Andy Yeh, you and your family are still holding it down. Legal monopoly?
Green tea, strawberry, Chinese water chestnut or whatever (li zi), all light and fluffy.... whipped cream sweet enough to savor and not too much to send me down the street to my dentist.
One caveat: the cake decorations, are, well, typical Chinese cake decorations. However, the Chinese is prettier than Fay Da or Tai Pan.
2 girls and a guy walks into a bakery after a huge meal in Flushing.
2 girls and a guy are all from Taiwan.
Girl A: I remember having their cakes every year for my birthday. The chocolate and strawberry mixed is the best..
Girl B: Their whipped cream is fantastic, its not too sweet or heavy, its the perfect texture and it melts right in your mouth..
Guy: I don't think I've ever had their cakes...
10 minutes later
2 girls, a guy, plus a whole cake leave Yehs (and an assortment of other goodies)
My BF got my Bday cake here. And here I thought, eh typical Chinese sponge cake. Dry and bland on the inside with a layer of canned fruit, and overly sweet frosting on the outside.
Nope! Completely wrong. We got Strawberry flavored cake and it wasn't just flavored with food coloring, it actually tasted of Strawberry. No fruit filling, I'm all about fresh fruit. The cake top had some canned cherries a few fresh strawberries. The cream was whipped cream, light and refreshing. Layered on lightly and fluffy. This is how I'd make my cake if I were to make it myself, but seeing as to it was my Birthday I don't have to.
Where I get my mooncakes, with green bean filling both sweet and savory and a white flaky crust.
Ahhh, I love this bakery, it's easily recognized by its Canada Maple Leaf in the front of the store. I've been a customer here since it opened and I just love it. They are famous for their cakes; but especially, for their boston Creme Pies. Creamy, moist and just fluffy; however, it is very high in calories since you're eating cool whip.
The best part about this bakery is the Curry Beef puff; they are the best curry puffs I've ever eaten in my life, everything is the perfect touch. The pricing is pretty decent too!
Great bakery, Great food, near Flushing. recommend!
I've gone to this bakery for their strawberry & green tea flavored cakes. Their cakes are light and airy which just makes you want to eat more of it. I have no qualms about their products (pastries & cakes). They have their secret recipe down pat. It's a local favorite, but I grew tired of it over the years.
My concern is their customer service attitude over the years. There is no customer service. I always cringe every time I step foot in this place. The staff never smiles or greet customers... in a cold tone, "What do you want." They won't provide candles, napkins, forks, or a disposable plastic cake cutter unless you ask. Even so, they'll give you a sigh of discontentment.
Yeh's is nay!
The Chinese are terrible at desserts. I'm Chinese so I should know. Well..actually, I'm Taiwanese, but this is yelp not youtube.
However, Yeh does a very good job. I just had their cake for my mother's birthday and it was delicious. I usually don't like regular bday cakes, but theirs are very tasty, light, and all the condiments (cream, fruit) seem to meld together in harmony.
I like getting a dozen of their pineapple cakes too when traveling abroad and give them to people I befriend along the way. It's a specialty of Taiwan and yeh's makes a very decent version.
My beef with this place is that they are like the soup nazi's version of a chinese bakery. A previous poster mentioned how customer service is lacking and that has been the case with me as well. My uncle vouched for me today, he had ordered the cake from them earlier. I understand it's ny and alot of people here suck, but i'm always nice when entering your establishment. Don't stare at me impatiently and make me nervous when i'm ordering an effing cake.
omg best green tea birthday cafe i've ever had... i have no idea how they made this cake so light and fluffy... the fruits were a lil on the hard side but the cake totally made up for it... devoured!
haven't been to the actual bakery but will keep in mind for next time!
I am in love with their layered green tea with chocolate cake! The whip cream is just right and the cake is not overly sweet. The cake itself is light and fluffy. MmM talking about it now makes me crave for some right now. I haven't tried their other cakes, but I will since I really really like their green tea with chocolate cake.
This is the only chinese bakery that I can say I actually love the cakes from. Their strawberry cakes are what I ask for everytime my birthday comes around. And when I get married, this is the place I'll be coming to for my sheet cakes too!
The frosting is a very light whip cream that isn't heavy like the other bakeries. The light, fluffy strawberry cake will have you coming back for more. If you like cream puff filling type frosting, go to Yeh's! You won't regret it.
They also sell cake pies for $11 each. There's a little too much frosting in those for me, but for $11 of heavenly strawberry goodness, I can't complain too much. It's unfortunate their location sucks, and parking is a nightmare to find tho. :(
I haven't tried anything else in their bakery so I can't really comment on that, but make a trip out to taste the cake!
Hands down, the best bakery for cakes in flushing. The strawberry, green tea and taro cakes are delicious. I crave for their cakes every birthday.
I can eat an entire Boston creme pie from Yeh's (aka "Hong Yip" / Red Leaf bakery) all by myself. Unlike overly sweet Western desserts, I love Yeh's BCP's w/ a very light whip cream sandwiched by sheets of soft fluffy vanilla cake (sorry folks, no chocolate involved). These airily simple desserts run about $10 each and come in a variety of flavors. I can also vouch for their Japanese cheesecake (light, fluffy) and their black forest (moist, chocolatey, sweeter than their other cakes but not overly sugary). Mmmm.... I like Yeh's cakes better than those from the big Chinese bakery chains and wish they were located closer to downtown Flushing (although it's still w/in walking distance), but then again, maybe that's what keeps all the riffraff away!
I absolutely love their curry chicken pies.
Theyre full of flavor but not that its overpowering.
They also make an amazing taro cake thats filled with taro on the inside, I like putting it in the freezer, when you take it out a few hours later its like eating ice cream. yum
Im not a big fan of their strawberry cake, it tastes like cake with strawberry jam but its okay.
Their green tea cakes are really light but still a touch of that green tea flavor, its a dark green with cream around it.
Tasty place!
They're really great for extra light cakes. It's always fresh, and they come in all the standard Chinese flavors: taro, chesnut, strawberry and green tea, iced with whipped cream.
I try to stay away from Chinese bakeries nowadays (I pretty much went through every birthday and holiday celebration for the first 15 years of my life on cakes like these), but when I do get a craving, Yeh's is a safe bet--and conveniently located AWAY from downtown. And with the bigger chains (Fay Da, Taipan, etc.) coming out with fancier and pricier cakes, I'd say Yeh's ranks pretty high in quality and bargain because they stick closely to what they've always done best.
cute little hole in the wall bakery. They make good cakes and pastries. Its in a strange location, near the hospital and a residential area, which can explain why its still in business. Their stuff is good but not exceptional.
The best moon cakes and white, flaky, meaty, moon bean cakes in NY! People drive 3 hours from Taipei to a place that is famous for making these moon bean cakes for over a century. Their strawberry cakes will melt in your mouth too!
i love this bakery. most of the time when my family drives to flushing, we get curry puffs, green tea cake [roll], taro ice cream cake [maybe its not ice cream but its meant to be cold, basically taro filling inside a roll of cake] and we also get their specialties around moon cake day. ive heard their boston creme pies are great too but have yet to try. seems it would be too sweet.
