I was extremely, extremely satisfied and happy after my meal here!
I love albacore, and the albacore here does not disappoint! It's so fresh and melt-in-your-mouth good, plus there's no overt fishiness to the flavor. It gets topped with what tasted like a smidgen of raw garlic puree, ponzu sauce, and green onions, and it was SO GOOD! One order comes with 2 pieces, and I think my boyfriend and I could've eaten like 20 pieces. SO YUMMY!
We also got the tofu salad, shrimp and asparagus roll, spicy tuna roll, tempura green tea ice cream, and the beef teriyaki. The beef was very typical, but I'm never impressed with beef teriyaki. The tofu salad was simple and I enjoyed the dressing, but it wasn't a memorable dish. If they used fried tofu, I think it would be MUCH better. I loved all of the rolls we got, and I appreciated that you can choose how spicy your spicy tuna is. We got a 3 cause we're kiiind of weaksauce, but I think a 5 would've been perfect. The 3 wasn't spicy at all.
I love tempura ice cream, and Yoshida's did not disappoint. They drizzle a caramel sauce on the plate and serve it with real whipped cream. Mmmm, I wish I could successfully make my own tempura ice cream!
This is definitely going to be my go-to sushi place in the SGV. I've been looking forever for good sushi in the area, and I can finally end my search!
note: they have plenty of parking in the back, so I'm not sure what people are saying about "limited parking". Maybe during the afternoon it gets REALLY busy? At 7 pm there was a ton of parking.
I took T here for his belated birthday dinner and made certain we sat at the sushi bar and had Yoshi as our chef. I also planned on serving Yoshi plenty of alcohol so his personality would shine even more.
I've never had rolls here, only sashimi and they always have really fresh fish.
We stuffed ourselves silly last night. We ordered the Red Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Squid, Toro, sweet shrimp, eel, and Kobe beef.
Everything was really good except for the squid. There was something off about it this time. There was a slimy film covering it causing the squid to taste fisher than usual and it didn't taste as fresh. The Kobe beef was heated with a blowtorch making the meat sizzle, bringing out the fatty flavors of the meat. He makes this great pepper sauce with Yuzu. It reminds me of chunks of jalapeno in citrus juice. It's so delicious, I was eating the sashimi with teaspoons (anything more and you'll have problems on the other end) of the Yuzu. Yoshi said I could possibly buy it from a Japanese market. I'm making a trip there ASAP.
We ordered 2 bottles of unfiltered Sake, 2 bottles of beer, and a bowl of frozen sake. I think we gave Yoshi 4 shots of sake and 1 glass of beer. The couple next to us were celebrating their engagement and since we couldn't finish our drinks (getting too loaded), we offered to fill their shot glasses with the frozen sake.
The dinner and ambiance were great as always. Yoshi makes it a special treat. He's a character!
My personal sushi policy as I have stated here is a quirky, one might say. I feel that you should stay with one particular sushi restaurant to develop a personal relationship with the place. Get to know what comes in usually fresh and unique, get to know the host/owner for the best seats in the house, and lastly, pick & stay with a good sushi chef/master. The last one, and most important one, you would hope, that your sushi chef remembers you, as well.
Anyways . . . about Yoshida. Many people have been raving about how Yoshida is the best sushi restaurant in San Gabriel valley. They are talking about how fresh his this and that is. They also talk about the uni, which is my personal favorite and what I usually order first, is bomb-diggity! (gotta add the diggity, if you say bomb).
I must admit, I did like the sea urchin, served in the shell. You don't see many places with sea urchin, Uni, with the spiky shell. They crack it open and prepare it in front of you. Nice touch and presentation. I don't know many places that serve in this manner nor have the sea urchin in the shell. It taste fresh and not as saltly as how I usually have it. It is more refreshing. I do like it. This is a must-order.
The other sushi was standard. Nothing special. The oysters with fish eggs and a quail egg yolk was different. I am not a big fan of oysters. The halibut, another personal favorite, was good. Sushi, like anything else (I will explain more later), is good when you don't remember it. I like almost anything with ponzo sauce.
