Please please please try their Hom-mock (this spelling may not be right, sorry. Please ask about it at the restaurant.), which is seafood steamed curry in cabbage leaves. Yum!
I became a big fun of Thai food because of this dish at this restaurant. -

I'm reviewing this location based on my visit today. I was in search of boba( Aka tapioca) Thai iced tea. As I ordered, the man didn't seem to be in a good mood. I asked for my drinks and I'm assuming he didn't understand me bc I didn't get my drinks right. I was disappointed at my first sip. It didn't have that authentic taste I was looking for as i was used to in Californian restaurants. I personally don't recommend it, but if you're still curios, knock yourself out, it's only $2+ tax. So price wise, it wasn't that much of a loss. I'd think twice before going back.

The sesame chicken was not only HUGE, it was delicious. I love that fact that it was BYOB and super fast. I will def. come here again.

Great, authentic Thai food (I'm Thai!) at a reasonable price. Atmosphere is what you'd find in Thailand, for a not-so-fancy spot. Consistently good. I would not consider Mama Thai authentic in the least...

As others have said this is a diamond in the rough, the diamond bits first. I have been going there for many years, so something keeps bringing me back, a lot of take out coming home from work that's for sure.
The curries, red, green, panang, the pad Thai, basil stir frys and the other noodle dishes, I have tried many. Many really good satisfying well made fresh dishes. The portions are generous not like some Thai places with a few chunks of chicken in the curry and a bunch of sauce.
Last night (dining in house) a friend tried the sweet and sour shrimp, something I usually don't get anywhere because you never know if you are going to get some sugar laden thing, but I was pretty impressed. The shrimp while deep fried (hey that's what your ordering) was fresh, light and crispy, the sauce was well balanced not syrupy and the vegetables were crunchy and fresh and not drenched. I might even get it for myself sometime.
I won't elaborate on my other favorites but I happily try new dishes all the time because they do a good job with very authentic taste. I agree with other reviewers sometimes you don't get Asian broccoli or those little Thai eggplants, sometimes you just have to go with it.
They cook your dish too the heat you want and sometimes I ask for extra basil that I am happy to pay for it. And they use Thai basil which is a pet peeve of mine where they use generic basil.
BYOB a definite plus with the Wine Discounters store on the other end of the block, no problem to get a quick bottle of vino, No corkage fee . I order out from Yum Thai for large groups for carry out because they can handle a big order in a timely manner, get it right and not skimp on portions and they are very reasonably priced. Yum Thai is in a strip mall with parking so you don't have to fool around with that.
Now for the rough part. If this place had the atmosphere of Mama Thai in Oak Park down the street it would blow them away. Because the quality, authenticity and price value of the food is very comparable.in a blind taste test I would bet on Yum Thai coming out better. The new decor of pale blue paint, carpet on the floor (which I hate in restaurants, you cannot keep it clean for long) and bright lighting make it seem cold. So its not a date night place but fine for friends getting together. The addition of the TV in the back playing films on Thailand is not a plus---I kid you not, I was mesmerized by the elephants mating as I spooned my panang curry on a pile of hot rice. Who knew that thing was so big. Not for the faint of heart. Should of spent the money on new flooring instead of a big TV. Warm up the colors. (they had much better scheme from an atmosphere, warmth feel in the past). The owners and staff, are all very nice and accommodating. If you have to wait for your order they offer you tea on the house to drink while waiting. No rushing, very pleasant. There is a bit of family members hanging around at the back tables which is fine, that's how I grew up, but can get distracting going back and forth. None of the rough will keep me from going back again and again. My inner decorator would just like to give them a little bit of a makeover, lower the lighting and turn off the tube. Reserve judgment on the accommodations and focus on the chow. -

A few updated FYIs for those interested in checking this tasty place out:
1) The broccoli is boring ole american broccoli - not delicious chinese broccoli. I found this out the last time I ordered the pad see ewe, which was very good otherwise. I prefer chinese broccoli if an asian style joint is going to offer it in its dishes. I still really like this place and wouldn't reduce the rating - I just wanted to mention the broccoli.
2) I've noticed that the dishes have lost their heat unless you specifically request for it to be hot, even the dishes that indicate spicy. There is just something missing when thai food lacks heat.
3) Panang Curry - still delicious as ever.Listed in: Kee Mao Me Now.

