Chinese to die for.
We have had terrible luck trying to find decent Chinese food in the suburbs, and when we found Yu's I almost cried! Its a bit of a drive for us, but I'm ALWAYS looking for excuses to go to Schaumburg just so we can eat at Yu's!
The food is FANTASTIC!
Some of my faves:
-Combo Lo-Mein (noodle plate)
-Homemade Noodle platter
-Lemon Chicken
-Beef & Chicken Hunan Style
-Shrimp Fried Rice
I could eat their noodles every day of my life! Gah! soo goooood!
A Chinese restaurant with REAL Chinese people eating there! (gasp)
Its ALWAYS crowded, and the service is, actually, pretty on-par for a REAL Chinese restaurant (have you ever been to China? They don't exactly fawn over the customers)
5 Stars! If I could marry their noodles, I would.
The chinese food is good for Schaumburg.
Pros:
-za jian mian is very good, lots of meats and veggies
-beef brisket and veggie bowl is HUUUUGE-it literally feeds me for a week
-spicy pickled greens fish is not at all spicy but has good flavor
Cons:
-all their american dishes that are meant to be "sweet & sour" are deep fried and covered in pretty much the same orange sauce and comes in varying degrees of orang depending on the name of the dish
-their salt and pepper fried foods all taste like the oil hasn't been changed since they opened the restaurant
-Lo Mein: pretty bland, very standard american chinese noodles, very very oily
Everyone else loves this place..but it's really just because the rest of the chinese food in schaumburg is terrible, and they're too lazy to drive to chinatown to eat actual delicious chinese food. Sorry guys!
When in schaumburg and feel like eating asian food, I say go Korean!
I don't know why people compare Yu's to Panda Express, but try ordering menu items you wouldn't normally order at PE -.-"
My dining party shared eight dishes and all of them were prepared fairly traditionally, and with fresh ingredients. Granted, I don't think any of them were on the English menu, but.. I'm sure the friendly staff might be able to help? The food came out quickly, but then service unfortunately slowed as the dining room filled.
This is our go-to restaurant whenever we're in the suburbs. It's always busy, the food is great and well-priced. The service is a little bit slow but it's worth the wait. I'd definitely recommend the crab rangoon.
Yu's has good Mandarin food, but I must admit that the quality of food and service has gone downhill since its heyday. Back when it was located in the corner of the Jewel stripmall down the street, and even when it first moved to its current location, it was THE place for Chinese food in the northwest suburbs. That being said, it's still a solid choice. Their noodle dishes are the highlight of the menu in my opinion, especially the noodle platter and noodle soup. The rainbow chow mein isn't as good as it used to be, but I still get it on occasion for old time's sake.
When we can't make it to Chinatown, my boyfriend and I get take-out at Yu's. (We've never eaten in the restaurant.) It was recommended to me by my mom, who works in the healthcare field. Apparently drug reps would bring Yu's in for lunch for her office, and they loved it! My Mom's favorite was a breaded sesame chicken that had noodles. I've had it twice, the first being a leftover, which was good. The second time, I was disappointed at how much breading was on the chicken - there was a ratio of 2:1 of breading to chicken.
My favorite dish so far is the sesame beef - while I love savory, it's on the sweeter side.
A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I saw that they had beef and chinese broccoli - I did a double take. REAL Chinese broccoli?! I'm addicted to Chinese broccoli (moreso steamed with oyster sauce), so to have FINALLY found a suburban restaurant that serves it was heaven. Seriously.
I agree with another writer that states that it is like Panda Express...I will give YU's a little more credit the food is a little better.
I grew up in this area and YU's before it moved to it's current location used to be in the strip center near Jewel and Osco off of Roselle Rd. When it was there the food and the service were so much better than it is today.
1. The food is mediocre
2. The service if you can call it that is really bad. The waitstaff is quite rude and the same goes with the host/hostess
3. The resturaunt is dirty. Everything feels sticky and unclean.
4. It always feels like they want to get you in and get you the heck out....I always feel rushed by the staff there.
When I go home to visit my parents I try to steer my parents anywhere besides this place, they are Korean und unfortunately they like thier Chinese food and since this is the biggest this is the one they know. Just because there is a line that goes out the door doesn't mean the food is good...some McDonalds are full of people and as we all know the food is not that good at the Golden Arches.
....Biggest doesn't almost mean the best, this is oh so true here....
