I bought four different kinds of cake yesterday to try out before buying the cake for our wedding. These are the four ones I got:
Green Tea-Cake - the Green Tea flavor is not very obvious. You can taste a little bit, but it's very bland. It wasn't our favorite
Tiramisu Cake - Although the flavor is not like the real Tiramisu, I'd say this one is my second favorite of all the ones we tried yesterday. The taste is very smooth in the mouth, It's almost like the healthier version of Tiramisu. I can't really taste the mascarpone cheese in here, but the flavor was definitely there.
Mocha Cake - the flavor is just OK for me. Nothing stands out
Fruit Cake (Sponge cake with fruit filling inside). - I must say from all of the ones I tried, this one is still my favorite. They have fruit filling based on the season. My favorite is Strawberry.
I must go back again to try the other flavors they have before we finalize our wedding cake flavor. Wish me all the best...
Oo.. and by the way, did I tell you that the price is extremely affordable compare to other bakeries around?
So we tried the chocolate, coffee, strawberry, and green tea cake. Yummy House is okay, but I've definitely had better...... not bad tasting, but it just didn't wow me.
Loses two stars for poor customer service. The counter people need to work on people skills. Sometimes, good service does go a looooong way.
This place is so dangerous for my ever-expanding bottom.
I've eaten their pastries from the kiosk in Uwajimaya but today I stopped in the store for the first time. Everything is so white, fluffy, and creamy. This is not a "rustic" type bakery.
I love love the cream horns.
Today I stopped in for a cream horn but the lady must have misheard me and gave me a cream bun instead. I didn't notice until I got to the car and opened the bag. My GOD. It's a coconut cream bun the size of your head. Like a good little piggy I ate the whole thing. Now I have to come with an excuse for my girlfriend about why I'm not starving for dinner.
The counter people were very nice and I got a good look at a couple of cakes that were being purchased and they looked delish. I'm sure they use copious amounts of butter and/or crisco and white flour to make their treats so that's why they are so white and fluffy.
My only saving grace is that they aren't really very convenient for me so it's a rare treat.
This is the boyfriend and my favorite Chinese bakery. He likes the pineapple buns (which are pretty tasty!) and I love the sponge cupcakes. The sponge cupcakes are so light, airy, and just sweet enough that it's perfect. So perfect that you can scarf down about 5 of them in one sitting without realizing it....not that I, ahem, have ever done that.
We also come here for moon cakes and all the specialty stuff you need for Asian holidays. It's a great place and we've always been treated well...even when I do the ordering (the boyfriend speaks Canto, so at other establishments he definitely gets treated better than I do).
Overall, I'm a huge fan of this place and I always perk up when we're near because I know the boyfriend's not going to say no when I mention dropping in here.
The second stop in my search for a quality Chinese bakery that day, I was both relieved and disappointed that they mostly have a different selection of goods from Mon Hei. Relieved because it meant not having to decide between two supposedly great bakeries, but then disappointed because Yummy House didn't impress me that much. Having bought a few too many items at Mon Hei already, I only picked up a custard fruit tart and two BBQ pork buns here.
The fruit tart was quite tasty, but I wish it was larger, and had more fruit, both in terms of quantity and variety. The BBQ pork buns were slightly disappointing, mostly being empty and bready, lacking in actual meat filling. My standard for BBQ pork buns is probably too high though, having grown up on the amazing BBQ pork buns of this one store down in Southern California that, unfortunately, closed or moved years ago.
Prices are okay, and the owner is friendly, and they take credit! I'll have to nab one of the egg tarts next time, since I mistook Mon Hei for the bakery that had the Portuguese-style egg tarts.
Edit (08/30/09): Not changing my rating, so adding more comments here. Popped in again today to try out one of their egg tarts and cream puffs. Either I missed them again, or people are confused about what Portuguese-style egg tarts really are, because I only saw the regular ones. Slightly better than Mon Hei's, but still quite sub-par. Their custard cream puff is good though: they do custard quite well, so I'll probably stick to that from now on.
Awesome-ness...
went in for a Giant pork bun at 9:45am before my conference and it was friggin delish.
i pay onry 1 dollah, fiddy cent... understand-uh? berry cheep!
It'd be too easy to use the adjective "yummy," in this review so I'm going to refrain from it. It seems expected of me and I'd like to subvert expectations.
