My husband and I stayed at the Yachtsman for two nights after our wedding for a mini-honeymoon and we were absolutely delighted with this place.

Our stay here was truly fantastic. I've seen on other sites that some people have been deterred by the motel facade of the Yachtsman, but this is definitely an example of how you can't judge a place by it's exterior (which, incidentally, is not run-down at all). The Yachtsman is a former motel that has been converted into a luxury B&B. The rooms are exceptionally tastefully decorated - crisp white bed linens, calming painted walls and lovely mahogany framed prints of sailing photos and maps. There was a down comforter atop our comfortable king size bed, and a lovely bathroom with good lighting and mirrors. Not a drop of the frilly, Victorian-ish decor that you see in many B&Bs.

We had a sliding doors that led out to a porch with two chairs and little lawn right on the Kennebunk river. It was so beautiful and relaxing to sit out there and watch the boats go by. We asked the front desk about a charter boat we saw pass by, and were told that it was Schooner Eleanor, a boat built and operated by a guy just up the river. She had the contact info on hand and gave it to us right then (sadly, the schooner was booked for the weekend).

At check in, we were told that bikes and canoes were available to us to borrow, free of charge, so we took a canoe down the river and back. It was lovely. (We also passed George H.W. Bush's secret service boat that had been moored out in front of our hotel - kind of funny).

Breakfast here was excellent and of high quality - cereals, breads and fruit with coffee, tea and juice. Very tasty and it was nice to sit out on the porch and read the paper while overlooking the water.

It's a quick walk to town from here (maybe 5 minutes) and you're also right on Ocean Drive so you can walk, drive or bike in the other direction to check out the gorgeous Atlantic views. Also, parking is available directly in front of your room - a charming play on the establishment's motel roots.

Overall, we had a wonderful stay here and are already planning to go back for our one-year anniversary. A great place to go if you're averse to nosy B&B hosts and want a laid back place to stay with classic, beautiful furnishings and service when you want it. 5 stars!

We stopped at the Yachtsman for one night on a trip through New England and really loved the place.  The decor is updated with bead-board on the walls and a nautical theme throughout.  The woman at the front desk was extremely welcoming and helpful.  The hotel is a revamped and updated motel and I thought captured the mood of the riverfront very well.

They had canoes to use for free so we paddled out and  my husband caught two fish within 10 minutes - pretty good sized fish with a great fight.  There were snacks in the afternoon and a breakfast in the morning that was fine.  We could grab our breakfast and bring it back to the room while we sat on our patio looking out over the river.  We had also walked to town in the evening to have dinner and it was a nice walk there and back.

I would highly recommend the Yachtsman as fun alternative to your usual Bed & Breakfasts - and I love B&B's so that is a huge compliment!