I have mixed feelings about Yu's. It is very busy and it often does seem (as others have noted) that they really want to turn the tables. I've seen it at lunch or dinner. Once you get your drinks refilled when the food comes, you're done for beverages, (including water) no matter how long you stay. Once you pay for your meal, you will not see the waitstaff again. That is my biggest beef with Yu's. You get a definite feeling that they want you to eat and go. I wouldn't call the staff rude, just indifferent. The last time I was in, there were Caucasian greeters, so I think ownership or management may have changed. Based upon the reviews, something has definitely changed.
The food, to me, is generally very good. Good quantity, very tasty. They apparently have a Chinese menu with items not found on the English menu because I have seen Asian customers get dishes that I simply did not recognize. Their Asian clientele is significant, so something must be right, although my palate is more than satisfied by the Americanized menu.
I eat Chinese food about once per year. I generally don't like it because 1. It is usually super greasy and heavy - automatic food coma... and 2. I used to eat Chinese at least once per week in college and can't even smell it now without feeling sick.
However, I was in the area with some girlfriends and we were hungry. I had heard that Yu's was the best Chinese restaurant in the Chicago area... so I hesitantly agreed : /
We sat, looked at the extensive menu and ordered one of the following: combination fried rice (shrimp, pork and chicken), Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce (my favorite) and the garlic chicken entree. We were very full a half hour later and had lots of leftovers.
The food was actually very good. It wasn't too greasy and the vegetables were very fresh. I wasn't a fan of the fried rice, but the two other dishes were great.
This is a super casual restaurant. It's like a diner... but with Chinese food.
I like Chinese food, this place used to be a favorite, but either it's lost a step or I've moved a few flights up.
Really just ok.
Some days, I'd give this place a 3.5. Today, it gets a 4.5.
The service was attentive, food fast and delicious. The only problem was that they charged us for a soup that they never gave us, although we ordered it. No biggie - they took it off the bill.
Honey Walnut Shrimp - one of the best in Illinois. Not too breaded, not too thick. YUMMERS!
We were actually seated 5 minutes after our whole party arrived. That is a RARE occasion on a Sunday afternoon. When we left, there must have been 20 people waiting to be seated. That is extremely common here so be prepared to wait.
Awesome food, Service sometimes too fast. Hot braised fish is AMAZING!!!
There are items not on the menu (only for regulars friendly w/ the staff): Popcorn chicken is one humble suggestion.
OK So I'm not a big Chinese food fan to begn with but: I walked in looking for my group, nobody helped me, no one seemed to care I'd never been there before and had no idea where group seating was. The host said he didn't know and could not stop whatever he was doing to help me. I could have walked out for all he cared. The food was tasteless, the tad pai is better at noodles & co! The server didn't care that one pesron didn't get the right soup. The servers didn't care about anyone. The pork was spicy but other than that no flavor.
WOW, I would never compare Yu's to Panda Express! When I think quality and quantity, I think Yu's. We order from or eat at Yu's at least once a week. Now, the Garlic Chicken is not up my alley, but the Chicken with Garlic Sauce is top notch. Don't make the mistake of ordering the Garlic Chicken unless you prefer dark meat. The Chicken with Garlic Sauce is quality white meat chicken with a fantastic sauce.
We also enjoy Confucius Concoction. This is an appetizer for at least two people. I would encourage you to share the serving for two with three or more people unless you don't intend to eat your entree. Yu's is also willing to substitute. We don't love beef sticks, but really enjoy the shrimp toast and they will swap the two for us every time.
The shrimp is properly cleaned (unfortunately, not a given at all other restaurants) and always tasty.
We enjoy the noodle bowls that they are known for and find that there is plenty of meat included. We always have leftovers.
Maybe a bit pricey, but well worth it for a quality meal.
Yu's! YU are one reason why I wished I still lived in the 'burbs. And there are not that many reasons, believe me!
Yu's is groovy because the food is great and so are the prices. Portions are giiiigantic, so you can easily split a dish (we always do ) and an appetizer.
You can't go wrong with anything here. Service is hit or miss, but because their food is so good I am not going to pitch a fit about it.
White folks, this one's for you. Just kidding. I love it. It's like Panda Express but sit down. It has the same crazy long lines and wait except you're in a restaurant. Yu's is always packed. We had our college reunion here and for 13 people, we each spend $10 for dinner including tip. Seriously can't beat that.
The jajang myun is good but they don't have kimchi. Bummer. The jampong is good too. All else is well...like Panda. :) Oh, and service is non-existent.
Yeah...what Don K. said.....
