i don't love this place as much as everyone else does. their yoga classes are inconsistent, depending on the instructor. i can't stand the wed night agro vinyasa instructor. she's very into making people with injuries feel a whole lot worse by the end of the session. people hobble out of that class, clutching various strained limbs. the nautilus room is always packed. i do like some of the trainers an awful lot but the overcrowding and inconsistent class quality is a bummer. Also, not all of the televisions work on the cardio equipment.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I just do. And I hate working out. Maybe it's because growing up I felt like the fat kid, or excuse me, big boned kid. Or because as a teenager I thought I looked really cool smoking and gave myself asthma. I don't know really. All I know is that until I met the Prospect Park Y, I would sooner die than get on a treadmill.
I remember my first visit to the Prospect Park Y was not unlike any first date really. I, in my shy girlie way, looked down and shuffled my feet a little as I checked out the elliptical machines and free weights. I tried not to turn red from my nervousness. As it turns out, I was nervous for nothing. The treadmill was totally fine with walking until I was comfortable enough to get all hot and sweaty (just like at least a couple of dates I've been on). And I even liked getting all into the work out. I even ran with the lights on!
But in all seriousness, I totally had a phobia of gyms before this place. Coming here made me realize that exercise is for everyone - not just the hot jocks. Anyone can work out here and be treated well and have fun. Gyms don't have to be meat markets!
I looove this place!

Be it ever so humble, I love my Y!
And I hope he knows it, despite the fact that I tend to visit him a lot less frequently than I should. But belonging to the Y made it relatively painless for me to join a gym last spring--the fact that my hard earned money is going to a non-profit org that in addition to providing me with top-notch fitness facilities also helps the community in many other ways, rather than some soulless company that preys on people's insecurities helped me take the plunge; not to mention that the cost is among the most reasonable i've ever heard of--if you sign up with someone that you live with (roommate or otherwise) it's only $90 a month for both of you.
The cardio room is pretty big, chock full of all sorts of machines with personal tvs (some even get HBO!) that they frequently rearrange so that they can fit more in. It's clean, brightly and pleasantly painted and full of windows. My fellow Y-goers are courteous and diverse in their fitness levels. There's also a pool and an array of classes that I've yet to take advantage of, but maybe one day I'll get my act together to do so. In short, I'm a fan.
If you're looking for a place to help you keep your new year's resolution in mid-Slope, look no further.

Not bad! I had a gym membership when I lived in the area and I liked it specially for the $44/month student gym membership i was paying. (Some employers offer the same discount, ask them if yours does).
Gym membership includes, assistance with equipment (somewhat personal training), group classes, 6 guest passes and discount to everything else. They have a pool but classes for that are separate.
Most machines have a personal TV (they work most of the time). I hardly made it to the classes but the Yoga was good.
They were expanding bringing in more equipment when I left the gym a few months ago so I assume it's much bigger now.
It's worth it and cheaper than others in the area.

i first joined the ny sports club which is literally ACROSS the street and i was HORRIFIED. i don't know why i did that. some inherent distrust of ... i don't want to analyze my initial decision not to join the Y too carefully. sick. sick.
ANYWAY. moving on. bref.
the prospect park Y is BEAUTIFUL. the instructors are fit - they look and behave as trainers at a gym should. i know that sounds obvious, unless you've been to any NYSC gym and seen the chubby and/or cantankerous and/or sleezy and/or lazy and/or adolescent people who work in them. i am planning to see about a training session.
the same classes are available at the Y as at NYSC.
all the machines are new, FUNCTIONING (again i reference NYSC) and have tvs.
it's never uncomfortably crowded.
it has a pool. the locker is clean and adequate, even nice. i emphasize clean. (again referencing the damn NYSC...)
it's a community thing - which is kind of nice. being part of a community. there are kids around - taking swimming lessons, and old people and all kinds of different people... which is nice...
it's 44 dollars for students. i forget how much for non-students... and i pay i think between 40 and 50 because i belong to the park slope coop. community community.
park slopers - do NOT make my mistake and join nysc!!!!! choose the Y!
manhattanites... don't know about Y's elsewhere but NYSC can't be a better deal... i just don't believe it!