Ok Yelpers...let's get honest here. Yum Thai is not a bad place to eat. It has above average food. But if it came down to a "west side story" dance off...I would be on Mama Thai's side. Yum Thai is on the south side of Madison in forest park, and could blend in with everything else if you are not looking closely. It's BYOB which is always worth at least a half star in my book. Both my boyfriend and I got the Chicken Pad Thai, split some chicken fried rice and chomped down on some egg rolls (fried) and some Crab Rangoon.
The Pad Thai was the best thing we ordered. It had that sweet/salty/spicy explosion every person who orders Pad Thai is looking for. The fried rice was also...can't help myself here: "yummy". It was cooked perfectly, and had nice hearty pieces of chicken in it. It was not what I like to call "Mystery" fried rice. (This is when the fried rice looks so scary that you don't know what you're getting yourself into.). The egg rolls and crab rangoon were nothing to write home about. If you are heading here I would skip the App's and head straight for the main courses. Don't forget to BYOB!
If I could...this place would get 3 1/2 stars. I'm in a good mood today so we will round up! -

Authentic, unassuming Thai restaurant. Not much on atmosphere, but the staff is excellent, the curry unbeatable and the BYOB corkage fee $0!
Not a lot of places in the midwest serve Mee Krob, never mind a tasty version like Yum Thai's. You can not miss with any of their curries. -

Great food, good prices, BYOB.
I ventured into Yum Thai at the recommendation of a friend. Located in a small nondescript strip mall, the restaurant packs a surprise. The Chicken Pad Thai was very tasty and came in a portion size that could feed two. The Panang Chicken Curry was deliciously spicy. Other menu items that I saw on nearby tables also looked delicious.
I look forward to my next visit to a new Forest Park favorite. -

I have ordered take-out twice from here and got the pad see ewe both times. The prices are good and portions are good size, but the food is really heavy on the oil, and the sauce didn't taste quite right. Not bad, just not great. And I asked for extra broccoli once and it was just kind of sitting on top like it was added at the end instead of cooked with the rest of the dish. I think there's probably better places for thai in the area, at least for me.

The best draw to this place, in my opinion, is that it's BYOB.
My BF and I met another couple up here last Friday after hearing good things here on yelp. We wanted to bring some Tiger or Chang beer but couldn't find anywhere that had available cold so we opted to mesh cultures and go with Sapporo.
The second most impressive thing about this place are the prices. For four entrees, two appetizers, and dessert the bill was $44... rock star! We were all shocked. I had read a review or two on here that said their portions weren't very big and generally that's a major turn off for me but I thought for those prices- who cares? We all found the portions to be pretty damn large. All of us ended up having to take food home and the appetizers are plentiful- much bigger portions than any other Thai place I've ever been.
The food, I thought, was good but not great. Nothing tasted very fresh which is a key thing when eating Thai. Also, the staff didn't seem very into serving the customers... we had to use our own bottle opened from a key chain because they never brought one, they weren't very attentive, and it was awkward that we were sitting near the back of the L shaped seating arrangement and all of the staff of the place at at the table behind us and ate as well. I mean, they have to eat but that should be done out of sight of your tables, you know? Or wait 30 minutes until the place closes and do it then.
The major let down here was dessert... I pretty much live for food but first and foremost dessert. Yum Thai only has 2 dessert option... one of which is a custard thing and "I NO EAT CUSTARD" so I got what sounded like a delicious banana treat... not so. No one at the table wanted to touch it... it was described as looking like a pale trout belly, and as much as I tried to defend it that was prob the best way to put it. It also tasted kind of poopy. It was like sticky rice with some weird blueberries inside of it but it tasted like green tea or tobacco and looked like it had been made last month, frozen, reheated, and wrapped in a leaf. It was bad. Without sounding too tactless, eating it was like being "tea bagged" with a really strong green tea tea bag... I mean, it's better than balls but it ain't good. I had a few bites and quit.
I don't know that I'd be back based on my first experience but I don't regret going. I think they deserve a second chance but I just need to douche the tea taste out of my mouth first. Defo more of a Monday dinner place than a Friday one.Listed in: Veggie Terry Delights!!!, Jack Talk Thai, BYOB... in the 'Burbs

