I LOVEEE THIS PLACE for some delicious Korean mool naeng myun.  They have the best naeng myun I've ever had- super chewy buckwheat noodles, shaved icey cold, and perfectly, flavored broth, and cucumbers, Asian pear, and egg.

Their banchan is SO delicious, they give you a great variety including fried tofu cake, chap chae (Korean noodles), Korean potato salad (with chunks of apple, ham, potatoes and butternut squash).  We also got their kalbi which was really delicious- served on a sizzling plate on top of grilled onions and garlic- yum!!!!!!!!

Hello fellow yelpers, welcome to today's session of Lessons in Vocabulary with your host, Sue Turbo. Today's focus will be on Korean cold noodles.

We will start with the first dishes that you get at a Korean restaurant, which is "banchan". These are known as side dishes and consist of a variety of vegetable, meat, and seafood ingredients. A lot of times, you can judge the quality of a Korean restaurant by the side dishes. If they are super tasty, you're good to go! One of my favorites is the Korean mashed potatoes. "Gamja" is potato in Korean. I'd say their side dishes here were pretty standard and quite tasty!

You Chun is known for their cold noodles, other wise known as "neng  myun". There are two types of neng myun. Bibim neng myun, which is cold noodles mixed in a sweet and spicy hot sauce, and Mool neng myun, which is cold noodles in a cold savory broth. Both usually come topped with julienned cucumbers, sesame seeds, and a slice of Korean pear (my fave!). Now, I'm not sure if You Chun is some region in Korea that specializes in "chik neng myun" (Arrow root cold noodle) but I know there is a nengmyun place in LA called Yu Chun and supposedly another one in Flushing but none of them are owned by the same people. I'm guessing that there probably is a place in Korea that goes by that name. Anyway, "chik neng myun" is different from regular neng myun in that the noodles are black and I think slightly chewier than regular nengmyun. I personally love chik neng myun. I think it's tastier than the regular kind. The neng myun here (both the broth one and the non-broth one) are extremely tasty and the portions are very generous! For $10-$11 it's very affordable and if you think you can't eat that much, there is a smaller portion (I forget what that was called!) for around $8

Now, neng myun is not complete as a meal without some "yook soo" to wash it down. Yook Soo is a beef broth heavily seasoned with pepper and oh so delicious! I remember there was one restaurant that did not have yook soo, I never went there ever again! Anyway, this broth is a gratis. 100% F.R.E.E. and you can have as much as you want. The yook soo here is very good and since I love to get the bibim neng myun, it goes perfectly with the hot broth.

Which leads us to the next word, which is "Jeo Gi Yo!", which means "excuse me" or "over here". This is basically to get the server's attention, especially when you want another cup of delicious yook soo (or a refill of Korean mashed potatoes!)

After stuffing yourself with delicious nengmyun and yook soo, you yell out "jal mu gut sup needa" which means "that was delicious!" and literally translated, means "i ate well!" Don't forget to grab a piece of Korean gum from the front to clean your palate!

Hope you found that little lesson useful! I'm so happy I found this place! I'm a huge fan of nengmyun (I came here on a rainy day!! Usually, you never eat it unless it's hot outside). Overall, You chun was very satisfying and when I'm craving neng myun again, I'll definitely come here!

Don't be confused with the Yoo Chun in LA, Flushing or this one.  They all are different...

This one is definitely better than Flushing!!!  Came here on a hot Memorial day with my dad.  The nengmyun is solid.  Good ice cold broth with tasty flavor.  You can even eat them to go as they wrap everything separately and is still icy when you eat it hours later...

Kum Sung Chik in flushing is still the best!

Naengmyun is just right; it tastes like the one at the You Chun in Flushing, but I'm unsure if these are part of the same chain. The seafood noodle soup is also decent, with udon noodles, but the mussels in it are the tiniest runts. One of the best parts of the meal: that beef bone broth. Glug glug.

This is the good stuff fosho.  At $10 per bowl of delicious bibim or mool naengmyun, it just doesn't get better than this right here.  If it did then I don't know what I'd do.  My head would partially explode.  Delicious delicious delicious.  The ban chan (side dishes) are awesome and included a few surprises that I found to be quite pleasant.  They had some thick sliced pork belly with a spicy kind of moo kimchi and cabbage wrap, as well as some rice cakes that are usually not a part of the usual ban chan lineup.  Very welcome additions.

They have a great broth that accompanies the naengmyun that's supposed to counter the spiciness of the noodles.  However, since it came in a cup that is normally used to drink water, I thought it was indeed water.  SURPRISE!  It is not.  BUT, it is still delicious.

Also had the mandoo teegeum (fried dumplings) which were chock full of meat and vegetable goodness.  To get it is to set your meal off right for real.  It's $8 for about 8ight so pieces but I think it's definitely worth it.  Real good, real big, real bang for the won.

