but again nothing to complain about either. I'm a kalbi fiend, and they serve it up pretty tasty. Service was nice. Ambience left something to be desired. I'll keep looking for my favorite Korean spot in town, but in the meantime Koryo will keep me going.

I've only been here once, based on Yelp reviews, but once was enough.
The four of us were seated in the side room, which was rather unpleasantly fluorescently-lit. We ordered about $60 worth of food, which was mediocre at best.
When we returned home, having one bathroom in the house was suddenly insufficient. The after party pretty much convinced me never to return.

this place is very dirty looking. I hated every minute I had to sit there. The kimchi gigae was good but the other dishes were mediocre and the banchan was just ok. But the restaurant itself is beyond the normal utilitarian look of korean restaurants. this place was down right ick and service was horrible. would never set foot in here again.
This place gets busy at night, I've been here around 10 and this place is slammed pack.
What can I say about well marrinated meat and fire...hmmmm. First of all, cooking your own food is not for everyone. My best friend is not good at this. I love doing this, but the fire gets hot sitting in the middle of the table. But I love getting just the edges slightly blacken.
This place is also good for small groups who interact well in moving the food (little side dishes that comes with your meal) and spending time cooking and chatting. You have to know which part of the menu you order from for pre-cooked and self cooking.
The overall price, is reasonable for the amount of food you get. It's mainly meat, meat, and more meat.
Don't expect service to be great, they bring your food and all the side dishes and pretty much leave you to your own devices. Many Korean restaurant I've been too are like this.
I've always loved the marinades they have on their BBQ meats.
The food and prices were so good I could overlook the slightly aloof service.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to overlook the cockroach I found in my chap chae a year ago. Maybe one day when that memory fades away I will go back. The did give us another dish and yelled at the kitchen workers. The food was pretty good and I hope my experience was an isolated experience.

Uhh...I was surprised that this place didn't impress me as much as I'd expected after yelpin' it. I thought it was way overpriced for the amount of meat they gave us to bbq. Also compared to other Korean BBQ places I've been to and even in Korea this place was WAY SMOKY when we were cooking...as in eye-burning slash watering agony. It takes a lot for me to not like a restaurant but this place was hurtin!! Probably not going to return here at least until I try every other Korean place on telegraph. They will have to seriously redeem themselves if I am to upgrade my rating..
Maybe it was because it was late. Maybe it was because I was hungry. Maybe it was because my *friend* recommended it. Whatever the reason, Koryo rates as one of the better Bay Area Korean restaurants I've eaten at so far. Granted, this doesn't include Gomtang, Ohgane, or any of the San Jose Korean restaurants; however, the food hit the spot.
Dol Sot Bi Bim Bop! The service sucks. The place will make you reek of BBQ Korean food. And I'd endure it all gladly to taste that wonderful Dol Sot Bi Bim Bop. You don't know what I'm talking about? Try something new you wuss!
Lunch ($10-15) (single visit)
Food: 2
Service 3
Decor: 2
Other: 2
I was tempted to give this place a single star, but the food didn't make me want to vomit. I guess I've been spoiled with good Korean food throughout my life, so I was thoroughly under-impressed by this place. The service gets 3 stars instead of 2 because they gave us some free bindaeddeok, which was over-fried, but it was free.
I'm not from the Oakland area, but I understand that there's better quality Korean food in the immediate vicinity.

I was a search for Korean restaurant since Mr Lee closed. Finally! So far I had
Little dishes - as good if not better.
Dol Sot Bim Bim Bah - better than Mr Lee, dare I say
KimChee stew - hot hot hot, they actually make it hot if you ask them
Fry Mackerel - fry mackerel is as good
Egg pancake - different, but the sauce is better.
I am pretty happy with the find and will be back often.
Yummy! First day back at school and went out (again!) for the ol' b-day (I'm seriously going to push this birthday thing as fa-a-a-ar as I can). Fourteen people - we got seated in the back room, which was a good thing for everone else at the restaurant because we got ROW-dy. From what I remember, they were quite accomodating...but then again, what do I remember?
The food was great - I kept eating and eating and finally had to stop because I was interrupted with a cake behind me. If I hadn't been stopped against my will, I probably could've sat there all night. Bi bim bap was great, as was the spicy BBQ pork, and the jap chae. The rice cakes were a little overdone though. Oh, and they gave us two free appetizer things, which was very nice.
Koryo, thanks for taking care of us...and everyone else, thanks for being there and for being awesome.

