Came here for a Birthday Dinner with a large group (~20). We started with a selection of fresh oysters, and followed with an array of starters to share. My favorites were the Shrimp Tempura Spring Rolls and Housemade Dungeness Crab Cakes. Both were beautifully presented. A vegetarian friend ordered the housemade Gnocchi, which had the most amazing smell. For entree, I had the Cioppino. The seafood was very fresh, and the seasoning had just the right amount of spice.
Service was very good. All our entrees came at the same time (which is a big deal for this many people), someone is running a tight ship in the kitchen.
Overall, great food, nice service, and a very good choice for this price range. -

This is really a 3.5 star review
I would have never thought to come to this place if it weren't for the fact that my friend lived across the street and we were too lazy to walk any further. That being said, it is quite good for seafood. Unfortunately I've been told it is closing but before it does, you should check it out. Think that is one of the reasons why you'll see a smaller crowd there.
We came during happy hour so everything was pretty cheap (wine was $4 and actually decent). They were also super nice to us. They did take a while to come take our order etc but were really nice about it
Recommend the following
-Oysters
-Fish tacos
-Dungeness house made crab cake - this was really good and cheap on the happy hour menu
-House made potato gnocchi
-Seafood fettuccini - it is only prawns and mussels so not a fish overload. Was rich and creamy given lobster sauce base but delicious -

Definitely pass on this place especially with all the other great options on Polk Street. Everything is overpriced and the food is average at best. The fried calamari was rubbery and the shrimp cocktail had barely any cocktail sauce - instead, they filled the glass with lettuce.
Most of all, the service was poor - the place was empty, yet the bartender seemed like she didn't want to be bothered. -

Always take an empty restaurant as a sign. I live nearby and was curious about Yabbies. They have oysters on ice that you can see from the window outside, which are tantalizing, but it never seemed busy so that kept me away. I finally decided to go wtih a 50% off Scoutmob deal. We had the ahi tune poke, cioppino, and seafood pasta. The food was okay...bit salty but decent. The wine was meh. The decor could use a facelift (stained chairs with the 90s print need to go). I might come here again if the food was half the price, but there are cheaper places that are better.

Meh. I've had better experiences really sums up the meal we had at Yabbies.
The restaurant was never more than a quarter full during the evening, but one person's beer didn't show up for a good 10 - 15 min after everyone else received theirs, and 2 people's waters were empty for half the meal.
The oysters were pretty good, but they are $1.50 not $1 like it says on yelp.
The calamari was limp and not particularly warm.
The shrimp in my dish had a metallic taste.
We were so unimpressed we decided to go some place else for dessert.
The meal was around $50 per person and we had an issue with the bill that the waitress wasn't able to fix because the manager wasn't around.
I'll take bad service and good food, or the other way around, but not both.
I had been planning to return with a group of friends later this week, but after this meal we are going somewhere else. -

Yabbies was tasty. My friends ordered oysters which I'm not a huge fan of, but had them anyways. My main dish however was spot on. The linguine and seafood dish came with a creamy sauce.
We decided to get a bottle of sav blanc for the table, it paired well with all of our meals. A great local spot on Polk that I'd recommend right along with Pesce. -
Review from Peter C.
Having lived right off of Polk for three years, Yabbies was definitely on my short list of great, super walkable restaurants. I've been a few times now and always enjoy it. Obviously you have to order seafood, so it that's not your thing then go somewhere else. The salmon is delicious and at $18 a pretty good deal in my book. The fettuccini is great too and the overall experience is always pleasant. Great spot to bring family or friends looking for a relaxing dinner.
Also obvious: Polk Street rocks. Eat dinner here so you can hit the slew of Polk bars afterward!! -
Review from Jeremy G.
Yabbie's is most certainly a classier place than I might ever choose to patron. My friend was in town and swore by the recommendation of his concierge about this place. He sadly did not realize that power of my Yelp skillz. In this case, however, I was glad he did not. What a delicious meal I had here. Gnocchi that were literally clouds of potato in a sea of pesto sauce with 6 huge grilled shrimp. Can you ask for better?
Well, they could have given us salt and pepper with our bread, especially when they gave us a sauce container of olive oil. Other than that, the service and attention to detail was on point. -

I love the oysters here! During my trip there, they had a special "Around the World Oysters" where you had an order of 5 different oysters you could try. I guess it was only temporary because the next time I went back, the waiter stated it was no longer being offered. They also have an organic wine which is absolutely delicious! I keep forgetting the name however they have a picture of a sunflower on the label. I am determined to ask and remember the name the next time I go.
The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice. Dim but enough lighting so you aren't squinting at the menu. Be sure to make a reservation beforehand as it tends to get crowded on the weekends.
Will definitely be back for the oysters. -

