Review Highlights
I was a loyal customer of Commuknity, which has been closed for almost a year, and I think Yarndogs is it. It's a little out of the way for me (I'm from Milpitas), but the selection is wonderful, and the staff is great. They carry Cascade, Berroco, Dream in Color, Malabrigo, Misti Alpaca, TONS of Noro... I think I fell in love the minute I stepped in the door. They also offer an extensive range of classes, so if you're looking to learn anything from drop spindle to basic knitting to colorwork, they've got it.
Also (and this is important to me, at least), they've got their own little parking lot. Because the last thing you want to do when you need a yarn fix is to circle around looking for street parking.
I found some of the staff to know very little and I am not an advanced knitter.
I also found some of the staff to be a bit unfriendly. I spent over $100 one day and went back for advice the next day only to feel a bit snubbed.
I much preferred Knitting Arts before it closed.
I would only use this store as a last resort, although I will say the prices are fairly reasonable.
I live near Los Gatos, so Yarndogs is often my go to/quick trip yarn shop. I was nervous at first to visit, reading some of the Yelp reviews; however, with a few very rare exceptions, I've always had very positive experiences with the staff. I'm so happy that they now offer Malabrigo and Lorna's Laces. I very rarely walk out without spending way more than I'd planned to. :) Great range of tools, as well! As for Otis, resident yarn dog? He's adorable and I always enjoy a snorgle or two with him. My only drawback is being right next to the high school, which makes for tricky scheduling to avoid masses of teens and traffic. I definitely recommend a visit for those looking for mid to high end fibers.
I think I saw Yarndogs in a bad light before. The supplies they carry are very high end, and the last few times I've been into the shop without my crochet group, I have been treated much better. People are more welcoming and eager to help. I don't go to Los Gatos very often, but when I do go, Yarndogs is a must visit shop for me.

This is the type of place you read about in books...a mythical shop that is great, friendly and you always seem to bump into friends when you go. They are always helpful in helping you get of the mess you knitted yourself into...even if you didn't buy the yarn from them.
This is a great shop--the employees are really friendly and recognize lots of their customers, they offer great classes, are involved in the community, and most of all, their yarn selection is top-notch. They've recently added yarn by Dream in Color and Malabrigo, and they carry everything from Noro to Rowan to Mission Falls. I've found the staff to really know their stuff, and go out of their way to help you find the right pattern or yarn.
This yarn store is one of my favorite places to go. Anytime dogs and knitting are involved I'm so down! However since I'm pretty young a lot of places don't treat me with the same respect as older women who look like knitters get. That gets so old, cuz i know what I'm doing thank you! And unfortuatley I get that here sometimes, but its rare and obviously depends on whose in the shop. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and its pretty easy to navigate the store to find what you need. The selection is pretty nice given that the store isn't that large, and it's definately worth it to come here if you really like to knit.
There are so few yarn shops nowadays. However, how many do you need when you have Yarndogs in the neighborhood? I hadn't knitted in oh, a lot of years, and wanted to get into it again. The ladies at Yarndogs took the time to show me around the shop and its wares. They carry high end yarns which will make even my getting-back-to-it project look super professional when I'm done. My friend, who has never knit, wanted to take a lesson. Margaret was so patient, just like having your own grandma teaching you. While we were there, there was a kids knitting class going on, 8 -12 year olds learning to knit, how sweet. One of the younger staff was working with them. Amy helped me find a pattern, yarn, and the right needles to get me back knitting, What a great place and a lovely reentry into needlecrafts.
Nice well-organized shop. Rowan and Debbie bliss yarns. When I stopped by they had the latest Addi Turbo lace needles in several sizes.
Parking is a bit tricky.
This is my favorite yarn store, bar none. The staff is knowledgeable and incredibly personable, which isn't always the case in bay area yarn stores. They have a great selection of yarns from budget-friendly to luxury fibers, they stock EVERY color from the super-yummy Manos del Uraguay line (which is a women's cooperative, so I love buying this yarn), have a store dog (Otis), book club, fun classes, some free workshops, special events, including a monthly "stitching for good" where knitters and crocheters make products for local charities from donated yarn, and great sales on a very regular basis. The very best part is that the store, though small, is tidy and really intelligently organized and definitely encourages creativity.
Though I visit other yarn stores, I'm a regular here. Deborah, Cris (owners) and all the staff are what really keep me coming back.
It's small but nice. The owner is very nice & helpful. She goes out of her way to explain things & show merchandise.. I took a class with her at Stitches once & had not done any of my homework (bad girl). She had knit a bunch of extra swatches & gave me some. That really stays with me. I do not live all that close considering there are a zillion yarn shops super close to me, but I will definitely go back.
Great little yarn shop in Los Gatos. Nice selection of fun yarns and more traditional stuff as well. They also have a huge selection of books - I don't think I've ever seen a yarn shop with as many books as this one. Handy accessories too. They offer a broad range of classes from Knitting 101 to more elaborate project classes and advanced technique classes. The woman who owns this shop is friendly and knowledgable. My 2-year-old loves to visit Otis, the resident pooch at Yarn Dogs.
Just went in there for the first time today. I am very happy with this place and would recommend that everyone into knitting/crocheting become a customer here! I presented myself as a beginner (which I really am) and the woman helping me had a lot of information for me. She never overwhelmed me or made me feel like, well, a beginner! I will return as long as I am knitting :)
One of my favorite knitting stores. Small, but adequately stocked with beautiful yarn, needles, books and finishing accessories. They also have fantastic sales and fun classes. They offered a class that finally allowed me to knit something for my husband -a wool cap with skulls.
One of the nice things about frequenting a small, family-owned business is that you can, if you choose, get to know the staff (usually family) rather well. At Yarndogs, the owners invite you into their "home", and in turn, treat you to a higher level of personal service.
Their selection of yarn and gadgets is excellent; however, their stock of books is by far the best in the area.
There are many nice yarn shops in the Bay Area, but what puts Yarndogs in a special category is their commitment to community - their support of the Avon Breast Cancer Walk - Knitters for Knockers (gotta love that), recycling yarn scraps for doggie blankets and cancer patient caps, etc.
Plus, I love that I can cuddle with Otis, the resident Yarndog! And, I can bring my dog in if I want to.
Lovely selection of yarns, very affable and helpful people work and teach here, and they teach some wonderful classes! Any problem you might have with knitting or crocheting, bring it in, and they're more than happy to give advice and assistance. =^_^=
This is a great shop! They have a wonderful selection of books, pattern booklets and individual patterns, a large needle selection (including interchangeable needle kits, lots of Addi's and Crystal Palace bamboo) and a great selection of yarn. They have lots of knit-alongs and classes and if you need a class that's not listed, just ask. There are a lot of sample projects to look at for ideas and inspiration for every skill level. They have a knowledgeable staff that can answer your questions, whether they are project specific questions or general knitting questions and who can help you with yarn substitutions for your projects. It's a nice friendly place to drop by for some knitting time on their comfy couch and to visit with other knitters (and crocheters!). This is my favorite LYS!