They make a pastry called the "Sah-Yung" and it is a deep-fried ball of dough that resembles a cream puff (but hold the cream...) generously rolled in sugar and the inside of which is light and fluffy. They call it the Chinese Donut, which is very fitting. (But don't confuse it with the Chinese Donut served with congee though)
If reading the words "cream puff" made you want one then you should try the cream bun with shredded coconut. But beware though --- it was too creamy for me. Just looking at it - it looks absolutely delectable, so very pretty. However, when consumed the cream coats your mouth with a "I think I just put a stick of butter in my mouth" feeling. However once we scraped off most of the cream, it was really good because the bun itself is really soft and sweet.
I highly recommend getting the Sah-Yung, but pass on the cream bun with shredded coconut. Oh screw it, this place is yummy.
Yummy House Bakery has so many yummy treats! And, like others have said their egg tarts are great. They also have Portuguese egg tarts too and they're delicious. But my favorite treat here is their sponge cake. They're pretty sizeable and only $1.20. Recently I discovered that they have green tea and coffee flavored ones in addition to plain. The green tea sponge cake is now my top choice when I go there. Other notable treats I like are their barbeque pork buns, fruit cake (by the slice) and mocha rolls.
A bonus star goes to the staff. They are always really nice and helpful when I come in.
I loved their sponge cake. It think it is the best sponge cake in Seattle.
Other bakery products are all right, my family order birthday cakes from them every once in a while.
During childhood years, looking through the display case of some local bakeries brought a feeling of drooling charm. Yummy House cakes bring back that feeling.
The Goodies:
* The Mango & Fresh Fruit (kiwi, melon, strawberry) cakes are outstanding and highly recommended. I have eaten several throughout the years; and the fruit has always been fresh and the cake has always been moist, light, and fluffy. I have tried fruit cakes at other Asian bakeries, and Yummy House is definitely top.
* The Fruit Custard Tarts & Fruit Cream Tarts (I don't recall the official name) are very tasty, and make the perfect sized desserts after a Chinese food dinner.
* The Sponge Cakes are super light and fluffy, and perfect for those who don't like desserts too sweet.
The Service:
* The service has always been professional and friendly.
* I have made cake orders over the phone, and the cakes were made perfectly.
The Setting:
* There are a few tables to kick back at.
* Parking can be tough in China-town. If the parking-spot-fishing is tough, I'd just park at Uwajimaya (there's something I would want to purchase anyways).
Over the past few years I've tasted consistently top quality belly bulgers from Yummy House. For Yummy House cakes I'd turn down Krispy Kreme, traditional cakes, and even those butter-dripping elephant ears that those over-priced fairs. The dessert porn at Yummy House is good; and it won't have you feeling dirty & guilty afterwards.
I noticed that most everyone on here is losing their minds over egg tarts here. And I'll be honest- I didn't even know what an egg tart was. So when I found myself in the international district the other day, it was on my list of must-do's: Buy and eat an egg tart at Yummy House.
It was sweet and eggy and so delicious. I'm officially in the egg tart fan club now, hooray! I can't bring myself to give this more than 3 stars though, since later on in the same day I bought an egg tart at Duk Li for half the price, and it was tastier. o.o
Yummy House Bakery has inspired me to try out all the egg tarts in the greater Seattle area (or at least the ones I can get my hands on) and make a yelp list to guide fellow yelpers. Here's my take:
Crust: 4/5: could be a little flakier. Gimme some more butta. But seriously, butter is the solution to all problems pastry-related.
Filling: 3.5/5 Nice and custardy, but a little too "thin" for my taste. I like them thick, almost pudding-like texture. Could use a teensy bit more sugar but otherwise excellent.
Price: $1.10. Reasonable. I use my spare change here for the tarts.
The place was clean and bright, the counter-lady (and owner?) very anxious to make us happy, the warm sponge cakes to die for (I had the plain but plan on hanging out there until I have experienced a pan of green tea and the other flavors. So eggy. It was just sweet enough to taste good, but not leave me feeling guilty and worse than before I ate it. I imagine it would be the perfect base for simple whipped cream and blackberries.
I sampled each of my three friends selections and, though very tasty, paled in comparison to my beloved Spongey the Spongecake.
Plus, I LOVE the little dessert models in the case - they are made out of terry washcloths, and yet appetizing - so cute! The counterperson said they were made in-house. I want some!