As I mentioned before, I talked about remembering something and expecting it. People enjoy the foods that they remember. People will remember that taste and experience from the meal, which drives future cravings. Though in remembering a meal, they won't mention it to others, unless it was a bad experience. Luckily, I didn't remember anything bad at Yoshida's.
One last thing, Yoshida also had a good green tea tempura ice cream. I thought this was pretty good.
I think Yoshida's bit overrated - with a heavy emphasis on price. I think our bill, for 2, with alcohol was about 120 or so. If I was going to pay that much, I would go to Sushi Gen. For a neighborhood sushi restaurant, I think the price was too high. I would rather go to Sushi of Naples, in Pasadena.
This place is known for their Live Uni. Yup, they open it up right in front of you, clean it and serve it to you live while it's outer points are still moving back and forth. Located in the heart of San Marino brings you a nice authentic Japanese Sushi restaurant with Chefs that know what they're doing. I tried pretty much most raw things on their menu and they are definitely up to par. The only thing I have to say about this place is Large Salmon Eggs was mushy and slimy and overly salty which meant it was not fresh. Seating is limited so arrive early or during non-peak times. The parking is also limited but you should be able to park in nearby streets if needed. If you want the real deal then come here.
Pros:
- Authentic sushi chefs.
- Fresh fish.
- Live Uni served when they have it in stock.
- Good place to go if you don't want to venture off to Los Angeles.
Cons:
- Bad Salmon Eggs when I ordered them.
- Chilean Sea Bass was small portions.
- Limited seating.
- Long wait times.
- Limited parking spots.
This place grosses me out. Just because it's Japanese owned and has a Japanese staff doesn't mean it's awesome.
The quality and variety is lacking. I have to say it's fresh though. But the flavors of the fish are bland.
The service is horrible. They are out of control and have no etiquette.
If you notice, none of the customers are Japanese.
Eat here if you like CLASSLESS, ORDINARY sushi rolls for beginners.
I have to say this the sushi here is very fresh and quality high. The execution and cut of the fish however is probably where I think other places do better. We had live uni (a little strong in taste for my liking, but very fresh. Normally I like it much less strong and sweeter, but its different), scallops from japan, giant clam (you need to try this), blue fin toro(ridiculously rich), spanish mackerel, amber jack, seared salmon, hamachi yellow tail (scrumptious), grilled yellowtail fish cheeks (my date practically devoured the whole dish on her own). We were going to go to Sushi-Gen, but with traffic and what not we opted for a closer remedy to our Sushi cravings and were pleasantly surprised.
Price wise I'd have to say I'd probably drop the same coin at Sushi Wasabi in Tustin or Sushi Koyo in Diamond Bar. Nevertheless Yoshidas does stand well in my rankings and is definitely on top of any list in the SGV/LA area.
Very fresh and good quality, you can tell, BUT the price is definitely up there. High prices and small portions... just like Japan! XD; As a general cheapskate, I'm not sure if the price is totally worth the fare, especially since most of the flavors are very simple, but it's a nice place to go just once in a while.
I usually go here with my parents, since they really like this place. My mom likes to order the fried agedashi tofu, my dad likes the shrimp sushi/sashimi with the soup (you pay an extra $2.75 and they make miso soup with the shrimp heads for you - you get two shrimp per order). They also like the dynamite and the green salad (has a really yummy sesame/peanut type dressing).
My personal favorites are the grilled toro, the sauteed mushrooms AND the tempura green tea ice cream.
***I reeeally like their fried ice cream!, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes sweets. It's delicately done and freshly made, they cut it into quarters for you, add a cone of whipped cream and drizzle caramel sauce along the bottom. The batter is really warm and crispy and almost cake like, with the ice cream just starting to melt along the edges. I only wish they had a red bean option!
Since Yoshida is local for me,I would probably drop by just for this dessert.
Odd little place in the middle of the loooong Huntington Drive. There's not much to talk about the "decor" because there's minimal except for a strange water fountain by the wall on the other side of the restaurant.
