For as long as I've been coming to the taproom, I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. Let's change that right now...
Yazoo is not so secret anymore, the place gets crowded as shit. Great atmosphere, great employees (Brandy you rock), and the best beer in the region.
My only tip is to get there early around 2 or later around 5 (Saturdays)... if you don't want to wait in line.
The ESB is my favorite; it has a nice red-brown color with a nice touch of hops. Another favorite is the Summer Ale, its light and crisp with a sweet finish.
So yeah, do yourself a favor....go have a few pints with a cheese plate.
I love love love this tap room! It has been my Thursday night spot for five years now. Along the way I have drank many a fine beer and met some really cool people. My favorite beers include the Pale Ale and the Hop Project series of IPA. The Belgian Brown that was brewed a few years back provided for some epic nights of drunkenness. I adore the staff; they are so friendly and knowledgeable about the beer.
While I'm happy for the owners and staff that business has grown over the years, I'm saddened to learn that the place will be moving to the Gulch. Soon, I imagine that I will have to share space with the very people that make Yazoo a place to be avoided on Fridays and Saturdays. You know who I'm talking about. They are the trendy, *cool* people who lack the basic skills of social interaction. They don't come for the beer or the good company. They're only there because they think it's the cool place to be seen. It's unfortunate on many different levels but I'll end my rant here and leave on a positive note. Congrats to Linus and crew for making truly amazing beer and for the resulting success. I will always have my memories of the little taproom inside of the Marathon motor works building.
If you haven't checked this place out yet, you are truly missing out!
Yazoo makes some great beers and always has some unique ales. They have many staples like their Pale Ale, which is amazing, and Dos Perros, a Mexican amber beer, and their Hef.
The tap room has a charm and is always full of beer lovers. The Marathon motor works building has a ton of character. Yazoo is moving their operations within the year so hurry up and try this place!
I recommend the Hop Project series of IPA style beers. Every batch is a little different but all are hoppy and yummy. Their Porter is another favorite of mine.
This is hands down my favorite spot to have beers in Nashville. Their gravel courtyard is the closest I've found to a proper beer garden in town and there's usually a dog wandering around for me to pet. The owners and employees are great and the crowd really does seem refreshingly free of the phonies that Kristie P. predicts will plague the new location.
Can hardly bear to think of them moving... but I'm keeping an open mind....
This is the best place to grab a beer in Nashville. Rich flavors and a great vibe. When the weather's great you can sit outside. Females beware: guys outnumber girls 5:1 any given night.
Nashville truly is lucky that Linus and company set up shop with Yazoo. The beer is very good and they have managed to keep it casual even with a great deal of success.
The only critique that I have is that the secret is out and it is constantly packed on the weekends. Part of me wants to change the review to one star and bash it just to get some elbow room. I can't bring myself to deny others the joy of a great local beer.
Long Live YAZOO!
I have to be honest that I have never been to the brewery. Pity really, it's on my to do list and it's certainly not an activity that I normally feel merits procrastination. However, for my review, I am merely discussing the beer which I have had PLENTY of experience with.
For one thing, why go buy some boring keg of bud when you can buy a much tastier keg from a local brewer? Secondly, I like them all however, my beer palate tends to lean on the sweeter less hoppy side so I am very much a fan of the dos perros and sly rye porter. The growlers are the best if you want some fresh brew for a party without needing a keg and it's an excuse to visit Yazoo which somehow becomes an errand my husband is very willing to run.
Enough said, there are a few brewers in town, I like all of them but Yazoo is my favorite and very worthy of our patronage.
I wish I could say I've taken the tour, but I haven't.
What I can say is Dos Perros is for those that love a kick to their booze. Being a panzy, the malts of this brew are just too much for someone that just wants a smooth easy to drink beer while watching The Office.
I haven't had enough experience with the other brews, but I'm glad Nashville has a local brewery. I'll definetly be trying some of the others in the near future and more than likely update from there.
I love that we have a local brewery here in Nashville... and not to mention the beer is actually really good! So much so that I even buy it in stores over other imports.
It is important that you visit this place someday - if only to drink a few of their beers they have available only on tap. Their porters and stouts are my personal favorite.. They also have special brews that are offered in limited quantities. Typically they're full of hops, so I'm not as big a fan of these as others might be.
The tour is also worth going on - its only $6 (last i checked) and you get to sample 4 different beers throughout the tour (and they are hefty samples!) Plus you get to keep your pint glass at the end.
