Good crowd, Parking is doable. Dart boards in the back.
Totally crowded, but for good reason. Place has a good vibe!
Yancy's... What can I POSSIBLY say about this place? I LOVE IT HERE.
It is indeed a sports bar, but to me, it's so much more. This is my all-time favorite bar right now and I think it will be for a while. I am only out there a few times every couple months, but whenever I am there, I have some of the best nights ever.
Something about it just makes you feel so comfortable. I guess it's because you are allowed to bring food here.. lol
Only down side is that they are CASH ONLY. Kind of sucks, but I guess it's not so bad for me since Wells Fargo is across the street. Reason for my 4 instead of 5 stars.
The bartenders and servers are awesome. I've had a secret crush on Doug ;P lol jk
Come here with the right crowd and you are guaranteed a great time.
i LOVE how they have 151, Hypnotq & Redbull! Not many places have all 3 of these.
Yancy's is neither a saloon or a great bar.
It is however huge and they allow you to bring in food from the outside and they have plenty of staff.
However, it is huge and they allow you to bring in food from the outside and they have plenty of staff to have to attend to the psuedo-med-jocks and assholes who clog this place on a regular basis.
my other local bar. alan the bartender is awesome. great sports bar! good place for larger groups. can bring food in (like pizza or mex food from next door). cash only, but there are 4 banks a half block on either side.
dart boards, big screen tv's, popcorn, chips & salsa, booze, loud!
the occasional marina-type douchebag finds his way in, but is easily spotted. also, some guys try to pick you up by pretending to be doctors at UCSF. but us smart girls figure that out quickly too.
Remember the Brat Pack movie, St. Elmo's Fire?
Yancy's is the kind of place you'd find their group at. Relaxed vibe - a mix of locals and UCSF'ers. Roomy, lots of wood fixtures, tables and chairs, a long bar, and dart boards in the back.
It's a good place to kick back and enjoy the entertainment - either on screen or around you.
Everytime I go here it is either sparsely crowded (any weeknight), or very crowded (any weekend night), no in-between. Besides barstools, there are plenty of chairs, tables, benches and even a sofa. It's a fun place since it's a mixture of divy bar and sports bar, with a youngish Gen-X and Gen-Y crowd from nearby SFSU, USF and probably some of CCSF. And due to the vicinity to UCSF, there seem to be more grad students than undergrads? And you'll even hear people - who would never karaoke - sing along at times to whatever happens to be playing on the jukebox. Either way, it's a bar for fun drinking, not drunk drinking.
For this Wednesday at least, happy hour had $1-off beers on tap (e.g., $5 for a pint of Bass Ale) and $3 well drinks. It was a somewhat good evening since the Giants won, the A's won, but the MLS All-Stars lost to the EPL's Everton in penalties - but it was due to the top-notch play of US soccer Men's National Team's starting goalkeeper Tim Howard (go Timmay!).
I'd never have walked in had it not been sponsored by my company for happy hour, because I'm just not a dive bar kind of girl.
But this place was kind of surprising; they have a cute little nook in the back where you can sit and play darts - 3 dart boards, pick up the darts from the bar. Also, the bartenders are surprisingly attentive compared to other dive bars I've been to.
For a dive bar, it really isn't so bad, I just wish the area by the bar was more spacious so I wouldn't have to fight to get a beer.
My favorite neighborhood bar. Great place to meet up with friends for a drink and to catch a game. There are tv's plastered on every wall, so you can get your fix of basketball, baseball, football, golf and etc...
Lots of wooden tables and chairs scattered about, one couch in the middle of the room and a long bar. Usually on a busy night a waitress will come around your table to get your order. If not order at the bar. You can entertain yourself on the old school video games, three dart boards and or ask for some die.
They only take cash, but there are three banks and plenty of atm machines on the same block.