Fresh fish, keep an eye out on their specials. Last time I had an order of Tai sashimi (with little bit of skin on), which was pretty good. Live UNI!!! I was never successful in landing a live uni in Redondo Beach so I was pretty excited. There were a lot of uni and they were SWEET! Must have! Forget about the imitation crab BS, the crab sushi uses real snow crab meat! The toro is to die for. This is the only place I've had toro this good other than Toshi-san in San Diego.
Overall great food. Service is good but I'd give it a 2.5 for ambience.
We came here about an hour and half before they close on weeknight. The front part was completely occupied with nobody sitting at the bar. We were then seated to the back which seemed like a totally different restaurant when you walk in because it's low-lighting, with nicer tables and a waterfall in there - completely empty which we loved. We ordered the Yoshida Roll, Philadelphia Roll, 2046 Roll and Tempura. The tempura could be better compared to other restaurants because they had tomatoes instead of potatoes and the batter was made too light with not enough crisp. The philiadelphia roll tasted amazinggg. It came with a special sweet sauce that made the rolls/cheese taste even more fantastic. MmmM, gotta love the sweets! My mouth is just watering writing about it! The yoshida roll is pretty good and fun to eat with the different fishes and tasted pretty soft. The 2046 roll tasted pretty whack which kinda threw me off guard since its named after their street. It was too dry, almost like eat bits of pieces of chips on a roll.
The service was too much. The waitress wouldn't stop bugging us by asking if we're doing alright forty minutes before they were supposed to close. Sometimes, female waitresses are just too much. They never know when to calm the fuck down.
I'd come here again to eat that deep fried philadelphia cheese rolls omg.
I'm a self-professed sushi snob, and Yoshida is my #1 go-to sushi place in the San Marino/Pasadena area. I've been going to Yoshida ever since it opened ~10 years ago, so I guess it's about time that I finally wrote a review for it.
It's hard to pick a favorite fish to recommend since everything I've had there has been so fresh and delicious. My favorites are yellowtail and white tuna--but those are just personal preferences, not necessarily what Yoshida does best (since everything is excellent). My parents' favorite is the live umi (sea urchin), which they bring to you while still alive in order for you to ascertain its freshness. I love to order the dynamite--in fact, this is the only sushi restaurant that I've ever been to where I've liked the dynamite. I appreciate how they let you specify how the spicyness level (on a scale of 1-10) for the dynamite and any spicy rolls you might order.
My only occasional complain about Yoshida is that it's sometimes a little difficult to get a server's attention since they get really busy, and there isn't much ambiance to speak of, but the sushi/sashimi is worth it.
Made it back in to Yoshida this past Friday night.
This used to be a main stay for me and the best
sushi on this side of SGV.
My previous visit earlier this year it just seemed off, then came
again and was still not the same.
So a good 1/2 year later made it back and for one this made sure
to sit at the bar. Ended up getting Yoshi for service, even though
quite a few beers n sake had found there way to him.
His personality has helped build a strong loyal following among the San Marino locals and actually end up with quite a few kids there.
The quality this time around was far better.
Probally ended up getting a dozen different items from Yoshi in which I prefer sashimi.
It's good to see the restaurant doing good numbers and seeming to turn tables, so hopefully there will be a few more years out of this shop.
The cucumber rolls tasted good. I had a round of most of the cuts on and off of his menu.
Mr. Yoshida took care of us and suggested to us everything that was fresh that night, including Kobe beef seared with a propane torch. The kobe beef reminded me of otoro since it was so fatty and smooth.
I enjoyed the albacore with ponzu even though its not authentic sushi. The red snapper and mackerel were my favorite though. Since there is no way you can go wrong with fresh salmon and tuna. I also had otoro cut tuna which was melt in my mouth. I wasn't fond of the simpson clam or octopus but everything else off their menu was good to me.
I've had nigiri sushi and Kobe beef in Japan and this is one of the few restaurants that remains memorable to me in LA at this price range if that says anything. The most important ingredient in sushi is the rice. That is the most challenging to get right in my opinion.
Since sushi joints in LA have been turning into fusion restaurants serving California rolls (tires) its rare to find any decent place without wads of mayonnaise to mask up bad cuts of fish these days.
