We have been going to Yanni's for years, and realized I have yet to write a review!
Well - Yanni's is our "go-to" restaurant here in San Diego. The food is ALWAYS excellent. The "specials" are very good and I usually order from there. That does not take away from the regular menu - everything I have tried has never disappointed. My favorites are - lamb Osso bucco and any rissotto dish (usually specials).
Yanni's and his wife Denise are wonderful, friendly people and always make you feel warm and welcome. Service can be slow and spotty at times. Particularly on very busy nights. But you NEVER feel rushed.
Highly recommended and in my opinion, one of the "finds" in San Diego! -

Had lunch here with the mister this past monday. We've been hearing so much about this place and it's literally down the street so we finally decided to give this place a try. Of course, we looked on yelp to see what other yelp folks recommended.
The calamari steak sandwich was a big hit on yelp so my boyfriend ordered it and I ordered the chicken skewers. My meal came with 1 skewer of chicken pieces but that's okay because they were decent portions, a skewer of veggies, rice, and a salad. I liked mine but it was alright. Nothing special. My boyfriend liked his calamari steak sandwich but didn't like the caesar salad.
Overall, the food was ok but the service was on point. -

Great atmosphere, upscale casual. Jeanne and I sat on the patio next to the fountain. Both of us had eaten a late lunch so we ordered light meals.
Jeanne had the Spring Salad which she polished off in no time saying she would order it again.
I had the Spinach Salad which was great and I would order again.
We ordered the Cookie Crust Cheesecake and the Budino along with single shots of espresso for dessert. Ohmigod! If nothing else you have to go for dessert. We were told they make the cheesecake and I believe it. The waiter recommended the Budino. Never heard of it but will never forget it. If I am ever in the area I will drop in just for the Budino and espresso.
Jeanne and I both agreed this restaurant is a keeper. -

I've been going to Yanni's Bistro for over 5 years and I'm never disappointed. My favorite is the Spaghetti Bolognese. But I've tried many of the specials, which change daily, and have enjoyed every meal.
The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the staff is the same.
Okay, I cannot forget to mention the budino!! This dessert is devine. I get a little sad when I forget to leave room for it. -

Our staff Christmas dinner is held here every year and every year food gets better and better. I am a fan of the lamb and beef skewers. The place is a mix of Greek and Italian cuisine. Service is friendly and fast, now food is slow but it would be for a group like ours. Dessert is heaven here. You CAN NOT leave without the Tiramisu. I accompanied this treat with coffee and I was a happy camper.

I don't get it. Went here a second time and the service was not great and the food was very bland. No flavor what so ever. I know a lot of people who love this place. I want to love it but I can't. What am I missing?

This place has super good food and the waiters are really nice. I give it 5 stars just for the budino alone! I have tried to figure out what's in it and re-create it but I just cant. I don't like coming here with my kids because they are such picky eaters, but it's a nice place to come with a date or a friend. The prices are in the mid to high range, but worth the money for something different.

Yannis bistro is possibly the best Italian Bistro is So Cal. First the appetizers many of which could be a meal itself. The bread, garlic flatbread, sliced baguettes to be dipped in olive oil and high quality balsamic vinegar. Then the mussels I prefer them in the tomato sauce. Calamari and brushettta to follow. The pasta ; lamb cannolini. Enough said. Finish off the evening with the best tiramisu and baklava (yes baklava) ever and you're done. Worth mentioning the baklava is served hot which makes the honey melt into an oooey gooey carmel like sauce. (cue salvation ). Also Yanni the owner is so nice and comes to your table to Serbia you're doing and to chat. Take that Olive Garden

Now this is a real neighborhood gem! Went there with a group of 6 got seated within 5 minutes and the place was packed (for a Thursday night)! Not disappointed at all, my husband ordered the Veal Chop, I had the chicken Parm & the rest ordered pasta dishes. From the bread basket to the tiramasu all delicious! I found my "to go place" & can't wait to take my daughter & son-in-law!

