6 reviews for Yippie Museum Cafe
Cheapest cup of joe in NY?
The nice (former Yippie?) cashier had to be reminded to charge me, then left the cash register open for about 15 minutes. I noticed when I walked over to look at his iTunes, wondering what version of "When You Awake" by Rick Danko and the Band was playing. A Hell's Angels-looking dude barked at me from a dark corner as I leaned over the corner. I guess he's a mainstay friend of the cafe / security guard. So we had one happy hippie and one angry hippie. Just like an R Crumb comic. This place is a fun respite from the newly gentrified Bowery.
So, I can start off by saying. I love this cafe. Honestly...I grew up in this lovely historian building, from the time I was born until now. as such, my dad is one of the activists who run this eclectic cafe(He is the man in the front).
I had most of my birthdays here and I am even named after one of the founders of what is now the museum, Abbie Hoffman(My middle name IS in fact Abbie, because Abbie was a godfather.)
I love coming here, not only to enjoy the coffee(organic!) and the vegan treats, and to see my dad, but just to encounter the history behind this phenomenal place. Its romantic and quiet, if I want to just go hang out to read a book.
They also have live music that my uncle books and now a comedy show downstairs!
They tour and will answer any question, and if I am there, I usually do a bit of touring myself just for fun.
I say come and hang out! Not only for the prices, but for the politics, the yippee love!
Love always for this place.
Ooh, I love this place. The Yippie Museum Cafe is just that, a museum (small room in the front with various gift shop-like goodies and pamphlets) and a cool, laid-back cafe area with exposed brick and a lofted space. I really liked the lofted space, but never went up there. I don't think anyone does, but it was nice to look at.
There's quite a few tables and chairs and a small area for musicians to perform at. (There was a live band on the Saturday night I was there). And a bar/counter (but don't expect any alcohol, as this is a cafe). Oh, and did I mention that a large coffee is $1? Yes, that is pretty amazing. Besides coffee, there's other beverages and various muffins, cupcakes and scones to pick at. I didn't get a super good look at the menu, but I'm sure I will again soon.
Not to mention there is awesome decor --- big blown-up photos of Yippies and nice, low lighting provides a striking ambiance. Relaxing atmosphere, really nice employees, customers and just a little bit peaceful. But, not boring at all. Subtly relaxing and very, very enjoyable.
This is a pretty amazing place I'm surprised only has one review. I recommend anyone reading this to check it out. I went on a Saturday low-key evening on Bleecker Street.
This place features 50 CENTS for a cup of coffee. You can get that with some soy milk, original or vanilla, and it features a bunch of other things for cheap too such as muffins, etc. There was also live jazz music without a cover charge. It was a pretty amazing find as there doesn't seem to be much on the outside of this place to advertise it.
It is also a museum and according to them charted by the New York State Board of Regents, which is a little weird. There's a small area in the front with pins, bumper stickers, and books by famous Yippies such as Abbie Hoffman.
The walls feature giant blown up photos of Yippie events, funny enough there weren't any photographs of the famous 1968 riot at the National Democratic Convention in Chicago they were involved in. I appreciated the photos in general though, it was interesting and educational as I drank coffee and listened to music.
As stated, they have live music sometimes, and I think several other events time to time. It is a real nice chill place. It made me want to be able to afford to live right above this place. I mean, for the coffee alone, and the music and setting was very nice. Romantic and cheap on the wallet.
Cool in a strange sort of way
The place lacks any real signage--the management claim they were fined for posting a sign which i have a hard time believing. They area aiming for the whole you have to be a certain level of in to know whats here, but haven't really managed it. Booked a few shows here months a go, pretty chill staff, though turnout was rough due to people not being able to find it. Saw a punk show in the basement of the place, with a band with a really dedicated following people came butevnen then it was underwelming. pulling off the underground thing in this neighborhood's pretty rough
This place rules. Some guy came into my work one night and gave me a flier for a show they were having here. He said they were playing blues rock and Grateful Dead songs all night. He also said it was BYOB and there was no cover charge. I immediately thought COUNT ME IN! So after work, some co-workers and I walked over and brought some beers of ours. So we just sat on the couch and drank and listened to some rad music. The only thing that sucked was that this random guy who, I guess, worked there made us pay $1 a beer. I wasn't prepared for that since I was broke and couldn't really afford to give up a dollar. Sad, I know. Wasn't a huge deal though, there WAS no cover. The most hilarious part of the night was that an old hippie dude randomly wandered out of the basement and looked like he had been living down there for years without seeing the light of day. Anyway, this place is rad if you go on the right night and don't feel like going to an overpriced bar. I heard the coffee is cheap too.
