Yacachubis is a new restaurant in downtown San Rafael that serves Yucatecan food. Prior to today, I had never had Yucatecan food. Prior to today, I didn't even know Yucatán was a state of Mexico. Oh how I've been missing out.
Yacachubis has been opened for just a few weeks, and shares a space with Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food. For this reason, they are only open after 5pm, and only accept cash.
The mish-mash of Yucatecan food and American "diner" table settings seems a bit incongruous. My friend told me he mistakenly put maple syrup on his tortilla chips his first visit, thinking it was a Yucatecan novelty. When he took me along on his second visit, he was doing it intentionally... go figure.
Anyhow if you do make your way to Yacachubis, make sure you try their "Brazo de Reina" (Ka' Xu Nan). If you never had this dish before is a MUST try, prepare yourself for some crazy good taste sensations!
The "Brazo de Reina" is Yucatán's own unique take on a tamale. Instead of your standard corn outer shell, the Brazo de Reina features a outer shell mixed with chard greens that adds a hint of original flavor that is usually lacking in traditional tamales. The tamale is wrapped in a banana leaf that gives it an interesting and complex taste. Altogether, this dish offers a full and unique taste that won me over instantly.
Inside the "Brazo de Reina" you'll find crushed pumpkin seeds, spices, and hard boiled eggs. Yes hard boiled eggs! and as crazy as it sounds it all works wonderfully, I think due to the pumpkin seeds, spices inside. The Yucatecan tamales are topped with more sliced hard-boiled eggs and a tomato salsa that compliments the tamale perfectly.
My roommate tried their standard tamales, which taste very similar to tamales you'd get from a normal taqueria. Don't waste your time on the standard "plain jane" dishes like tamales and tacos, there is a much more unique and tasty alternatives here like the Brazo de Reina.
Normally I'd rate a place like this 4 stars, but their Brazo de Reina blew me away. I have to give it up the extra star for that dish alone.
Unfortunately, this place has closed. Looks like any restaurant that tries to pick up the dinner hour inside of Theresa and Johnny's is doomed, I think this was the third in a row.

Yacachubis is truly a hidden gem. Unique regional flavors from the Yucatan, friendly staff, generous portions, and very affordable. I love stopping here on my way back from the city. I'm surprised that it hasn't attracted a crowd yet. When the word gets out this place will be packed!