I've been here twice and waited until the second time to post this review. I went here a couple of weeks ago and upon sitting down the waitress informs us that they are out of oysters, tuna (for the tuna tartare), scallops, and another dish. This is a coastal kitchen and seafood restaurant and they were out of half the dishes. The food was average at best, I seriously make better stuff at home, and the service was extremely slow. We had to ask them to bring out bill twice because we didn't want to sit there all night. On the first visit the oysters were pretty fresh. I miiiight return for they're happy hour, but the ambiance of the place doesn't make up average (at best) food and bad service.
Pesce a couple of doors down is a much better option. -
Review from Alice S.
Yabbies Costal Kitchen has one of the best Sunday brunches around. I haven't found a brunch spot that has come close to the delicious flavors of their menu. Seven days a week for dinner Yabbies serves up tasty fresh seafood such as sesame crusted ahi tuna and oysters from Bodega Bay but on Sundays from 10:30am until 2:30pm, Yabbies transforms into a magical brunch spot.
The brunch menu is diverse and features lunch type items in addition to traditional breakfast. Popular items are the French Toast, Breakfast Sandwich with pancetta, fresh Crab Cake Benedict, Grilled Asparagus Salad and the Classic Shrimp Louie. But by far the stand out choice is the Mushroom Scramble Frittata. I haven't stopped thinking about this frittata since I had it. The perfect balance of goat cheese and delicately sliced mushrooms with a drizzle of truffle oil is enough to make me crazy in anticipation of Sunday mornings.
Yabbies is a charming little restaurant in Russian Hill on Polk Street. It's busy for brunch on Sundays so be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes for a table at peak hours. Yabbies also offers a few outside tables for those few days when it's warm enough in the city to eat al fresco. Next time you need a brunch spot on Sunday head over to Yabbies for the most delicious frittata ever! -

More of 3.8 stars.
There are 2 bar areas, one facing the wines and the other oyster section. They don't have a lot of wines so you are really facing a simple wall. The oyster seating is also just facing the back of the guy who's cracking the oysters open.
Saturday night I came by was a somewhat busy evening. The place was a bit loud with the walls not very absorbing the sound.
The 2 "tours" of oysters ($10 each for 4) was $1 more than what was mentioned on the website but they were actually of quite good quality albeit a bit chilled. They were also properly cracked and ready to slurp without an oyster fork. Cioppino's broth was really the highlight, slightly undercurrent spicy and flavorful, the single crab claw, a mussel, a bunch of shrimps and a couple clams were okay.
The tiramisu was a bit unusual because the cocoa topping powder was light and sweeter than I expected but was delicious, soft, moist and gentle to the taste.
They don't have a lot of wines to choose from but the prices were fairly good. Corkage fee is $20 (check) so it might not worth to bring your own bottle, though you should check out the wine merchant 2 doors north (William Cross) as they open until 10pm on Saturdays and definitely carry a great selection.
Service was good as there were really only 3 people serving the whole place. Food was served rather quickly once the order was in.
There is one thing that bothered me a bit. I was sitting at the edge of the bar and it might be a bit tight space to the other tables as most people who passed behind me had brushed up my jacket. It was a busy corner too.
Overall, the food was good but on the pricier side. But hey, they have happy hours everyday that I would love to come by and check it out! -

In two words: don't go. I have to say that my meal last night was one of the most disappointing I have had at a restaurant in years. My husband felt the same. To describe his meal: He ordered fish and chips. He asked what the fish was -the server said "cod". His plate comes. On it is 4 sad little pieces of fried lumps. The lumps turned out to be salmon and shrimp. No Cod at all. It was like they took the leftovers and deep fried them. Truly bad. On the side was a sorry excuse for French Fries.
Something has gone terribly wrong at Yabbies. -

Best Happy Hour. Is a shame that more people do not take advantage of this special. They do not advertise it, I guess it is too good of a deal.
Everything is good on the happy hour special, I love the mussels in curry.