They don't have a huge selection of beers on tap, but they have my staple, Guinness, so I'm usually satisfied. They don't serve food but do have pretzels and popcorn available. You can bring outside food in and you will never go hungry with the selection of restaurants on 9th Ave.
A frequent stop for UCSF'ers. I've seen people studying for their surgery rotation with a beer in hand. Nice! You can be my surgeon!
Lots of TVs to watch while you drink your drink. Free refills on diet coke if you're not drinking. A good place to meet up with friends before deciding on a restaurant to go to in this neighborhood. Very friendly and bright for a bar.
I've come on the weekends too and it get's busy with SFSU students coming to have a good time.
I guess the first question I have is, after how many gin & tonics are you no longer qualified to write a review of a bar? Arguably, after enough of them, any bar is good.
But that's not the point. I met up at Yancy's with a huge group of friends on Friday night. A group was there, and others came and joined. My $5 g&t's kept me happy, and of course being with such a big group was great too. The most impressive part was perhaps how we were able to get two tables near each other so that everyone was actually TOGETHER! The place is well-lit (important for drinking games) and the staff is super friendly. It's a great place to chill and the music isn't overbearingly loud.
So yeah, major props to Yancy's and for sure I'd go back!
I give this place 5 stars based on the memories that I have had here with my friends. If you're not into sports and don't appreciate all the HD TVs they have, then you can play darts or dice. But really, there are a lot of TVs there. The bar staff are extremely friendly and efficient. They have a pretty good selection on their digital jukebox. Drinks are well made and stiff...no watered down crap here! They have a nice selection and really yummy pear cider! My friend ordered that and offered me a taste but I practically finished it off for her. The Mad Hatter will get you drunk quick, and the kamikaze had a good ratio. The girl who works here always brings us popcorn without us bothering to ask, but if you want actual food then you can order a pizza from Pasquale's at the end of the block! They also have quite a few different kind of tables for however many people you're with.
I'm not too crazy about the parking situation, but it's better on weekdays. The crowd is really friendly, no a--holes that I've come across so far. It's got a neighborhood feel to it all and everyone is just out to have a good time. I recommend this place if you're looking for a chill place to hang out with friends and catch up over decently priced drinks!
Oh Yancy's, how kind you are. The stairs leading to each section of your bar are petite and shallow, allowing my drunk ass to stumble gracefully through the far-more-sober crowd. After just a Long Island Iced Tea and half a Cranberry Vodka, I began to feel warm with joy and happily dizzy. Your dim lighting and comfy couches encouraged my desire to be inappropriate and promiscuous, which I fought to restrain in the company of the proper-yet-super-sexy Jason C.
But thanks to my attention span of a 5-year-old, the urge passed, and I was soon distracted by the large, flashing TV monitors with the pretty, bright, moving pictures.
Not only do your drinks taste scrumptious, but they also make for a lovely improv perfume, as I discovered hours after I drunkenly spilled my beverage on my skirt.
I've been here a handful of times. Its a nice chill spot for a neighborhood bar. Darts, juke box, lots of tables & chairs. The crowd is so-so for me, but usually when i stop in a bar, its not for the crowd. There was a decent amount of people here for a Wednesday night.
I give Yancy's 3 stars for being a cool neighborhood bar with a semi-decent crowd and plenty of seating. Im kicking up an extra star for the owner, Alan - friendly and incredibly nice. He talks me up a bit and will deny any more drinks trying to be passed my way if i look like ive had a few too many.
Having been born & raised in the Sunset, i often find myself here, even when i dont want to be. And although Yancy's was never my usual spot, it has recently become my place to unwind after a long hard day. All the bartenders are super friendly you cant help but want to sit and chat and throw back a couple. And when i dominate the jukebox, the music is fantastic. I tried my hand at darts, but being inebriated, did not help my game at all. I may return to brush up. Very fun night, but im paying for it this morning. (im too old for this shite)
It's dark. It's smelly. It's sticky.
It's a total dive.