Someone ordered the food from here to-go which was how I experienced the food from here. It was really good! I tried the smoked salmon pita, duck risotto, and seafood linguini. The seafood linguini was okay- it wasn't bland but it wasn't out of this world. However I found the smoked salmon pita and duck risotto to be quite delicious! The salmon pita's salmon had a perfectly smoked flavor that wasn't too strong, and the duck risotto had this really special sauce that tasted addictingly good. I definitely plan to come back here and try their other dishes.

I'd give it 3.5 stars, but can't stretch to 4.
Not sure how my fellow Yelpers are calling this a $$ place. My tab for 2 people for dinner including tip was $120 with just one drink each and one shared dessert. I'd definitely put it in the $$$ price range...
Place was pretty packed inside on a random Thursday night at 730pm. We sat in the little outdoor dining room they have set up, which was nice and quiet.
The busboy seemed to really not enjoy his job. When he came to drop off the bread he left it on the edge of the table, as far away as possible from the two of us. I kind of chuckled about it and had to stretch all the way over to bring it close enough for my companion to eat. But we noticed he did the exact same to two other tables while we were eating. Kind of a head-scratcher at a place that charges premium prices for premium food and service.
The food was good. Complimentary bread was tasty, though we were not offered a refill of it until our meal was nearly over (and would have happily eaten more while waiting for the entrees). I tried the pork chop special and it was excellent. The side dishes were small. The waitress had suggested I try the parmesan mashed potatoes, and I did. But there were just four forkfuls of potatoes on my plate. I felt like I was rationing them throughout the meal. The butternut squash was good, also about four forkfuls. Carrots were dry. Green beans were bland.
Overall I was disappointed. Not because it was bad. But because it had the makings of so much more. I can see going back, in hopes of seeing that potential achieved. But it just wasn't there this visit. For the $120 I spent, I could have had two comparable meals somewhere else. I don't mind paying the premium when it's earned, but it wasn't this time. -

Best. Meal! We moved to San Diego two years ago and have been looking for ANYTHING decent in our neighborhood and have been sorely missing our old town, but YANNIS oh my gosh YANNIS helped us last night so much--we felt like we finally found a fantastic place to take our friends. I have the pesto chicken pasta, my husband had beef kebobs and they came with mashed sweet potatos with nutmeg and skewered veggies. My 8 month old son loved EVERYTHING too :-)
Thanks Yannis! We WILL be back. -

Yanni's is located next door to Nothing Bundt Cakes, which is really the only reason why I went into this shopping center in the first place. I'm glad I did! They have great, fresh food and wonderful helpful people working there. We came on either Saturday or Sunday morning right when they opened. The waitress helped us pick out our food and suggested we order what is in season...
STRAWBERRY SEASON!! best season out of all seasons...so i ordered the strawberry salad which was delicious. lots of strawberries mixed with baby greens and balsamic vinaigrette..
dessert is what took the cake though (well kinda, we got cake from next door ;]). They had strawberries (in season of course) drizzled with balsamic vinegar, dipped in cracked black pepper. sounds very odd, but the balsamic vinegar and black pepper brought out the sweetness of the strawberries, a must try!! -

Bouillabaise $22 great taste , small portion. Scallops were overcooked and the portion was REALLY small.
I really like this restaurant the fact that it's close to my friend's house and it's a cute cozy italian restaurant. Service was good and the place is clean.
Ordered a dessert from here, supposedly their #1- famous dessert in which i have forgotten the name of it. But it's a cold dessert with dark chocolate pudding drizzled with vanilla glaze / cream on top. when the waitress was describing this dessert to me, i thought mmmm must be really good. I guess she hyped it up too much because when i first took my bite i didn't think it was that special. It was pretty much just chocolate fudge / pudding consistency and it did not WOW me at all . I think it would have been more satisfying if i were to go around the corner to Lapperts and get a scoop of ice cream or a cup of dole whip instead.
I would like to go back to Yanni's to try a different dish. But based on the portion and the price, i think it's a little be on the pricey side. I'd much rather spend my money at the Barrel Room than at Yanni's for sure. -