So I am becoming a San Francisco resident, against all my better judgement. How do I know this? Because I was able to get to this restaurant without relying on the NAV system in my car! Oy vey!
Now for the review: I came here last night with some friends for the kick-off to this "2010 Dungeness Crab Season!" Yay! I was so excited for this opportunity that I barely ate all day. I got to the restaurant and we ordered two platters of oysters on the half shell. The oysters were so fresh they tasted of the ocean...a little sweet, a little salty, very gritty! Some of my best childhood memories are just like this. We also received an "on-the-house" appetizer of crab cakes. Please don't talk to a Marylander about crab cakes...that is all. Let's just leave it at that
Next, the main event: I ordered the caesar salad and the whole roasted Dungeness crab. What's with no anchovies in the caesar? Actually, most restaurants serve it that way. But, despite the lack of fishy, salty, goodness, the salad was very good. Very tangy vinaigrette salad dressing, and large shavings of parmigiano reggiano. And the crab? I wish I could say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, but alas... the crab was not very meaty, and the price? Thirty-eight dollars! I felt like I was going through the motions.
I do give this place four stars because the waiters are hot and very charming. Not only that, they are also very attentive to their patrons; my water glass was never empty. I do believe that the food is really good, I probably should've ordered differently. And the dessert, how could I forget that? One of the best slices of pumpkin cheesecake I have had in a long time. Creamy, spicy, delicious.
Better than a three star restaurant, and I look forward to seeing what else they have to offer. -

I went here for my sisters b-day. Reservations at 7, got there at 7:05, didn't find parking till 7:45. It was Friday night. Just having to go through that killed my happy mood.
The hostess and servers were very kind and very professional. They're very attentive and like to refill your water glass a lot. I ordered the "Seafood fettucini", very delicious! Someone had the "linguine and clams" (very salty and little flavor), "Calm Chowder" (not the typical kind, I don't recommend it because when I first tasted it, it taste like metal), "Calamari" (like anyother).
Our bill was 107. In all we were 5 people. Two appetizers and 4 entrees. I'm never going back. Not worth the time and It's too far for me. -

Oh YUMMY!
My friend and I have this thing that when we meet up we go somewhere that we have never been.
We were on our way to the Bars in SF and planned on eating prior,
Yabbies was on the way to the Bar so we stopped in because the menu looked nice.
THE CRAB CAKES ARE SOOOO delish! $8 for one or $16 for two - kind of pricy (but we are in SF)
The Burgers that both of us ordered were mouthwatering! They tasted as if they were freshly made - no burger frozen patty taste.
The service was great! Not a full bar so drinks for us but they did have wine.
Enjoyed it for being a random restaurant pick! -
Review from Gloria H.
Must admit we have checked out their menu and walked by this place many times - for whatever reason, it didn't look like a place we wanted to check out... Wanted seafood, yelped and read some reviews on this place. Checked out their menu online and we headed over.
Our waiter, Nicolo, was standing outside and his friendly greeting just made us felt better about trying this place. We were brought to the table behind the raw bar next to the side door. The inside is definitely better than expected. Nice ambiance lighting. Raw seafood bar to the right as you entered, a full bar to the left as you walk inside...
What we had:
Glass of Chardonnay $10 and Sauvignon Blanc $9
Ceviche - halibut - $12 - very good, not overly tart, served with some tortilla chips.
Oyster tour - one each of four differnt style of oysters - $9 - yummy
Seafood fettuccini - $18 - piping hot in a creamy tomato sauce - very tasty
Albacore tuna - special of the day - $18 - we asked if they can not cook it too much and it came out just seared on the outside...melts in the mouth.
We had wanted sauteed chard but they went out so we had the squash instead - the Italian herb seasoning really enhanced the flavor
A very enjoyable dinner and we look forward to returning soon. -

This place is definitely one of the nicest I've been to in SF. We went to have dinner a bunch of friends and we all enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere very much. I had the Risotto and a green salad and it was yummy. The prices are pretty reasonable. My husband had the Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna and he loved it!!! I also loved the design of this restaurant. I feel like we found a new great place to go during the weekends.

Incredible seafood!! The Tuna Poke was absolutely amazing. Looooved the fresh tuna, cucumbers, sesame oil and everything about the dish was melt in your mouth.
We started out with the Poke, Round of Oysters and split the Sea Bass for dinner.
Cute place for a date, great location, we strolled down the street for dessert afterward.
As far as service they might have had an off night. We had to ask for bread, never got checked on and the wine we ordered was out.
Other than that, this place has great food and cute simple decor. -

The happy hour is phenomenal. The value can't be beat because of the wide variety of drinks and food that is available at a discounted price.
Even though nothing really wowed me, the fare and service is pretty solid and the happy hour is worth returning for. -