With some snakebite and some pretzels, I always end up surviving the night.
This is the bar of bars!
Where do I even start... The location is great, right in the heart of the 9th and Irving scene with next to tons of restaurants which works well because Yancy's doesn't server meal food, but they let you bring in whatever you want. If you ask nice they some times have free chips and salsa, pretzels or popcorn.
SPORTS! This is a fantastic place to be to catch the game or many games at once. They have more big flat screens in this place than anywhere i know of in the city. Plus they have a big jumbo-tron of their own which always has the biggest game on.
Drinks flow like Niagara here, the barkeeps are quick and talented and they always have enough cute waitresses running around to get you your next cold one.
It's really about time I reviewed this place. I've been going here for years, off and on. It's one of those bars that has great potential, but falls short. It's large by S.F. standards, but it could really use a good remodel. The service over the years has been OK. It's gone from bad to good at times. I'm not too picky about service at a bar, but, I have to say it like it is. The bar has a big screen for sports watching, but the angles and seat choices are limited. (not as good as Kezar by a long shot). The beer choice is decent, not great. Several taps. They have open windows at the front if you like to people watch, which is nice. I guess the most time I spent here was waiting for the now-deceased P.J.s Oyster bed (R.I.P PJ's)
Yay for Yancy's.
Yay for never having to worry about finding a table for our big group.
Yay for never having to worry about the bill at the end because we pay each round up front.
Yay for never paying more than $5 for a draft beer.
Yay for having TVs at every angle of the bar.
Yay for a dart room.
Yay for Pacman!
Yay for not having to circle for parking! Bigger yay for a responsible DD!
I had been playing "text" tag with this guy I didn't really want to go out with but agreed to anyway because 1. I had nothing better to do on a wednesday night 2. Needed to throw a few back since I had an intense job interview that morning. So we finally caught up with each other and decided to meet at Yancy's. I had never been there, but he had because it is a "local" bar for him.
I show up, and he is sitting at the bar watching the Giants game. The second I sit down, the Giants' opponent scores a home run in overtime and the Giants lose the game. Since this guy is wearing a Giants hat, I thought maybe he would think I was bad luck and would declare the date over. In any case, he didn't and asked me if I wanted a drink. Sure, I said. Too bad the bartender was the least attentive bartender EVER. It probably took ten mins before I was able to order that first beer. And anyone on a first date knows, ten mins without a drink to sip on between awkward pauses in conversation is about as comfortable as a cheap thong.
Aside from the shitty service, the bar had a nice chill ambiance so I might go back in hopes there is a different bartender next time. With or without that same guy is a different story....
Great place.
Lots of TV's for sports, good draft selection, they let you bring in grub from the awesome restaurants on Irving, and have plenty of space to hang out.
Clean place and quick service. What more could you ask for to go watch a big game, or just hang out?
1/2 block walk off the N.
Enjoy!
frequent spot me and the wife visit.. beers are good and cheap, they got darts, video boobie games, popcorn, music and sports on all tubes..
place to shoot the sh*t wit your boys or kick it wit ur significant other no frill just good spot to chill, sfsu students all over the place if not across the street at tart to tart.
all times i been here it has been busy not elbow to elbow but close
only twice it has been relatively dead and relatively dead at this spot is means places to sit down. haha
food none popcorn haha
alcohol **** they make almost everything
ambiance **** sports barish without the pool tables, saloonish looking, music and people are loud
price $ regular bar not really pricey..
All I can say about this place is...
What you see is what you get.
It's probably one of the only places in the avenues that has darts.
Great sports bar. Lots of room and places to sit. They have lots of TVs as well (all showing sports of course). They even have a separate cornered off area for darts. But I still think darts and alcohol are not very good mixes. But that's beyond the scope of this review. I think Yancy's only accept cash, so fill your wallets in advance (so you can empty it). The drinks were typically priced for SF bars.