Date: Sep 2007
Who: 3 adults, 2 kids
Bill: dunno - didn't pay
Used to be my fix for grilled sweet Korean beef while living in the east bay but will never go back due to the ridiculously bad service, even for a Korean restaurant.
*long post warning*
The wait staff seriously could not give a rats a$$ about you, the food, or your eating experience... unless you're a really old Korean guy. From the moment we walk in you can tell the staff was pissed off at us: the boys kept tapping the algae covered fish tank and we didn't speak Korean so we were treated as non-korean-speaking-koreans... that means we were second class.
We got waved to a table and it was just little thing after little thing that alone wouldn't bother you but the water was building behind the dam for me. Finally the food came and the waitress slapped everything down in the middle of the table (even though they were obvious non-sharing dishes), gave the kids a dirty look and stormed off. That was it - I was pissed. I must have looked pretty heated b/c the ring leader of the staff actually walked over to our table to ask if everything was ok.
At this point I remembered why everyone treats old Korean men nicely (because they will throw you a public verbal beatdown at moments notice). I mustered up all the lines that I could remember from Korean videos and with my jacked up, broken Korean I threw down something that I *think* roughly translated to:
'... doe de chae! doe de chae, ee guh mo ya!
(what in tarnation! what in tarnation is this!)
'... sa lam dul eh luh keh ha nun gut ah nee ya!'
(this isn't the way you treat people!)
'... way gu leh? oo le jul muh suh?'
(what? because we're young?)
'... nuh moo gee boon na puh, uhee shee, nuh moo gee boon na puh! cham na!'
(my feelings are terrible, dang nabit, my feelings are terrible! you all need to those daikon radishs out of your rears!)
It was pretty funny how quickly the ice queens warmed up after that. Too bad I had to bring the whoopification down from my deep inner Korean roots to get there.
If you do go, the galbi is pretty good. They use some charcoal type heat rather than gas so you get that nice smoky flavor going. They also have good spicy seabass soup.

Decent, late night hole. I order Bi Bim Bap and a side of meat. The tea tastes like rinse water but I drink it anyhow as I imagine it breaks down the animal fibers.
Very good place, below average atmosphere.
Great bulgogi, typical average Seoul-like service.
So many of my Korean friends say it's the best in the bay area,
haven't had better, and the side dishes are very good. Also
they bring lettuce like they should in abundance!!!!
One of my all time favorite Korean places.
Always friendly service and good good food.
Favorite dish is the dol sot bim bim bap which is rice in a cast iron type pot with loads of veggies, some beef and a sunny side up egg. You mix in a spicy, slightly sweet sauce.
Also a fav is the deh ji bul go gi (spicy pork bbq). Since my dad doesn't eat pork we were able to substitute this with chicken.
I've been coming here for at least 10 years so this is definitely a place of good eats!
Come here for the food, and the chance to eat your meal off the trunk of an enormous redwood(?) trunk/table! Not for the service. If you can turn the bad service into a game it improves the experience dramatically.
For example:
Play guess how long till you get the water refill, or any to begin with...
Place bets on whether she will leave the water jug on your table for you or come back in 10 seconds and take it away leaving your devastated..
Its fun really. Especially when you know to expect it.
Aside from the entertainment/staff, the food is awesome. Their hotpots are so tasty and juicy and tender, nice crusty rice on the bottom, mmmm. Got the spicy octopus last time and it was great, a touch chewy but fresh and damn tasty, love the sweet/spicy sauce too. A touch hot for my wife but almost hot enough for me, probly a good level for most folks.
I've been going here for years, and it never disappoints! The service is consistent and the food is always fresh and served fast. Great bbq and plenty of little (banchan) dishes.
I've only gone for dinner, so not sure how the other meals are. Sort of on the more expensive side, but authentic and worth it!
I thought the service was OK, but then again, reading the reviews below it might have been because I'm white and we were with an older gentleman that looks Korean... The waitress steered us toward the marinated meats (she mentioned the other ones might be bland) and besides forgetting our beer and then waiving us off when we reminded her, things went OK. We didn't have to wait and no hot coals were dropped on our lap, so I consider the evening a success.
Oh, and the large pancake with onions, scallops and oysters was really good. And large.

