8 reviews for Yo San University
This place is seriously saving my sanity and potentially my life. I was diagnosed with a 4mm pituitary tumor which has been wreaking havoc on my lady parts. No ovulation. No period. Plus wild fluctuations in my hormones. For 8 months. I was feeling like an unnatural woman. 8 months of western medicine did nothing for me. After 1 acupuncture visit and 4 days of the herbs my doctor prescribed, I was bleeding like a stuck hog. My point, other than to gross out anybody with dangling parts who happens to be reading this and also happens to not know that all women bleed or have bled once a month at some point?
These people are saving my life. On the reals.
Oh and they cleared up my allergies and sinuses. I ain't breathed this good since the year 2K.
It's not true that you have to see an intern. My doctor is not an intern (I think my medical situation is too serious to trust to an intern.) You can see a "real" doctor for 70 bucks or a supervised intern for 50. I hear the interns are just as good. Just not for me. Maybe if I was going for back or muscle pain or something....
I love this place. Before 18 months ago, I never had anything to do with Acupuncture and certainly nothing to do with cupping. I actually went to YoSan for other reasons, but shortly after going there, my chronic upper back pain that I had for 25+ years went away in a few months. After that I was going like every 6-8 weeks "for maintenance." It's now 18 months later, but the pain is starting to creep back in. i think i need to go every 2 weeks until the pain is manageable again, then maybe once a month.
Overall, I am so happy with YoSan and so happy to get the opportunity to experience acupuncture and cupping. For me, it's been a real life-saver.
Well, I hate to be the bubble burster of the great reviews, but hey, it's how I feel. I was strongly recommended by my doctor to try Acupuncture and at Yo San. There's good and bad to this review.
The good: the student docs try very hard. I am terrified of needles and they were very nice and calm, which in turn made me calm and hey, those needles not so bad after all.
The bad: 1) Sometimes a needle is put where it shouldn't be apparently and it's a little uncomfortable yelling "hello, anyone out there". 2) The real docs couldn't make up their minds on my different visits. One said that I serious heart problems, the other said I had other problems, and then they even contradicted themselves. Look, I don't expect a miracle but frankly they scared me so much I went back to my regular doctor to get another check up. Turns out, I'm not going to die.
So, will I give acupuncture another try, yes, but not here.
I went here about 10 times.... at first I was attracted to this place because of the low prices (it was $30 when I went)... if you don't mind being a guinea pig for students learning their trade (you get worked on by interns, who are really very good) then it's a great low-cost option for acupuncture.
I think everyone should try acupuncture at least once, and the Community Clinic at Yo San University is always my first recommendation for newbies to the field. Since I have always been interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and I've been a guinea pig at almost every University Clinic in So Cal, Yo San is still my top pick. For example, some of the other clinics I've visited have "rooms" that are only separated by curtains and since an acupuncture visit is like a visit to a M.D., there are things discussed that you don't even want the doctor in front of you to know... not to mention the 4 nearby patients! Yo San's Clinic has separate rooms with doors, so it is more private. There is also a full herbal pharmacy where you have the option of getting "the old school" paper packet of herbs where you brew it into tea at home or "the new school" packaged herbal formula in easy-to-take tablets. * Note: I've always heard that "the old school" method works better and faster. But, if you know you can't stomach funky tasting tea, save yourself the dough and get the tablets.
A few things to know before you go:
1. Even though you have the option of seeing a Licensed Acupuncturist, I always choose to see an Intern. This is a teaching clinic, so you are actually doing them a favor by offering up your health care woes. They are in at least their 3rd year of study at the University, but they are still learning and establishing their technique. If something hurts or is uncomfortable, let them know! They are there to learn. And vice versa, since they are interns, you are getting a terrifically discounted rate for acupuncture... licensed acupuncturists charge $80 and up for an hour (of which they will only be in the room with you maybe 15 min of that hour.) With an intern, you get their undivided attention, and there will always be a licensed acupuncturist/professor supervising them. Even though the trade-off is years of experience, I still choose to see interns for my treatments.
2. First visit is 2 hours and costs $50. This is where you go over your full medical history with the intern and they ask you all sorts of questions where you will probably be saying, "Do they really need to know that?!?" They do... so fess up!
3. Return visits are 1 hour and $30.
4. When I first started getting acupuncture, I would faint when they would put more than 4 needles in me. I've improved much over the years, but if you are a wuss like me, just let the intern know and they will take good care of you.
5. The needles are typically the thickness of a human hair and won't cause you to bleed. When the needle is inserted, it's more of a "sensation" than a "pain." But, if something hurts, or is unbearable, let the intern know!
It's best to pay by cash or check (the clinic applies a service charge for plastic.) There is street parking, but watch the signs... if you are there for your 1st appointment which is 2 hours, beware of the "1 hr pkg" streets. Good luck & have fun!
I've been here at least 15 times and love it. If it was closer to my house I'd go more often but I hate the drive - only 14 miles from me, but the commute takes about an hour each way. I've seen about 6 intern students there and while I have my favorites, I thought they were all good. I have problems from time to time with sinus pain and nothing helps me like acupuncture. The atmosphere is pretty austere, yet pleasant - they usually play soothing Asian music during my treatment, which helps me to relax and thus makes the results better. I love talking to the students because they like talking about TCM and other related spirtitual matters - I love learning new stuff. I'm not a fan of needles at all (have come close to fainting more than once while giving blood) but the needles here have never bothered me and I usually get around 20. The cost is only $30 (another $10 or so for herbs if you need them. They can make the nasty-taking herbs into tablets, which I always have them do as the tea form is unbearable to me). And they've got some free tea (not nasty-tasting!) in the waiting room which is very calming - another plus. I also love the little bookstore next door to the clinic where I got a great ring for applying accupressure to my finger for only $1. After experiencing pain and bruising at Samra U's clinic, I appreciate Yo San more than ever. I always leave in way less pain than when I arrived and I always feel like I learned something new.
I'm a huge fan of Acupuncture and the healing it can bring for everything. I have practiced TCM as my primary form of healthcare since 1994. I discovered Yo San in 2003 and have been going ever since. I've seen interns and doctors here, all of whom have brought me relief. I've gone in for things like a banged knee, stress, migraines, and the flu. I even did a series of Acupuncture Facials with Alexa (ladies, you've GOT to try this - more immediate and noticeable results than a regular facial!) I've seen private doctors in LA & the SF Bay area, but Yo San's clinic provides me the best flexibility with their hours, lots of doctors/interns, and an in house herbalist so I can walk out with my prescription. It's just great.
You can not go wrong with these folks. The best !!! I have chronic phlegm and one treatnment was able to wipe out my symptoms for a few days...where nothing else could. I was able to sing again which I had not been able to do for months. Since it is a chronic problem I will have to make some very big changes in my life...but these folks were the only one's to make it go away completely ...even if only for a few days. Amazing!
