The wine was good, but the person who worked there basically abandonned us when a middle-aged couple came in. After waiting for a while, I said that I was ready for the next taste, and she didn't hear me. It was awkward. She didn't tell us about any of the wines, and we didn't know it was one of the oldest wineries until we went to Rotta winery, and the pourer there told us what the three oldest were.

The tasting room was in a trailer, and that isn't so important to me, but just for planning purposes, I wouldn't want to picnic there.

While their Pinot Noir is excellent.. it's certainly not enough to excuse the poor and cold service in the tasting room.  Last I checked, this was a tiny trailer likely without many visitors, hospitality should be a no-brainer.

If you are imagining a warm greeting and non-snippy answers during your visit, you'll be sorely mistaken.  The two guys behind the counter seemed as though we were putting them out and possibly ruining their own wine tasting.

I got sucked in by the website that mentioned how the owners had gotten York Mountain names as its own appellation back in the 80's. The drive there was fun, but seeing a trailer at the end of it was not so much. The wines were ok, but their staff was somewhat reserved and while friendly, not very informative. The highlight for me was the chocolate-covered blueberry that was served with the dessert wine. We bought a couple of bottles, but the $4 tasting fee was not waived. With so many other wineries to choose from in the area, I doubt I'll be going back.

The mind reels with questions.  York requires a commitment.  Unlike all of the wineries that are along the main road, York resides on top of a mountain, hidden in a dense forest of trees, separated by a winding, beautifully scenic road.  The journey is aesthetically pleasing.  You will meet an old colonial house.  This, too, is charming.  But, then you are directed to what looks like a trailer for the tastings.  Like I said, the mind reels.  Why on earth are they sitting on this historic property, the oldest winery in Paso Robles, and having their tastings in what is unmistakably a trailer?

As for the wine, I cannot say this is their saving grace.  Nothing seizes me.  I think it is their pinot that had me befuddled.  It just tastes weird, which should never describe the oh-so-elegant pinot grape.  Their zin is okay, but there are scores of Paso Robles wineries that probably have a more impressive one, not least of all, Zenaida.  Peachy Canyon is famous for a solid, albeit hardly exciting zin.  Get that one.  The merlot is tasty, but it is kind of pricey for what it is.  They do have a fabulous muscat that jumps at you with personality.  You get to try a cabernet blueberry chocolate with the dessert wine and if you have a fierce sweet tooth like me, you can promptly go to the counter and buy a bag, along with a bag of pinot cherry chocs.  I doubt I will come back here, however, unless they renovate because neither the venue nor wines on the whole have me hook, line, and sinker.

Love this place, first off, they are totally dog friendly, they LOVE dogs. Also, it's just a wee trailer tasting room set on a gorgeous vineyard with big trees and picnic tables. Secondly, they have a port that is to DIE for, yea it's $50 but totally worth it. Additionally they carry my favorite varietal, Albarino. This is one of the few places we hit up that has Pinot Noir.
The tastings cost a fee but *one* tasting per group is waived if you purchase a few bottles.
I hear some grumblings in the area because York is one of the oldest wineries in the area, but has been sold a few times as of the past couple years. I can't fault anyone for selling or buying this place because from my point of view (that of a wine consumer only) the product is awesome. We actually went to York because I'm from PA and my friends used to live on York St in SoCal, so there's not always a rhyme or reason for things. Check it out for yourself!

The oldest winery on the Central Coast and , I believe, the third oldest in California. Reds are best here, though ever since Martin-Weyrich took it over, the ambience and style of the wines have changed....not necessarily for the better.