Will come back again.  Bibim naengmyun is my jams.  Jammy jams.

Really what other place has cheap neng myun that is hand made and tasty? Too bad the quality has gone down since the owner decided to make their own noodles.

The mool nengmyun was certainly great and refreshing. The atmosphere is very clean. The prices are average. The drink they provide in the beginning was a little weird for me though. Nevertheless, I can't wait to come back when it gets even warmer!

When the weather is hot and I want something refreshing to cool me down, naengmyun is my go to dish.  Whether it's bibim or mool, there is nothing better than diving into a huge bowl of spicy goodness.  I have very fond memories about eating naengmyun.  For one, my mom makes a killer bibim naengmyun and two there was this kick-ass place which I used to frequent often during hot summer LA days.  When I long for my mom's home cooking which has been awhile or want to reminisce about my carefree childhood days, I stop by here hoping to at least capture those precious moments.

The bibim or mool naengmyun is what I get.  Don't forget to pour yourself a nice cup of that broth.  It's def a ying/yang thing that works perfectly.  I also remember having their ka-al gooksoo which they only serve when the weather gets colder.  && don't forget to dispense yourself a free cup of coffee or yul moo cha before leaving.

Good luck finding parking cause you'll need it. ( :

I remember when one of my co-workers first told me about this place.. how amazingly good it was. I thought how good could Naengmyun possible be. I thought I had Naengmyun before. I was wrong. You-chun is awesome.  Now, I don't know how many other cuisines have a cold noodle soup, so if you're not used to such a thing, then some adjustment may be necessary. However, if you grew up with this stuff, then You-chun is a must. It will blow your mind. It's that good.

Asian ginger salad is served to whet your appetite. They also serve a special beef broth drink that's quite tasty. This comes with your meal. If this is your first time, I'd stick with the Mul Naengmyun (the soup). There is a Bibim Naengmyun available, but it is quite spicy and not for the faint of heart. I've never had the mandu (think potstickers) there, but the jon (think pancake) are tasty and crispy.  The meal comes out pretty fast and service is quick.

If you're into Korean food (which is more than BBQ), check it out. The perfect summer dish.

Edit 5/8/2008: The owner found my review here on Yelp. Even though my review had given You-Chun 5 stars already, the owner sent me a $20 gift card to try out their mandu because I haven't had it before. That is really really cool.

Stick with the bibim or mool naengmyun.  Everything else is just ok.

Avoid the bibim bap as they skimp on ingredients.  Otherwise friendly and good in and out spot to dine.

I give this place 4 stars because they are focused on what they do and the dishes they serve.  I've had the array of apps, soups, etc. and all of it is good for what you pay.  The service is friendly, although sometimes a little slow when it's off peak hours.  The pan chan and the idea of bringing you a thermos of hot awesome beef stock soup is alone worth 2 stars if nothing else was good :)

They are a good quick eat with friends, not gourmet, but great for the price and focused / good menu.  I'd go there again with a large group and hang for a while...

I have yet to find mul naengmyun that took my breath away.  You-Chun comes close to it.  I ordered the mul naengmyun and kalbi.  This is one of few restaurants that actually gives you lot of banchan when ordering mul naengmyun... typically they only give you few if any banchans.
Their noodle is dark and more on the chewy side, but all worth it.  I know some folks like the lighter brown color noodles, but if you get a chance, you have to give it a try.   Their LA Kalbi was good too!  If you are in NJ, swing by You-chun and enjoy some mul naengmyun!

THREE and  a HALF star. Four stars if I round up.
Their specialty is chil neng meun, a special cold noodle made with arrowroot. You would not come here for any other reason. This is the perfect place to go for lunch on a hot, humid, summer's day. Neng meun can be ordered with iced beef stock (which cools you off) or mixed with spicy sauce (which makes you sweat to cool off from). Both noodle dishes are great here. You can flavor your own dish the way you like with extra vinegar and spicy mustard sauce found at each table. You might want to attend here with a Korean friend if you're not sure how much of the "stuff" to put in. If you are not into eating cold dishes, you can order hei jang gook, a hot and spicy stew, but this is just average. You don't get a lot of banchan (side dishes with traditional Korean food) here but you can order dumplings and seafood pancakes for extra bucks. Neng meun is considered to be a quick fast food for Koreans, not a special fancy meal, so don't come here for the ambience, although it is a clean place .

mool nengmyun is ok, nothing special, but then again how can you w/ nengmyun.  one pro or con, depending on your tastte: the broth tastes like goraebap (korean snack, literally translated whale food).

service is normally quick, but on the slower days you can enjoy the beef bone broth (which i'm told is horrible for you, but freaking awesome).  i don't think i've tried the bibimp nengmyun.

    parking is street, $.25 = 30 mins.

    seriously best nengmyun!

    on a hot day/night
their chik nengmyun is best. the bits of ice in the cold broth with their chewy but edible noodles. omg i love. and i love especially when they have the thin slices of moo or pear. YUM!

i have nothing more to say than you have to try this.

their mool mandoo is good too. they have the cute little ones that come out watery. hehe i dunno if you like them but i love em~

i dont like their fried mandoos though.. it's too big and tooooo crunchy. no sireee.

oh and they serve the cup of gomtang gook mool. maybe thats just for the winter. i dunno.. but i like that too. it feels wierd to drink that in place of water so i like to have the options of both. muhaha.