Was this place good before or something? Some ppl gave such good reviews. I came here w/ my family who speak Korean and the waitresses still frowned and still gave us horribly slow service. The restaurant is very dirty by Korean standards. I don't particularly like flies swarming around my banchan. Dad ordered beef tonkatsu which can't be f*cked up. Mom ordered fish which was good and I ordered bulgogi which was decent. I don't think that I will ever return to Koryo. I wanted to like this place because it was in a cute little wooden plaza but Koryo has just reaffirmed why I only eat Korean food in Oakland if I am forced to, otherwise I'd rather drive the thirty mins to El Camino.

Good quality korean restaurant. Nothing flashy just solid korean food. This is close (or in) to the temescal district which is fast becoming a new gourmet ghetto.
I was actually introduced to this place by a good friend of mine who knew my certain fondness for spicy marinated meats and savory vegetables.....we usually hit the joint after a round of golf at Tilden and when having your clothes reek of smoke thereafter not a serious issue. I would not recommend taking a date here, however, since no one wants to kiss a piece of coal (talking about smell here).
The menu is typical Korean BBQ, with kalbi, my fave Kim Chee chigge soup, and other assorted condiments. Service is a little slow at times, so be prepared to talk a lot and eating all the condiments before the entrees arrive.
We ordered a side of mixed greens and although it was very good and spicy, my sister raised her chopsticks and out came a paper wrapper that the same chopsticks come packaged in that had:
a. Either fallen in and gotten mixed with the saute process
b. Recycled food
c. Stupid mistake
Either way, that made us stop eating immediately and since that incident, we have never gone back. I don't even want to imagine what else may have "fallen" into other dishes subsequently after that, and just camouflaged well by the dark sauces.
Ugh.
A 3 for the food, but minus two stars for ruining our meal, our expectations, and our trust in the establishment.