Only in Southern California can you find a gem like Yanni's tucked away at the back of a non-descript strip mall. I've been to Yanni's three times now, once a week for the last three weeks--yes, it's THAT good.
The wine selection here is amazing...I've found several new favs simply by trying the by the glass selections. We have yet to actually sit in the restaurant. My fiance and I haven't made it past the bar, where we've imbibed some of the best reds I've ever had in a restaurant and noshed on appetizers (We are huge fans of the Mediterranean Plate--Yanni, if you read this, please add a couple slices of melon to go with the prosciutto!). For the two of us, the Med Plate and a couple of glasses of wine, add up to the perfect date night.
The service is always friendly and the bartenders/servers are very knowledgeable about the wines they serve and happy to offer a taste before you commit to a glass.
Oh, and the chocolatey/vanilla-ey desert? Yummo! It goes perfectly with a chewy red zin or cabernet!
We love Yanni's. After 3 years in Wyoming to finish my degree and having to drive three hours plus round trip to Fort Collins, CO just to eat something other than bar and grill food--we're thrilled to have Yanni's just around the corner from home. -

The food and service is great! This restaurant has the Mediterranean / Italian flare. It is one of my favorite places to dine, especially on special occasions such as Mother's Day and Birthdays. Although some dishes are pricey, the food is worth it.
The Sardinia (calamari sandwich) with the pita bread was soft and the calamari was perfectly breaded. They definitely did not skimp on the calamari meat.
Everything from the Appetizers to the Desserts are so good.
The ambiance is warm and inviting. They have a nice patio area to dine, especially on a nice and warm San Diego day. -

Food, wine selection, and service was wonderful. Pleasantly surprised with their thorough wine selection -- lots of Old World red wines. Food portions were extremely generous -- homemade raviolis were stuffed with so much filling.
Not a "romantic" dining experience on a Saturday night, very loud, packed, fun, and family-oriented. Parking lot was booked. Definitely recommend reservations. -

This restaurant deserves the high Yelp ratings. My boyfriend took me here last weekend simply because he had found it on Yelp. The guy at the table next to us said he was influenced by the Yelp reviews to try it too.
First off, Yanni's has a great atmosphere. I wasn't expecting it to be so pleasant inside since it is located near a typical San Diego strip mall. But the decor set the right tone.
I ordered the salmon lemoni ($19) and my boyfriend order the shrimp linguine ($15). We also picked out a wine from their impressive selection. My salmon was delicious, and what made it really special was the lobster-bisque type sauce that perfectly meshed with the salmon and the accompanying mashed potatoes. Also, there seemed to be some sort of sweet potato mash as another side, and that was pretty good as well. The shrimp linguine was good, and from what I saw, my boyfriend devoured it pretty quickly. I have heard that there is some type of Mediterranean gelato dessert that is a must-try, but the entrees were so filling that we couldn't push ourselves to order dessert.
Our waitress was very kind and helpful in picking a wine. We showed up on a busy Friday night around 7:30pm and while the place was filled, we did not have to wait long (5 mins) to be seated.
Highly recommend Yanni's as a date restaurant. There were also a lot of larger parties with families, so it seems to be kid-friendly. -