I went there for the happy hour and ordered the Calamari, ceasar salad, fish tacos, and oyster.
Good parts:
The fish tacos were ok, and reasonably flavorful. The warm focacia bread was one of the highlights, but being complimentary did not weigh as much into the review. Service was fast but impersonal.
Heres where the stars were lost:
The Ceasar Salad was almost criminal. The greens were likely a day or two old. It was YELLOW. The parmesan was dried cheese chips, obviously the bottom of the barrel from the previous day. The Calamari lacked flavor but had ok texture (i.e. not rubbery).
Now granted I went there for happy hour and should have been expected happy hour quality, but this really was not even restaurant food, I really felt I had just been served leftovers from a college dorm fridge. -

I've been there before and it seems getting a decent seat where you are not squeezed next to a crying kid or a loud party is rare. I even asked for a quite table and the the corner one on my reservation. Well when we got there it was open and they said they were waiting for a larger party and could not accommodate us there, so we took the table next to it. Well we sat down and 2 minutes later the party arrived with a screaming kid. So we did not get our preferred table and we got the screaming kid. I know the screaming kid is not their fault but they could have asked the parents to take the kid out until they calmed down. Also they did nothing to compensate us for our miserable dinning experience. Sorry it was not 8 PM so I expect that time to be adult dining.
BTW...I love kids and believe they should be able to go out dining but no until they are old enough to behave or the parents should either go earlier or find a baby sitter. -

Nice little restaurant. Had an early dinner - so they had some really good early bird specials.
I enjoyed the Caesar salad, lots of anchovy flavor, which I love. I had the surf and turf which was pretty good and swallowed it down with 1/2 carafe of some tasty Pino Grig which was only $8.00.
Good place to dine, as there is a little of everything. I would go again, but only for an early dinner to save a buck. Service was good. -

Decent.
Despite my just-ok company, it wasn't bad. There was a wait, because it was Valentines Day, so we just went to Bullitt next door to wait it out. Yabbies' staff was friendly enough...
The heirloom tomato salad was underwhelming. The balsamic vinegar was too sweet, so it wasn't as good as I hoped. However, my friend's vegetable risotto was quite yummy.
Decent, but probably wouldn't choose to return... -

I went to Yabbies with a girlfriend last night (a Saturday night) at about 8pm. The place was EMPTY, which was a bit of a red flag, but we had no reservation, so beggars can't be choosers...
We sat at a cozy table outside that was in a little alcove, and made for great people watching, while still being able to enjoy a comfortable level of privacy for conversation.
The wine list was limited, but had a few options in a good price range. We had the Terra Robles Cab, which was about $35, and a great wine.
The oysters (I had kumamoto) were not the best I have had, and the mignonette they were served with left something to be desired.
My friend had the seared scallops with risotto, and said it was good.
I had the seafood linguine (mussels, shrimp, escarole, oven dried tomatoes in a heavy cream sauce as it were) and thought it was good. I know that 'good' isn't the best descriptor, but it is fitting for something that you would eat again, but wouldn't necessarily crave.
Service was great, very nice staff. -
Review from Ashley J.
I went here last night for dinner with a couple of friends. I'd say the atmosphere is definitely more of a romantic, intimate setting, and we weren't all there for a date, but it was pleasant, and we were seated right away.
We ordered a bottle of sparkling water and a bottle of sav blanc. We also ordered an appetizer of 4 large oysters. Bread and dipping oil was complimentary. The oysters were tasty, but a bit too fishy tasting for a couple of us. However, what do you expect with oysters? They're seafood.
I ordered the linguine and clams dish while my other 2 friends ordered the menu item right under that-- I believe it was a linguine and seafood dish as well, but had a cream based sauce instead of a wine based sauce (which I had), and more seafood than pasta.
It took a while for our food to come out, but we didn't really mind as we were enjoying good company and conversation. Our food finally came out and I have to admit, I LOVED my dish. The only thing I would suggest for my dish is less pancetta, and add fresh tomatoes. It would have been nice to have a fresh acid flavor in my dish, but it was wonderful nonetheless. I tasted my friend's dish, and it was also very tasty, but I'm glad I went with mine. In fact, one of my friends seemed to think I also ordered the better of the 2 dishes. I was happy and ate mostly all of it.
I will definitely come back here again. I have to admit it was a bit pricey, but considering we did order wine, sparkling water, and oysters which were $2.50 each, I'd say it was fair for what I paid (~$50). Entrees are between $13-23 or so, and mine was $18. It's definitely possible to come here and not spend a ton of money on dinner if you go easy on the alcohol and don't order appetizers. And maybe stick with tap water :) -
Review from Emily C.
We've always been reluctant to come to Yabbie's... I think because right after we moved to the neighborhood we were walking by one evening and a waiter standing out by the door tried to talk us into coming in for dinner... maybe I'd let that slide in North Beach, but upper Polk is too laid back for that. So... six months later we finally ended up coming in for happy hour and what a pleasant surprise it was!
We came in around 6:30 and sat at the bar. The atmosphere inside is not at all what I expected from the store front. It's modern, light, airy, and comfortable all at the same time.
We sat at the bar (because we love to grab a bite to eat at the bar) instead of at a table. The happy hour menu is short, but good. $1 oyster of the day, $3 fries, and other specials that were good, I just can't remember the prices. Drink specials were $4 draft beer or wines which is not bad for a nice happy hour, though not cheap cheap cheap.
We ordered a dozen oysters and a Caesar salad to split. I'm a sucker for Caesar salads and this one didn't disappoint. The romaine was fresh, cold and crisp and the salad was well-dressed. The oysters were so sweet and good that we actually ended up ordering another dozen.
Overall, it was a thoroughly satisfying experience. We'll definitely be back for a happy hour drink and snack. -