A few things to know before you go - On saturdays they get SLAMMED. The place is really small, you have to order at the bar... and usually quite a line forms. So I'd suggest going on a different day if possible (although their hours are quite limited). Their beers are something like $4/pint and they're REAL pints. They also serve a little bit of food - a nice cheese plate with spiced nuts and bread... or some local bread pudding from sweet 16th bakery.
This place is truly a gem and I hope it remains that way - also crossing my fingers they continue to extend their hours! As much as I would like to see their tap room a little larger, or a new method of taking orders (so the line doesn't get 20 people deep), I kinda like the place just as it is. But I can see how a lot of people would be frustrated and walk out empty handed.
Because they are open so few hours, there's no such thing as off hours at the Yazoo Brewery. That means the place can get really crowded, but we've been lucky enough most times to beat the crowd. It's best to go directly to the brewery for a growler refill because while other places in town may be more convenient, at the brewery for like $1 more you also get a sampler tray of all their brews. I like to take a friend, get two sampler trays and a cheese plate, and sit in the enclosed patio.
It's right in the middle of an industrial district so it has that rough-edged charm. The patio has more broken bricks than flowers, but fills with sunshine in the afternoons. It's got a lot of character, and it's a lovely place to have a beer (when everyone else has decided the same thing that day).
I stumbled upon Yazoo's Hop Project #11 IPA at the 12South Taproom, and it is Yazoo's first attempt at making a beer that has any resemblance to bold flavor.
One drink of the hugely aromatic and mega-hopped IPA was all it took... it really is a winner. But after repeat visits drinking the hop project, i get kind of bored and there is no other beer in the yazoo lineup that I think holds any water. Sorry, you've reached the first critical review of Yazoo Brewing... now you're coming along for the ride... here we go.
So, I really think they need to up the ante and stop catering to the budweiser crowd, and instead make something with some balls behind it. Sweetwater and Terrapin (out of Georgia) are both doing this to great award-winning success, and people are following them into their delicious beer explorations.
Bottom Line: Yazoo needs to be more adventurous and bulk up the flavor of their current lineup and add some better seasonals. Hop project is a good start, but they need to push it way harder.
The proof is in the pudding (or the barley?), and Yazoo hasn't won any medals at the Great American Beer Festival. So, they have their work cut out for them and let's hope they really score with some wonderful new brews.... I really hope they succeed and I will support them when I can.
So, Yazoo is a decent local brewery, and if they inject a little more umphh (ok, a lot) into their current lineup... it really could be a landmark brewery in Nashville.
2 stars: 1 star for the Hop Project. 1 star for being local.
Wow just when you think you are lost, there it is... you know the old brick building that looks condemned but apparently serves home brew.
The building is impressive, the beer is decent enough.. the prices are great... The space seems to small for what the have to work with. Two small sections are packed if anything more than ten people show up together. The outdoor patio left us wet from water dripping from the cracked roof drainage, the sun barely could peak past the old water tin.....
But i found this place awesome... yeah I am not usually a big fan of brewery beer either... the pallet craves Pabst and that's what i feed it... but i was really impressed with Dos Perros.
Can't Wait for summer to roll through and spend some quality happy hours out that way of the Yazoo......
Get a growler!!!
The bf & I went on the tour on a Saturday. It was only $6, you got a free glass, and enough samples to equal a beer. It was very informative and fun.
The best part though, was the growler! For $11 you buy the 1/2 gallon glass jug and it gets filled with your Yazoo beer of choice. And for $8 you can get it refilled. We now own TWO growlers! I love it because it's better for the environment, we're reusing the glass, & it's super easy to get refilled because it's only slightly off the path from my bf's route to work. He likes it because he prefers the fresh draft taste better than from bottles.
We took the tour and a drink at the Yazoo Brewery Taproom this weekend. This place is a hidden gem filled with a flurry of unusual people. The prices are beyond reasonable and the staff friendly. It appears that they are open very short hours? Something like 4-8 p.m. Friday and 2-8 p.m. Saturday, with regular brewery tours at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. The tour was very short, basically one small room. However, it's only $6 and your souvenir cup stays full throughout the entire tour. Even though they close early, you can basically take the party with you by purchasing an $11 growler of the brewery's beer. Or...bring your growler back with you for an el cheapo $8 refill--how sweet is that? *** Don't forget *** The Yazoo Brew was voted one of the best spots in town to purchase a keg. A small keg goes for $55, I will definitely be bring one back for my neighborhood block party.