I, too, came here after a thorough Yelp scouring. (Yanni's is inconveniently placed on the far end of what seems to be a very dead shopping center accessible from only one side of Scripps Poway--no wonder I missed this place.)
Yanni's can best be described as the outcast love-child of Olive Garden and Il Fornaio. There's even a ridiculously cute outdoorsy area covered with icicle lights if you're looking for a more intimate dining experience.
The cuisine is more Italian than Greek--the hummus was far too olive oil-y--but the beef/lamb kabobs and the pastas were excellent. (And although overpriced, the spinach salad with raspberry vinaigrette definitely hit the spot.) Because we were first-timers, our waitress even gave me and my parents a free budino for dessert: a thick chocolate mousse coated with vanilla bean sauce and topped with a dollop of whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings. My parents waited a whopping two minutes for me to finish the thing.
A HUGE wine selection and tasty complimentary bread = hello, potential date night. -
Review from Oren T.
Los Angeles, CA
As someone who has become steadily jaded by mediocre food at restaurants that charge around $18- $22 per entree, I was so happily surprised by the high caliber of quality flavor in my meal here. Honestly, this is one of the best newly tried restaurants I have eaten at in a long time.
I came for an early dinner on a Saturday night, and the place was already packed. The place feels more inline as a happening lunchtime spot, but lacks a certain sophistication for the nighttime environment., However, none of that matters once you eat the food.
I started with the Arancini, fried risotto balls filled with beef and vegetables on top of a shallow amount of marinara sauce. They were really tasty, and were not heavy at all. Not as light as a salad, but still light enough for an app.
For the main course, I had the Cappellini Tourkolimano, a linguine and shrimp dish in a marinara sauce. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, and the shrimp were cooked perfectly as well, with the right amount of crunch as you bit into them.
Lastly, I had the highly touted budino. It was really good, but I have has better (go to Pizzeria Mozza in Los Angeles for the best butterscotch budino ever). The budino here is rich enough that sharing it between 2-3 people wouldn't be a problem. And for those like me who have to have an espresso drink at the end of the meal (ideally Italian, right?), they serve Lavazza.
Overall, a great experience. Thank you Yelpers for the recommendation! -

It's really more like 2.5 stars, but alas, I can't half-star people.
Dined here on a Sunday night with family. Shared the risotto balls appetizer, a salad and had a chicken entree (similar to a chicken picatta).
Maybe I should have been drinking, after seeing all the reviews talking about the wine, but honestly, I thought the food lacked flavor and was just so-so. There was something with my chicken... like a portion of it was smooshed down cartilage or something. The salad lacked greens, though the vinaigrette was good. The risotto appetizer was tasty and surprisingly light considering it was a breaded ball of rice, and it had good flavor, but I probably wouldn't order it again.
The prices also seemed a bit high for what you got.
All in all, a decent dining experience but not something I'd seek out again. -

So sad. Very disappointed in my meal today. Had very high hopes due to the great recommendations & yelpers. Service was good. However, all dishes fell short due to a lack of flavor. We tried the fried calamari, burrata & prociutto, lamb cannelloni, pasta special, and chicken Marsala. I think it may just be due to poorer quality ingredients. The calamari was lightly crispy but had no real flavor. The chicken Marsala had overcooked chicken and was also very bland. As for the Pasta special, all it had was a spicy note and again bland. I won't be returning.

