The bf gets out of school late on Mondays and so we always have a late dinner. Either of us felt like cooking so we decided on take-out.
I read the reviews on here and as with just about every review on here some were good and some were bad. I decided to be my own judge.
We ordered the beef broccoli, mongolian chicken, vegetable chow mien and stem rice. Delivery was super fast and the food smelled awesome. The beef broccoli was super yummy and had a delicious flavoring to it. The chow mien was just as great with lots of fresh veggies. The Mongolian chicken was only ok- but I cannot really judge since I don't usually get Mongolian chicken. Overall yummy dinner! -

We ordered 3 entrees, and probably will not order from this restaurant again. Makes me sad since we're looking for a decent/good Chinese delivery joint in the area.
Honey glazed shrimp with walnuts: decent, though too much sauce. Remedied by scraping off excess.
Beef w/ broccoli: ordered this one based on the relatively good reviews. It was pretty nasty, too much goopy sauce, and the broccoli was definitely over-cooked.
Kung pao chicken: too much sauce again. That seems to be a common theme. It just plain didn't taste good.
Delivery to Emeryville was $4.75, which is totally fine, and the driver was given additional tip as well. I figure we're basically paying the cost of an extra entree for the convenience.
What was not totally fine was the driver trying to be all sneaky about it. When he had me sign the receipt he had it folded over so I wouldn't see the various charges etc. I was opening the receipt to sign it and he tried to get me to sign on just half of it so I didn't unfold it and see the extra charges. Lame. -

If I could give 1.5 stars I would.
It was 9:30 pm and I was REALLY REALLY hungry....RAVENOUS... but somehow I lost my appetite.
Sometimes Chinese restaurants just smell like an indoor pool or old aquarium, and they are all humid inside. Maybe it was just the lobster tank, but it makes me feel nauseous. So I played it safe and ordered vegetarian and forced down a few forkfuls
While waiting for our food, it appeared as though they were closing down and taking some large trash cans to the sidewalk, all of which were coated in a thick grease. My guess is that those trash cans just sit in the kitchen and are never cleaned. But who knows?
Not my favorite. My friend said his food was okay. -

Just your typical Chinese food. It will hit the spot if you have the craving but it's definitely not that great. I ordered delivery from here once and it was terrible (watery sauce, mushy meat), but they've usually given me and my friends pretty good Chinese food at other times.

Wish there was a "HELL NO" option. I went there because I was craving seafood spicy soup. After coming home to indulge on this soup, I noticed there was tofu in it---lots of tofu, hence, where is the seafood!!!! Granted, there was a little bit of seafood in it but, I have NEVER had this soup with tofu. I called to tell them that there was tofu in it and the girl said, "oh yeah, we put tofu in ours!" Excuse me, then you should have called this tofu, seafood spicy soup. Needless to say, that the service from that point on was less than poor. FIRST AND LAST TIME AT THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've tried several other Chinese food places in the Lake Merritt area and have been disappointed. As far as American style Chinese food goes, this was pretty good!
The Mongolian Beef had lots of beef in it, and the sauce was nice and spicy. The walnut prawns came with lots of prawns and again the sauce was good.
The service was also really good, they delivered fast and even came back to bring the rice that I forgot to order. Can't wait to order here again! Thank you! -

Yang Chow cannot be described in any other way than GHETTO-FABULOUS
Hole in the wall, dangling popcorn ceilings, fake plastic flowers, spray painted frames, DIY-decorations, sticky faux leather chairs, ugly faded wall art, delicious because it's cheap and trashy chinese food, the whole shebang. They don't even set the table with chopsticks; I love it!
Only thing I can really say is beware of what is fried/battered and sauced up if you're not trying to get full off of a couple bites. Otherwise this is your go-to for movie-night-takeout-and-leftovers-for-lunch-the-ne xt-day meal.
Obviously, don't take her here on a first date. Duh.Listed in: Oakland

I think as a a chef I have to let people know about the vomit that this restaurant calls food that my wife brought home was inedible. The noodles in a mess of oil. The gelatin and breading turn into a big sponge was not on the chicken the way orange chicken should be made. I had better frozen product by far. My wife fish and brocoli stunk (too fishy). The pork and three times as many veggies was a clumps of cornstarch mess. How anyone would eat this crap is beyond me. Giving a star at all is a mistake.
Best hope is this place burns down. My wife also said this place was filthy. My daughter had to use the bathroom so my wife felt obligated to purchase this 40 dollars of puke. Stay away -

