New Year's - first time visit - enjoyable and met expectations. Concur that the buffalo filet was the best piece of meat we tried in our group of three. Sides/ salads were all fine.
"Value" delivers so-so. But the meats, in our opinion, were just a notch below prime. Atmosphere is legit; be sure to go with a friend who loves meet or looking for a fun dining experience.
YO Ranch is a bit of a tourist trap with over the top western theme. All and all though the food quality is pretty darn good. I typically order a filet when I go there and have always been pleased with the meat. It's a bit pricy but again it caters to the tourists and thus is allowed to be.
Their lunch specials are actually pretty reasonable and compare to TGI Friday or Cili's in cost but with much better quality food items.
I recently had the most yummy Rib Eye at the YO. It was perfectly cooked very rare on the inside -- kind of a Pittsburg! I had great mashed potatos and gravy, which I don't normally get but the gravy was really good. And Asparagus, perfectly cooked and fresh. Then I had a little pecan pie that was homemade and the best ending. Could not eat the entire steak so I took it home and made a sliced rib eye salad the next day. I often get the Buffallo here and it is terrififc too but This is THE BEST Rib Eye Ihave had in Dallas in a long time. Time for another trip --- the paio is nice when not too hot. I have also eaten at the bar here and that can be fun.
Fairly cool place, somewhat conservative. It's a steakhouse so that's to be expected. The service was above average and the menu is unique. Some game dishes. I had the bison filet. Expensive but very very good. I would go back. The salads and apps were good as well.
I was very hesitant to eat here, based on a couple of Yelp reviews. But, my traveling companion had been here before and insisted.... Plus, we were a few blocks from my first choice.... So, I caved in....
The interior design is your usual little buck-a-roo cowboy joint. I loved the high wooden plank ceilings, the dining chairs with the lone star carved in the back, but was a little put off by the stuffed deer above the bar.
I opted for the wild greens salad with garlic cilantro vinaigrette dressing. I really loved the flavor of the dressing. I was dying to have buffalo, but decided to play it safe with filet mignon stuffed with smoked mozzarella. The chili chipotle sauce was just the right amount of hot and I loved it's flavor. Our meal was excellent, this is a really great place to eat, I loved it!
I absolutely love Y.O. Steakhouse! My boyfriend and I eat here pretty frequently and we've never had a bad experience. The atmosphere is great and the service is, too. Our favorite menu items are Sal's Soft Tacos for an appetizer (filled w/ queso and wild boar sausage) and the buffalo filet mignon for an entree.
food network labels it as "one of the best steaks in the nation" - really?
the JOINT:
- downtown dallas
- upscale steak house indoors and out
- rustic tables, great wine bar, and appropriate decor
- very professional wait staff
the GRUB:
- the place specializes in game meat - so +1 star for originality
- my dish included the cut of meat that food network endoreses as one of the nations best steaks: BUFFALO FILLET MIGNON - and i will agree, it was mighty heavenly... sweet, tender, medium rare, lean, and tasty.
- also had the quail with some sort of balsamic reduction - it was delicious, but not as exotic as i expected
- and finally the elk chop, to me tasted like lamb - but thats a good thing... great cut of chop, meaty and done right.
- micro greens with baby snap peas and wild rice
the SQUEEZE:
- pricey - but you are paying for originality and service... i would consider this an upscale steak house...
its a 4 star performance... but the price per value didnt quite make it a 5 star joint.
Based on my $24 Duck dish (flavorful but undesirably chewy) served with about a tablespoon of rice and over-sauced vegetables, this place is way over priced, and quite underwhelming.
I give it a 'Meh' at most.
Even their candles in the middle of the tables are fake...Probably the best example of a restaurant that way over promises and drastically under delivers. YO Ranch seems like it should reside in some C-grade theme park, as they take the rustic western theme too far when the wait staff wear bolo ties and sheriff badges. Steakhouse fare with "exotic" meats like venison and elk. Waiters try to super size your meal by adding a jumbo lobster tail or upgrade you to their signature such as buffalo fillet minion. Avg. meat entree is ~$30.
Meat is med-low quality, salads seem like they were made/dressed in the morning, ambiance is conventioneer-sheek (corporate logo polos abound).
My recommendation is to round up your posse and head for greener pastures.
Our once a year trip to Dallas Texas landed us at the Y. O. Ranch one very late night. We (a couple of business friends) were bored, hungry, tired of room service, and did i say hungry. It was 10:00 and nothing seemed open. When I checked the local restaurant listings, the only places opened seemed to be bars and fast food joints and one thing i hate is late night munching at a fast food joint. (That's totally high school-*smirk*) So we ended up walking up Market street where most of the restaurants in downtown dallas are found and happened to walk into the Ranch. They were the only ones still serving food at 10:45. We had no clue what to really expect but the night was almost over so we didn't care too much.
The ambiance, well, at that time, it was pretty much just dark and empty except for a few tables here and there finishing up their last glasses of wine and paying their bills.
The waiter was really nice. He let us take our time as we scoured through the somewhat bland menu. Appetizers, basic salads and soups, and sides on one side, followed by steaks on the other. I made the mistake of ordering a porterhouse. I always have the same problem with a porterhouse. Some parts are tough, other parts are great, i could never finish it and when i'm out of state, my dog's just too far to fetch. They have this smoked baked potato. Sounds great. Tastes....smoked starch just doesn't seem to run well with my taste buds. It reminds me of a dog biscuit. (and yes i've tried em). The macaroni(shells)n'cheese was killer but by the time i was done with it, the grease really hit me hard. My friend had this fajita or taco appetizer thing. It was one of the most unappetizing plates i've ever seen. It didn't taste much better than it looked.
So over all, I gave them 2 stars for the food and 2 stars for being open that late and having great staff. I had to subtract 1 star for being a little over priced.
Well, I started with a FROZEN wedge salad. Yes, you read that right. My lettuce wedge was frozen. Then, our shrimp appetizer was quite literally swimming in a pool of oil, so greasy that it was almost inedible. My husband's steak was tough around the edges, but better towards the middle. And although our waiter was extremely polite and professional, I can't say the same for the rest of the staff. One of the other waitresses actually barged up to our table mid-meal and started bombarding my husband with questions about his tattoos. I had to ask her TWICE to at least wait until after we were done eating to start with twenty questions. After complaining to our waiter about her, he did give us a $25 gift certificate, but I have to admit that we won't be back. When we go out for a nice meal, we expect much more than what we got at YO.
Excellent for their wild game entrees. We celebrated Valentine's here and ordered the buffalo filet mignon with the jalapeno bacon cornbread and the smoked beef/wild boar sausage soft tacos. They give you a 10 ounce buffalo filet mignon steak which is grilled to perfection with a special blend of spices. Other dishes that we really wanted to try included the New Zealand Elk Chops which are topped with a sweet cherry molasses glaze, the Axis Venison Medallions, and the Grilled Quail. They also offer the classic steaks such as the NY Strip, Ribeye, for the less adventurous. Service is extremely friendly, there's an extensive wine list, and parking is free in the neighboring lot. Definitely worth checking out if you like steakhouses and game meats.
