I didn't want to like this place. It's just a standard Irish bar and it's in a touristy area. However, I went in and found myself pleasantly surprised.
Yes, it's a standard Irish bar. But it's nicely done and has a good amount of space. The food is pretty good, especially if you're hung over and recovering from sticker shock from shopping at B&H.
I haven't been there at happy hour so I have no idea what the crowd is like at that time. I can say this though, if you're in midtown near MSG and you need a place to grab lunch, it's a good spot.

I have been there today as a Saturday dinner by myself
I have been seated and relaxed by the waitstaff and i felt like home like usual Irish bars/pubs
I ordered steak and pinot grigio(hot weather sorry cabarnet!!)
I waited a little long but acceptable after I had my steak which was juicy and flavorful
pinot was nice and chilled
they do not serve tap water without asking
my waitress did not ask me about the desserts which i was up for
the check was around 35 which was OK with the prices of meat flying over the stratosphere in these days
nice place for groups and cozy
convenient location
needs little variety on the menu but enjoyable dinner

I was skeptical when my boy told me that we were going to an Irish Pub for lunch. Even though in Manhattan, I always expect pubs to smell like steamed cabbage and stale beer. Luckily, Tir Na Nog was not like any other Irish place.
The restaurant itself was quite classy. Very nice, laid back ambience. The tables were hard to get into because they had four legs on each corner and the booths were kind of makeshift, being just a row of chairs (atleast where I sat). That being said, it was overall a very comfortable atmosphere.
I was very pleased with my salmon, which was cooked medium to order. It came with vegatables and rice, both of which were pretty good. Most importantly my coca-cola was kept filled.
Good experience overall. Decent prices too. I believe my dish was $18.
This place isn't bad for a close to Penn Station meeting up spot -- especially if it's brunch or lunch.
I love the shepherd's pie, bangers and mash and burgers here, and the beer selection is decent as well. I also appreciate that I can make a large group reservation, which has served me well in the past. I don't like that they take the majority of sandwiches off the menu for dinner, leaving little under $20 available if you go after 5:00. For what this place is (a nicely decorated but still loud and casual pub), that's a little overpriced for my liking.

Tir Na Nog is a decent Irish bar/restaurant. Had the wings, which had a weird watery taste, kinda like they had been recently rescued from the East River. Might of just been a bad batch. Beer was varied, so was the service. Live cover bands on weekends (far preferable to dead cover bands) and nonstop sports on the TVs. Jim has Yelped.

Tir Na Nog gets my vote for best bar on the west side of MSG. It's a casual Irish pub less than a block away from the Garden. They serve a nice pint of Guinness and usually have soccer on the tube. If you are as lucky as I was recently, when I attended a Rangers-Flyers game, and happen to sit next to two lovely ladies from Ireland on vacay in NYC, then by all means you should invite them for a drink at Tir Na Nog after the game. That may or may not get you into trouble, like staying up to 4 or 5am on a work night, but it's all part of the journey right?

This place opened up during the first year I lived in NYC (1998). I happened to work in the building above the bar - and spent (too) many nights a week here. Not to brag, but I just happened to be one of the very first customers ever to taste a guinness from the taps (which is why I'm biased and this place gets 5 stars). The bar was opened by three friends who all grew up the tiny town of Abbeyfeale, Limerick. They made their way to NYC and into my heart when they opened this place. Most of the decorations (seating, woodwork, lamps and glass are artifacts rescued from abandoned buildings in Ireland). It's within a stone's throw of MSG, therefor a perfect spot before or after a game, concert, ect. You'll only see authentic Irish boys behind the bar who pour a perfect pint of guinness. Oh, how I miss you TNN.

Had a terrible time.
The mother-in-law was in town this weekend and I wanted to impress her. She had expressed an interest in an Irish pub with great Celtic music. They said on the phone that the band was "half Celtic".
Fast forward to our table, overlooking the bar, packed with B&T folk from NJ, seeking the first bar they can find after NJT'ing it into the city. The service was about the same as you'd expect from TGI Friday's - pretty bad. Each of us ordered unmemorable entrees that were, on average, $25. Not too bad - actually probably decent or good, but the atmosphere made it hard to enjoy.
We could barely hear each other talk, and were deafened by the Sweet Home Alabama music - nothing Celtic about it. I would have thought I was in Ohio, had it not been for the huge Duane Reade with neon lights and Amtrak signs behind the drummer's head.
A really bad experience that I'll leave for the commuters and those whose trains back home are delayed an hour. The pint of Guinness was delicious, at least.
Now I remember why I never eat in this area. We stopped in for food and drinks after watching Cirque du Soleil's Wintuk at MSG. We got there just before a crowd, so we were quickly seated. Drinks were fine, straightforward. Then came the food. Some of us had the potato leek soup, which wasn't bad at all. Others had the chicken soup, which they seemed to like. For my main, I opted for the beef carpaccio salad, which comes with arugula (which I love) and shaved parmesan. Slightly sweet dressing on the arugula, didn't quite work for me, given the peppery kick the greens have. Definitely was not into the creamy sauce on the beef though, yuck. And this was served with 2 stale toasts.
One guy in my group had the chicken, which looked ok, but was oddly presented - 1/2 the bowl had risotto, which the chicken sat on, and the other 1/2 of the bowl had gravy. Odd.
Two in our group ordered the fish and chips. One was fine, the other, the fish was raw inside. Pink. Raw fish is fine if it's sushi but not so good when it's supposed to be fried and flakey. I'm giving an extra star to this place because the server took it back and ordered a new one for my friend without a fuss. Very nice waitress.
The cover band playing that night was pretty good too, also contributing to that extra star, but if you're looking for good food, you could do much better in this city.

