Yelp Elite Event @ Open City
13 reviews for Yelp Elite Event @ Open City
Sorry it took so long to get back in here and review this but it was such an awesome fete that I couldn't ignore it any longer... thanks for the +1 invite and I look forward to joining the Elite ranks in the future. You guys are all too awesome and I met some awesome Yelpers and made new friends. Oh, and now I'm craving pop-rocks on all my cocktails!
Thanks again to Fayza for hosting this and to Open City. I look forward to bringing my husband back for dinner soon.
The bash at OC was first-rate
And all of the snacks on my plate
Were savory treats.
Yelp's Houston Elites
Are better than good...they are GREAT!
Fun gals - Sarah, Liz and Janelle -
Were there, Sam and Adam as well.
Both Connie and Trevor
Where witty and clever.
Cute Christa and Cindy were swell.
Josh, Hank, Eric, Kevin and May
Each had really cool things to say.
My favorite Yelpers
(Two marvelous helpers)
Named Cory and Lisa held sway.
My eyes leapt right out of their sockets
When Erin's and Kymberlie's pockets
Of chest flesh bounced by
While useful Shao-Tai
Kept Yelpers *abreast* of the Rockets.
But Fayza was queen of the night.
Her work made the eve a delight.
We really are lucky
That, perky and plucky,
She made this event go so right.
Apologies to those of you whose names I couldn't work into these five verses. You're all U, F and C!
As a representative of Chicago Yelp I don't know if I agree with Fayza's claim that "Houston has the best yelpers around". We all know that award goes to Chicago yelpers, but I'm happy to give you guys the 2nd place prize. What a cool group of people!!!
If last night's bash at Open City was just the beginning of Yelp Elite parties for Houston we've got some fun times ahead. And yes, I said we...I'm happy to leave behind the Chicago cold at any time to come party with you! And y'all are all invited to escape those humid summers and visit me!
Open City is a wonderful venue and the top level is just perfect for any party. I wasn't in the best spirits when I arrived after getting lost trying to find it for 1 1/2 hours (from now on I'm traveling with my gps), but one of their Yelp Rock Martinis (I forgot how much I love pop rocks!!) turned my frown upside down. And the food was delish- smoked salmon, mini burgers, artichoke dip, and corn risotto thingees....can't go wrong with any of that comfort food!! Nadine and her staff were on the ball as well...I didn't go a second without a drink in my hand or something to munch on.
I learned a valuable lesson that when you already have a bad stomach ache it's probably not a good idea to drink pop rock martinis, but the pain was worth it for this 5 star event! Thanks for the fun Houston Yelp!!!
"Hear no evil, speak no evil - and you'll never be invited to a party" Oscar Wilde was never wrong.
Despite being far from elite I was able to crash this thing because Connie is uber cool and I could be her "plus one". She actually had committed me before I even signed up with Yelp.
Events such as this (meet & greets with online "friends") can be disappointing for any number of reasons and my one previous foray into such a thing with a community (Eric S. knows the one I am talking about) led me to say I would not do that again. But Yelp felt a little different and I had Connie as my backup in case anyone wanted to fight.
I am glad i went. I definitely added much needed class and style to the event. Beyond that, everyone I met did not give me the creeps or tell me that I gave them the creeps. To me that smells like success. I even got a nice compliment from Cory regarding my cleavage (I have a pair of eyes, you know, Cory, look up!).
I also enjoyed that the majority had no idea who I was. That allowed Connie to be the new cool person and she needs that. Her life with me gives her so little hope and happiness. You should send her some donations to help her buy a better husband.
I further enjoyed hearing about Dolph's Yelp stalkers. He is tall.
Fayza is doing that for which she was born and her goofy ebullience is infectious, inviting, and mesmerizing in a cult leader kind of way.
Any other newbies should have no fear going to the next event. Whether I go to another will be fully dependent upon what Connie tells me I want to do.
Am I surprised that I had such a good time at our first ever Elite event? Not a bit. 1) I knew Fayza was planning it, so it was bound to be a fabulous time 2) It was at Open City where the food is fabulous, the drinks are strong, and Nadine is queen of hospitality 3) It was the end of a long work week and I knew I'd have a great time unwinding
So, here are some other fabulous things that went on that are worth mentioning in order to entice more people to come for our next one (and if you're not Elite yet, get going on those UFC reviews--remember that quantity isn't quality).
*Getting a tub of Nadine's AMAZING honey butter and having people ask me about it for the rest of the night. Seriously, if you haven't tried it yet, get your butt back to Open City and try it. That and the mac'n'cheese should be meal by itself!
*Meeting all the new Yelpers! I knew there'd be a bunch of new faces and it was great to meet so many new people. If I didn't meet you, next time!
*Seeing more cleavage than I knew was possible without busting out the $1 bills
*Free food and drinks!