This restaurant is the reason I signed up with Yelp. As everyone else has said below; if you're not Korean or Caucasian, you're going to get awful service.
(this is what you call a "black shop" meaning they will find a way to rip you off or cheat you)
They forgot to bring out one of our orders, which is understandable - but they also forgot to take it off our bill. Even after I had our bill corrected it was still rather high for just 2 dishes (nearly $50). When I asked what this was for they stated it was for the $25 BBQ meat we ordered. Actually I specifically pointed to a different BBQ meat when ordering but they accused me of ordering the more expensive meat. But it still doesn't explain the high bill.
On a separate occasion some of my co-workers were in a large group and were told to re-arrange their seating so they could share the condiments with each other. They reminded the waitresses for their drinks a few times which never came out. The service was horrible in general, so they left and only tipped 1 PENNY! The waitress then ran out and yelled,
"WHERE'S MY TIP?!!"
My co-workers explained that the service was horrible so they didn't think a tip was deserved in this case. The waitress threatened that the next time they came back this tip would automatically be added on the bill. But of course who would go back after this bad experience?
Over-all the food is just OK.
Ok so they get a star for having good food--not the best but eatable. Their service however leave much to be desired. I mean I had to walk across the restaurant to serve myself & my friends water not once not twice but 3-5 times. After that I just gave up on the banchan. I mean we lived with one serving of our favorite banchan. There are far better Korean food with much better service like San Maru, which is right across the street. The waitresses are not happy people at Koryo BBQ. I don't know if the owner is enslaving them or what. Look I'm Korean born in Korea. I've eaten Korean food with steel chopsticks since birth. I know a good Korean restaurant when I see one. AVOID Koryo BBQ.
Crave it. Love it. Must have it!
My ex and I have been coming here almost every wednesday night for the past 4 years. Get this, we don't hang out other than having dinner together on wednesay night. We didn't know who should get the restaurant when we broke up. And neither of us could bear the pain of saying goodbye to our favorite waitress, Jenny.
After reading other yelpers' reviews, I notice the reason why people give poor rating is because of their service.
Well, a lot of these ladies don't have a strong command of the English language and of course they would feel more comfortable and probably be more willing to help you to your satisfaction if you speak their language. Granted, this isn't a fine dining restaurant where the waitor/waitress come harrass you every 5 minutes to make sure things are okay, but we never have problems getting things we ask for. If you're wondering, neither of us speaks Korean.
Jenny is a very nice lady. She has taught us some korean and how to pronounce some of the names of the dishes that we have come to love.
As far as food goes, I can't be more pleased.
For starters, they have a generous variety of banchan. If you're a regular, they would even give you a pancake-like thing. The sweet potatoes are so great that I guarantee you'll love them. When you run out, just tell them that you would like some more and they have no problems refilling them for you.
Dol-Sot Bi Bim Bab is heavenly. They have the right amount of vegetable, meat, and rice. The searing hot stonepot chars the rice and really brings out the favor.
Jab Chae also has a very nice flavor. It has a very subtle sweetness to it that people who can't handle the korean spice should appreciate.
We've tried most of their casserole soup, and we like soong tofu jijge the most. It has a very nice sea food undertone and generous amount of tofu!
Yuu Kae Jang is also very good. On the surface, it looks so red to point that you would think it's too spicy to sit comfortably in your stomach. But after you have a sip of the broth, you'll have a change of mind. If you're in the mood for a salty but flavorful broth, give this a try.
We don't normally get the BBQ (galbi, bulgokgi, daeji bulgokgi) from here though. I just don't think they're as good as the ones they servedin "My Tofu House" located on Geary Street in San Francisco.
I think Jenny works on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Be nice to her, or any of the ladies, and I"m sure she'll do the same. When it's busy, just sit back and relax! Enjoy the company of your friends and you'll be served with yummy food sooner or later!
Give this place a try if you live in Oakland/Berkeley area :-)
Sahn Maru down the street is closed on Tuesdays, so we braved the service here, if that's what you call it. Now, as someone who has the Korean "look" but is not, I am intimately familiar with waitstaff's disappointment at my lack of expertise in hangoma. There is not a single Korean place I've found where there isn't this kind of discrimination. However, the treatment at Koryo is downright RUDE from the start. When we asked for rice, we got a muttered, "itsha com-MING".
Minus: The seafood pancake was disappointing, the pork kimchee dish had hide-and-see pork, individual plates were NOT given, they refused to refill the kimchee, there is a weird/disgusting fish tank near the door, and there were teeny flies buzzing around everywhere
Plus: the octopus dish was yummy, bibimbap had a nice crunch in stone pot, the kalbi was adequate, and six of us got out of there under $15/each for 5 dishes
I enjoy my dives as much as the next gal, but the level of disservice is ridiculous here. I'd rather eat at Jack-in-the-Crack.

Got a love Koryo because it's the one that started it all.
Having grown up in Oakland with old school places like Sorabol (now the Jong Ga House) and Seoul house in downtown that has been there forever, I gotta show love to the restaurant that made Oakland's Korea-town what it is. There's a reason that the Koreana (Pusan) market moved in from their old downtown spot and now with the 5 top korean places in Norcal are right there, it's popping so much that all of the 415 and 408 folks are coming over, jocking it, yelping like they own it.
It's open late, and the food is great - almost everything. Pls, stop talking about the bi-bim-bap - everything that's in there is already on your table so if you want it just mix it together in a big bowl and ask for an egg and red sauce (kgo-choo-jang).
Next, have it all cooked in the back - it's just as good and you don't have to worry about getting too smokey or eating undercooked food.
Last, the wait staff are getting better - they have a dry sense of humor and love babies. So go get your best friends baby (they could use a break anyway) and bring him/her to Koryo and watch the waitresses light up and want to hold your baby and show him/her off to the rest of the staff. And you'll get better service

I am always quite surprised at how much people love this place. The food quality is decent but perhaps being from the LA area, the quality does not compare but for the east bay it isn't too bad. Solid korean food. Bit on the pricey side.
One thing people should remember that in korean culture usually the waitresses don't necessarily come check up on you, you just need to call them. Korean places often get bad reps for having terrible customer service, but culturally its often common practice for the customers to call out to the waitresses when needed.