Parking (in that area in general) is a pain before 10pm. But afterwards, the streets open up for your parking pleasure.
my favorite thing to do in life is belittle my friend Curtis at everything. The easiest is the way he talks since it sounds like he always has marbles in his mouth. You can also make fun of ...well a whole lot of things but I'll spare you. But when Curtis is in that Dart lane,he is the King ,the Lord,The Savior. I write this to bow to my friend Curtis' dart superiority, cherish this buddy because everything else can be capped on.
With that said,Yancys.Yancys is not bad.ample space. pretty good drink prices.nice waitresses .
SOMEBODY NEEDS TO TURN THE FUCKING INCUBUS AND SHIT OFF THE JUKEBOX. Also I get it Usf/sfsu kids ,you hang out at Yancys.Crystal Clear. Can you not always wear your sorority sweatshirts and crap all the time ?also get out of my way.thanks
Friendly neighborhood bar that I would frequent a lot when I lived in the area. Great for sports watching (especially if the Warriors ever get good again) and for the casual, evening drink. The only downside is that they don't take credit cards. Big strike against the place.
i went here after dinner last week for a couple drinks and it was the first time i've been to yancy's in YEARS. I used to come here every week when I was younger (19-20 to be exact...they didn't card on weeknights!)...so much so that I've called it "yancy's wednesdays". Lots of good times at this bar. Being back in here was like a trip down memory lane, except there are a ton of flat screen tvs all over the place now. The drinks were good, they still served popcorn (though I didn't eat any), there are still a lot of pretty plants and the women's bathroom is still painted bright red.
Someone that night had really good taste in music and just kept getting it right on the jukebox...i mean wow from smashing pumpkins to the humpty dance...I really wanted to find out who that person was and thank him/her personally for making my yancy's night even better!
This is the perfect "i want to drink, but have a chill night" spot
i.e. no need for heels ladies, come as casual as you want! They didn't card at the door.
AND omg no line for the girls bathroom! AMAZING!
Ohh Yancy's... Where do I begin.
I've been to this bar more than a dozen times and it's always seems to be a different experience. It's not a bad bar by any means I just don't think it's my "scene". The clientele are a bit younger (I'm getting old) and it seems like more of a college bar than what I'm looking for in my drinking establishment of choice.
They do have a lot of HDTVs and would be a great place to watch the game. It's normally a bit crowded for my taste though.
Meh.. I'd meet you there is you really wanted to go but I'm not going to suggest it.
Strong drinks and darts! What more could you want?
Yancy's is my type of place. It's laid back, reasonably priced and far from stuffy. It's a nice clean place with an easy going crowd and a fantastic location. I went on a Tuesday at about 7 and by 10pm the placed was packed so I don't know how crowded it get's on the weekends. Yancy's has a cool vibe; it's dark and plays some great classic rock. What's even better is that Pasquale's Pizza is right on the corner; we grabbed a few pizza's and enjoyed our evening. Check it out if your looking for a casual night and a cold beer. I really enjoyed myself.
I go here because sometimes I want to get blitzed, watch every dam** sports event that is happenin' on the planet (at the same time), and have room to stretch, view and expound with friends upon topics Great and Small (but mostly Great)
The place to go on a casual afternoon, for happy hour, during any sports season, or for any other time when you'd like to detour off your gal-pal's Mobius Loop of Fun/Hell into Union Square-Marina District-Fondue Night w/ the girlz.
See you there. I'll be the one ordering drinks for the house.
I went to Yancy's last weekend and I must say I was throughly impressed. Then again i'm not entirely sure what I expected to begin with, in any case I had a great time.
I was loving the atmosphere that Yancy's creates, seriously everyone was sitting down and just hanging out. It truly is a place for hanging out, definitely not a place for dancing, but what do you expect in the sunset district?
The prices were extremely fair, I actually pulled out $40 when i got two beers a vodka cranberry, and a vodka tonic. Truth is, they only charged me a little over $20. Not bad right? yeah i thought so too.
