I am a huge fan of sushi. It is hard to find good sushi in a city like El Paso, or at least that is what I thought before I went to Yamato.Yamato is a small Japanese restaurant. You walk in and you immediately feel like this could be very promising. There is a sushi bar that you can sit at to get your sushi, and of course tables. The hardest thing for me when trying to decide on what to eat, is what it will look like. Yamato takes care of this worry by providing pictures for everything they serve. Whether it is sushi or the traditional Japanese food.

One of the neatest things about Yamato is their "combos." These usually include a sushi roll, rice, and another dish of variation depending on the combo itself. There are 2 1/2 pages of combos and all of them are affordably priced. I picked a combo with an eel and a salmon roll that also came with a huge bowl of yummy white rice. Most rice is dry and loses its stickiness, not so with Yamato. Their sushi was flavorful and had a nice complexity of flavors. Their fish was fresh (for it almost being closing time).

The service was great. Due to Yamato being a small restaurant, they only needed 2 or 3 servers, but the servers stopped by to refill our drinks before they were out. She came by to make sure we were okay in between dishes and more often that I would have expected.

All in all, Yamato is my new favorite place for sushi in town. Definitely worth trying.

The appetizers at Yamato are a little expensive, even compared to some high class Japanese restaurants I have been to out of town, so I haven't tried any of them.  Yamato has excellent rice dishes, however, and great combination options that are relatively cheap, and that's what keeps my girlfriend and I going.

Their rolls are a great option when you're craving sushi and their nigiri is some of the best on the West side of town, since they are never fatty or fishy.  This is still some mediocre sushi, but the price makes it work.

We are constantly trying different sushi restaurants in El Paso and maintain that the best option is Makoto on Joe Battle.  If you want real sushi in El Paso, it's still the best you're going to get.
