i'm a huge fan of this place and of their jenny rolls. it is grilled salmon with lemon slices on top and for a really good price!!! $4.95. i crave it haha
i really like that this place is inexpensive but you get good portions! of course, it also tastes good and fresh! great combo. it's a bit small so you should come early if you dont want to wait. i never really had to wait for a table but i never went on the wknds, so i'm not sure how wknds are.
also the owners of the place (two bothers) and the wait staff are all very nice too. if you come often enough they greet you with familiarity and that's always nice.
the decor is unique too. they have nice cartoon drawings hung all over their walls and a tv that is always showing some kind of anime. -

I live in Oakland and drive over to mid-BFE, San Mateo, whenever I get a hankering for ramen (HIMAWARI and on occasion, Santa Ramen). When I don't feel like paying toll, trekking 880-S, 92 and 101, you'll find me frantically looking for ramen nearby.
Yojimbo is a cute, cozy hole-in-the-wall. The walls are painted with various pop culture figures and if you're lucky, the tele is playing a Miyazaki film like "Howl's Moving Castle."
We decided on the ramen combo:
- pork ramen plus tuna handroll
- pork ramen plus choice of 2 special rolls ($7.95 or less)
Sadly, my search for local ramen continues. INSTANT NOODLES! urgh.
I could have easily purchased some instant ramen added bean sprouts, green onion, a well down boiled egg (my yolk was greenish yellow - overdone -- game over) and sliced pork at a fraction of the cost.
The sushi portion of the combo was delicious and fresh.
The short: ramen 2 stars because it was edible while the accompanying sushi garners an additional star. I won't be back for the instant noodle but once I'm over this letdown, I'll give the sushi a go. -

Reason why I am giving it a 3 stars is because the noodles are instant. :\
If the noodles were homemade egg noodles, I would give it 5 stars hand down! (they should REALLY consider this BTW)
BF took me here after he went with a friend and told me it was really good, from the looks of the pics, I was anxious and curious to taste it myself, so I was pretty pumped to come here.
First impression as I walked in was extremely original, creative, homey feeling, and everyone was polite. They were playing Spirited Away on the TV so that's a plus on my book. :P
I really enjoyed the hand anime paintings all over the walls, they were nice to look at as we waited for our server.
Our waitress was really nice and attentive to our needs, she gave us a lil pot with brewing tea in the middle which I found endearing and cute.
I had the pork miso ramen and the BF had the chicken spicy ramen combo with a side of Cali rolls.
Cali rolls were good but I've had better, I was more so looking forward to the ramen!
The bowl was decent sized, not too big and not too small. The broth was nice and thick to my liking and also not too salty. I'm a HUGE fan of onions so I thought it was awesome that big chunks were in my ramen because I love crunchy cooked onions. (mmmm *heart*)
The pork was a lil salty but good! Went really well with the ramen itself and the egg was not freshly boiled, but eh, can't complain too much about that.
Before we got our ramens, our waitress gave us a complimentary Kimchi for me and the BF, I've NEVER had it before and I don't think I will again TBH...lol. Didn't know what I was eating and the flavor just didn't sit right with me.
Over all the experience was good, the food was good for the most part and we had plenty to take home. Will definitely come back again, but we might need to find a ramen shop that does fresh noodles. -

This review is for my second encounter here.
I looked on the website and ordered
1) Leftover roll $7.95
2) Super CA roll $5.50
That's a total of $14.77 including 9.87% tax.
When I arrived, I was charged about $17. I don't know why. Maybe they didn't update the site with new prices? I was in a hurry anyways.
After the girl swiped my card, she offered me a salad ON THE HOUSE. I was like YAY. And as i realized, was it actually on the house? Because those missing $2 probably covered for that salad. That's why I'm docking 2 stars, false advertising.
Other than that, the food was good.
For the leftover roll, I got something similar to a 49er's roll. It was a roll consisting of mango and tuna, topped with salmon and lemon. It was very yummy. Though, I hate lemon sushi on my sushi!
The Super CA roll consists of a CA roll topped with baked eel. It was alright.
One thing I do like about this place is that their rolls are not GIGANTIC like Sushi House and super messy like New Sushi King. Instead, the rolls are good sizes and very neat.
Oh, the salad was not good neither. It's suppose to cost $2.50 by itself (says the website). Not yummy...no tomatoes. Just lettuce and dressing.. -