3.5 stars. Solid. I mean, what more can you ask for? Chinese food that delivers AND takes orders online!!! I'm sure there are better Chinese places out there, but this place is just way too convenient! Caveat: We order Chinese food like white people, so I know nothing about authenticity. I just know what I like and that I'll feel like a lard-ass after.
* Sweet and sour pork - never liked it before I had it here. It looks so disgusting--deep fried pieces of shitty pork meat, deep fried and covered in painfully artificial red gelatinous goo. Soooooo freakin' good once it's in your mouth!!!
* Broccoli beef - pretty decent cuts of beef
* Garlic noodles - b-o-m-b! If you spend over $20 on Grubhub you get these bad boys FREE!
* Vegetarian spring rolls - deep fried!!! Not worth it. Aren't those called egg rolls???
* Mongolian beef - meh, has some heat, but not enough flavor to ever order again.
* Chicken chow fun - meh, never liked chow fun before anyway. Bland, greasy, but with nice cuts of chicken, surprisingly.Listed in: Delivery in the Bay

My husband and I just tried out this place for take out. I would give it no stars if that was an option. We made a mistake by not consulting yelp first! We ordered chicken and broccoli veggie Mu shu and veggie chow main. Greasy, no flavor and hours later I threw the whole thing up. The chicken was dark meat which is fatty and gross.

WTH!
I've ordered from this place several times.... the food isn't bad, ordered online via http://eat24hours.com..
But today I found not one, but TWO rubberbands in my fried rice! Need I say more?!
If I were them: "Please don't!!!"
For those wondering: hell yeah, I ate the rice... i was hungry, man! -

So I haven't had too many of their dishes but so far what I've tasted is good. A cousin of mine recommended this place for inexpensive good Chinese take-out and we agree.
We've always ordered the "Dynasty Dinner" (it comes with 2 Veggie egg rolls, 4 Shrimp egg rolls, Won Ton Soup, broccoli beef, special chow mein and steamed rice). The special chow mein comes with chicken, shrimp AND beef so it's yummy!!
It's advertized as dinner for 2 but it is alot of food for even hubby and me, and I think we eat alot. It's only $22 and we always have a lot of leftovers, we've fed 4 people with that too and there have still been left overs!! My favorite is their eggrolls and the special chow mein. I love greasy chow mein so that's why i like it, it is flavorful and greasy but not gross.
Hubby also likes the honey walnut glaze shrimp because he loves sweet shrimp. I think it's too sweet but it's $10 and I think the portion is reasonable.
It is also really hard to find parking on grand ave. so plan on walking a bit .
I know there are fancier places for chinese food but I remain a fan of this place for take out and because it's good and inexpensive and definitely better than places like "panda express" and such. -

Just had delivery of black bean flounder and asparagus and shrimp potstickers. YUM!! Very fresh and flavorful. Alot of restaurants have a really high deivery minimum and then charge a fee to deliver on top of that. They are very reasonable.

I ordered from this place via http://eat24hours.com/
The delivery service was good, and the food was reasonably tasty, but after eating it I was left with the feeling that it wasn't very good for me. Probably the strange aftertaste (MSG?). The wontons were really tasty, though. -

........MSG OVER LOAD......
Oh wow... I think I'll be mummified after the food I just ate and the amount of msg that was in it.
I just had some food from here and quickly started to drink down a mass amounts of water as I noticed my body was being dried out like a mummy. I could literally see my black skin turning into ash....
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy MSG at small amounts; I really don't mind it at all! But got damn, as I kept eating I kept noticing that the amount of MSG in their food was crazy..
And if they don't use MSG, which I am pretty sure they do; then what ever seasonings they are using are crazy and over the top.

I've eaten at Yang Chow about 3 times.
The service has always been good.
I love the hot and sour soup there. It is actually hot and sour, like its supposed to be.
The sweet and sour mushrooms are good. It could actually be a great meat alternative for vegetarians.
Everything else I've had has been consistently good (fried rice, fried ribs, grilled prawns w/ garlic noodles, chicken & broccoli). Its pretty much your average Chinese food place. Good food... but not great. Nothing to really write home about. -

Chicken Broccoli
Mongolian Beef - Medium
Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp
Special Fried Rice (Shrimp, Chicken, Beef)
The chicken was a little dry but the broccoli was amazing. I wasn't too big of a fan of the Mongolian beef. Seemed rubbery to me. I absolutely loved the Shrimp. It was to die for. And the rice was great too.
Delivery estimated from 45 mins to 1 hour. Came in about 40 mins. Was very pleased. They also included soy sauce and napkins like I had asked :) -

This review is only for the Orange Fried chicken and the Garlic Hot Spiced Chicken (also fried). I recommend requesting it with White Meat chicken only as you will get way more quality meat for your money. They have, without a doubt, the best fried chicken and sauces of any Chinese restaurant I have eaten at in the bay area. The dipping sauces are phenomenal and the chicken is perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining tender in the middle. I can't say as I recommend anything else from Yang Chow based on my experiences; however, if you are in the mood for fried chicken, Chinese style, this is absolutely the place to order from. Food always comes extremely quickly and piping hot.