YUMMMMM thai.
My red curry provided some much needed heat on this cold cold night. It was soooooo good.
My boyfriend got the pad thai. I had a few bites and it was just OK. Probably a C in my list of pad thai experiences. But the red curry... ohhhhh the red curry. This curry is the perfect marriage of sweet, salty, and sour with just the right amount of heat. A whole bowl full with rice on the side. I have enough in the fridge for lunch tomorrow too.
We had crab rangoon for appetizer. BIG. I think there were about 8 pieces. We probably shouldn't have eaten the whole thing, but we did. Cream cheese and crab goodness. Served with a sweet spicy sauce.
The restaurant is small but comfortable. Red and white table cloths. An Asian movie playing in the corner over Thai music that was being played on a stereo. Not in a distracting way though... both definitely added to the ambiance.
Service was excellent. We didn't wait long for anything. Our waitress was quick with water, food, and bill payment.
And hey! There's even a parking lot out front.

My man and I went here for a quick dinner last week. The place is pretty cute inside for a mainly take-out restaurant. We sat by the window, and had a lovely evening eating an appetizer of crab rangoon (Awesome!), Chicken Pad Thai (not the best but definitely good), and the Yum Thai Noodle (Yummy!). The Pad Thai dish was huge! and I was able to eat it for lunch the next day and still some!
The best part- The bill came to a whopping $24. Now I'm just kicking myself that I didn't grab a delivery menu..... -

This is our favorite Thai restaurant. Best one in the area, hands down. This little hole-in-the-wall place is, to quote Robert R's statement "like finding a diamond in the rough." HUGE portions that you can save for another meal.
Definitely try the Pad Thai and the Curries.
We used to consider Mama Thai as our favorite until we found this one. -

I should start out by saying that I'm really really picky when it comes to Thai food.
Yum Thai is really a decent place. It's small and the food comes out quick enough. But the food isn't terribly authentic and wasn't spicy at all even though we specifically asked for it to be. Also it seemed like there were only two people actually working at the place; while another 4-5 people sat towards the back watching tv and reading the newspaper the entire time... actually one guy was sleeping....
The saving grace of the place in my opinion was their mango sticky rice. It was truly awesome, and was honestly the best that i've had stateside. Which is enough to make me go back. -

I totally agree with Robert R.'s summation of this place! -

With a number of Thai restaurants in the area, I can easily say it's my favorite. The prices are low, the portions are big, free parking, and its BYOB. Plus the wait times are pretty spot on when ordering take out, and there's never a long wait time when getting a table - even when I've gone in with a group of 4+ friends.
I've lost count how many times I've eaten here, and I'll admit to trying many things on the menu. The Chicken Satay is flavorful and juicy, and the peanut sauce tastes homemade. The Crab Rangoon is delicious, as are the spring rolls. The curries are the best I've ever had, and the Bangkok chicken is a treat.
But there are certain dishes that I just cannot live without: the spicy Pad See Eiw is a party in your mouth, and the Ginger chicken is incredible. A day doesn't go by that I don't wish I could go in there for a Thai Iced Tea to go.
Yum Thai, how I love you. -

I think this is the best Thai restaurant in the Forest Park/Oak Park/River Forest Nieghborhood. I would go so far as to say it is a diamond in the rough. It doesn't look like much from the outside - it's situated in a small strip mall between a car wash and a few vacant shops.
-The food is always consistant and the ingredients are fresh.
-VERY reasonably priced in comparison to other Thai restuarants in the area.
-If you like dishes made with curry, try the Massaman (pronounced massa-mon) its my favorite. Don't let this discription scare you but it is coconut milk, peanuts, and chunks of potatoes and marinated meat...YUM! -