I like this place a lot. Every time I have been I always end up walking out satisfied with my experience. The have some really friendly workers and great service. The vibe is a casual one that left me feeling comfortable with my surroundings. This is a small restaurant. despite its size it has a cute atmosphere with hand painted anime characters on the wall and usually an anime movie playing in the background. The food I had was excellent and delivered quick. There is better Japanese food out there but I think this hole in the wall does a good job and comes in a tight charming little package that sold me after my first visit.

Would have given decent review until this last visit.
It's a rainy Friday evening and I was too lazy to make dinner. Took both kids here figuring we'll get some ramen to sustain them.
Now I know the ramen was cheap and it seemed familiar but my hunch was confirmed when they sat us near the kitchen. Wait for it...
Instant noodle!!!
Oh well. Whatever. Kids are hungry. Friday night. Fine. Will pay the $10.
Order came and realized the ramen was spicy. Didn't know so I asked them to if I can send order back for non-spicy.
Was told "no. But you can order another one".
Wow. Definitely my fault for ordering cheap stuff, and not paying attention but I can't imagine how much money you can lose to make another instant noodle that you just charged me $10 for.
Not coming back here again. There's better places for better bento, sushi, nigri and skip the ramen! -
Review from jun k.
A big fan of either of the dragon rolls and the yojimbo roll.
This place has decent prices, portions, and service. I love the cool and whimsical art on the walls (which are all done by one of the guys who works there).
There's not THAT much variety though, and with the exception of the 49er roll, there were no rolls topped with salmon. :(
The genmai tea is pretty great here. A weird thing though is that their handrolls aren't.. handrolls, but just normal sushi. Kind of strange. -

You will not be disappointed! Fresh ingredients and a mom & pop feel. They even have chef choice rolls made from what ever hey have left overs of.
Do not come here is you expect over the top over priced fancy rolls like Sushi to Dai For or Ozumo. This is just a down to earth casual mom and pop sushi joint with anime.
After you eat here, head of to the Forbidden Island http://www.yelp.com/bi... -

Yojimbo is my favorite spot for Ramen and Bento Boxes!
LOVE:
+ the vibe - their sushi chefs and staff are so welcoming and friendly
+ that they play anime and K/J-pop simultaneously
+ the amazing original art all around the walls
+ they recently expanded their seating!
+ Very reasonable prices!
Tips:
- It's still a tiny joint, but that's what makes it so precious to me =) Expect a wait of 2-5 mins on a good day.
- closed ALL of Sundays =*[
My favorite things to order:
Seafood ramen + poke salad + Salmon Bento Box + Ramune drink for two = PERFECT. -
Review from Mike L.
Not the best ramen I've had but pretty decent. There aren't a lot of places to get ramen in Oakland or Alameda. I was hungry the time I went so I had a bowl of their combination ramen, and split 2 rolls with friends (combo of 2 $7.95 value rolls for I think 12, I had a catapillar and tiger roll) . The broth of the ramen was pretty flavorful and the rolls were a decent size and tasted alright.

A very good choice for a quick, filling Japanese meal. Sushi has always been fresh. Love the 49er roll (slices of salmon atop a California roll, and topped w/ the thinnest slice of lemon). The kids love the Chicken teriyaki, and the tempura is decent. Portions are Huge, so if you're hungry, this is the place.
Only reason for the missing star is that seats located near the bathroom aren't so great for obvious reasons.
Anyway, do give Yojimbo a try. Food is good and the people there are nice. Great original artwork on the walls too. -