I realize anything is going to taste great if it's the first food you've eaten all day and you just left the emergency room after a grueling five hours. But oh. my. god. this was delicious!
Shout out to the spring rolls and that awesome sauce, for making me believe that good things can still happen.
Ordered the vegetable chow fun and vegetable fried rice, and DANG. So good!! My friend had fried prawns and seafood chow fun, and he really really liked those.
Props for the early delivery, and that epic grape dessert... I forgot the name..
Will definitely order from here again.Listed in: Broken Foot Takeout Challenge

Though the food isn't phenomenal, this place deserves 4 stars for the convenience, customer service and super fast delivery. I ordered online - which is a very easy, user-friendly system - got an immediate confirmation email saying it'd be delivered within 45-60 minutes. 5 minutes later I got a call from someone at the restaurant confirming that I didn't want rice with my order - which I thought was very considerate - and only 30 minutes later, the food was at my door, well-packaged and not leaking everywhere, was piping hot.
I ordered a small egg drop soup, vegetable chow mein, ginger chicken, and honey walnut prawns. All was good, but I didn't care for the ginger chicken that much. But that's more a matter of personal taste, I'm sure. I can say that the veggies in my chow mein were fresh and the portion sizes were substantial.
I'll definitely order from Yang Chow again when I need a quick Chinese take out fix. -

Let me start off by saying that I have had the food in the past and it's pretty good, so I am giving them 2 stars. If I was basing this on service they would only have one.
We put together an order for a couple of people in our office and called it in as they advertise "Free" delivery with minimum order. The catch... They don't tell you what a minimum order is. So somehow our $22.00 order turned into a 33.00 order. We asked what happened and they said it's a $4 delivery fee + taxes. When we asked what the minimum order was they wouldn't tell us so, we ended up cancelling our order. And calling another place that delivered that was pretty tasty. We have ordered from them in the past and their food was generally pretty tasty. I am thinking that perhaps they are under new ownership. I will never consider ordering from them again. -

Their food is SOO DELICIOUS when I go out of town-I CRAVE it!!! Honey Walnut prawns the BEST EVER!
I love their garlic noodles & prawns too!!!
Everytime I take a guest there- they end up texting me a week or 2 later that they went back with their family/friends lol
Decor is NOT the best BUT the food is!!! -
Review from Norma L.
Ever since my old coworker brought me here for dinner, I've become a fan. I've not had tried the option of delivery, but have eaten at the restaurant a few times, but mostly call in my order and pick up.
They are really accommodating when you order, and they are fast. The best part is their family dinners! Since my boyfriend is vegetarian and my Mom is not and LOVES sweet and sour chicken, we order the vegetarian family dinner and substitute one of the dishes for hers. Supposedly there is a $1.00 substitution but it's hit and miss sometimes. The bomb part! It's only $19.00 for two people, with enough food to feed 3.5, normal appetites. Yes you read that, $19.00, not $19.00 per person as some other restaurants put. So what do you get for $19.00, appetizer, soup, rice (white or brown), and two dishes. OK so Chinatown isn't' that far away, but they are not nearly as rude or pushy as the folks in Chinatown, and parking is much easier to get. If you are a fan of Than Long garlic noodle, they have a cheaper version... Crab?? not a bad price and you can pick your own live one! Sorry Crabs..
Living in La La land, Chinatown food down here just doesn't cut it! -

+1: They go the extra mile when it comes to delivery. Chinese Meals on wheels from all of Oakland to Emeryville to Berkeley.
-1: 45 minutes (sorry because of Yummy in San Leandro I expect 30 minutes or less)
+1: Good crispy, crunchy, perfect texture egg rolls with ground pork!
-1: Meat dishes do not have enough meat, and the meat has so much salt you would think The Morton Salt Umbrella Girl was dancing on the food.
+1: good shrimp fried rice
The food is just like this review, kinda ehhh---- bland.Listed in: Lunch Time!