If anyone knows of a comparable or better sushi restaurant please do tell
In terms of sushi:
Pros: 1) Fresh seafood 2) no wait on a weekday night
Cons: 1) The (raw) fish to rice ratio is a little off. (I appreciate they give you a whole lot of fish... but.... sushi is about the balance between the sushi rice and the fish).
One of my happiest Sushi Encounters :D
It was TOTALLY worth the 10 minutes wait till it opened at 5pm :P
Always a good sign when they have a "today's special" board, so you know what's the freshest or best quality seafood of the day. And they had several items flown in from Japan, yay!!!
We had salmon, squid, scallop, halibut sushi, spicy tuna roll, blue crab roll and a some roll with avocado on top and eel inside.
the scallop was flown in from Japan, so fresh and tasty
and the halibut just melted in my mouth...... soooooo good
you get to choose the spicy grade of your spicy tuna roll as well.. fun :) I had a 5.. I think I want to try a 10 next time :P blue crab roll was also tasty.. they are very generous with the portion of seafood, unlike some stingy places which all you get is rice and sauce and they charge you an arm and leg
I think you'd care to know that their fish on the sushi actually covers the rice which is how the authentic sushi is suppose to be like :)
just SUPER FRESH, SIMPLY DELICIOUS seafood... plenty of love, looking forward to go again very very soon!
Service was warm and prompt ! they even give you half of a cut orange for dessert, sweet!
p.s. they have live Sea Urchin... about $12-15 each :)
Sashimi probably causes more heated debate among food lovers than any food type other than barbecue. I know friends who swear by Katsu-Ya, Sushi Gen, Hama and a dozen other places and having eaten in most of them can heartily agree that they are all amazing and worthy of their acclaim. On this particular Saturday, Yoshida was the equal of every one of them and better if I may be so bold.
We hadn't been here in years, the last time being long before they expanded into a second dining room. Even back then it was a very good restaurant, probably the best sashimi in the area. Lately we've just gravitated towards Little Tokyo and forgotten about this hidden gem. Now I'm sad I've been missing it all these years because if the quality stays even close to what it was on this visit, it's flat out amazing.
It was busy when we arrived, just as it always is but we were fortunate to get sushi bar seating right in front of Yoshida himself in just a few minutes much to our delight. He's funny, charismatic and friendly and you can tell that almost every customer here is a regular as they stop to chat on the way in and out. He's also a whiz with the knives, and it's really something to watch him work. His first act in fact was to slice a large live lobster right in half, gut it and plate it. Not good to be a lobster, either you get dunked in boiling water or you get sliced and diced. It is however really good for whoever ordered him.
We started with the standards: Tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail, Halibut and Salmon as we usually do and they were each so good we decided to let Yoshida pick for us. From there things just got better and better.
Blue Fin Toro was melt in your mouth perfection.
Unagi here was the best version I've ever had. Often times there are tiny little bones or cartilage in the cuts even in the best places but here there was nothing but thick meaty cuts of the eel in a sweeter than normal version of the sauce.
Live scallops from Japan were amazing. Here you could taste the sweetness of the scallop and each piece had just the right chewiness to it.
Sanma is an imported fish in season only this time of year. Here one slice is seared and the other served raw. Not wildly different but delicious all the same.
Uni. This is what they're known for here. They have sea urchins imported from Santa Barbara daily and you get them served spikes and all. I'm not a fan of uni. I find almost every version I've ever had to have a strange and unpleasant aftertaste. It is however my wife's favorite so we ordered regular frozen version, followed by the live version. This is by far the best uni I've had, especially the live version. Cut open, there are eight cuts or so plated with the spikes behind it on the plate. If you squirt lemon on the shell the spikes continue to move to keep you company while you dine. Uni here is buttery. If you hold it on your tongue it just melts slowly away and with no aftertaste at all. It was also my wife's favorite ever.
Oyster Sundaes were however my favorite dish of the day. They're on the half shell (for the person who incorrectly wrote that they weren't), topped with two types of caviar, an egg and hot sauce. Yoshida gives you a scale of 1-10 for the level of heat, seven will mildly sear your tongue in a good way.