Well, I have been going to this restaurant for years. I love the food, but the "OK" service is what it is.
I love the bbq pork, broiled chicken, the pancakes, stoneware fried rice, Tempura deep fried oysters ( not panfried), and the spicy sauce.
The food is good, the prices are reasonable, comfortable eating area.
Downside is the inconsistent customer service. Sometimes they're nice and sometimes theyre a bitch.
So come here for the food but dont expect much from the staff. But if you are treated well that day ...it must be your lucky day!

o HELLLLLLLLLLLLLZ NO ... HAIL NO!!! WHY ON EARTH WAS I THE ONE WHO HAD TO WITNESS THIS?
prior to going to my friend's hockey game out in oakland, and having such a positive experience last time i was in oakland, i HAD to, lemme repeat, i HAD TO eat korean food because it's been 2 weeks since i had korean food, and i swear, i was phenin it BIG TIME!
ok, so, the minute i sat down to scope out their menu, something, out of nowhere, dropped right before my eyes ... then, it hit me... then, it made eye contact with me ...
yes, YES YES! guess what it was? no, not a strand of hair, not a fly, but it was a fackin a damn cockroach that was crawling on the table towards ME, wehre i was sitting at... i literally screamed, jumped a feet, and almost pushed the table down. everyone stared at me wondering what was going on. i'm sorry but it was damn cockroach... no words could express ... i just picked up my keys and as i was about to walk out the door when this lady who was eating the table next to me said, there was a dead bug in one of her bahnchans (sidedishes)
NEVER EVER EVER will i come here again!!!
NEVER!
i'm still getting mad chills at the moment. i swear, the whole day, i felt so itchy... i hope that damn cockroach didn't lay any of her eggs on me. i swear, it was a flying cockroach.. omg. that was sick.
i'm tired now so i'm going to write where i DID end up going tomorrow.

I stopped here on my walking trek from the north end of Rockridge to Jack London Square. Every masochist should try that one day.
We decided to cancel out any calories we burned with lunch at Koryo about a quarter of the way into our trip. The place is smoky with barbecue and overrated. Our bulgogi was only okay. If you're going to do Korean, try somewhere else.

"FIRE..., I have Fire!" Literally and exquisitely ask for a table to have a charcoal grill in the center where you grill, and sometimes burn, your own meats (Bul Go Gi - Shortribs, beef, spicy pork, etc.). This is not your normal sit down dinner but an ethnic experience for Foodies and adventurous palates alike.
Grilled meats are the center attraction. The first time we tried Korean BBQ we didn't know about making Lettuce Wraps with rice and a selection of the Kim Chee accompaniments (not appetizers - several little bowls delivered to the table after ordering). We still make it American style of one large wrap instead of the Korean single mouthful at a time. The mix of flavors range from various flavors of spicy, sweet, pungent and savory. There are even little cured fishies "bait" that add a subtle flavor that I was surprised I liked so much.
Another unique treat to try is the seafood Bi Bim Bop. This is a mixture of seafood and vegetables over rice in a hot stone bowl. The treat is to let the dish sit for a minutes after being brought to the table so the rice on the bottom crisps up and adds another texture to the dish. The seafood has a sweet and spicy sauce to flavor whereas the beef Bi Bim Bop on the menu above it does not (unless you ask for it).
I do have to acknowledge the Yelper Critics of this restaurant and share this WARNING! The service is usually more Bad than good, regardless of your apparent fame and fortunes. (Think about it, you're cooking your own food!) The sake is sometimes not warm enough. You'll have to ask for more napkins, and Kim Chee while you're at it. And your clothes will need to be laundered after this meal.
This is the "IDEAL place to take a date" if you want to find out if she's a Princess or an eat with your hands Down-to-Earth Gurl that can have fun in any situation. You'll get to know more about eachother here than at a fine dining venue like Boulevard. Think about that.
Koryo is one of the better Korean BBQ experiences because of its flaws/character. You don't have to agree.
Two words - meat coma.
Gas rating: 1
My gas-prone digestive system is uniquely composed to consume the food of my peoples. Hence, no gas despite four types of kimchi, two types of spicy soup and lots and lots of meat.
