Glendale, CA
I wasn't sure about stopping by at this place but decided to go ahead and give it a chance.... WOW!!! One of the greatest decisions of my food-critiquing life. Looks like a random whole-in-a-wall type of place so I was expecting dirty chairs and tables, careless service and overly-greasy food.
I walked into and was immediately greeted by a really nice Hispanic gentleman. He asked what I was in the mood for and I told him I heard about their Tortas. He made a few suggestions based on what I said and I ended up ordering the "No. 56 MACHO." It was a stake torta with bell pepper stuffed with cheese. I'm not latin but I LOVE tortas and have tried a million different tortas and NOTHING has come close to the MACHO... WOW!!!
The fries I ordered were also really good and not greasy. I definitely recommend this place, too bad I'm all the way in Glendale or else I'd be there at least 3 times a week.
Only problem I had is that I wish the menu was also in English and they had ESPN on the TV. -

OMG WTF. Talk about your hole in the wall surprise. I think they have over 70 tortas to choose from so make sure you get a torta when you go.
I had one with Pierna and Chorizo. Delicious. I want to go again next time I'm in the neighborhood.
Plenty of inside seating and it doesn't feel ghetto even though you're in HP. Tables were clean and the person taking orders was nice. -

The first few times I went to Yaya's it was for the tortas... They're good, done.
I think it's important to highlight their other awesome dishes...
They have awesome tacos dorados de papa. I'll translate for the bilingually impaired... fried potato tacos... lol
Another awesome dish is their tacos de tinga... not sure how to translate tinga... in essence it's shredded chicken cooked in a mildly spicy tomato/onion sauce and served in taco form...
If you like a nice salsa with your dish, ask the person at the counter for "salsa casera".... apparently it's a family recipe... Salsa casera translates to house sauce... it's mildly spicy and a bit smoky... -

I love this place! I love to get their tortas & chilaquiles above all (the rest of the food is good too but can't mention them to have my faves not noticed) as well as their fries but I try not to get them so I don't fill up on them. I haven't tried ALL their tortas in all the decades living so close to here but my all time favorite is Torta Hawaiana.
This place is family run, very friendly & quite easy to find -visible on the road with nothing in front of it or too close around it.
The reason(s) why I took off 1 star is because of 2 things 1) Their seating area is quite small for when you wanna take a big group & you're tired of taking them to your place (the outside is not always the best or safe for the hoodlums that pass by) 2) their chefs don't always get the order right and forget to leave out what you asked not to be in your torta. -

I've passed by this place at least 100 times and I always said I have to try it. I spent at least 5 minutes reading the torta menu since they have a lot to choose from! I decided on a simple chicken torta that came with chicken, avocado, cream cheese, onion, tomato & jalapeno. I ordered one minus the onions and I have to say I've had better. The chicken breast could have used some seasoning. It needed some flavor, which is basically all that it lacked. I'm not giving up on the place. I took a menu to go to study their other tortas and I have to say their burgers and other items are priced very well. But for $5 plus, the chicken torta is a no go.

Alhambra, CA
I came here with high expectations. The person who recomended this resteraunt to me was practically preaching that the tortas there were the best thing on earth. I ordered a #17, the Special, because that's what my friend told me to get. It wasn't amazing. It was mediocre. I was extremely disappointed. It wasn't a bad torta, it was just okay. The milanesa tasted like regular milanesa. No spices, not much flavor in the breading. I tasted the chili-cheese fries that my friend ordered, and they were alright. There was no wow factor in anything that I tasted in that resteraunt, and I was disappointed. When I take a bite, I do my best to enjoy my food to it's fullest potential. I did with Yaya's, and I was disappointed. The best tasting food there was the Coca-Cola. I won't be going there again any time soon.

They serve:
Tortas (of course)
Burgers
Burritos
Sandwiches
Sides ( such as mozzarella sticks, buffalo wings, chili fries, etc.)
Glass bottled soft drinks
Shakes & cheese cake
They have the best torta "de el chavo" for those That are overwhelmed with the torta menu and like ham. I strongly suggest you get a side of fries. The owner and staff and really friendly.
Downfall:
-They have a B rating.
-CASH ONLY
- small TV that is always on CH. 34 but sometimes thankful for ( : -

Huntington Park, CA
Tortas! Tortas! Tortas! That's what the sign says, and although it has burgers, tacos, burritos and pastrami--you know, the usual Burger/Mexican Food joint menu--the REAL reason to go here is for the now SEVENTY different tortas.
The tortas are, as is to be expected, varied in their ingredients as in their prices (which start at 4.99). I recommend the Gringa: Tinga, all the usual fixings and melted cheese.
The new posted menu has addressed a long-time customer request and now features the ingredients of each torta, saving you the trouble of asking.
This is a very casual place. You walk to the counter, order your food, get a table (inside or outside) then wait for your order to be called. You pick it up yourself and chow! If there is any drawback to this place, it is the limited seating. There are a number of four person booths and two person booths only (although high chairs are available for the little ones).
One unexpected note: this place has some of the best PANCAKES anywhere. Granted, there are no blueberry pancakes, etc. But the pancakes are really wonderful--better than restaurants that specialize in them. The coffee, bacon, french toast, all excellent. There is also a selection of traditional Mexican breakfasts. Breakfast is now served until noon-- this in direct responsive to its popularity.
Family run, the owner or one of his daughters will be taking your order--always very friendly. They also try to get to know their repeat customers and will often greet you by name as you come in. NIce touch.
Ample parking on its private lot is available. And if you want to top things off, there is a full-service Mexican panaderia (bakery) next door for all your coffee and pan dulce needs.Listed in: Great Pancakes in L.A. (Area)

You must have low standards if you think this place is edible! Torta was so so, pastrami was tough, and the chili fries are memorable, not because they were tasty. They should change their name to YuckYuck! Next...