This was without a doubt one of the best sashimi meals we've ever had. My wife is a diehard Sushi Gen fan and thought this was better. It's possible we came on a stellar day, it will take future visits to know for sure but on a good day this place is heaven on earth.
I can't tell you if the cooked entrees are good or not, but then again I'm not exactly sure why anyone would come to a sushi restaurant and order anything other than sushi. Plates are moderately priced, it's not Sushi on Naples but then if that's your idea of good sushi then you've wandered into the wrong place.
Remember: no cell phones on in the restaurant. I love that.
Best Plates: Live Santa Barbara uni, scallop from Japan, Oyster Sundae, Blue Fin Toro, Unagi, whatever Yoshida tells you.
Food - A+
Ambience - A-
Service - A+ Yoshida/B staff
Value - A-
i love love love looooove Yoshida's!
I always have a great time here! You should try sitting at the sushi bar once in awhile. The chefs there are so entertaining and Mr. Yoshida is very attentive and funny.
The sushi is seriously really fresh. I absolutely adore their Yoshida roll and their albacore. Someone told me that they get it from Santa Barbara every morning? Maybe. Anyways, I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to eat some good ass sushi. The only problem is that I always get their times mixed up because they close after lunch in order to prepare for dinner.
Go go go go!
I am hooked on this place! I just came here yesterday with my best friend and her family. And I'll be back for sure!
Parking is a bit of a hassle, and the place seems small; but it's definitely worth it because the sushi is great!
Like most places they have snow peas that you can snack on until you get your food. The "Super California Roll" was great! Very similar to a dragon roll for those of you who were wondering.
"White Tiger Hand Rolls" are god! They come in different levels of spicy, so it's your pick. They're amazing and a must order!
And finally, the deep fried ice cream. I wasn't digging the bread coating they used, but the ice cream was very good.
Best sushi place in SGV.
I will say that Yoshida's is the best sushi spot in San Gabriel Valley next to Blue Fish in Montrose but I'm not sure if that's in SGV. Anyhow, this place is really good but a bit pricey but worth it I think. The fish is very fresh and the rolls are huge.
Lunch time and dinner before 6 PM are the only times we didn't have to wait. All the sushi chef's are actually Japanese which I think is awesome and everyone is very friendly. Service is good and plenty of parking in the front or rear.
I definitely recommend this place!
I have to say, this was the first sushi place I had ever been to. I never liked sushi and my boyfriend and his family brought me here and there's no turning back! The sushi is the best around.....everything I've had there has been sooo good! I highly recommend it to all you sushi lovers!
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! The sushi is the greatest in the area. I have tired many others, but nothing competes against Yoshida. I used to go when this place started small and look at it now. There white tuna sweet shrimp, jack special number 12 is fantastic. Words can not describe this place, because it is so good.
This is one of the best sushi joints in town. The quality of the food is out of this world. It's artistry that tastes great. The albacore is always fresh and will melt in your mouth. No need to chew. The only way this place loses a star is on service. Sometimes it's a little frustrating. When they get busy, they're not able to keep up the level of service. But most people who come here are ready for that. The waitresses do genuinely try, but maybe they lack organization or staffing.
Do yourself a favor. Definitely have dinner here, but mentally accept that you might have to hunt down your waitress from time-to-time.
This restaurant is small and cozy. The sushi here is fresh. When I mean fresh, I mean no after taste whatsoever. BUT, there is always a BUT when the price doesn't justify the amount of sushi you get. Somehow, my girlfriend and I will always spend easily over $100 for the 2 of us. Therefore we found an alternative to substitute Yoshida for GIN sushi in Pasadena. Minus one star for charging me too much.
This is either the best or one of the best sushi restaurants I have tried in the Los Angeles area. It is a bit pricey though.
fresh sashimi, and i loved the sparkling sake.
I had the sashimi combination plate, sea bass, scallops, cucumber specialty roll, and tempura green tea ice cream.. loved all of it
went here again tonight.. love the live UNI! just delicious and fresh!