If you ever feel like just hanging out and not going all the way downtown to "pop bottles" yancy's is perfect for you.
I APPROVE!
Yancy's is definitely a fine watering hole that has all the proper amenities one could ask for: a multitude of TVs, darts, ancient video games, good but not great selection of draft beers, and, most importantly, a very welcoming environment. Yancy's is the perfect place to hang out at and enjoy quality conversation with old or new friends.
March on, Yancy's!
It's a solid sports/dive bar..especially for being in the inner sunset. Lots of tables to actually *gasp* sit at with room for friends, dart boards, and parking was a breeze (on a sunday night). Oh and for all of those USF/ State freshman/sophomores..they don't seem to card. Actually the staff will probably see this review and start carding...suckas!..I don't want you kiddies to start invading this bar. Minus one star for not letting us start a tab on our table, and for the cocktail server not checking back on us to see if we wanted more drinks (we had to go find her)
My kind of dive.
Not the first option, but I'd hit it up anytime
Ample seating, nearby food choices
Sports on the screens
Street parking isn't too difficult
No douchebag encounters as of yet
Chill
This place is HUGE, with a long bar that it's easy to order from. Beer is the drink of choice here, and casual is the dress code. A very high guy-gal ratio, which you might gather from the decor.
There's nothing spectacular to be found here, and I would only call it travel-worthy if you happen to have a med-student fetish. They are on steady supply at Yancy's.
AND, I will never forget the incident in the bathroom with the red-painted walls. Shhhhh.
This has got to be one of the mellowest, most quiet bars I have ever set foot in. We came here about half way through the Superbowl (and yes it was packed)...the SUPERBOWL... and you could probably have heard a pin drop. I guess that's fine and dandy but I really enjoy noise at bars. Not too much noise but just enough to make me feel like I'm actually out and not alone in my apartment.
The good things about this bar are plenty. The bartender was really cool. My friends talked him up; he was telling us all about his upcoming trip to Vegas and was playing cards with us. You can bring in as much food as you like and completely sprawl out. They serve buttery, heart corroding popcorn which is awesome while consuming large amounts of alcohol.
The only notable bad thing was the margarita they made me. EWWWW...but that's more my fault for ordering tequila at this kind of bar.
Everyone may not know my name, but I run into more random friends than I would expect here. Good music, plenty of space, lots of tvs, close to home. Only darts, sparing on the free popcorn, bartenders not always on the ball for drink orders. All in all, best bar in inner sunset though.
For my first ever yelp review, I ended up writing about a bar....I'm not quite sure what that says about me. Or rather, maybe I do but I just choose to think otherwise...
The crowd is generally young, but very diverse...which reminds me ever so fondly of college. In fact, it's probably the 2nd best thing about this place...recent college grads, UCSF students...reminds me of 4 years ago! There are dart boards, bar games and old school arcade machines scattered amongst the dozen or so TVs on the walls...which probably make up the 3rd best things.
All in all, a fun and chill place to be...and a place I'll probably end up at sometime in the near future. Oh, and the best thing about this place? Alkie and FREE POPCORN. Just remember to bring cash...
to buy me a round...
Ms. Pacman AND beer? DAMN
No, I would not like to hear about Fergie's humps, or the Red Hot Chili Peppers singing about the same thing on every album since they started sucking (1995, I think). I came to watch a football game; I'd like to hear it too. So would those other people asking you to turn up the sound. The bar is not that crowded, so no need to snap when I ask you politely. And when the majority of bar patrons are gathered around the big screen TV to watch the same game, doesn't it make sense to turn down Incubus, or Creed, or the Grease soundtrack, or whatever else you're playing in full rotation?
20 minutes later someone finally came by to turn up the sound. Lo and behold, the music went up too. WAY up. Oh please, curly dark haired bartender, play your games, but not with paying customers.
Bottom line: watch the game elsewhere.