Nice space, friendly and accommodating staff, but the food leaves a lot to be desired.
We were absolutely famished (read: pretty easy to please), and still their food just didn't taste that great. Even the cubed up focaccia they serve in the bread basket is kinda dry and uninspired.
We had the clam chowder which was just awful. It was thin and runny and the flavor was just OK. I've had better clam chowder out of a can. Also it came with 4 clams in their shells, two of which did not taste fresh at all.
Next up was the Seared Dayboat Sea Scallops. The dish looked good, but outside of garlic, there wasn't much flavor. The scallops did have a nice sear on them.
We then had the linguine and fresh clams. It came with big chunks of pancetta which I wasn't a big fan of, and once again lacked flavor.
Unless there's a new chef, I wouldn't try this place again. -

Reserved for dinner but snuck in a dozen oysters and a couple of fish tacos from their happy hour menu.
The only thing that wow'ed me was their fish taco. I seriously don't even remmber clearly what I ordered from this place. If I recall correctly we had the risotto, the seafood fettucini and the sesame crusted ahi tuna. Everything lack the WOW factor.
I expect my food to be more memorable if we were to be charged a 4% Health fee. Most likely will not return again. -

I will keep this simple and sweet because that's exactly how I would sum up my Friday night at this place.
1. I slurped and licked every bit of broth of my ciopino.
2. My server, Nicolo, was very attentive and friendly!
Those are the only two things I want - Great food and Great service - Could a girl ask for more? -

Came in for dinner on Friday and lucky us we made it in time to still enjoy the happy hour menu. We were one of the few tables that got to enjoy the quiet of the restaurant in the early evening but it was packed when I left. We got to try a lot of things that were on the menu and I most definitely will be back.
$1 oysters they were pretty good...fish taco its was crispy and yummy...cesar salad not bad...shrimp tempura roll I was expecting sushi but it was a spring roll...burger and fries juice squirted out of the meat patty...crab salad was good and tasty and last but not least the 2 carafes of wine.
Decently priced...our bill for 2 was about $70 and not to mention the great service that we got and bless our server the endless glasses of wine that I got after we paid our bill. I would definitely come back again to try other things on the menu. This place totally deserves for love. -

I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes I make mistakes. Yes, yes, pick yourself up off the floor - I am human after all.
On a recent Thursday night, every other restaurant in Russian Hill was a 45 minute wait, so I insisted that we go to Yabbie's. When we walked in and heard the bad 80's music and saw the dated decor, I insisted that we stay. When we sat down and noticed that we were only one of three tables at 9pm on what should have been a busy night, I insisted that we order. Hunger can cloud your judgment, what can I say.
We ordered 3 things to share: Octopus, Crabcakes, and Seared Tuna. The octopus was terrible. Something was wrong with the preparation - it was a texture beyond rubbery and chewy - something that does not have a name in our language - just wrong, wrong, wrong. The crabcakes were pretty good, nothing beyond the ordinary. the seared tuna came with such a mound of vegetable ribbons on top it looked like Marge Simpson's hair - over the top and completely useless. The tuna was ok, not great - again, something was wrong with the preparation and it just tasted bland.
The service was nice enough, and the Prosecco was good. But I will listen to my head rather than my stomach next time. -