I had a chirashi bowl and it was good - the sashimi was really fresh. Honestly I thought the place is just average though. But then I've only been here once. Service was alright, place could be a bit cleaner. Location is sorta weird.
Live Sweet Shrimp was delicious and so were its fried to perfection heads.
Live Uni was delicious too except I couldn't help but cry a little when I saw the little guy/girl/it wiggling. *tears*
I had the Spider Roll and as others have said, the rolls are fat but they are quite pricey.
The nigiri sushi was on par for Tuna and Salmon.
Absolutley love this place. A friend brought me here last year and I have to say this might be my favorite suhi place in the country. Service is awesome and not to mention how fresh everything is. Make sure to get an oyster sundae.
For once, I can say YELP didn't fail me...! I was yelping to see if there's any good sushi place around the area and Yoshida has 4 stars on yelp with over 150+ reviews so I'm sure it will okie to try out right?.
There's nothing that I don't like about this place so 5 stars it is. Everything I tried here was great so definitely 2 thumbs up forsho! I think without yelp, I wouldn't find this place because it's a hidden gem located on Huntington and it's easy to miss. I thought it was kinda small when I first came in, but there's another side to it too. The service was really good, friendly waitress I must say. They always check up on my tea etc etc. They give you good amount of wasabi & ginger so you probably don't have to ask for more. In the end, they bring out cute orange for dessert...schweet!
I didn't get to try that many rolls from them but I like the ones we got. The rainbow roll was really good, 10 pieces for $12? Not bad eh? It consists of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp and crab. I preferred this one over their Yosida roll. Their Yoshida roll has the same ingredients, except it's wrapped up like California roll. I think I didn't enjoy that too much because it's too big and it has that california roll taste to it. The sashimi combination was delicious as well! It has tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white fish and calamari salad. Good combination for $24! Overall, the fish was very good and most importantly fresh, so no complaint there. Oh yea, I also tried their beef teriyaki combination and that wasn't too bad. The soup was yummy but I think the salads could be better though.
I love Sushi and this was one of the best places I have ever been to.. Yoshi the owner was the chef and everything he made was good. Tuna, yellowtail, sweet shrimp, salmon.. Yummy... The quality of the fish is good as Yoshi goes to the fish market every morning to buy fish. I would highly recommend this place.
Sushi is fresh and good. Sure it's a bit pricey but the ambiance and selection is good. They have a nice variety of stuff to try out. Great place to take a date.
Really yummy and fresh sushi... My parents like to eat here once in awhile and the waitresses actually speak Japanese.
My only gripe is that we waited a ridiculously long time for a table on a Friday night. One hour and 10 minutes to be exact when they kept telling me "you're next", and in the beginning said that we would only wait 30 minutes. There were about 9 other people ahead of us and four other people after us...everyone got seated except us. The waitress was confused...she included some other stranger into our party (she assumed we were together since we walked in at the same time---even though we gave her two different names)
All I wanted was an apology for the mix up.... nonetheless, the food is really good and as flustered as I was, the sushi made up for it.
I have a friend who is about as insane as a human being can legally be without being strapped on a table and given electroshock therapy. No, she's not a Scientologist either. She recommended Yoshida to me and given that I take everything she says rather... umm... lightly, I was not expecting much. I was so wrong for pre-judging. Batshit insane or not, her taste buds are definitely intact.
A friend and I tried it out recently and we decided to order one of almost every kind of sushi and share so that we could taste as much of what they have to offer as possible. The fish was fresh, incredibly tasty and the chef was extremely talented. The interior (or exterior, for that matter) is not overly decorated and they don't pay much attention to appearance, but that's because they're not trying to mask bad sushi by distracting the customers with looks.
This is now my SECOND favorite sushi place, closely following Kiriko in West L.A. It's a bit pricy, but most good quality sushi spots are.
Service was also great. Our waitress was really attentive and the chefs even made us something special (we were sitting at the bar). It must be my irresistible charm.
This restaurant is def. a nice find. My friend introduced me to it a few days ago. We ate at the bar and I was pretty hungry, so I tried almost everything on the special board. Let's see if I can remember everything....