Went here on a Saturday around 5 p.m, and had another great dinner.
Vegetable Tempura Appetizer = Delicious and enough for 3-4 people.
Som Tum Salad - not bad. decent flavor for something that's pretty simple.
Had the Panaang Curry again and it is still THE Awesome. I was full even before I got it, but it was so good i couldn't help but eat half.
The wait staff was extremely smiley, attentive and just generally nice - couldn't possibly say anything bad about them.
What I don't understand is that the place was empty - maybe it was an off hour (5 p.m. on sat.), but people should be busting down the door to eat here! Inexpensive delicious Thai Food! c'mon people! I will say that I think the 2 reasons people aren't is because of some of the decor, (some chintzy pull out chairs and some outdated-looking, asian-print table cloths) and the location (it's in a strip mall by train tracks - HA!), but who cares?? Delicious Thai food!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Excellent curry. I mean really good. The green curry here is one of my favorite dishes anywhere and I've come back for it again and again. Also the basil chicken is very good (spicy). If your only idea of asian food is crab rangoon, then no, this may not be a 5-star place to you. But there is someone in the kitchen cooking genuine thai dishes and they know what they're doing.
Prices are inexpensive and portions generous. I sometimes order a dinner order of shrimp curry at lunch and save half for another meal. It's awesome. -
Review from Alicia K.
Yum Thai is really just what a 3 star rating means -- "A-OK." They're not "as good as it gets" (5 stars) and I wouldn't call myself a fan (4 stars), but while I have experienced better (two star rating) the BYOB, large portions for a low price, and the free parking keep it solidly at a 3.
My friends and I went here after a big med school exam to celebrate and they were able to accommodate our group of 15 relatively well space-wise. The service, however, was pretty poor as they brought our dishes out at random times (we're talking 5-10 minutes in between people being served) and couldn't keep track of who had ordered what. They were willing to split the bill about 5 ways, though, and that was a bonus.
The prices (especially for lunch) really are very low, coming in at maybe $6 per person on average. Hefty portions and pretty good food, but it lacked the strong, amazing flavor many of us know Thai to have and was lukewarm to cool instead of hot which made it taste less than fresh. Their pad thai was definitely some of the blandest I have tried, but their curries were ok (again, would have been better had they been hot!).
Would I go back here? Not likely since I really do love Thai and the food here disappointed me, but if you live in Oak Park and want a place you can spend just a little and get a lot and not pay to park, well then I guess you could try out Yum Thai. Just don't expect it to blow your socks off. -

Crab Rangoon: totally tasteless! Had no flavor.
Chicken Satay: good, with nice peanut sauce and cucumber salad.
Yum Thai Fried Rice: my husband had this and didn't really like it. The seasoning was curry-based and the crab (imitation) wasn't good. The shrimp was good, though.
Pad See Euw with Chicken: pretty good flavor, but could have used a bit more broccoli in it. Huge portion! Noodles were a bit goopy, not enough were crispy on the edges (from the pan-frying)
Atmosphere: OK, nothing special. A bit chilly with 3 space heaters going.
Service: Fine, nothing special. -

Yum Thai is excellent Thai food at rock bottom prices.
You don't come for the ambience, that's for sure. But the food reminds me of the real deal street foods in Bangkok and southern Thailand. Generous portions, friendly service, fresh ingredients. They've always got green mango in too for som tum salad :)
Also, Yum Thai delivers to River Forest, which is a major plus. -

I got dishwater flavored over cooked noodles and the peanut sauce was a watered down sweet and sour. THE WORST THAI FOOD EVER. I was nauseous for a week after 2 bites from this meal. I tasted like noodles that feel on the floor that got rinsed and they threw some sauce on it. I have never had WORSE thai food.!!!! oh, the crab rangoon is nickel size cream cheese in a wonton that is soggy.
If I could give negative stars I would. I want not only my money back but the time wasted ordering form there. -

I guess I'm going ot have to give this place another try: the other reviews are so positive I feel like I ate at a different restaurant! I had some kind of chicken and vegetable stri-fry and a cup of ginger tea. Both were unmemorable. I also thought he space was somewhat drab. IMHO Chang Thai, right down the street is head and shoulders above this place, with comparable prices, a nicer dining room and yes, better food.

yum thai is my absolute favorite thai restaurant. i have been a loyal customer for about 10 years and the food is fantastic. great take out. i am not a huge fan of the atmosphere, but i love the prices and the food is fantastic. i have never waited more than 13 minutes to get my meal after ordering. what i suggest:
-chicken lard nar
-chicken satay (their peanut sauce is bomb)
-cashew chicken
-chicken fried rice
-chicken pad see ew
i haven't tried their curries, but i have heard great things! their thai iced tea is a nice treat as well. -
Review from Tina T.
I've heard a lot of rave reviews about this Thai restaurant, so perhaps my expectations were way too high. It's a little bit above average; it's a BYOB, which gives it points; it's prices were very inexpensive, and they had a large assortment of menu items, almost too many. I thought the food was just a little bit above average, but I've definitely had better. It definitely lacks any ambience, it's a little bit dingy on the inside, and the restrooms are in the kitchen. I might go back, but quite honestly, with Amarind being in the same area, they'd win out every time, unless I was looking to do a BYOB.