I have been here twice now and I think it really could be 4 stars if they just made the food better some how. The atmosphere is nice and could be cute with candles and twinkly lights at night maybe. I have only been here at lunch so I dont know how the dinner here is. The items on the menu sound so great but only half of the things Ive had here were really tasty. The best thing I ate here was the tiramisu, it was amazing! The spanakopita was very nice also. But the salad I had was not very good at all, and the penne with roasted vegetables was almost good, but there was a strange bitter taste to it that I can only guess came from the way the eggplant was prepared. The hummus and pita was nice too.
I would try this place again, but only if Im already in the area for another reason. -
Review from Kevin H.
San Diego, CA
I'll just start with the fact that Yanni's Bistro is my favorite restaurant. They are located in a small strip mall on the corner of Scripps Poway Parkway and Pomerado Road. Back when I lived in Rancho Peñasquitos I ate there at least once a week. Their variety of food always had me going back for something different. I've since moved further south now, putting me closer to the hub of fine dining, but I still find time to make the excursion to Poway to dine at Yanni's, though not as often as I use to.
The food at Yanni's is exceptional. First off the bread basket they serve is some of the best bread I've had in the states. They serve a combination of crisp flatbread and sliced baguette. They serve this with olive oil and a really good balsamic vinegar. Next, one should order an appetizer, or three. One could make a meal on just the appetizers themselves. Some of the highlights are the Fried Calamari, Arancini and Smoked Salmon Pita, but the cream of the crop is the Saganaki and the Mussels in Saffron Sauce. The Saganaki is done differently than most Greek places. Instead of using brandy or ouzo and then lighting the cheese on fire at the table, they bake it in the oven in white wine. It is possibly one of my favorite dishes on record. I'll forego the shouting of 'Opa!' while watching the waitress dodge the flames if it means having the most amazing tasting Saganaki. It goes great with the baguette slices in the bread basket, which you should also use to sop up the remaining wine sauce. The other appetizer of note is the Mussels in the saffron sauce. I'm not a huge fan of mussels but in the saffron sauce they are scrumptious. Once again, use the baguettes to sop up the sauce.
Yanni's also has some of my favorite salads. One of my staples is the Spring Mix Salad with Prosciutto added. Possibly my favorite salad. Their pastas are also excellent, with the Spaghetti Bolognese and Lamb Cannelloni rating among my favorites. During lunch they also serve good sandwiches (though not during dinner). My favorite sandwich is the Napoli, which is prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and tomato. Yum! On those days I actually decide to order an entree, the Salmon Livornese and Salmon Lemoni are my standbys when one of the specials don't appeal to me. One of the best entrees I had here was a Bacon Wrapped Scallop special that was incredible. But save room for dessert. Their Tiramisu is one of the best I've had. I would have it more often if it wasn't for the mother of all desserts, the Budino. Their Budino comes in a cup and is a layer of chocolate pudding, vanilla creme, strawberries, whip cream and shaved chocolate. It is as delicious as it is rich.
I would be remised if I didn't mention Yanni's wine list. It runs about 10 pages and contains many great wines, with one page of the list also being available by the glass. If your in the mood for bringing your own, they only have a $10 corkage fee. Also try their Sangria. It is very refreshing and the layer the wines and juices, making a great presentation (though some waitresses/waiters are better then others when creating the layers). -

San Diego, CA
My colleague liked panni sandwich, but i can't say any since I am not big fan of panni. I found seafood linguine I had was just okay with a bit pricey for a lunch, and did not go back for lunch itself.
but, I happened to come here more than often for happy hour and had all their happy hour menu more than I wanted. Out of all HH menu, I would say my favorite is spinach salad . All other menu are okay as you can imagine from regular happy hour menu. The complimentary flat breads are everybody's favorite.
Price could be seen as a bit high in lunch and dinner, but, now I think it's reasonable price considering the quality of food and service you get in the Poway area. I would have given 3 stars for this restaurant if it was located in major restaurant area.Knowing this restaurant owner, however, has such a great pride and keep the quality in the Poway area, I think 4 stars are deserve. -
Review from Victor C.
Came in one day and noticed that this place was full of people at 8PM. Apparently there was a game before.
I ordered the Chicken Boscaiola which was great..Came with potatoes and mashed apples (I think?) Even though the portions were big, I managed to finish the whole thing. It was too delicious to take home and reheat in the oven the next day.
While you're waiting for your order, you also get bread and garlic chips. Next time I'll just fill up on the bread and take my meal togo.
If you ask nicely, the friendly servers might also give you a bag of bread and chips to take home. Awesome! -

I've been here 3 times now and just love this place.
I had the Filet mignon w/ mushroom sauce, cooked perfectly MR. My friend had a Greek salad with grilled shrimp, I didn't try it but it looked great. We split the Tiramisu. Seriously BEST Tiramisu EVER!
Our severs have always been really friendly and seem to enjoy working there. -

Inconveniently located in the same shopping center as Wong's Wok, Yanni's is by far the best greek food I've ever tasted. I mean, I haven't really tasted a lot besides... greek salads... but I'm a fan of this place. Service is great, chicken is always grilled perfect (not dry), and great, light meals that are still filling. A tad bit pricey, but nothing unexpected for the atmosphere and quality of food.