For my grandma's birthday dinner party with an estimated number of 80 guests, I purchased a full sheet cake and a 1/4 sheet cake at the recommendation of the bakery. I think the person who helped me was the owner because I see her everytime I go, but I'm not positive. I bought this much cake because I'm a huge fan of chinese cake and I always prefer more than not enough.
Well, it turned out that there were only 70 guests and after a 10 course chinese dinner, there wasn't much room for cake. Even though I ate two slices myself and pawned a hugh slice off on a wide-eyed kid, there was more than 1/4 of the sheet cake left and we hadn't even touched the 1/4 sheet cake that I had gotten in addition to the full sheet. The remainder of the full sheet cake went home with my cousins who are huge fans of cake and the 1/4 sheet was sent home with my grandma who lives in a nursing home. My mom, who visited her the next day, said there was no cake left the following day.
Lessons from this story? The cake they make here is good! Sometimes, you can have too much cake, but it's so good that people will take it home and eat it for you. After a 10 course dinner, people can't really eat a lot of cake (with some exceptions -- like me), so a full sheet would be plenty for 100.
Side notes for those who are pondering coming to this bakery:
1) The chinese cake with fresh fruit is good.
2) The tiramisu cheese cake is good. A little bit sweeter than chinese cake, but tasty. Less of a coffee flavor compared to other tiramisu I have had though.
3) The chinese cake with mango is good, although a bit difficult to cut without messing up the cake a bit because of all the mango slices decorating the outside of the cake.
4) I'm also a big fan of the day old buns that others have mentioned. For a mere $3, they give you 5 buns. Although a day old, they're still good for a few more days.
I love Yummy House Bakery! Not only is it literally a hop, skip and jump away from work but it's incredibly cheap. I have enjoyed the BBQ pork bun, green tea sponge cake, hot dog bun, egg tart, sausage bun, beef curry bun and some yuan yang to wash it all down with.
No worries. I didn't try them ALL at the same time. That sounds a little too ambitious for my taste buds. But seeing as how most are under $1.60, at least I know my wallet wouldn't go bust...just my tummy!
I'm not into sweets much. Actually, sugar mostly makes me sick and nauseous but the buns here (especially the ones with meat), are so filling and delicious that I take the risk.
I'm risky.
Like a mullet.
Their sponge cakes and rolls are to die for!
Baked goods are sinful. There should be a law against it! We should put them all on an island and put a big electrified fence around it. Why?!!!!!! So I can live on this island and have it all for myself!! Hahahahaha!!
Yummy House Bakery is yummy for the tummy and makes you nom nom nom all the way home! Egg custard, freakish looking sponge cupcakes, Chinese donuts, cream puffs, beef curry buns, bbq pork buns, swiss rolls....all went into our box. A few more slipped into the box as well but I certainly didn't mind!
Prices are great and the bakers are really nice. Some places like this get impatient with the uninitiated but not here. The bakery is small and does one thing extremely well. Make yummy baked goods! I know they are doing fine because I've been to this place years ago before my Yelping days. Their quality is just as I remember. Stop in at Yummy and reward your tummy!
In our short trip to Seattle we came here twice-- that's how good it is. I've never had a better sponge cake. Thinking about it is giving me cravings. They have flavors like chocolate, mocha and green tea that I've never seen before. I've tried them all -and a taro bun and strawberry cake. All super good. Extra bonus stars for having such great service too. I normally don't expect much from a Chinese establishment, so this was quite a surprise. I had already paid for mine but the lady offered to get us some fresh warm ones right out of the oven such service is usually unheard of in Chinese establishments.
Finally, a place that lives up to it's name.
Seriously, though... Yummy House is the best Hong Kong style bakery in Seattle, and one of my personal happy places. All the classics are here, and in fine form. (Dai pai dong milk tea? Check. Pineapple buns? Check. Swiss rolls? Check.)
The place can be a little intimidating for people not used to such things as ham & cheese buns, but I assure you, it's well worth it being a little adventurous. Try a sausage bun (effectively a Chinese pig-in-a-blanket) and yuanyang (milk tea and coffee) for a cheap, delicious, and newbie friendly breakfast.