Castro Valley, CA
Alameda is the unabashedly proud home of some of the most overrated sushi restaurants. Yojimbo does not flaunt the best sushi I have ever had, nor does it come close to a humble bronze. However it does house menu options like 5 rolls for $30 and a $7.95 bento box with heaping portions. Even the biggest eater will have leftovers from their chicken teriyaki bento box.
Without a doubt Yojimbo is worth a try; it has quickly become a default for my friends and me when we have absolutely no preference of what to eat.
Do not come to Yojimbo with the highest of expectations. It is great for a spur of the moment sushi crave, or a filling meal [tomorrow's lunch included], but not for the sushi connoisseur. -

First time here since sushi house was so packed as usual, so we decide to give Yojimbo a try. My first impression of Yojimbo was small from outside I actually drove past it maybe because it was dark. After we went inside it was bigger anyway we ordered some Ramen and their Yojimbo roll as well as Rainbow. Luckily we don't have to wait too long for the food to come. Our Ramen was pretty good and their sushi was fresh service was okay will come back again!

Small sake bar type setting. Menu is not too large and they carry basic sushi and teriyaki. Had a craving for ramen so I decided to give em a try. Ordered the spicy beef with tempura combo. Compared what I had back in the islands this place wasnt too great. BTW when I say Islands I mean Hawaii and in the food court of a mall. LMFAO because it was the best bowl of ramen I ever had.
First off the bowl was really hot but the broth wasn't, WTF! Good amount of noodles paired with various bits and pieces of beef and veggies. The flavor was there but the quality of the ingredients lacked. I think they used brisket but it came out grey and dry!? Veggies, no problem. Noodles were cool, portion size was decent and cooked just right. Maybe next time I'll just order plain ramen in the broth.
The tempura is also cool. Abundant and fresh, 4 pieces of fresh sweet shrimp along with squash and carrots ( 4 pieces also), battered not panko
The Yojimbo ramen had better flavor. The waitress actually mentioned it was the most popular. This is a pork based soup. I agree it does taste better than the spicy broth.
sushi is ok, red dragon has a nice spice to the tuna
Service is not bad considering she was by herself waiting on at least 8 tables. So chance for improvement here.
I would come back for lunch

Arrived for dinner at 8pm, Got seated Immediately to a wet table. 10 minutes go by with no water and we had to ask for a menu. The rude waitress refused to look our way and I literally had to flag her down for a menu. She Said sorry , we have a large party in the back. Way to make us feel totally unimportant!! The food took 30 minutes to come out. We ordered 5 pc sashimi , 3 special rolls and miso soup . Promptly at 8:55 when we weren't even done eating . The waitress plops the check on our table and says , " we close 9, you pay now". Smh.. The food was pretty good , that's the only reason I gave 3 stars. If the service was better , I would have given at least 4. Come here if you are not starving , trying to impress a date and don't mind the wait.

Portions and prices are smaller but quality is superb. They have a great chirashi as well. You can definitely get by spending $10 and definitely under $15 but get a decent meal.
There's usually no wait which is also great! -

I can't believe how big their portions are! It's very reasonably priced, and a cheaper alternative than Sushi House. I also like how I can add a side of California rolls or gyoza to my ramen.
I had their Yojimbo ramen, and the pork flavor was very pronounced. The gyoza was not as spectacular, and I probably wouldn't get it again. -

Alameda, CA
The BEST value in Alameda. Good quality sushi, awesome service and kick ass price. They are accommodating for take out as well. Sushi combo C is my favorite. Anywhere that can pull out high quality sashimi and rolls for two with a bill total of $22 has my vote. We eat here weekly and have NEVER had a bad meal. PLUS the waitress is adorable...bonus :)