After being unable to motivate ourselves to either cook or go out I leafed through the phone book and found Yang Chow which said they delivered to Montclair. "Free delivery with minimum order service".
- Wor Won Ton Soup (M) $5.65
- Pork Pot Stickers $4.75
- Chef's Special Beef & String Beans (hot spiced) $7.50
- Honey Walnut Glaze Shrimp $9.35
$27.25 + tax so ~$29.50 Total Order
Delivery guy (DG) comes. "That will be $33 something"
Me - "Huh? It should be $29 something"
DG - "Oh, $3.75 delivery charge."
Me - "Isn't it free with minimum purchase?"
DG - "Yes. Monclair minimum $55"
Me - "You're kidding!!"
DG - [Rolls eyes with sour look on face]
Me - "OK. Fine. Here's the $$"
- Soup is OK.
- Potstickers are passable.
- "Chef's Special" Beef & String Beans? Those were the nastiest overcooked limp-@ss string beans I've come across. They melted in my mouth like they'd been in the slow-cooker a couple days. I had to spit them out. On a positive note, the beef was tender, but there was no "hot spiced" either. That's the Chef's Special?!? I wondered what happens when it's not his specialty . . . oh wait, we're coming to that . . .
- Honey Walnut Prawns - "Honey, do you see any walnuts?" "I think that's one under that huge mound of mayonnaisey sauce!" "Oh yeah, I think you're right. Is that the only one?!?" Thick, goopy, mayonnaisey, bleh. I had to scrape that nastiness off before eating. My g/f orders this dish at every Chinese place we go to. I've never it served up quite like that before!!
Soup and Potstickers - 3 stars
Entrees - 1 star (that might be generous)
Overall - 2 stars. Why didn't I Yelp! for some place closer to our house?!?
If you're not within spitting distance, be sure to ask about delivery charges. Better yet, order from some place else. -

I only go for the food...well, I don't go there...my lazy ass gets their food delivered. Fast delivery (30-45 min), even in the later hours.
Talk about late night comfort food. It's non-greasy (at least not as much as the usual Grand Lake chinese joints), portions are generous, and the menu is quite the bloody bounty (yaaaaaaar!) of Chinese-esque cusine. I guess that may take away from it comfort-food-ness.
They even cater to the vegetarian crowd. Meatless everything...even meatless Roast Duck (WTF???!). You heard me. It's not bad. It mainly duck piece shaped tofu drenched in the sweet sauce they use for Hong Kong style roast duck. Very weird, very good.
Delivery dudes are nice guys, and always carry correct change!Listed in: My Neighborhood

Wanting to give this place in our new neighborhood a try, we went in for some take out. While waiting for the food, I wandered though the restaurant to use the bathroom and probably should have known to run at that point. A glimpse in the kitchen and it was a total wreck, with dirty stuff everywhere. The bathroom was rank and the door handle was super sticky. Yum!
But the real gross out was the food:
-- Chow Fun with Beef: Beef was gristly. Noodles tasted like soap.
-- Spicy garlic chicken: Deep fried chicken parts that came with a separate soup container full of sauce that tasted like ketchup. Oh yeah, and after a few bites I found a piece of STEEL FREAKING WOOL in the dish. (At least we know they wash the dishes occassionally.)
-- Hot and Sour Soup: neither hot nor sour.
All told, even the steamed rice was the only thing that didn't go in the garbage. This place was absolutely the bottom of the barrel. -

Oh yea, it's Oakland and I'm sure you hear a lot about how Oakland has no good Chinese food lol. Well this one is somewhat of an exception.
I order from this place often when I'm at the office closing on the weekends. Mainly from the Grub Hub website.
This place has Great portions. Good food. Decent price range and hot off the grill.
I like to mix it up a bit and order different plates each time i order from here. Ya know, to try different dishes and see how they taste...and boy do they!
My only beef is for some dishes when they deliver, it's in some Tupperware tubes; which kills the dish sometimes. But I'm not that picky. Least they provide you with utensils and shit.
check this place out if you haven't. It's worth a try. Even if you live in Oakland or not. -