I ordered a fresh mango and mixed fruit cake for a birthday and it was awesome! I was suspicious of the ingredients because the price was so reasonable but the owner assured me they used real butter and no hydrogenated oil. There was a little confusion because I went to pick it up at the Uwajimaya Food Court because I needed to go down the street to their other bakery. When I arrived, the owner did a beautiful job of writing Happy Birthday Samantha on the cake with frosting. We ate it at The Triple Door on Sunday salsa night. The staff there was kind enough to refrigerate it for us and bring it out later with plates, napkins, and utensils. Everyone (including myself) loved it, I mean, REALLY loved it. The cake was so light, moist, and fresh, we had no problem getting up and dancing after eating it. Damn, I wish I had some right now.
I ordered an 10" sponge cake, but because my summer quarter was really busy, I kept changing my pick up date several times, and they were really nice about it. They also told me that they made me a new one. I felt really bad.
Anyways, my favorite is the custard cake. The taro is pretty good too. Definitely one of those bakeries you can't get over with
Out of egg tarts by 4pm on a Thursday.. I was disappointed.. more sad than anything! The Taro bubble tea was ick! The tapioca just didn't seem right, I went across the street and went to Oasis and got my Taro drink instead. I gave it 2 stars only because the cakes were good.. otherwise..
I'm a sad panda!
You know- you'd think a place named Yummy House might be kinda weird if you disect the components- but it's just sweet. When you think of cake or baked goods- why wouldn't you want sweetness?
I really enjoy coming here- we've gotten two brithday cakes here this year. Everything is fresh and tasty. they also serve tea and ice cream in conjunction with the fabulous baked goods. Very casual, happy place.
When I think of planning a special party I think about how the dinner would go with their cake. Please enjoy yourself- check out yummy house.
I haven't seen such a tantalizing array of pastries since England or Japan. Delicious. Very fresh. Décor is so-so but that doesn't matter.
I like this place. There were a few old Chinese guys chillin' when I went in to pick up a cake for a friend, but my co-workers got me one for my birthday, it had fresh mango slices and fruit in it.
The frosting is great, it's not overly sweet like American frosting which is ... let's just say your teeth will rot out of your head. Anyway, the cake itself is light, airy and fluffy. The taste is subtle, but with the fresh fruit in it, I wouldn't order a cake from anywhere else. They sell a lot of other pastry items, some savory and some sweet, but I recommend you go in and check it out.
it is a little on the expensive side, but for what you get, it's pretty tasty.

thank god for the mixed day old buns they have. I'd go hungry for days w/o this. they're $3 and you get the "variety." I always hope for the ham and corn one, as I discovered is delicious. But, I reckon there's potential to turn into a beached whale right quick. . .
Two things I buy here... egg tart & sponge cake!
They have a tendency to run out of egg tart in the evening (at least you know they'll only sell you fresh pastries!). I also love how big their sponge cakes are. This is one of places I have to stop by whenever I visit the international district.
And yes.. they do accept credit cards.
Yum! Their Butterfly Crisp pastry is like a giant, fresh Genji pie and it tastes reeeally good :D
Yummy indeed!
Best place to get flan in Seattle - whoda thunk it?
Chinatown bakeries like this are a not easy to come by and few can replicate the success that Yummy House has gained over the last few years. The baked items are well protected (important for those annoying flies), tasty, full of variety, and very inexpensive. Dim Sum treats are not the only thing that drives this engine as they feature actual desserts such as napoleons, lemon cakes, fruit pies, and even an impressive batch of bubble tea mixes.
During the weekend this place can be so crowded that its out of control. Most people who come here know that the items are most fresh during the early morning and afternoon. The crowd dies down but they're not so apt to making more egg tarts or specialty cakes after the early evening. Thats when bubble tea is best.
It wasn't until we were walking around the Intl District today that I realized that the Yummy House in Uwajimaya had a separate store location. Of course, I also did not know that the one in Uwajimaya was called Yummy House. Why? Because cakes and goodies are at eye level so I could care less what the name is. However, that was before Yelp.
I don't know what it is about Chinese pastries that make them sooooo good. Perhaps it could be because they are light and you feel like you can just keep eating it and eating...Their cakes don't have a richness that makes you full and not want to eat. My kids also love it and any time they eat fruit, even on cake, makes me happy.
Our favorites here are the chocolate and mocha rolls. Those pillowy sponge cakes, and any of their fruit cake slices. I think I would be in trouble if I bought anything more than that. The people here are also friendly and now I can go to their actual store, next time we are here.