Are you kidding me!?
The whole reason I wanted to try this place is because my friend raved and raved about how amazing the rolls were and I LOVE sushi. I might not have a chance to review all the sushi I've ate in my life but salmon sashimi would be my last meal on earth! (Oh hey, I think I said that on my about me section haha)
I'm sorry to give such a bad review but perhaps I just happen to get a complete different chef than everyone else including my friends that just love the place. Though the rolls that my brother/I received were so SKINNY it was just SLIGHTLY bigger than the size of my THUMB! I couldn't believe it. It was worst than an appetizer. I should have snapped pictures with my thumb against it because I was in shock. The fish alone wasn't mind blowing fresh either, it was just fish.
I understand that sushi shouldn't be huge anyway but it was ridiculous. Spent over $60 and wasn't even anywhere near feeling somewhat satisfied or curb my hunger. I would have been better off going to Sushi House down a few blocks!
Maybe my expectations were just a tad bit too high since my friends raved about it so much but I'm just going to believe that I got the wrong chef and wouldn't want to go back again.
Over all, the place is tiny, we were seated right next to the bathroom but it wouldn't matter where you sit if you were inside because the bathroom is just 4 steps away from you. The fish was just fish, didn't felt it was extremely fresh and blew me away. Then again, I think the amount of fish I had in each roll was too tiny to really even make such a statement.
The service on the other hand, they were really nice and offered miso soup/salad "on the house" for us. I think the one star i'm giving them is really because they were nice and attentive to us. Even though we were the ONLY guest there. It's just unfortunate their sushi gets no stars from me. -

I work near by and always go to Yojimbo when I work. They are always friendly and have great customer service. Having said that I do enjoy their sushi rolls and to me always have good portions. I find they are priced well and clean which isn't always the case at other places.
I don't hestitate to pick up my lunch there (take out) and love their personal service. They always call me by name and I appreciate that alot! -

yO JimbO! Your sushi and ramen is bomb dot com dot org dot yumm.
This place looks and is pretty tiny but you know the old saying small things come in a big package. Well the same concept applies here too. Haah. They are little in size but there food is yummbo-licious.
Ordered the Miso soup base Seafood Ramen with Cali Roll. The ramen comes in a bigggg bowl with lots of veggies, fish pieces and shirp. And their california roll looked like it was a little bit on steroids.
Ooh and don't be fooled. They say the closing time is at 10pm, but I think not. Because as 9:45pm was approaching I was franticallystuffing my face trying to finish me meal, but then a party of 2 walked in and was seated. So my guess...come right before closing time and you will still be served! -
Review from David C.
Alot of people in the Alameda area hyped this place up as the better and cheaper sushi house. Sadly, this was not the case. Upon entering, we were seated in the 'back house'. It was an annex not connected to the main room. This made for trouble because no one in the front house could see customers in the back, and the single waiter (already shortstaffed) only popped in to check on us every 20 minutes. Probably 20 minutes after getting seated, our order was taken. Bad sign number 2: they were out of an item that was on the menu... Bad planning and execution. We both settled for the chirashi. When it arrived, we were less than satisfied with its portion.
PROTIP: Prices are cheap, but expect what you pay for. -

Cannot believe I had not reviewed this place until now. This place is bomb. Great sushi and really reasonable. Love the Teriyaki chicken here too. Their portions are huge too. Love this place. Favorite roll, the juhee roll, although I think they renamed it. I really wish they were open on Sundays :(

Chirashi. Got super downgraded and smaller. Doesn't taste as good as it used to. The fish doesn't look as fresh anymore either. Super sad and disappointed! Yojimbo used to be my go-to place for sushi and sashimi but it isn't anymore.
Miso Soup. This was just salt and water and miso, nothing special. Had a bit of tofu in it, but overall just disappointment.
I think Yojimbo changed management, it's owned by Koreans now I think instead of Japanese people as it was before, so that might have an effect on the food quality seeing as the bulgogi used to be disgusting but now it is edible. Sorry I can't say the same about their Japanese fare. So sad and disappointed!

Sad. Yojimbo is not so yummy anymore. Portions have gotten a lot smaller, I think the prices went up and they no longer have complimentary salad. Ramen was from the package...I could see them open the package of noodles and add the seasoning packet (I'll admit the ramen was pretty good with the additions they made but still...).
I would probably rate Yojimbo 3 stars, but after such high expectations from previous visits I have to knock it down to 2. Probably won't be back, which is really sad since it was at the top of our list for sushi.Listed in: Cheap Eats