It's a small burger-ish place with cute signs on the walls and friendly staff. However, they have 65 different types of tortas. I think this is amazing. YET, the torta menu consists of NAMES ONLY!! While reading torta names like "illegal" and "gringa", "mariachi" and so on is entertaining and worth hours of fun, there are no descriptions of the sandwiches. The names are cute, but what the hell is actually in them?? On the general, I have no idea what a "mariachi" torta contains, and I really don't think I'm supposed to.
You can, and I did, ask the man at the counter what's in each sandwich, but this takes forever, and by the time you're at torta # 37, you already forgot what the hell is in torta #2! Furthermore, after holding up the line for a half an hour saying "and what's in this one? what about this one? and this one??? and...." you start to feel like one of those really annoying children who constantly asks his parents, "why does it rain? why is the sky blue? where do babies come from? can you see my imaginary friend??" I think I only asked about 7 sandwiches before I felt embarassed and gave up.
In my opinion, they should really have a menu with ingredients. They could at least print one, so that people don't have to annoyingly ask about every freaking item on the menu. But that's just my two cents.
Okay, I'm a little split on this one. I rate this three stars, but my boyfriend (who's eaten a million more tortas than me, rates it at a 4).
This place serves a pretty good sandwich. I like Unico's (by my school only) better, because their regular carne asada torta comes with a salty and spicy salsa. I am a total sucker for salty, spicy salsa. However, from what I can glean, the actual torta at this place is much tastier. -

This place is great. I've lived up the street from this burger joint since I was knee high. This place used to be about 3.00 for a hamburger special now it's about $6 .. But they are known for the best TORTAS! They have over 60 types :) theyr shakes are delicious as well! The money is mos def worth it and theyr fries are really good because of the seasoning salt they use. If you eat here make sure to eat your French fries with their dressing.. :)

Looks like your typical south-east LA burger joint... but this place uses good quality ingredients and made with love. I never knew there were 70 different tortas til I looked at their menu.
I like ordering the Torta Mariachi: Chorizo, Pierna de puerco, queso oaxaca, Beans, avocado, onions, tomato, lettuce, and jalapenos.
This torta will definately set you back on any diet you may be on, but it's delicious!
Place is family run and the owner is exptremely patient and will explain whichever torta you're interested in.
I've also been here for breakfast and had the Chilaquiles with steak and eggs....MMMMM :) those were delicious!
If you're ever in Huntington Park and looking for something that'll fill you up for a decent price...come here!
FYI: they have typical burgers and fries too, but i come here for their Tortas! Oh and try the Virgil's Root Beer, tastes really good!
and this place has more parking than tables... -

a staple of huntington park. despite the name the place is best know for its variety (50+) and amusing naming of its tortas. can't really go wrong with anyone order. they have it all. from lunch type tortas to breakfast tortas to more esoteric and ethnic choices. i could go on describing the tortas but you're better off experiencing for yourself.
honorable mention for one of the better places to get horchata. not too sugary, not too watery. done just right.
prices range depending on the torta but the ratio of food / money / satisfaction will be greater than any fast food restaurant in the area. -

They now have a menu with ALL the tortas and what they each have!!! It's great cuz u don't have to ask what each one has anymore. So far I've tried torta El Chavo, torta Mariachi, & torta Sonorense....they were all DELICIOUS!!! Sonorense wasnt as good as the other 2 but still pretty good. I plan on trying all of them :)

This place is hella good; food is tastey and decadent. Only bummer, it's cash only and that has stopped my friends and I from paying Yaya's a visit on several occasions (like who carries cash these days???). Also, not as inexpensive as some would suggest. 4.99 is starting price, but can easily go up from there; and sometimes one doesn't feel like spending 10+ dollars (if u get a drink) on fast food for lunch. However, the food is definetly delicious.

I think if you're drunk beyond retaining any memories, then im sure this place rocks and is UHmazing. But i went sober. Expecting a most excellent torta because it was highly recommended to me and this place boasts somewhere near 100 different types of tortas. It was like....like....being given a Mercedes Benz but you look under the hood and it's a toyota tercel engine (sorry for that example but i like cars and its all i could come up with at 2am lol). The tables were tiny, even for my skinny friends!! The pictures of the tortas look amazing, and when i received it, it looked totally amazing. It's until you take that first bite when you realize that these tortas are all show and no flavor. The melted cheese looked sooooo good when i pulled it apart, but it had no flavor. Everything was kinda blah and unsatisfying. I ordered onion rings and was disappointed in the small portion given. I was with a group of like 12 people and didnt hear one decent compliment from anyone. If you're in the mood for a good torta, you're better off hitting up a taco truck or a taquero up and down any of the nearby streets. YaYa's was a NoNo.