Once you get past the obstacle course that is finding this place, you'll really enjoy time spent at Yazoo's tap room. The building used to be an old car manufacturing plant, and was subsequently abandoned before coming to house Yazoo. So, there's lots of ambience to be found in the old brick walls (there's just not lots of air conditioning for those hot summer days). While it gets crowded, you can usually find a seat in the room adjacent to the tap room, or out in the courtyard.
As for ordering, get the sampler ($6 for 5 tastings) and pair it with the cheese platter. Yum. While, I'm not a big fan of all their beers, I do love trying them in rapid succession. The only problem is that they don't have any means of identifying which beers are which once they've poured them (most places use a place mat with writing on it). So, it can be hard to remember what's what.
Also, be sure to get a growler - it's a relatively cheap way to enjoy a good amount of beer...I would suggest their hefeweizen or the dos perros.
Oh Yazoo, I love everything about you. From your delightful name to your cold, delicious and amazing beer to your awesome brewery located in the old Marathon Motor Works building in an industrial section of town. I remember the first time I tried Yazoo's beer, it was years ago when I was still in college at Mafioza's on their two for one Tuesday nights (back when Mafioza's couldn't be beat, before it turned into what it is today, but that is for a different review). It was their Hefeweizen, I loved it instantly and I've never looked back. It quickly became the only beer I ordered around town, and I couldn't wait to try them all.
Their beer is not only some of the best in Nashville, it's some of the best in the region. When I moved away to Atlanta a few years ago Yazoo was at the top of a long list of things I missed about Nashville. Sure Atlanta has breweries like Sweetwater (don't get me started on their overly hyped beer) and Atlanta Brewing Company (home to Red Brick Ale, if you ever take a brewery trip to Atlanta I suggest you stop here over Sweetwater, you will not be disappointed) but they are nothing compared to Yazoo. And it's no wonder when their brewmaster interned with the wonderful Brooklyn Brewery in New York. I was delighted when they started bottling their beverages because it meant when I visited Nashville I could take some home with me. When I moved back here a few months ago, the first beer on draft I ordered was Yazoo's Dos Perros (their Mexican style beer which is delicious and one of their higher alcohol brews), and it was like coming home again.
There is a reason that their tap room is ALWAYS packed. If you ever get a chance to go, please do, but only bring one of your friends with you, leave space for me when I go! First timers should get the sampler, which is like it sounds a sample of each of their brews. The cheese plate is a perfect pairing I suggest ordering one of those and making an afternoon of it. I've tried all their flavors and even love their Onward Stout which is amazing because I typically don't like Stout beers. They have a seasonal out right now that I believe is a triple hopped IPA and it is AMAZING but not for the faint of heart or mind. Try to go on one of their tours if you can, it's really fun and you get a free glass with a bunch of samples. One thing to remember is that the brewery is open sometimes even when the Tap Room is not, so you can still go pick up a growler to take home, which I highly suggest doing. Just make sure to stop by their website to double check on their hours, and hop over to google maps to get those directions, it can be very tricky to find your way there but well worth the trip.
Back in the day (okay, precious few years ago), it seemed like the Yazoo brewery was so hard to remember how to get to, it never got too crowded. But before too long, tales of the great beer and the gnarly brick abandoned warehouse lounging area in which to drink it spread quickly, and now the place is PACKED at all hours they're open (which is not many). I enjoyed several lovely summer afternoons there, munching on the cheese plate and sipping beers. The enclosed courtyard with plants sprouting out of the crumbling bricks made a great photo op as well. The last times I've visited, however, it was shoulder to shoulder in the tap room, and getting anything involved at least a half hour wait each trip to the bar. Five stars to this local business and their great product, but I'll pass on the tap room as a place to hang out. Go fill up your growlers, but you'll probably enjoy drinking on your own porch more than being squeezed in here.
DId not take the tour, but spent some time in the tasting room on a crowded, rainy Saturday. The open-air all brick room next to the tasting room was less crowded and moe condusive to conversation and taking our time. The sampler was a great deal... for $6 you get 5 5oz tasting flights, and then the opportunity to buy a 5 dollar jug of your favorite (the jug, or "growler" is glass and will be a very sharp looking souvenier). Also, beers were flavorful and delicious, although the ESB had an over-powering pine taste.