Alameda, CA
I feel bad giving Yojimbo such a poor rating, especially since I loved it the first few times I came here. It's just not what it used to be. Along with new colorful and vibrant menus, they began skimping out on complimentary bowls of salad and miso soups. Not only that, they took off their takoyaki from the menu. (it was just a seasonal item, but based on demand they should've kept it). ((Lame!!))
Not only that, combined with the mediocre service (they really want to close on time) and quality of food, there's no real point of coming here unless you didn't want to go a little farther to find better ramen. Speaking of their ramen, I didn't want to believe it at first, since I was in a honeymoon of love with Yojimbo when i first came here, their ramen noodles taste of the deep fried prepacked variety. Shame!!
The sushi isn't any better, you can find better rolls at Sushi House. Their only saving grace is the art on the walls, the movies they play on the tv, and the kpop overhead. -
Review from Jennie P.
You can still read out "dynamite cheesesteaks" on their business sign outside!
Anyway.. this place is TINY! Like petite, miniature, little, non-huge. Max capacity is like 16 so if you're claustrophobic, don't come here!
Food wise.. this place is no good. My dude ordered their ramen and did they really grab a package of ramen from the back room? YES. Threw on some veggies and pulled pork and called it a day. They didn't have much condiments to put in the ramen which was kinda odd. The sushi we ordered were blah.. I probably had 4 pieces and started picking at the rest of it.
And they don't serve alcohol here. WTF? -

This is such an awesome local sushi joint! The sushi chefs are actually Japanese! That's a great sign. I started coming here when they just opened up and weren't very well-known. Now the secret is out and I have to fight other locals to grab a table in this tiny restaurant. I'm happy to do it though!
Something I love about this spot is that there is hand made art on the walls. They are absolutely wonderful and interesting. Some are so simple and adorable while others are amazingly detailed. During one of my first visits here, we asked the (only) waitress (at the time) if they would sell the paintings. Unfortunately they said they weren't for sale. We found out that one of the chefs painted them all! Very impressive! It made us want them even more.
Now for the food - YUM! Their ramen dishes are large and very tasty. I've tried the pork ramen and tempura ramen. The pork ramen was a bit salty but still flavorful. The tempura ramen is insane. They give you so much tempura!
I always order their leftover roll. It's basically a mystery roll that is made with whatever they have in the kitchen at the moment and depends on how the chef feels. You always get something different and it's plain fun to get a surprise. Once, I was a bit underwhelmed, and got salmon with lemon slices in a roll. It was still good, but not worth $10+. More often I get a great roll, either interesting or full of fish and more expensive items, like uni.
Their sashimi appetizer comes in a small portion. However their bento boxes, ramen and salads are large. The service is always fantastic. I feel great coming here and supporting them! -

It's true, the portions are tiny. On the other hand, when I'm paying less than $3 for a salmon roll, I would guess that, yes, I'm not getting a full roll! If you want more, order two! But, they have great, unusual rolls, that are still really inexpensive but BIG! Also, really reasonable prices, and a HUGE portion of seaweed in the seaweed salad. The place is little, but I like that about it. It is not fancy so don't come here for fancy. It is inexpensive, fun, and I think the sushi was quite good! I totally recommend it.

My favorite roll from here is the You Don't Wanna Know Me Roll.
I always order baked rolls whenever I go to a sushi joint.
I like ordering the Leftover Roll because I like being surprised.
The Sobber Roll is tasty.
The Food & Service is really good.
The only thing I don't like about this place is that it is really small.
I have been here countless times.
I would recommend Yojimbo. -

TOP RAMEN-STYLE RAMEN + POOR-TASTING BROTH = NO LOVE
Just because "ramen" pops up a lot in reviews here doesn't mean it's good. Gosh darn shucks, we came here looking/hoping for good ramen. We left very disappointed. The ramen is exactly like the top ramen some of us used to eat in college on a tight budget, except this ramen costs much more.
Sure the ramen portions are huge, but the broth is poor quality. I can't believe I'm actually complaining that there's too much stuff in the soup but it's true. I guess I'm more of a ramen purist - if the broth is good (keep it simple!), you don't need to mask the flavor and content of the broth with TONS of onions (lots of white and green), carrots, seaweed, etc. Just give me good broth! Underneath it all, the broth just wasn't quality ramen broth.
On another note, I did order one roll - the Yojimbo roll. It tasted great, but the portion of the roll felt a bit meager, just the opposite of the ramen problem. Oh well.
Service was very friendly - perhaps a return for the non-ramen items on the menu?
p.s. For those of you who don't care for the spicy broth, order "miso" instead. Otherwise, the broth still comes spicy and I didn't care for that. For whatever it's worth, neither the spicy nor the miso broth hit the spot. -