Buying these treats with the kids really brings back memories of how my mom use to buy me cakes just like these...Like mother,,,like sons!
I got my wedding cake here and it was a hit! Plus it didn't cost as much as the other bakeries charged. They deliver your cake in pieces and assemble it on site. They also have a bunch of goodies too. Try the coconut buns or the ham, cheese, and onion bun. Stay away from their fruit drinks (bubble teas) and coffees though (acid and cream don't mix well). Otherwise, stick to the stuff the pastries.
Good For: fruit cake, cheap wedding cakes, pastries
Bad For: coffee, bubble tea
How could you not go to a place called "Yummy House"? It's just funny! Usually when I'm shopping in Chinatown/Uwajimaya I stop here for a BBQ pork bun, or curried beef. They're good and cheap... easy choice.
Overall: Not very impressive
I know, I know the reviews for Yummy House Bakery are good - there must be something seriously wrong with my taste buds or something; even though I've had my LARGE share (and most other peoples share) of Chinese bakery items.
We had visited here on one of our first visits to Uwajimaya, that time I had an egg tart, a Chinese specialty - even then I wasn't too impressed.
Today, we revisited and gave them another chance. I chose my favorite - bbq pork bun, my other half had the bbq pork bun and a bacon bun. The bread was not as soft or moist as I would have liked and there was a lot of it, plus there was barely any filling.
After about 2-3 bites, I managed to finally get to the pork filling, from the first taste of the sauce I could tell it had a lot of MSG in it. The filling was mainly sauce which wasn't overly sweet - that was good, but had very few pork bits in it. I have no idea what the bacon bun tasted like and had no inclination to try.
However, the cakes looked great - just like the ones we used to get for our birthdays, ahh the good ole days! Next time I'll go to Mee Sum at Pike place for my next bbq pork bun/hom bow fix.
I work in the International District, and on those mornings when I've skipped the Most Important Meal Of The Day (aka Breakfast), and I can't bear the thought of choking down another Chonga Bagel from Starbucks, I duck into the Yummy House Bakery for a sausage bun. It's a sweet bun with a hot dog in the middle. It's the best quick breakfast ever, and in the mornings the buns are fresh and warm. Hellz yeah. And when I need a sweet pick-me-up in the afternoon, I make a beeline to Yummy House for a piece of their feather-light sponge cakes with whipped-cream and fresh strawberry filling. So, so good.
Go visit Yummy House. But don't eat all the sausage buns - save one for me!
My mom takes me here for their sponge cake!
The cake is really good here, and it's a cake house with bread, plus cakes!
Good for Asian style cakes. They are fluffy, *very* cream-filled fruit cakes.
I prefer the egg tarts from Jade Garden, but these aren't bad.
EGG TARTS, EGG TARTS, EGG TARTS!!!!! I dont think marriage between egg tarts and humans will ever become legal, for if it was, I would be incarcerated for mass murder. because I loveses me some egg tarts, and these are like Jesus. Only not creepy. And egg tarts instead of Jesus.
A casual bakery with new stuff always coming out of the oven. Family owned and operated warmth. The owner always chats with me asking me about my family. I usually get the hot dog bun, egg & ham bun, and their Strawberry/Kiwi cake(LOVE IT!). They keep their freshness high, some bakeries sell overnight crap, THEY DON'T. They quickly move the old stuff into the day old section at discounted price above the counter.
Of all the bakeries in Chinatown, I find this place with the most sense of responsibility to the customers. I salute them.
It's a great place to go after school or after a hard days work to enjoy some coffee and a nice pastry or cake before going home and facing the annoying girlfriend who can't cook. Ummm, I'm not talking about myself of course :)
This is the freestanding store. I wanted to see how the prices and variety differ from Uwajimaya location.
When I was there, the variety was impressive. Of course, the prices were extremely affordable. I had their Mango pudding....out of this world! They even added some whipped topping for me and made it look extra pretty. :)
The atmosphere was well lit, clean, and welcoming.
Two separate days on my way back to Jury Duty I stopped in here for an afternoon treat. One day I went for a Chinese donut, so light and airy and sweet all at the same time. The next time I went for one of their chocolate horns. The perfect place to pick up an afternoon sweet treat. Stop in and get something yummy the next time you walk by.
