4 reviews for YWCA of Minneapolis
YWCA of Uptown, you sure are growing on me. I used to be in love with Midtown because he is surely less-crowded, larger, better equipped than you--and I like my gyms large and well-equipped.
I mean, I was a totally committed woman and I thought I would never stray...so what's the deal with us lately? I keep coming over to visit almost every day, I drop by even when I dont have a lot of time, and here I thought we weren't even that good of friends. I think it's just that Midtown has been a little distant these days and sometimes you seem so inviting. A girl has needs, you know? I've been feeling closer and closer to you and I'm really afraid my feelings are turning into something more serious.
Let's just take it slow and I'll give you a try. If you get really aggressive or start seeing a ton of other girls all of a sudden, I'm not going to stick around and wait in long lines just to use your equipment. I'm telling you that up front so there is no confusion. I'll go right back to Midtown in a second if I catch you treating me wrong. But just for a little while...let's give our love a chance. Shhh...dont tell Midtown-- It'll be our little secret.
This place is a DUMP! For the price they charge, you can get a spa membership at Lifetime Fitness without having to pay additional for parking and classes (as you do at the ywca) and satisfaction of knowing you won't leave with fungus or a cockroach stowed away in your bag. The YWCA prides itself on donating back to the community but they would be doing themselves and their members a better service if they donated a little back to themselves. The equipment is old and never very clean, the walkway had holes in the floor that they 'fixed' it by throwing up some caution tape and all the last I looked, all the clocks were off time (if they can't put effort into that, you know they're not doing ANYTHING).
I tried to overlook the things about it I didn't like when I first joined because I live in Uptown and it's the only gym here but as time went on I found myself hating this gym with a passion. I started shopping around and saw how badly I was being jacked. Like I said, you can pay the same price at Lifetime Fitness but have CLEAN and NEW equipment. They also have CLEAN locker rooms with steams rooms (Y doesn't offer any of this) etc... That said, I didn't want to pay that much for a gym membership so I went to LA Fitness and pay 10 bucks a month. Done. Oh and, the YWCA is part of my insurance plan so they were supposed to credit me 20 bucks each month... never did. And when I asked about it they said "we'll put $20 towards your joining fee when you come back..." Ummmmm that was not part of the deal.
Here's the good news, LA Fitness is building a spa in Calhoun square and it will be half the price of the Y and it will be done summer 2009 HAHAHAHHAA SUCKAS! I can't wait to see them get wiped out - they deserve it. I hate that place.
I'm surprised more people haven't rated the Uptown YWCA. It's fairly popular, being one of the few (if only) gyms in Uptown. Truth is, if there were more gyms in the area, most people probably wouldn't go to this one. For starters it's the same price as any premium gym, but without the perks. the equipment, even the new stuff, is junky and poorly maintained. The locker rooms feel like something you could catch some strange rash in, and the staff, frankly, just don't seem to care. In fact, for a while I thought they were all volunteers. My biggest gripe about this place, however, is that it's filthy. The cardio equipment in particular is disgusting. Sweat, hair and dust cover every machine. They really need to do something about this. But, being the only semi-real gym in Uptown, they probably won't.
i have been a ywca member on and off for 8-9 years. the uptown one is ok, i never have been a huge gym person. now they have a barre class and a center class. both are taught by an instructor named maria fontana who has danced in the NYC ballet and Boston Ballet amoung others. it is equivalent to a zenon class without any extra fees in you are a member. that is right! a FREE class. and really awesome for those of us who love dance. i totally recommend it. if you have some dance experience it will go much better for you, but without you will catch on soon. i must say that my butt looks better now after 3 months of ballet 2-3 times a week!
