1 review for Yissel
Two steaming hot burgers off the griddle topped with lightly pickled julienned cabbage and a healthy slathering of house mixed hot sauce and mayonnaise. Simple enough, but a revelation executed this well. The roll housing this goodness is crusty and dense, lending a deceptively modest-sized sandwich some real heft.
I've had my fair share of chimichurris, and the ones served up at Yissel's stand a head above the rest. My first night there I met a guy who moved down the D all the way to Coney Island, but still makes a point of hopping off the 36th St stop on his way home at least twice a week. (Judging by how often I run into him there, twice a week seems a conservative estimate.) Citing his Dominican pedigree, he's always telling me Yissel's the only one doing it right, and I can hardly disagree.
The tacos suaderos are lightly beefy and super tender; at 1.50 apiece you can afford to indulge yourself in as many of these succulent little guys as your heart desires. I've had their tostones with chicharrones, and was pleasantly surprised; their platters are great if you want something with more of a homecooked feel, but time and again I find myself happily ordering a chimichurri and a pair of tacos.
Yissel sets up shop around sunset and usually stays open until dawn. Plenty of parking along 4th Avenue at night, or you could roll down a block to the McDonald's lot in a pinch. If you live around Sunset Park, this is THE SPOT after a long night out. On the best nights, these 'churris evoke fond memories of Fat Cats at my alma mater across the bridge, with less grease and cleaner flavors. That's some seriously high praise coming from a Scarlet Knight.