ok so the ONLY reason this place gets 4 stars is that all of the delivery chinese food in this town is one step above garbage. I ordered the duck which was pretty good but dry. the meat dumplings were just steamed pot stickers- but still good.
ordered the lion head meat balls- they were just ok as I have had amazing ones but I thought I would try.
all in all it was good not amazing but good -
Review from Mac C.
East Bay, CA
I always test a Chinese restaurant's kitchen by ordering a rice plate of tofu beef. If they can't do a simple, down-home dish like that correctly, then it's unlikely the kitchen is serious and/or authentic. Yang Chow failed big time.
Yang Chow's tofu dishes, in general, leave a lot to be desired. (And I LOVE tofu.) So I've given up ordering ANY tofu dish from Yang Chow.
You can get better Spicy Pork Tofu (i.e., MaPo style) from a package.
And forget about the Shrimp Egg Rolls. . .ewwww.
Yang Chow does, however, have acceptable Fried Chicken Wings, Black Bean Chow Fun, HK style Tomato Beef Chow Mein, and the YC Fried Rice.
Their Hot & Sour soup is never consistent and you never know how it's going to taste.
Shamefully, they use store-bought chopped garlic in a jar which does nothing for an "authentic flavor" --esp. in their "special" garlic noodles or any other garlic-centric dish.
Nonetheless, we always figured the few dishes they did well were reliable and OK for a mid-week meal. Or so we thought.
We ordered take-out last week while shopping in the area with the following results:
Tomato Beef Chow Mein was greasy -- I'm talking glistening puddles ;
Large Fried Chicken Wings (only 12 wings when menu says14)
MuShu Vegetables: no MuShu flavor and all the veggies were so mushy it was more like soup. And there were almost NO wood ears (very important MuShu ingredient)
Black Bean Chow Fun tasted burned and the "Fun" (noodles) was all in pieces (like leftover remnants) rather than "slices" of Fun noodles.
When we called to tell them about the problems, I had to repeat 3 times why I was calling because I was passed from one person to another and then finally to a man whom I guess was the manager. I told him the food we had was not good -- especially the soupy, flavorless, inedible mushu veggies (which my husband spit out after 2 bites) -- and that we had been shorted on the chicken. I asked if perhaps they had changed chefs.
Mr. Manager insisted they only use fresh veggies and that this is ALWAYS how the MuShu Veggies are and that it is "the same recipe for 30 years".
Seriously? We've ordered them before so we know how they're supposed to taste. Whoever cooked this batch did not use his "30-year old recipe". He declined my offer to bring back the MuShu to show him. And then he insisted that I was wrong, etc.
We did not ask for anything from him other than to report the sub-par quality we experienced. Basically, he took the attitude that I was lying and hung up.
BTW, Yang Chow recently raised their prices an average of 9% on all menu items. It appears Yang Chow, while raising prices, has also lowered their standards and integrity.
Final Note: Warning: If you ask for the slightest deviation from their menu, make sure there is not a charge for it because they don't tell you up front. We didn't know until we got the bill.
P.S. Generally, I give more weight to reviews of, for example, a Mexican place if the review is written by a Latino person and so on for an Italian place, etc. I am Chinese. This place is not up to par for a good Chinese restaurant. And it's like they never clean the place. . . -

Bad -- so bad.
ordered:
veggie potstickers - greasy, not crisp on the outside like they should be, probably the best part of dinner
special steamed broccoli w/garlic sauce: looked/tasted more blanched than steamed, and there was no sauce, just bits of jarred (not fresh) garlic on top
vegetarian chicken w/mushrooms: really bad texture on the fake meat, inedible for me, mushrooms sliced thin and sauteed in strange brown sauce, also included more blanched broccoli and confusing eggplant (couldn't figure out how that was cooked)
small steamed rice: undercooked
Total came to about $24 and we ended up getting round table pizza delivered after we got home. Maybe the meaty stuff is better, but as a vegetarian, i'm staying away. -

I found out that this place delivers to Emeryville so I was all about it. I was home sick from work, didn't feel like cooking, didn't feel like driving. Perfect.
The food was mediocre, really... but the portions were huge and the price right. I was impressed that the delivery driver's car apparently died, so they showed up in a taxi, probably lost money on a $30 order since it was a 10 mile round trip for them.
It would be 2.5 stars but since they deliver, I'll go 3.5 (4)... why not? -

We were completely surprised by the huge food portions. Lots of food. So much food. You could feed a third-world country with the amount of food that we received.
But they were definitely making up for quality with quantity. I don't like my food overly salty, but the Mongolian beef dish was bland and not spicy, the eggplant dish was bland, and the pot stickers were super doughy.
The leftovers were finally infused with some flavor after a couple of days in the fridge, but you don't order take-out for how it'll taste in a few days. -

I have used Yang Chow on and off for years; to their credit, they seem to deliver anywhere you ask them to.
So I was horrified when I phoned this afternoon and told them our order last night was literally rancid. The chicken in both dishes were inedible ($25 bucks plus a $5 tip down the drain). Even more disturbing is how little it seemed to concern them that a longtime customer would phone with such a sad tale.
A partial refund would have been nice. An APOLOGY would have been even nicer. Neither were offered. So this longtime customer is now a former customer. -