This was my first (and unfortunately last) time at Yu's. I was also very unfortunate enough to have experienced the Garlic Chicken. Now...whenever I try a new Chinese restaurant, I always order the simple dishes first (steamed rice, fried rice, eggroll, sweet and sour...). My way of thinking is, if you can't get the simple stuff right, I'm not going to go outside my realm of comfort. So you know....you're a Chinese restaurant....can you cook the rice properly? The only Garlic I found in the Garlic Chicken was the name. I cannot deal with dark meat. Dark meat was what I got...and the sauce slimed everything on the plate. I was not happy. So basically I ate water chestnuts with rice for dinner-yay! Other members of my party had pretty much the same experience. And the waiter......I've never seen a waiter SAUNTER around the way this guy did....he was CLEARLY not interested in ANYthing. I actually liked the decor of the place, it was packed (but it was after church on a Sunday), you can see the cooks making the food behind the wall-to-wall window and the owner (very classy older lady) came around to every table and made conversation, which I love.
Well...I am done with Chinese food......
terrible, terrible service.
We were seated right away, but didn't get a server until 20 minutes after. And when we did he didn't greet us at all, said something along the lines of whattya want and didnt offer us something to drink. RUDE.
There's not a lot of variety but still good. It's like Joy Yee's but more expensive. When I went, my boyfriend and I got the beef and broccoli, and some dish " Dragon and Pheonix" which consisted of chicken and chicken in their homemade sauce, which was really good.
Yu's is delicious! The best Chinese I have ever had! I order the vegetable fried rice and the schezwan eggplant. I don't like the vegetarian noodle platter...it is bland. If you do decide to order it make sure you add tofu that is deep fried. I think that the owners changed a year ago and that really changed the food quality, but my family complained and the rice is back to the original kind. The wait can get up to 40 minutes on the weekends so be prepared.
You know a chinese restaurant is good if more than half the customers are asian and if there's always a line going out the door. I've been here many many times whenever I'm in the Woodfield area (even had my rehearsal dinner here!) and ventured out again last night. I tried the Peking noodle after reading the great reviews on yelp and though it was the best jajamien I've had, I prefer the noodle platter for it's lighter and spicier sauce. Every dish I've ever had here has been excellent. Among my favorites that I usually order in addition to a newby dish: honey walnut shrimp, mongolian beef, noodle platter.
Food- awesome- i wouldn't say better than chinatown (specifically Lao Sze Chuan) but I dont know anywhere that has noodles like Yu's, so fresh and chewy- i love it!
Service- i guess it's hard to be service-oriented when you're always running around crazy. the waitstaff have always tried to be attentive but it is sometimes hard to flag them down when they're serving dozens of other tables as well.
Price- have gone up a bit it seems, but that doesn't seem to stop the flow of customers. comparably priced.
I gotta hit this place at least 3 times whenever I come back home to the CHI!
Yu's not horrible, let me start by stating that.
However, when everyone's raving about it, I figured they may be on to something.
I had given Yu's 2-3 tries and frankly, it is all show and OK food.
I know lots of Chinese restaurants have been modified for the American tastebuds but even with this acceptance, I've never been blown away by it.
Each time I visit, the service is lackluster. But I've come to expect not to expect an all-out red carpet welcome from them.
Update: I found out from a server that even if you request the noodle platter to be spicy, the chefs won't do it because they typically make a big batch of it at once since it's one of the more popular dishes. So what we did was mix the spicy sauce that comes with the potstickers into the noodle platter and it was AWESOME...taste just like how they used to make it. Yeah, it sucks that they don't do special requests on that dish but I will swallow my pride because Yu's is so good and I don't mind altering my own dish!
I'm giving Yu's 5 stars because although the noodle platter isn't as good as I remember it (used to be nice and spicy and now it's a little bland), their honey walnut shrimp definitely makes up for it. That shrimp is one of the dishes that I crave quite often and I wish Yu's wasn't in the burbs so I can go there more times. Their potstickers, xiao ping pork and Mongolian beef are solid too...I've never had a dish I haven't liked there.
sucks that the old owners opened up a new place, htis place has gone down. they skimp on ingredients and quantity but maintain the same prices. goodbye yus mandarin, hello [insert name of new chinese restaurant over on golf]
I have a confession to make. Hands down, this is probably my most favorite Chinese restaurant in Illinois. Being Asian and being a food snob, that's saying alot. Their food is consistently good, it's clean, and most importantly you can see the kitchen and the cooks cooking your food. I've been eating here since I was a small child, and I am always peeved when my family chooses another Chinese restaurant to eat at. I think it is because of the crowd issue.
This restaurant is always packed to the gills. It's worth the wait, and I've never had an issue with service. Upon entering you are greeted with the mouthwatering aromas of ginger, garlic and other Chinese spices. The restaurant is very pretty and they do not let their furniture and decor go to dis-repair.
