The library is my favorite destination for when I'm feeling out of sorts. The Whittaker road location is a cozy respite from the harsh outside world. There are so many chairs and private nooks it's not hard to feel comfortable. It's easy to let hours drift by while staring out the tinted windows at the woods and birdhouses.

The staff is very friendly and understanding when it comes to late fees. They definitely don't berate you for forgetting something was due. The selection is outstanding and requests from other branches usually come in within a business day.

I have no life, so I can usually be found here until close any night of the week.

This is a great library with a good selection of books and friendly staff. The downtown branch is a bit rundown and can be very noisy when crowded, but the Whittaker Road branch is a great place to relax with a book on a weekend.
I have had some trouble with getting items from MeL via YDL, so I wouldn't recommend using that system if you don't have to. The librarians I spoke to about the issue also didn't seem very familiar with their online system which wasn't comforting since a fine had been incorrectly levied against me.

The nearby Ann Arbor Public Library system has a deservedly great reputation, but the Ypsilanti system definitely rivals it.

The Ypsilanti system has three main locations. The largest is the Whittaker Road facility, in its huge, airy, modern building. The downtown branch at 229 W. Michigan Ave is smaller. However, after renovations a few years ago, it's quite lovely inside, in a more traditional and old-fashioned style. The third location is technically in Superior Township, at 8975 MacArthur Blvd.

The hours posted on yelp's site are for the Whittaker branch. Hours actually vary somewhat from branch to branch, so call ahead or visit the library's website if you want to be sure of the hours for one of the other branches.

In addition to going to one of the branches to check out books or do research, consider taking advantage of all the other great free stuff you can get, from checking out new music CDs and DVD movies to taking "learn at your own pace" tutorials in Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel. I've also taken instructor-lead classes at the Whittaker branch, including "Introduction to Microsoft Publisher" and "Introduction to Microsoft Access."

The various branches offer a variety of book discussion groups year-round, a summer reading program for kids, and a variety of cultural events, from history re-enactments to movie nights to art displays.

I've spent a lot of time in both the Michigan Ave. branch and the Whittaker Ave. branch. The staff at both are friendly, and if you're a frequent patron, they will remember you and may even chat you up about what you're reading.

I'm really writing about the Michigan Avenue branch, which is within walking distance of my home. I love this library! It's in a beautifully restored historic building (it used to be a post office). The collection in-house is pretty small, so I tend to reserve stuff from the main library online and pick it up at this branch. The staff is really friendly and informative. And best of all - it's actually quiet here!

Other great features - a pretty side patio with a tile fountain, Bombadill's coffee shop right next door (great place to sit and read that book you just checked out), and a wonderful Kids' section in the basement.

I wish the bus ran down to the main library on Whittaker Road (they have a huge collection and a forest view), but I feel very fortunate to live near this library.

    Great attraction for the downtown.

The Ypsi main library out on Whittaker Road is a lot bigger, but this one has plenty of books to keep you busy. They seem to have an especially large selection of new books on display, a lot of them considering the size of the library.

Ever since the library added more computers, you don't have to wait for access to the internet. If you're seriously addicted to checking email, it's nice to be able to walk in and log on for five minutes. You do need a library card to get online fast, but if you don't have one, you can ask to borrow a guest card for the computers.

I'm willing to say nice things, even though I work for the other library system.