Happy to find this place in the suburban wasteland called Poway. Made reservations for a Friday night and was glad I did the place was packed. They open the door upon your arrival and the place is warm and inviting.
Great extensive wine list and a menu with too many delectable offerings to choose from. Everyone at the table got different dishes and they all were outstanding except the calamari, a bit overdone.
I would go back again for sure I mean there was like 10 other things I wanted to try. -

Great place, atmosphere, food & wine. This is the place we like to take friends that are visiting from out of town. I've tried many things on the menu...never been disappointed. A little on the pricey side, but I'm okay with paying more when we are going for a special occasion. Staff is always very friendly.

Wow where to start with this fine establishment!! My wife introduced me to this wonderful restaurant and I thank her for it every time we eat here.
I believe its family owned and operated and you can tell with the great service and food. Great selection of wine and and lots of featured wine tastings during the month. Indoor and outdoor seating. Parking can be hard on weekend nights but lots of parking in the far parking lot.
Great food all around starting with the tzatziki. Its a cucumber like dip with pita bread. Absolutely fantastic!! For dinner I always get the beef skewers and for desert the budino is to die for. -

San Diego, CA
Though I've never been here for dinner, I've been enjoying their lunch menu for more than a few years now. The place is pleasantly laid out, with ample room between tables so you can enjoy a conversation without another table within earshot, and the outside patio is covered so it's not too hot in the summer.
The staff is very friendly, efficient and professional; more so than any other casual spot. If you're opening your own restaurant, I'd recommend stopping in here to learn how to hire and train a staff. No matter how busy they are, it's always great service.
The sandwiches are my usual order, but I've had some really nice pasta dishes and specials here as well. Today I had their calamari sandwich on a french baguette, and it's become my favorite. Given the choice of a Caesar salad, tomato and roasted pepper soup or organic greens with an apple vinaigrette, I went with the organic greens.
The greens were fresh, and the vinaigrette was perfectly balanced; I'm tempted to see if they'll sell me some a bottle of it. The sandwich, as usual, was damn good. Plenty of calamari, lightly breaded, well-seasoned and cooked to tender deliciousness. The bread was fresh, tasty and had just the right crunch to the crust. Mozzarella, roasted peppers, and an aioli with lemon and pesto brought it all together.
A fine afternoon meal, and one that I'm sure to order again. -

I've only been here for lunch but so far so good! They're pastas are delicious and I love the bread/crackers that they serve you in the beginning. I can fill up on just that!
It's a nice mediterranean fusion restaurant with a good amount of selection. They have pastas, sandwiches, salads, soups, etc. The service is good and the food is good, what more can I say? -

This place can be s little pricey. I got $10 salad for lunch. Their salads don't come with any protein so I opted to add chicken for $4. The total came out to $18 for a lunch salad! So I won't be doing that again. The complimentary flat breads are great.
I've also had the French bruschetta, which is very different.(4 out of 5)
The service is good and the owner takes a lot of pride in restaurant. -
Review from Jessica G.
San Diego, CA
For a local restaurant, it has everything that I like.
Good wine list, good beer on tap, nicely decorated and relaxing ambiance, and good food.
I really like the bruschetta for an appetizer and the lamb kabob plate is amazing. Patio offers really nice seating with a water fountain in the background and lights in the bushes. They turn the heaters on and pull down the plastic walls when it gets cold, but still makes for a nice evening. Good for kids too - highchairs and everything.
It's expensive for a tiny place, but I think it's worth it if you want a nice dinner and not have to drive (for the Scripps Ranch folks).