The only take-out Thai food I have ordered from in all the 6 six years I have lived in Oak Park. Enough said. Love their red curry, green curry and the Pad Thai. Kind of on the sweeter side, thanks to the generous dose of jaggery they throw in, although I don't mind that at all for my kind of taste.

I am a total Thai rookie. I sometimes venture off in to Pad See Eu (or however the heck you spell it) or some panang curry, but I usually stick to pad thai. And I loooooooooove their tofu pad thai. And I know it's not probably Thai, but they have really good crab rangoon at Yum too!
I've only ever gotten take out from Yum Thai because I live right around the corner, and their geographical convenience really boosts their popularity for me. When I quickly glance around when running in to pick up my take-out order, the restaurant doesn't look really dirty or really clean either, but I've not gotten to inspect that really closely at this point.
Bottom line, everything is very tasty, and the people who work there are so accomodating! They will add pea pods to anything as I ask, and the food is a very generous portion for the price - usually I end up spending around $15 for my entree and CR and eat it for two, maybe even three meals.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Tonight was the first time we've ordered from this restaurant and I can happily say I am very impressed. We ordered a very large amount of food as we have family visiting from NY. Appetizers we ordered included: Shrimp in a blanket (Goong Hoo) which were large shrimp surrounded by marinated ground chicken, wrapped in spring roll wrappers, deep fried then served with sweet and sour sauce. Also ordered, chicken satay (served with cucumber salad and peanut sauce), Spring rolls, Thai egg rolls and pot stickers. Entrees included: Yum Thai Curry (curry with shrimp and pineapple), Red Curry (Chicken), Tofu Pad Thai, Sesame Chicken and Mussaman Beef. Cannot tell you how great every dish tasted! My family was also highly impressed. If you venture out for Thai food in Forest Park, I highly recommend ALL of these dishes!!
Only complaint I have is my original order was for 4 orders of Spring rolls but they only had 1 order on hand and this was at 5:30 PM. So, instead I ordered 3 orders of the Thai Egg Rolls. But that is the only pet peeve. Again, food was great! -

My opinion of this place used to be higher. Went here at least once a month for takeout. I'm not especially adventurous, but I thought the crab rangoon, beef pad se yew (sorry for the spelling massacre) and chicken fried rice were pretty tasty.
About six months ago, I think the place changed ownership. I should have known when I placed my order over the phone and the person who took my order didn't recognize me. That's fine. I know in business, these things happen.
Thing is, I'd ordered two orders of the beef pad...you know. One medium, one spicy. Previously, the medium was a pretty decent kick, while the spicy was a right wallop in the rear. This time around, the medium burned my face off, and the hot melted my eyeballs, turned them to jelly, and sent them leaking out thru my nose and all over my face.
Guess one man's medium is another man's 40-kiloton-tongue annihilation.
Anyhoo, the next time I ordered from there, I made sure I got my dishes mild.
I'll probably go back. Prices are still good. The new staff is getting a bit quicker on getting stuff ready. -

I eat thai food like its my job and this place is one of the best. I usually go with the staples - some red or green curry, a plate of pad see eu (awesome). they make a nice som tum (its a papaya salad, ask them specifically for it SPICY) - a staple in thailand that you really can't find at most thai places in chicago. The prices are beyond reasonable and the portions are gigantic. Its BYOB so its an awesome place to go for a cheap but fun meal or as a preface to a night perusing the establishments on madison.

This is the best Thai food I have found in the Chicago area. On my lunch hour I'll drive from 20 minutes away with a carload of my coworkers. If I'm in the area after work, I'll stop there for take out and bring back it home to the far North side of Chicago. I've never had a bad meal and the portions are generous.
