Wow, im the 1st? ok I'll take that. I go to the Y for a few reasons. 1st being that I have been going to Y's pretty much since I was 4 and taking swimming lessons. 2nd, I need to keep myself in good shape. Being so tall, weight piles on and secretly disperses its self through out my lower half. and 3rd, its NOT a fashion show. People dont get done up to go here.
THAT being said... this one in particular, could use some funding. its a little beat up, but it gets the job done. The staff are really great and helpful. There are yoga, pilates, and spinning classes, all of which i need to try. and the best part.. they have a pool. again, i need to try that as well.
Over all, Im greatful that  its  there and even more so, that its in walking distance of my crib. Thanks for being there YMCA, after all these years.

We love this "Y". Our family has been coming here for over 40 years - many of our family and friends learned to swim in this pool.  It was a wonderful place for me to come to as a child and I returned when I had children of my own and find that it's better than ever.

First of all: it's a "Y" with a heart of gold. Every single staff member is absolutely amazing! I don't want to name names, because I would hate to miss one - suffice to say that the "Y" only has the best people there - they truly care about you, your family and your friends even.

My son has attended their summer and winter camps for 5 years and loved each one! The counselors care about each camper and make sure that all have a great time. There's even a member doctor who volunteers his time to be the camp doctor. That told me a lot. It should tell you a lot, too. This is the kind of place where you go because it's great and then you want to help because you feel like you own it.

Check it out. You will not regret it. There is babysitting available, lots of programs for people of all ages and their hours are convenient to members  - even open on holidays. This "Y" has a very dedicated staff and it shows. We XOXOXOXOXOXO this "Y".

A large, amazing indoor pool! That's my favorite thing about this Y. It's a pretty tiny facility overall, but has a friendly staff who's never once made fun of my leg warmers. Even when I wear them swimming.

I finally had to quit the Y and start going to the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks pool because the Y's pool is just too darned warm. I'm sure 86 degrees is great for senior citizens doing water jogging. However, for someone trying to squeeze in a mile during a lunch break, it's awful. My first review said that 86 degrees was not unbearable. I have changed my mind.

The East Valley YMCA is the little Y that "can". The definitive place to go for swimming, this small gym, just nestled off of the 170 North, has all the charm of a small town with many eclectic classes that a big city gym offers without the attitude.

You say you want to learn to Belly dance? No problem. Family Belly Dance even? Sure. In fact this YMCA has an extensive list of dance classes including Hip-Hop, Ballroom, Latin Groove, Ballet, Latin Groove and Cardio Salsa. There is even Music Theater Dance (what the heck is that anyway? Put on my list for 2008, must try.)  For those whose leanings are more spiritual there are Yoga basics, Kundalini Yoga, Meditation and Tai Chi.

For the purely athletic types, go for Boot Camp, Palates, Abs Strength training and more, blah, blah, blah, the list goes on. The really great thing about THIS YMCA in particular is that the workout room is rarely crowded and you will always find an open Elliptical machine (or treadmill, pick your torture device), plus there are TVs installed to make the process less painful. The one drawback is the lack of free weights in the weight room but there are up to date nautilus machines, including some that have computers that remember your progress.  Personal trainers will help you get started and because this is a small gym they are more relaxed and will give you a lot more attention.  You say this gym is all glory? Well, did I mention that over 75% of all the people that go here are over 60 years old?  Hope it doesn't bother you. It doesn't me.

The pool is the real reason I come here though.  Twenty five feet in length and enclosed in a glass covering (think green house), it is one of the longest pools the Y boasts. Lap swim is held at three times per day: from 6-10am, 12-4pm and 8-9pm daily and this will satisfy the most harried person's schedule.  There has never been a wait for a lane any time I have come to swim. (I come approximately three to four times per week.) Picture this: the sun is shining down on you as you swim for say, forty-five minutes of bliss in a pool that's heated to a nice temperature. No one to bother you. No road rage, no overly crowded stores, work, home, kids, nothing, just your own breathing. Folks seem to appreciate this as well because they are usually courteous when sharing lanes.

The cherry on the top of this sundae is that there has NEVER been a wait when I have gone at any time.  The staff is super friendly, relaxed, and will never tell you to stop swimming after 30 minutes. Note: I am also a member of the Hollywood YMCA.  Every time I have gone to swim there I have had to wait 15-20 minutes to get a lane. The limit on each lane is 30 minutes.  The first time I went swimming I swam into a used Band-Aid! Gross! Note to self, keep mouth closed when swimming. Looking back on my Hollywood Y experiences thus far, every time I go to the Hollywood Y I feel a bit anxious after leaving. I don't know if it's the crowds that feed my claustrophobic tendencies or if people in Hollywood are just in a real hurry and LOUD. Maybe it's because there's like a million kids running around there.  But every time I walk out of there I feel as if I've just come from standing in line at the In 'N Out Burger on Sunset at midday. I don't know about you but the reason I exercise is to get rid of some of that stress, not to create some more that affects people around me.

Other pros and cons include the locker room.  It's in the process of being updated, which means painted. But it does have good, hot showers, hairdryers, is carpeted, clean and has a bathing suit dryer. You must provide your own towels however.

The parking lot is never full.  Starbucks has a drive through one block away on the corner of Riverside and Tijuana (gotta love it).  7-11 is next door and this YMCA is RIGHT off the freeway.

**MY TIP: The YMCA gives discounted memberships for people in financially challenged situation.  Membership joining fees are 1/2 ($50 as opposed to $100) and monthly fees also run a lot less.
