A drunk sushi chef is a happy sushi chef...oh, and you've got to sit at the sushi bar.

This place has everything that makes it a 5 star rating:
1.  Great food - sushi was probably one of the freshest I've ever tasted
2.  Great service
3.  Very decent prices
4.  Oh and it has the coolest sushi chef around, especially after a couple rounds of sake!  :)

I took my coworker here after tasting their amazing food a week ago and decided to sit at the sushi bar.  The sushi chef is Yoshi but he doesn't own the place.  If you see a very big hair Japanese lady with lots of rings and makeup, she's the owner.

Yoshi started chatting with us, so much so that he was remiss on making sushi.  The owner went behind the sushi bar and starts reprimanding him in Japanese.  He turns around and she rolls her eyes at us then motions with her hand that he loves to yack and he's only getting getting started.  You really have to experience him yourself.  He starts to sing and adamantly tells us Stevie Wonder was the man.  He then starts to imitate good old Stevie.  Keep in mind, he's doing all this while slicing fish with an extreeeemely sharp knife!  Now that's talent!

He shares stories about places he's been, his childhood working at a fish market, selling sushi for his mom and wears these bright flair pants with fish all over them.  We buy him a sake and he's off and running!  The second chef was pretty quiet so we buy him one to loosen him up.  Besides, the owner claims the quiet one starts to sing when he drinks...hee hee!!!

We bought them a couple rounds but never got them both to sing before we had to go.

Oh, the food!  Yes well, their food is to die for.  I had their salmon skin roll, gotta try their seaweed salad, their miso soup is flavorful without being overly salted, spicy tuna roll, and crispy roll.  They were all pretty amazing, doesn't seem like you can get a bad roll here.

Definitely gotta come back, maybe the next time I'll get the chef's to sing!

Who would think you could find great sushi way out here in West County?
But Mr. Yoshi puts together an excellent boat.

All very fresh, healthy cuts of sashimi, and a wonderfully friendly atmosphere.

You will come back again, I guarantee.

I am totally surprised by the reviews....I tried this place for the first time on Wednesday and thought the food was ok at best. That is being really generous.

The atmosphere stinks. I totally agree with the other review that the decor is really random and almost creepy. Our server was not friendly at all, in fact I kind of felt like I was bothering him. I ordered lemonade and he brought me a dirty can that looked like it had been rolled in trash and beaten up by a baseball bat. He seemed annoyed when I asked for the small bottled Sprite's instead.

I am nursing a serious cold and went for the Miso soup and well...it tasted like rotten fish.  I couldn't event eat it. I happen to have a passion for Miso soup didn't know before this that it was even possible to mess that up.

The avocado roll my preggo friend ordered was tiny, the other rolls were pretty standard, and the chicken teriyaki my son ate was not very tasty at all. Oh yeah...and they charged me the adult price for that.

Maybe I would feel different if we ate nigiri here - but when it comes to everything else when tried, it left very little to be desired.

I wasn't overly impressed with this place. I only went here once, and I have to say that I've been to several better places. It was also totally empty when I ate here, which just makes it feel a little creepy, especially when every other restaurant in the area is packed every night.

First of all, the atmosphere is pretty dingy. The décor is pretty random. It just didn't have that extra something that makes you feel like you want to be there.

The sushi wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't anything mind-blowing either. Maybe we just didn't order the right stuff--I don't want to write this place off. I'd try it again. It seems like a nice, locally owned sushi joint. It just needs some work.

When I moved to the St Louis area, I was really concerned that there wouldn't be anything here but sucky sushi. I was seriously thrilled to be proven wrong, and right here in Chesterfield!

First of all, a bit of advice: Don't sit at the tables, the service is slow, and you miss all the fun.

The bar is the place to be. All of the chefs are sweethearts with great senses of humor. They laugh at me when the wasabi tobiko makes me cry, but I can't get mad, I'm laughing with them.  Mr Yoshi himself is a trip! He sings, tells strange and funny stories, and is all around the life of the party.

As for the food, I enjoy it. They always stock excellent tobiko, and their octopus is invariably very tender, not chewy at all. The rolls are tasty and well executed (and I always smile when I see the antennas on the caterpillar roll - I wish I could order every roll with antennas!)

I have to say that I just had the best spider roll that I ever had at Yoshi's.

The sushi was really good.  The other rolls were ok.  The "dynamite roll" was what we were expecting of the spicy tuna roll.

Yoshi spoke to us the entire time we were there.  He gave us some random history on Taiwan (we're both from Taiwan) and told us how to make the soup base to sukiyaki, which we've been searching all of St. Louis for.  However, for some reason, something seemed missing...

The girlfriend pretty much hit it right on the dot... "All I could think was that I missed Kenji!"

Stuff we tried:

Uni / Toro -  Excellent.

Spider Roll - yeah there must be a reason why almost EVERYONE orders this.

Kanbyomaki - a sweet pickled (maybe) squash or something.  Pretty tasty.  And cheap.  :)

Spicy Tuna Roll - Just get a tuna roll.

Dynamite Roll - What the spicy tuna roll should have been.

Yoshi is indeed brilliant, and the quality of the fish is astounding.  Even the atmosphere is as close to charming as a suburban strip mall can accommodate.

I'm always disappointed in the menu, itself though.  Aside from a la carte sashimi and nigiri, the entree selections and maki rolls are uninspired and there just isn't anything that's so tasty it'll keep you coming back.

Still a great destination when you just want pure, simple, fresh sushi.

For the sushi purists, this is the place to go when in St. Louis.  Simple, fresh fish on a bed of great tasting rice.  Don't expect many fancy rolls - this place is for those who want to taste their fish.  As a bonus, their udon is satisfyingly refreshing.

There are many sushi places in STL; this is the best.  Don't come from the location or the decor, come from the fish.  I've tried pretty much every place in town, and though Yoshi's isn't the fanciest or most expensive, it's the best when it comes down to what's on your plate.

This is the one of the best sushi places in town, brought to you by the former sushi chef of I Love Mr. Sushi.