Fresh Uni that was still moving
Toro
Ono
Scallops
Giant Clam
Spanish Macrel - w/ fried tail
Halibut
Stripped bass
Oyster Shooters
Sweet Shrimp- w/ fried head
I think there were a couple more, but I can't remember.
The price wasn't that bad and everything was very fresh. A great lunch spot. I heard nights and weekends are busy. I give it 5 stars because the great food and great company.
Just a lil on the 'spensive side, but still worth it. I just ordered nigiri this last time around. The yellowtail and salmon was fresh and tasty. The Japanese scallop was aAiight... not as fresh as I expected. Striped bass was yum. The sweet shrimp was about average... a little on the small side. I tried a friend's sushi pizza and it was meh... about as expected with a more dominant squid flavor. The fresh uni is just always tempting to get, but I just always hear/read that it's not as good as it looks or seems. All for show I guess. If they had uni the size of a bowling ball come out, then I'm game!
Everything was fresh and tasty
Live Sea Urchin!!
Good Sake selection
Sit at the Bar if you can
Pricey
I have come to this place a dozen times bcus my ex-BF lives in San Marino. This place has excellent sushi. I like the live uni whenever available. I like to sit at the sushi bar and order from the special items on the Board. The regular hot food is also good. I don't think I have been disappointed here yet. But, compared to Toro Sushi nearby in Alhambra, I prefer Toro because of its uniqueness in preparation of the nigiri and selection of sashimi. I gave both restaurants five stars.
This is one of our favorite sushi bars. Until a few years ago, the restaurant was merely the bar and four tables - and a LOONG line of patrons waiting to get in. Recently, they expanded to include the unit next door, allowing for 11 or so more tables to be added.
If you're not pressed for time, definitely wait for the sushi bar. Although the regular dinner menu is good, this place is known for the sushi. Regulars know to wait for the space at the bar in front of Yoshi (the owner).
The staff is VERY friendly - in fact, Yoshi's wife is actually one of the servers. If you get lucky enough to have Yoshi as your chef, talk to him about Vegas and golf - his two favorite subjects!
Best on the menu hands down is the albacore (white tuna). Those who are not fans of garlic though should bypass this one. The live uni is also another favorite here. Another one to try is the Yoshida roll!
Very fresh fish. All the rolls were very tasty. I'm definitely coming back and the next time, I'm going to make sure I sit at the sushi bar at Yoshi's station, as I hear he makes great creations not on the menu. The waitress seemed a bit absent-minded. Maybe the dinner rush got to her, but overall, very good food. Will definitely return!
The first time I came here with a friend I went home a did a comic about it. It was so good that we back inside to eat another meal after we said goodbye to a big group of friends we ate there with. The waitress was like " what?? again? why?" It's THAT GOOD.
Albacore and oyster sundae is a must! BEST albacore I've ever had, it melts in your mouth. Halibut is great too, it's top with special spicy green sauce on top. Sweet shrimp is delicious when it's in season, I get one head fried and the other head in miso soup. Everything is fresh!!
Sit at the bar to get the best sushi!!! If you're lucky please sit by Yoshi, he makes the best everything. He is also a very funny guy to talk to.
I've had a lot of sushi and this is definitely my favorite place, it also is a big plus cause I live near it. If I had the money I'd eat here every week :]
I'd like to preface this by saying that we 1) went for lunch 2) went in the middle of the week and 3) had table service. Things would probably have been different (better) had it been bar service on a Friday or Saturday night.
So my friends down in LA have formed a somewhat elitist sushi club - Sushi Snobs*, if I may. I was in town for Christmas and was fortunate enough to tag along to one of their exclusive gatherings after ranting and raving to me about Yoshida for months. Two words - live uni. AMAZING. The toro was fatty as usual and the unagi was standard fare. Was disappointed with the salmon though, which was a little stringy and not as fatty as I'd like. Oyster shooter was so-so, I prefer oysters on the half shell.
All in all, nothing out of the ordinary - pretty standard quality sushi, but I must say that I have relatively high standards for sushi. The live uni is definitely something worth experiencing.
*The aforementioned sushi club has recently disbanded, sadly, due to a falling out between two of its members.