I get very greedy when I eat here. I don't care if there is only 2 of us. I always insist on ordering their Confucious Concoction. It consists of shrimp toast, crab rangoon, BBQ spare ribs, beef sticks, and egg rolls. They also have an incredible Velvet corn soup with real crabmeat that is to die for. We always order at least 2 entrees as well. My husband chose the crispy duck, and I ordered Beef with Scallops. The portions are too big to finish and we always have leftovers. I was so tempted to order a Ginger and garlic dungeness crab as well...but I was trying to behave. Next time...there will always be a next time....
My friends and I used to hit this place late night when we outgrew and could afford more than the late night coffee shops. This is a great place to go to catch up with friends.
They offer their menus in English and also feature a Chinese menu.
They are well known for their handmade noodles, and you can actually call ahead to find out what time they are making it so that you can watch this incredible show.
This is average Chinese food. They have a mixture of American Chinese food and Korean Chinese food. The service is very good for a Chinese restaurant which probably explains why there are a bunch of Caucasians. There's a picture of George Bush (not the W one) with the owners which also explains my previous point.
I know of another Chinese restaurant in Falls Church, VA (near DC) with a picture of George Bush. So I'm guessing that it justifies that if it's good enough for a former president, then it must good enough for me.
George Bush likes Chinese food.
This place could be really packed, sometimes more than 40 minutes.
Food is really good, one of the best in the suburbs.
Open kitchen, you can see the chefs cook on fire through the glass window.
Service is poor, too busy to answer your questions or take your orders. Always feel rushed there.
Don't go there if you want to have a romantic relaxed dinner.
Man it gets crowded in here. But it's worth the wait. Lots of meat and veggies, not so much rice. (Where I prefer to have a bit more rice, my husband is happy with more meat.) And it's not too salty either!
Servers are nice, they have big tables with the lazy susans so you can share dishes and not be passing everything around the table constantly.
This is my second time to Yu's and I absolutely LOVE it! It is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Chicagoland area. The general manager, Wayne, is so awesome! He is the really tall Chinese man. You cannot miss him :) He is really attentive and kind.
We ordered a couple of dishes:
-La Jang myung
-Ja jang myung
-Honey shrimp w/almonds
-Crab Rangoon
-Chicken wings
Everything was great! I especially loved the honey shrimp, which was delish! I definitely recommend everyone to visit if they are in the area. It is always EXTREMELY busy but well worth it!
I'd call it a hidden treasure, but judging by the large crowd (of Americans and Asians alike), there's nothing hidden about it.
It is a kick-ass Chinese restaurant, in a strip mall a couple miles down from Woodfield (on Golf Rd., 1/4 mile east of Roselle - look for the Outback Steakhouse). Went here after recalling Yelp reviews, and I wasn't disappointed.
My hub and I had excellent meals. My orange chicken was one of the better versions I've had: tender and nicely flavored. He had Mongolian Three Ingredients: slices of beef, chicken and shrimp sauteed with onions. Both of our dishes were light on oils, not too spicy. Just plain tasty.
There's even dinner theatre: a glass-enclosed display kitchen lets you watch chefs prepare meals. With the bustling and the flames shooting up from the woks, it's like Iron Chef.
Dining room is spacious but the noise level of a lively crowd is moderate (good if you have, say, a loud child). Service was spot-on despite the extreme busy-ness on a weekend night. Our dinner for two was $36; quite reasonable.
No complaints - we'll be back. I hate long waits, so we'll go early for dinner (or I'll go for lunch).
BTW, besides the regular (in English) menu, there is a menu written entirely in Chinese characters. Does anyone know if it's different than the American menu?
Great Chinese, and probably the best in Schaumburg. They have homemade noodles and excellent fried rice (I never have fried rice, but I do from Yu's or Tsukasa of Tokyo). I love their moo shu and garlic chicken. For take-out, you'll probably drop $30 on two entrees, fried rice, and soup. Not bad at all for good Chinese.
It even makes for good leftovers.
Chinese leftovers you say? No way. The rice gets dry and the main dishes don't taste the same...but wait. Yu's Mandarin's different. I don't know what it is, but somehow I was able to have leftovers and the rice didn't get dry as hell on me. Even my rice doesn't last more than two days.
Maria C. - It sounds like you had a rice porridge, congee, or "zuk" (pronounced sort of like "tjok", roll the T and J together). My grandmother makes this stuff all the time. Personally, I'm not a fan (maybe because it's *too* authentic for my americanized taste buds), but my caucasian girlfriend likes it.