*Yelp shot glasses
*Seeing Kevin again and finally meeting Andrea (both CMs in their own right)
*Beautiful skyline view
There are more things, but I'm starving and distracted by the meowing kitties but I think you get the idea. It was a blast, If you didn't get to come, you can lust after the pictures (they're on Flickr under Houston Yelp) and plan to come next time!
Thanks for the bash, Fayza (and Nadine!!)! I don't know if pop rocks and artichoke dip are really my scene these days, but the hospitality couldn't have been warmer! I'll have to check out Open City on a ...tamer... night for the great view (who knew all it took was one flight of stairs to see the skyline from midtown??) and to sample their famed mac and cheese.
And thanks, fellow yelpers, for being so yelptacular. I never thought I'd see so many people with nametags eating off of one plate of bread pudding. I am honored to be one of the few, the proud, the 1337.
I had a blast! It was a lot of fun meeting the people I so often interact with (or piss off) on a Talk Thread in person. It made me feel less like Second Life and more like Real Person(TM). The venue was really cool - I will definitely be back to try it out later. Great view of downtown for a 2nd level patio! I didn't get my hands on much of the food, but what I did have was excellent. I didn't do any of the Yelp Pop Rock Martini's, because I am too much of a manly man to do fru fru drinks like that. The "after party" at Downing Street was also excellent - great company and discussion with fantastic cigars (thanks Cory and Kyle!). What a great group of people to have interesting discussions with! No, seriously! I mean it!
Beside the unflattering photo of myself, Fayza did a most excellent job!
Oh, and I don't think I've ever seen so much cleavage in one place. I think I need to go to church on Sunday. Perhaps a confessional or two?
Open City is
really on Bagby with view
of downtown skyline
Free food free cocktails
I like the Houston Yelpers
They make me smile wide
Dolph is really tall
Christa and I went to high
school Shao and friend neat
Met some nice people
Enjoyed the mini burgers
Next time will meet more
I'm so glad I was a part of the Houston' first Yelp Elite Event. The venue was perfect, the Yelp Rocks martinis were flowing, the food was very good, and of course... The Elite Squad is all kinds of crazy fun.
I'm looking forward to the next one and many more. Great job Fayza!
P.S. It was really cool to see Kevin N. (again) from Austin and also meeting Andrea W. from Chicago.
There is not enough ways for me to say how awesome this, my first Yelp event, was. I was even more excited that it was on a day that I got my first ROTD for Sambuca! So exciting in a totally dorky Yelp way.
First of all, the delicious Yelp Rocks martinis (with Pop Rocks!) did indeed rock. And then they were free, making them rock even harder. Yummy yummy yummy. I did probably drink a few too many of them and it probably helped contribute to all the kissing I did.
Secondly, all the people I met were incredible! Lots of interesting conversation (I remember talking to Dolph W. about Neal Stephenson; hopefully I wasn't too drunk to make any sense), lots of funny stories, and fun people. I hope to do more mingling, especially before I drink my body weight in booze.
Open City was very awesome and I loved the view of partial obscured downtown (the weather was really foggy) from the covered patio, though it was a little muggy.
I also loved all the cool Yelp schwag that I scored - a tote, a Yelp Elite Squad hat which I just love, shot glasses, pins, stickers, and a pen (though I probably should have grabbed at least one more of those!).
Much love and thanks go to Fayza, Andrea W., Kevin N., Nadine, and the rest of the people that put everything together. It was an exceptional party and I cannot wait for the next one. It'll be soon, right?
Much love also goes out to all my fellow Yelpers! I had a great time meeting you and I hope that you forgive any drunken hitting on that I may have done or other inappropriateness. I completely blame the Yelp Rock martinis.
You'll forgive the corny coincidence if I mention that my first Space City Yelp Elite Event was a total blast, 'cause it was! I had such a great time meeting H-town yelpers in the flesh, and Fayza and Open City did a terrific job of creating an atmosphere that was all about the fun of getting together.
Kudos to the restaurant staff for being super cool and helpful all night long, and bully for the awesome yelpers who braved the threat of inclement weather (and some killer pop rocks martinis and tasty appetizers) to spend time with one another set against the backdrop of one of the coolest spots in midtown. I'm a fan now, and can't wait to bump into you guys again. Huzzah!
A big THANK YOU to Fayza for letting this new yelper be her +1 last night. It was an honor to be part of her first Houston Yelp Elite event & I had a wonderful time! The Yelp Rocks martini's were great, the food was delicious, the view was spectacular & the company couldn't have been better. Yelp sure knows how to throw a party. If this is any indication as to what I can expect at future Elite events, you can bet your bootie that I'll be working my way up to Elite status ASAP.
Thanks again Fayza & all the wonderful staff at Open City!
That was an awesome party! And I look pale in those pictures so I'm totally going tanning today! Thank you for a great time all the Yelpers, Fayza and the OC. I don't get out much but when I do, I wish every time was like last night!
