Good food, me likey ! Surprisingly I have to disagree with the reviews of the dessert. I tried the… Read more »
A little pricey, but cozy and tasty.
Yia Yia's (the name is a Greek term of endearment akin to "Nana" or "Grandma,") is neither a locally owned establishment nor a link in a huge chain (I think Yia Yia's qualifies as a "minichain"; you might say it's the "V: The Final Battle" of restaurants, just without the lizard-people from space). We've been there twice in the last couple of months, both times for dinner, neither time during "peak" hours (a Tuesday and a Sunday).
Last night (Sunday night) was surf & turf night, and that's what two of our party had. The "surf" element consisted of two enormous king crab legs, and the "turf" was a small filet. Both surf-&-turfers ate the crab legs ("very tasty!") and saved the filet for another day. I had a baked half chicken, which was extremely tasty...very juicy, not overpowered by sauce or seasonings, and big enough that I'll have a nice dinner tonight from the leftovers (the chicken as accompanied by roasted potatoes). We also tried the hummus and roasted pita (nice touch, the roastedness of the pita) from the "small bites" section of the menu. (The menu contains both "small bites" and "Eurobites" small-plate sections, with the "small" bites being a little smaller and less expensive than the "Euro" bites).
Service was friendly...though I think I've been watching too much TV: our server struck me as a cross between the likeable Will from Alias and the somewhat less likeable Marcel from Top Chef...fortunately, the Marcel overtones were slight. (I definitely should watch less TV.) Again, I felt that the food was a little pricey, but the portions were ample, and all items were flavorful. I think my Yia Yia would've liked it, too.
I'm revising my review.... the food here is so blah and the rice is too high for such tasteless food. We went here for valentines day. We had requested a certain section (which they asked us where we wanted to sit when we reserved a place 2 weeks in advance) they tried to seat us in the very front of the door , which the host was so nice to relocate us. The they ran out of the Vday special that we had specifically gone there for at 8 O CLOCK... how do u run out of ur special at 8 p.m. on vday?!?! my food was not that great very tasteless.. I could have made it amazing in my kitchen, they didnt bring out bread, which im not sure if we r suppose to ask for but las time we did not have to. they didnt bring us silverware for our dessert, so i had to eat it with my hands, which freaks me out. over all i was reminded why i only go to this place for dessert and appetizers...
the dessert is the best part... the chocolate brownie is the best!!!!
it's almost $10, but sooooooooooo worth it... the food is very blah! although the calamari is good very small but good. i took a point away for the food but all the other stars are for the dessert!
Expensive food that was sub-par. I did love my waiter, who talked with myself and a friend about the Civil War.
I'm basing my star rating completely on their desserts! I've never had actual food (dinner) at Yia Yia's but the dessert is delectable. I'd been to Yia Yia's a couple of times with my lovely cousin from Memphis, and she knows all the best places to eat and go out in Tennessee. Every time I've visited, we've made a trip to Yia Yia's and only for their drinks and dessert. I don't know what it's called, but there's a delicious dessert with lots of gooey chocolate in the center so order that! Watch out, though, it's kind of pricey.
I like Yia Yia's. I don't know if it's because of the food or the location.
They serve pretty simple food. Nothing that will WOW you out of yours seats but they're usually tasty enough. This is where we go if we don't want any Asian food; no Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Thai... yes I know you get the idea... but not everyone - TRUST ME - knows what some of the countries that make up the continent lol!
The restaurant is pleasant enough... tho' some of the ladies I often go with complain how cold it is there. Blah - skinny bitches need a bloody cashmere sweater in Memphis summer, what do you expect?! Service is always friendly and prompt though I did have a weird one-time experiance when I ordered the trout and waited for a long long time (more than 30 mins) before the manager came up and apologized to say they had ran out of it and that if I wanted they could run to the store to get me one. No, really, I'm not making this up! But it didn't turn out to be a bad experiance after all. Quite funny on the contrary lol. There was no need to throw a fuss (it's Yia Yia's not L'Ateliar de Joel Robuchon lol) plus the manager was very apologetic and clever. He took care of my dinner that evening and gave us a voucher to make up for our next meal there. That's what good restaurant managers are for!
Some of their desserts are good. Not great since I've had much better and far more unique. But for people who don't usually stuffed their faces crazy like me with all types of desserts - I can imagine that the desserts here can be seen as REALLY good :) Nothing wrong with that. We all have different priorities :D
an imposter to upscale food, this is a small chain out of Kansas City and this crap is not cheap either,,,,great location
UPDATE, two years almost to the day...March 2008
they still suck.....badly....service is even worse...PASS