Much of my family is from Illinois, and whenever we have visitors, this is where we take them. Growing up seeing my parents, grandparents, and aunts bring people here, I'm now the one bringing my friends and guests to Yu's. And for good reason. You get a bit of entertainment from seeing the cooks light fires in the kitchen, but the real excitement is on the menu.
My one Chinese friend swears by the noodles, which are excellent, but you really can't go wrong with anything. He's a big fan of the hot & spicy squid and the noodle platter, but pretty much everyone I know is all about the walnut shrimp. It costs a couple bucks more than the other dishes, but with damn good reason.
The only slight gripe is that I usually end up having to ask for more rice (I was just brought up rationing out the rice generously), but you don't get charged for it and it comes out quickly.
Good restaurant for lunch always busy. They have a good selection of americanized Chinese food. Around 30 dishes to choose from very fast service allow you to get in and out during lunch. They serve complimentary tea and the food seems clean. Nice surrounds and the kitchen is open closed in by glass so you can see them cooking. I have not come here for dinner however for a lunch spot I give them 4 stars.
For people who don't know any better, by all means eat at Yu's Mandarin. Big piles of food drenched in brown sauce for the benefit of pasty white folk who grew up thinking LaChoy was Chinese. Words can not begin to describe how much I hate this place. Do yourself a favor, drive to Arlington Heights and go to the Asian Bistro - it kicks the snot outta Yu's. Or, if you can't handle that, go to McDonald's and save some money.
Great food, clean excellent service.
Try the Noodle Platter : Spicy noodles with Seafood
Mangolian beef: Slices of marinated beef, served on a sizzling platter.
Chinese Broccoli with oyster sauce.
Yu's got some decent Chinese food, I always like their noodles(seafood noodle soup, black bean paste noodles..), very tasty! I went there couple times for lunch and dinner, they have some authentic Chinese food in their Chinese menu, big portion, restaurant is pretty big, always busy, I still go there once a while when I crave for Chinese food and noodles.
It refreshing to eat ethnic Chinese food. I'm so sick of the pseudo, salted up, MSG Chinese you get at other places. The more I eat here, the more I like it.
The food is excellent. We order the spicy vegetable noodles and the Sesame beef. The service is sort of charming. It's not attentive, but charming. I like going to a Chinese restaurant where the servers are Chinese speaking people. I guess it's a cultural thing.
The restaurant design is very plain. I really wouldn't mind if they charged a couple bucks more to update the place. Although, the glass wall into the kitchen is worth going to see. It's cool.
I don't understand some of the marginal reviews? If you can get better Asian, in the Northwest suburbs, please tell me the restaurant.
UPDATE:
I had to downgrade Yu's. We've been going to the Asian Bistro and like it more. Yu's is well run, but they were half pushing us out the door last time and the ambiance is sort of Greek diner. I also think they need more vegetarian dishes on the menu.
When you go into any kind of ethnic restaurant, the first indication of quality is if the people of that ethnicity are actually eating there. That is what tipped me off to this suburb hidden gem.
The service is excellent and makes up for the long wait. Sit at the bar and have a Mai Tai while you wait.
Everything I have tasted in this restaurant has been excellent, but if you never had JaJang Mion (Pekin Noodles) it is a must. You cannot go wrong with any of the appetizers and make sure to try the hot tea.
Go there for lunch for unbelievable prices.
Best Chinese-Korean food ever!
The owners are Chinese but grew up in Korea. So they know what Koreans like! They have a separate Korean menu.
Whenever I'm in the area, I always make sure to stop in to get the spicy noodle platter! I also love the Szechwan style prawns and the Korean sweet and sour beef or pork (a clear sauce, not red or pink). The Mabo tofu is also good.
Go with a lot of people so you can order a bunch of different things (or go by yourself and order just as much!!!)
Sooooo goood...too bad they only have one location in Schaumburg.
It is always crowded, so be prepared to wait.
Yu's is honestly my #1 favorite restaurant of the suburbs. My whole (hardcore Chinese) family is a big fan of Yu's, even though it's always packed to the brim--you know it's good, then, right?
The best best best dishes (in my opinion) are the walnut shrimp (NO other place does it like Yu's, seriously, take my word on this one) and the Peking noodles. The noodles are homemade at the restaurant and sometimes you can even catch the noodle show while you're eating. The staff is good, although sometimes you may have trouble getting water refills depending on how busy the place is at the time.
Parking is a bit hard to find on the weekends though, as Yu's shares a parking lot with a few other businesses and an Outback. I wish they would just expand the parking situation there by putting a garage behind the strip mall or something, but whatever.
I will always, always go back to Yu's whenever I'm in Schaumburg.