A great place to go if you are in the mood for a Korean cold noodles. Their steamed dumplings, especially the kimchi dumplings, are really good too. Also, noticed that they started there winter menu of warm traditional Korean dishes, however, I would probably stick with what they do best...naeng-myun.

When I lived in NJ, I used to go to this place once a month. Now that I move to the city, i haven't been this place for few years. Today, I brough my hubby and friends to this place. STILL SO GOOD! Their cold noodle is the best in EASTCOAST. We had cold soup base noodle, spicy seafood cold noodle, kimchi dumpling (hand made and very big! yummy!!!), and hot seafood noodle soup. All of us were happy with their food. The place get busy...even though the server tries to serve better and faster, it may get delayed..but not bad. um..still thinking about the food.

I grew up in Korea and when we moved to California, the one thing I missed about Korea was You-Chun's Chilk Mool Naengmyun. So I was ecstatic when I found out that You-Chun had expanded to America and there were restaurants across the US. Although there are quite a few in CA (Rowland Heights, Cerritos, L.A., to name a few) the one in Palisades Park, NJ is my favorite. They are so efficient, getting you in and out really quickly. Plus, their menu is really simple, the main star being the icy cold spicy chilk mool naengmyun. The Kimchi Jeon (a sort of grilled pancake made with kimchi) is also good and huge! During the muggy east coast summers, this place really does the trick.

they have the best mul naengmyun!! i don't even like mul naengmyun, but i like the naengmyun they have here.  it was really spicy.  their noodles are very chewy and the broth is really tasty. the bi bim naengmyun was pretty good (i ordered this because i don't usually eat mul naengmyun.)

be prepared for long lines on a hot summer day.  this is a specialty restaurant so don't go in expecting a large variety of korean foods, or BBQ for that matter.

WARNING: the liquid in the thermos is not tea!! it's some kind of cold broth.  we poured a whole cup full and took a huge gulp to our surprise.  refreshing yes, but doesn't quite satisfy your thirst!

all the neng myun places i tried in manhattan sucked, even the restaurants that specialized in neng myun.  i was beginning to think i'd have to go to philly any time i had a mul neng myun craving, until i ate here on friday night.

we ordered the dumplings and kimchi jun(kimchi pancakes) as appetizers.  the dumplings were all uniform in size and i especially liked that the shell didn't overpower the filling, and they were pretty good.  can't comment on the kimchi jun since i'm not really a fan.

the mul neng myun is one of the best i've ever had.  the noodles are made from arrowroot(sometimes translated as kuzdu), instead of the more commonly used buckwheat noodles.  i definitely prefer the arrowroot noodles - they're chewier and they have a denser, earthier taste than buckwheat noodles.  i love that they also serve hot beef broth on the side, which i'm convinced is actually liquid crack - i couldn't stop drinking it!

by the way, the palisades park location is MUCH better than the manhattan location.

I'm sad that I never knew this place existed in Dallas, where I used to live, because it is the best naengmyun I've ever had and what a perfect dish to have for these hot, summery days up here. I usually get the kid's portion because the regular one is just too much for me. It, also, comes in a spicy version which I highly recommend too.  Actually, I recommend everything here except the bbq items.. haven't tried those yet.  But, the dumplings and seafood pancake are delicious! The pancake comes out with really crispy edges, which is what I usually like. Their side items like the pickled radish is very good... I have to stop myself from getting full from these before my entree comes out. There's a beef broth that comes with the meal in a metal canister, which I mistakenly thought had tea in it.  Some people don't like, but I think it's good to have to complement the cold noodles.

Bibim naeng myun - so good. The chewiness of the noodles takes time to get used to, but once we did the bowl was demolished quickly. The warm broth that they give you worked perfectly for us, since it was raining and a bit chilly outside, but we still wanted naeng myun. Also tried the green bean pancake - thick and perfectly fried, though we had to take one home since we were full of naeng myun. We were definitely the only non-Koreans in the place, and it has a great, comfortable atmosphere.

Foods are fine. Sometimes great sometimes not. That's why I cannot really recommend this place. Nangmyun is for Summer time especially for Koreans. However that doesn't have to mean that it's ok to taste aweful in winter. This place definately offers good Nangmyun, but there's too big upandowns in its taste. Ok to go in summer, avoid to go not in summer.
