There was something missing from my house. No one took it - it was just never there to begin with.
I rent a 1970s cabin, all natural exposed wood, fireplace, massive deck, loft, orange 5-person sunken bathtub. Oh yeah. I just adore it, but it IS very brown.
I couldn't put my finger on what I could do to make it mine... until I looked up in Z Gallerie one day and saw an item I couldn't leave without. (Those moments are rare.) It was an eight-point buck (as in the deer) trophy carved out of driftwood! I wouldn't be able to put a taxidermied deer up in my house, no, but driftwood, yes! I had to have it, despite it being a little pricey.
Z Gallerie is filled with kitsch and not exactly high end stuff, although things can be a little pricey, and they are definitely fun and attractive items. Pricey, fun, and attractive...
And that started me on turning my cabin into a strange little place filled with instruments, human anatomy prints, parrot coasters, ostrich and peacock feathers, massive floor pillows, Moroccan lanterns.... Sigh, I just love it here.
Uncle Buck, as I like to call him, has started a design revolution.
I was in Z Gallerie, Corte Madera, twice over the past two weeks, i.e., Jan. 2010, after purchasing a sofa there over the phone that I had originally seen at the Berkeley store (they don't work on commission, thus I ended up going with Corte Madera for this particular purchase because it is closer to my West Coast office and within the mileage delivery zone).
When I went to the store in person, a few weeks after the purchase, just to see the sofa again (it hasn't yet been delivered), I was appalled by the so-called customer service at the CM location (vis-a-vis the Berkeley store, which is excellent).
Corte Madera's customer service, i.e., make that: rotten, sour, frowning, "we will make everything as unpleasant for our customers as possible -- that's policy -- attitude is so bad that I refused to buy a desk they had that I loved, deciding instead to give my $$ to another merchant that appreciates my business (in an economic downturn, no less!). Z Gallerie Corte Madera managers, no less, are AWFUL; it's not just one person, either; it's a pervasive attitude. Oh, and I phoned the regional manager in L.A. -- twice; she has not returned my phone messages, and it's been three weeks and two calls/messages.
Too bad, so sad: I have money to spend to furnish a new office, but it certainly is not going to this store. My father was in the furniture manufacturing and sales industry for his entire life (he passed away a year and a half ago). He would be appalled by the attitude in this store. He would say, "That's why the furniture business is in a sharp, permanent decline -- people don't understand the importance of people/customers."
I just got another email from a Z Gallerie customer who is never shopping there again, due to what (she says) is terrible overall customer service, particularly on ordered products. Interesting and a shame they don't seem to care at all about what is a pervasive problem. This chain could be much more successful as the products themselves tend to be kind of cool. But if you're treated terribly, is it worth it. That's the question.

I can't imagine buying anything here. It's as opposite from my style as it could be. 3* for finding customers somewhere.
I think this is one of the coolest places in the Universe. I can always find a great gift.... prices are fantastic.... sales people are very helpful.... If I wanted or needed a part-time job I think I would want to work for them..... They just have a very cool collection of items that can work for almost any style of decor, I love their candle selection They also have some interesting art work that is reasonable priced...... Yup, I must admit..... if we become friends and I get you a gift it might come from Z...... and if I ever worked their part time it would be called Z Whole Pay Check instead of Z Gallerie
Keep an eye out for their sales..... those prices are great...... I am proud to be a sale shopper....its part of the hunt.
This place looks like the storeroom for 80s porn film sets - lots of white leather, chrome, hi-gloss black, faux fur and peacock feathers. Nonetheless, we bought a large sectional couch there the second week in December. It is now February 14th, and still my living room is adorned with sad, saggy, ugly and uncomfortable couches acquired by a long-ago roommate unwilling to get a UHaul when moving out. My point is, WHERE OH WHERE IS MY COUCH?
We were quoted 8-10 weeks for delivery since upholstering the couch in anything beside the stock fabric (tacky brown velour) was a "Special Order". Then out of the blue, they called us last week to say we were misquoted and that all special orders take 10-12 weeks. Ugh, annoyo to the max.
This is my absolute favorite furniture/home decor store in the world. I've already tried to start a registry there...apparently you need a spouse (stupid rule). But if i do set up a registry succesfully it will have EVERY SINLGE freakin thing on it...honestly you could get me the ceramic dog vase from here and I would be happy...obsession can be pathetic.
