Review from Amy G.
The Chinese food is ludicrously bland. The Thai food is rather salty. BUT! Things can be fantastic if you know how to order just right. And in the wasteland that is the North Shore lunchtime scene, Yummy Bowl is an amazing value.
Food-related gripes aside, this is mostly a service-related review. I was ordering carryout from Yummy Bowl this afternoon and was offered the lunch special, $6.99 for a smaller portion of one of your Chinese or Thai favorites with an egg roll, crab rangoon, and a fortune cookie. Being a low-carber, I requested, "No rice, please." Running in quickly to grab my food, I didn't have time to check my order before returning back to my desk in Northbrook. Lo and behold? MY SIDE OF RICE WAS REPLACED BY, YES, EXTRA KUNG PAO CHICKEN. Yeah. Amazing.
Staff there are super friendly and hardworking. Cute decor, nice location walking distance from the Highland Park Theater and Port Clinton Square.
Just be sure to order everything extra-spicy. Seriously. -

Good Chinese is difficult to find around Highland Park. The nice thing about this place is that they also serve Thai food, including my favorite, Pad See Eiw. Those flat big rice noodles that melt in your mouth, the broccoli that soaks up the savory bean sauce, the crunchy bean sprouts and the silky tofu... Delicious.
But I had a craving for lettuce wraps the other day, and I saw Yummy Bowl had them on their menu. They were really delicious, although I will admit to adding my own hot sauce. We also got an order of Kung Bao tofu, which was ok... but nothing special. My mom got the Hot & Spicy Noodles, and expressed some confusion at why there would be jalapenos in a Thai dish. But, none of the food went to waste, so it certainly wasn't completely inedible. -

The best Chinese food I have had in the Chicagoland area. The Mongolian beef, kung pao chicken and the hot and sour soup are tops! The restaurant is also very accommodating for large groups or parties.

"Greatest restaurant in the history of the world!" - My boyfriend.
I will agree! Absolutely great Pan-Asian cuisine. Restaurant is sparsely decorated, but the service is always friendly. Not much to write home about in terms of looks, though. The restaurant is always busy, which is always nice. It's not too loud and it's a great place to go with family or a group of friends.
The lettuce wraps are to die for! They are the best appetizer I've ever had at a restaurant. Every time I go with family, we always get a few appetizers and a few entrees to share. We always go with lettuce wraps, satay, and other various nibblers and for the entrees we always get Pad Thai with tofu, a chicken dish, etc. It's sooo good! The plates are great for sharing, so each person can get a bit of everything. The shrimp, chicken and beef dishes are delicious!
Definitely recommended to anyone who enjoys good, high quality Pan-Asian cuisine. -

This is becoming one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Their lunch specials are amazing. They give you multiple appetizers & a big entree for a really good price. The service is good & the people are nice also.

Yummy Bowl has been around for a few years now, so I'm kind of surprised it hasn't been reviewed yet.
Yummy Bowl is a combination Chinese and Thai restaurant. They used to have completely seperate menus for each discipline, but changed to a combined menu sometime in the last two years.
Since I'm not a Thai food fan, I can't comment on the Thai side of the house. But I *am* a Chinese food fan, and Yummy Bowl is right up there with some of the best! Definitely tasty, and fairly large portion sizes. It's difficult (but not impossible) to order a dish that is merely mediocre; most of the dishes I've had at Yummy Bowl have been very good to superlative.
Ambiance is nothing special. They have a self playing grand piano, but it's usually fallen mute. (Neat trick... :) ) Lots of mirrors to enhance the feeling of spaciousness of the restaurant, but let's be honest it's simply two storefronts with the walls ripped down. There isn't much to break up sound, so if the restaurant is full it can get noisy, but that doesn't happen all that often. Decore is that yellow-butter paint scheme that was all the rage about five years ago. Whatever isn't that color is a mirror, including the one-way mirror from the office space.
Service consists of mainly (surprise!) asians. Your typical server is polite and although (s)he will have an accent, is intelligible. Strangely the restaurant always seems to have more wait staff than a restaurant of this size would seem that it *needs*. (That's a good thing!) Additionally either the manager or what appears to be one of the owners is always present and greets you as you walk in the door; that's a HUGE PLUS as it means they really care about their restaurant!
In short, Yummy Bowl is an absolutely solid Chinese place, and one you can bring people to in confidence. -

We were here several years ago, on the way to Ravinia. We were surprised it wasn't more crowded on a Friday night at dinner time, but the restaurant business is down overall, & they roll up the sidwalks at 5:00 in Highland Park. We enjoyed the egg rolls & 2 appetizers we ordered, and they were a good value for the price. The service was very friendly and attentive. We'll be back again soon.

Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday. We arrived around 6pm on a Friday night and were the only ones there. I always get a bit nervous when a restaurant is completely empty - do people know what I don't?? But luckily the place started to fill up quickly. On one side of the restaurant they seat families with children and on the other side they keep it nice and quiet. Great thinking.
The menu is pan-asian with lots of Chinese and Thai and I see some Vietnamese in there to.
We got the crab rangoon and steamed dumplings - not bad, but definitely not amazing. We got a basil beef and a chicken dish (I don't remember because I didn't care for it much). We also got the crunchy sesame chicken noodles which I loved.
There are so many people working there, especially for a restaurant of that size. There is always a greeter who says hi and bye which is nice to have for any restaurant. -

My husband and I have been regulars at the Yummy Bowl for many years. We find the service outstanding and the food delicious and reasonable. We have friends who come from Bartlett just for the lettuce wraps that put other area Chinese restaurants to shame. The steamed chicken pot stickers are also fabulous. If you want a dish spicier or less spicy, tell your waiter. He will have the kitchen adjust the taste.

Where do I begin!
First, the service was quick and friendly. The manager is extremely kind and genuine. The food was terrific and you have options! You can order both Chinese and Thai, which is something quite unique.
The best Chinese dish was the sesame chicken. Dare I say it is the best in the North Shore!! Also, the Mongolian beef and Shanghai shrimp were no slouch either.
The thai menu was also a pleasant surprise. The satay chicken and beef and shrimp rolls were great starters and the sweet almond beef was definitely the highlight. The beef itself was so tender, something I am not used to in many other Thai restaurants. And the flavor was pungent and just right.
And most importantly, the price was very reasonable. After our gathering, my friends and I have been back many times and the quality has always been consistent. Every time I am back in Chicago, this is one place I never miss out on. -

We had a staff luncheon at Yummy Bowl today and I was pretty impressed. They were extremely easy to work with, very flexible, and the price can't be beat! The food was pretty good and they went out of their way to accommodate the one vegetarian in our group. I can't believe how friendly and attentive the staff members were! I highly recommend Yummy Bowl the next time you're looking for a reasonably priced option for a group luncheon.

There is no telling how many quarts of green tea you'll need to cure your self from this greasy excuse for thai food. Save a buck and go to Panda Express.

Recently I moved up to HP. Finally I found a Thai place. And it would have been ok even if it wasn't good just b/c I needed something local but luckily it is. Can't comment on the Chinese food yet but the other peoples dishes looked extremely appetizing. Pad Thai was better than average and beef w/green curry was very tasty but could use some peppers. The decor is kinda painful. I'm not a fan of carpets in eating areas. It is gross and there is no way to really clean. And the place is so large it feels like they should put up a curtain to cut it down to 2/3's the size.
I'll be going back fairly regularly.
Update. I'm done here. Food hasn't been too good the past 2 times so I'm moving on. -

My husband and I tried Yummy Bowl for the first time tonight. My garlic tofu noodles were absolutely delicious. His red curry was rather bland and could have used some extra vegetables. It was basically just chicken in curry sauce.
I had to revise this review after a second visit. It seems that my garlic tofu on the first visit was the exception. Our egg rolls were burnt. His pad thai and my miso soup with udon were both barely edible. We won't be back. -

After my favorite HP Chinese place sadly closed, it was time to find a new place. Yummy Bowl has a great uptown Highland Park location that was close to my parent's house. I must admit, I'm not the most adventerous eater and tend to order the same thing every time I go there/get takeout. Their egg rolls are definitely my favorite, they are crispy and delicious. I also love the chicken fried rice and moo shu pork. Yummy Bowl always has lots of take out/delivery orders, I think most HPers get Chinese from here. The dining room is rarely crowded, mostly because they do so much take out business. When dining in, the servers are very attentive. The owners make a point to be at the restaurant every day and remember the names and faces of their regular customers.

I can always depend on this restaurant for piping hot, fast, and deliscious food!!! Great portions at a great price...On birthdays they are exceptional singing over the loud speaker with every server and owner Happy Birtday in Chinese.

My family and I love Yummy Bowl!
They have my favorite chicken pot stickers! The restaurant seems to usually be pretty empty but they're big on carry out and delivery. It's actually very nice to dine in because it's quiet.
They have a big enough menu that anyone will be able to find something they like. -

Stick with the Thai entrees and you'll be okay. Everything else is bland.