So I feel like maybe I just went here on a bad day because I've ready SOO MANY good reviews on the fish quality and chirashi here. The service was good and it was a cute little spot. But the food was really mediocre for mee. The fish quality was not great. I received little slivers of fish in my chirashi.
The simple rolls were good, like a basic tuna roll. Their fish just isn't good enough quality to eat alone. -

Alameda, CA
Mann, I don't understand the people who come here, it's like they've never ventured outside of Alameda for delicious sushi and/or ramen.
1. Their sushi falls apart so easily
2. Tuna doesn't even look like tuna, looks like...ginger on the side.
3. Ramen, if I can quote Jennie P.
"did they really grab a package of ramen from the back room? YES. Threw on some veggies and pulled pork and called it a day."
People will say the noodles are amazing, those are the people that eat instant noodles for a living. C'mon people, go to San Jose!
3. Chirashi doesn't look too appetizing either. Ten dollar chirashi? I don't think so..
4. The water was warm..weirdly warm..

This place is literally a hole in the wall. When I first stepped in I wasnt sure if there was any table seating but there was. There were no more than 5 tables in the restaurant that dont really cater to large parties. The service was ok and the food was pretty good and cheap!
My picks:
1)Chirashi- comes with mixed salmon over rice for $9.99.
For the price it definately worth it. Its not amazing but a good deal. There was an assortment of salmon sashimi over a bed of lettuce and rice.
2)Red Dragon Roll- comes with spicy tuna and tempura for $7.95.
This roll is a bit on the skimpy side but I came here for the chirashi and ramen so its A-OK on my list.
3)Pork Ramen- comes with spicy noodle soup and ramen for $7.95.
Its a huge bowl of ramen! The broth was lacking in flavor and the noodle can be a little firmer. Its good but this isnt a ramen house so they deserve some credit.
This place makes a good lunch spot if you want something chill with good and cheap eats.Listed in: Sushi Sensei Attacks

Tried the ramen here because all the reviews said how amazing it was. Went here around 6 and they already ran out of pork! So We had to order chicken and shrimp tempura. Why would you put tempura in ramen? It gets all soggy and the breading is floating around in the broth. The chicken was pretty salty as well. The noodles itself was pretty tasty. Maybe the pork would have been better if they had it! There is nice art work on the walls like a joker painting.
To end the night, we got food poisoning and threw it all up...
A complete bad experience. -

This is actually my current go-to sushi restaurant! I probably order their Salmon Donburi at least twice a week, through sickness and in health (although I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be eating raw fish when I'm sick).
Prices are completely decent, and there are some pretty decent rolls. Atmosphere has a cute, quaint, hole-in-the wall feel. Service is really good, and the location is right off the main ParkSt. Area in Alameda.Listed in: I Like it RAWWW

Took my wife here on a slow Saturday last week, and first thing i noticed it had a rotten odor about the place. Then were served rolls with rotten shrimp and spoiled fish. I went here a month ago and it was on point. Mind you i did go with a group of white people and when i took my spouse (2x black) it was a different experience. They served everything nasty and stared at us like outsiders.

I've been to Yojimbo 2 times and I'd happily go again.
Their sushi is fresh and affordable. The only complaint I have about it is that their sashimi and nigiri pieces are tiny.
The best thing about this restaurant is the drawings on the wall. I've heard that the owner is the artist, and you can see a lot of cool black and white (presumably) ink pieces.
Definitely worth going if you want cheap sushi and a cozy atmosphere (it's pretty tiny, but I've only been there on weekdays, so there's usually no wait).
Plus, the guys who work in the kitchen are super nice!