Tir Na Nog would probably be unremarkable anywhere else, but in this neighborhood it earns an extra star. Not far from TGI Friday's, Chipotle, 2 Blarney Stones, and Houlihan's, this little gem is refreshingly legit. The prices are a notch below "tourist," the barkeeps know their Irish beers and whiskeys, and you can always catch some football (you know what kind I mean) on the tv.
I lived basically right above this place for five years, and wish I'd stopped in a little more often. Other reviewers say the menu has changed, but the shepherd's pie was always a treat when I frequented the joint. Hope it's still there!
The other half of the extra star I owe to a night I dropped in to find only the bartender. Well, except for a party of Irish folks who stopped just long enough to order a tray full of Guinness pints and Jameson shots - then left it all untouched...

The rents are a fans of this place and so I went to have an Irish brunch. It was pretty decent... nothing crazy, but I would venture back if I needed a place in the area to fulfill its niche.

For years I have had two dreams that involve Madison Square Garden...
1. For the Knicks to win an NBA championship; and
2. To find a casual, but good, sit-down place to eat lunch near MSG.
Well, I don't know that #1 will happen in my lifetime :(, but I finally found a place that satisfies #2! I knew that I was in good hands from the moment I walked into Tir Na Nog. Tony, the maitre d', took great care of me and said that it was blasphemous for a red-headed Irish lass like me not to have frequented this place before. I agree!
My friend dines here regularly, and said that the menu was changed recently to include more American cuisine. Thankfully, though, the restaurant kept a few of the Irish staples. I passed on the corned beef since no one could make it like Nana did and chose the Shepherd's Pie. The pie was phenomenal with guinness braised lamb (no USDA ground beef here), peas and mashed potatoes with a hint of garlic. The entree was large and reasonably priced at $16. The restaurant also has salads and burgers for under $15.
The restaurant was packed with regulars for lunch, which is especially noteworthy on a rainy Tuesday in August. My friend said that he always gets a table with or without reservations, but that the maitre d' really likes it when he makes a reservation.
For soccer fans, the bar is the kind of place where you can watch the game (Tir Na Nog was showing today's match between England and Romania) and have a Guinness...or five.

Though located in one of my least favorite areas of New York, I've been here many times. I used to work a couple blocks away and we frequently went here for after work Happy Hours. Everyone used to roll their eyes when this place would be chosen and then we would go over there and be taken care of marvelously well. Their finger food during Happy Hours is much better than average, the service is always friendly and unlike some places in the area, they know not only how to take a reservation, but KEEP it as well.
I've also done lunch here a few times and it's definitely one of the best in the area.
I wouldn't consider it especially authentic however.
Also, you DO NOT want to be caught dead here when there's a big event at MSG. I went here once during the Big East tournament and the place felt like a Tokyo subway station during rush hour.

When decor beats out food, there's a problem. That's the biggest issue with this place. We went to Tir Na Nog for lunch the other day. The place is very cool looking with a sprawling space and lots of old-style sayings written on the wall and various types of art. It is very welcoming in that sense. The waitress was pleasant enough.
It was the food that was the killer. The beer we had, Killian's, was just okay. Usually it has a nice crisp flavor that peaks in your mouth, but it was just okay. The fish and chips were completely flavorless and greasy. There simply was nothing to it and not even salt could save it! You know it's bad when that is the case. I couldn't even finish it, I was so disgusted with my selection. My BF has the seared grilled tuna, which tasted like it wasn't fresh (like it had been sitting out on the counter for about an hour), and its accompanyments were as equally flavorless as the tuna. I don't know if the cook forgot to season his dishes, but there was nothing good about it at all. As my BF said, you have to be drunk to eat this food.

Not the greatest, but the best non-chain bar near MSG.

I went to the one in Philly. I don't know how we ended up here, or how we got there but it was A LOT of FUN! The crowd, the band, and the atmosphere was one of the best I've seen in a while. It could have been the "laid back" Philly approach. But, the people were sweet as hell, and the band was great.

I used to come here for lunch when I worked nearby a few years ago and this was literally the only place within a few block radius that had tolerable food. The entire area around Penn Station is like a dead zone for decent food, must be all the tourists and Jersey-ites (just kidding Jersey!). Anyway, back in those days they used to make really tasty sandwiches so it was one of my favorite lunch joints in the surrounding vicinity (though not all that cheap). I haven't been back in a few years but last week I decided to stop by for dinner since I was in the area and feeling cold and hungry with no desire to trek across town to find something to eat. Long story short the food was pretty mediocre, though not bad. The place was fairly crowded and we had to wait a couple of minutes for a table to free up. The decor was same as I remember it from years ago, which is to say pretty good. The service was alright, nothing to write home about. All in all a fairly average dining experience, maybe for outside of NY this would be considered "good" but I really don't have much desire to return unless I again find myself stuck in this area, starving and unwilling to travel a short distance to some greener pastures.
