One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Trendy, upscale bar in the W hotel. Great place to take a few friends or a date to hang out. Spacious, awesome bartenders and a DJ spinning music in the corner. If you want something more intimate, there's an upstairs area with a very sexy feel. Plenty of places to sit and lounge. The best part? Being able to order a juicy burger at 1am!
So, after having spent a day in and around Union Square and paying $11 too much to see a movie at the Metreon (we'll discuss this later) the time came for dinner. It took me a while to settle on coming here in the first place but I'm glad I did.
When I arrived (dining solo...still working on that whole $ugar daddy thing), I was offered magazines and newspapers to keep me company while I waited for my food. WHY don't other places do this?! That was the first of many unexpected pleasant moments that would come.
The next surprising moments were the amuse bouche and the post-dessert treats I received, which I had only come to expect at really high-end restaurants where my final tab would be 2-3 times as much as I spent here.
Okay okay enough with the little things, I suppose I'll talk about the food. Was it mind-blowingly spectacular? Not really. Was it good? Yes. Was dessert good? Yes. I had the pasta dish with the chicken/pancetta ragú and I have to say it was very refreshing in a "I'm-not-being-weighed-down-by-all-these-damn-carb s" sort of way. For dessert I had the banana panna cotta which was really good AND didn't leave me feeling over-full. Portion sizes may look small but I think that's because we've been accustomed to the Cheesecake Factory-ization of our restaurant experiences.
All in all, I don't have many complaints. The service was very nice and attentive, the food was good, and the decor was nice. I'll be back. Someday. Probably soon. Crap, now I'm hungry again.
I love W Hotels. The bar at this one was a bit of a disappointment, however.
The cover (which may be negotiable if you are assertive) is too expensive, especially when you have to wait in line quite a while and then enter an overcrowded bar with high drink prices. The bar is on the second floor so there isn't a view of the city, but you can look down upon the lobby (which was filled with much to look at).
I would recommend going to the lobby bar and just hang out there. The lobby was a hive of fun and no pretentious lines or cover charge.
Stopped by here on Fri around 1:00 AM and got compelled to downgrade. On weekends, this place gets 2 stars. The silly crowd, dirty bar/tables, rushed cocktail making....not to my liking.
Hence, the overall average of 3 stars is more like it.

Played out? No doubt. Severely annoying people? Yea, sure. Expensive? Ain't cheap.
But really,… Read more »
Came to the lounge for a party and the larger room with the stage connected to the large bar was for trance and there was a corner for hiphop. Classy crowd with some bitchy/trashy girls in between. Overall, liked the hotel, parking was convenient at the Moscone Center and music was great. Drinks are pricier here, like Santana Row prices, $13 for sparkling wine, $11 for martinis. But they are good! Would come again.
$12 Absolut and Tonic? $20 cover to get in? Bring your credit card and be prepared to SPEND. Coming from Chicago where I've seen it all, I was surprised to see so many girls wearing skirts that they probably should not have been. Must be the style in SF. If you arrive past 12:30AM, which we did, don't expect to go upstairs unless you know someone or are accompanied by the fairer sex. Have a drink, make fun of dudes trying too hard and stumble back to your hotel...just like I did!
From time to time I feel the need to swank out in a trendy setting, so when I heard a goodbye party for a friend was at XYZ at the W, I got really excited about it. The place was filled with late 20 to early 30 somethings, all well dressed, and I swear there was a hooker there too (I guess to spice it up?). I simultaneously felt proud that I could afford a $9 beer in an economic recession and also completely stupid for wasting my money that way, but I drank it anyway. I loved the fire place and the nice couches, and the hip electronic music. Overall, I left feeling pretty satisfied, but I'm glad I only stayed for an hour, or else I would have emptied my IRA on beer.
Reasonably located hang-out bar/hotel lobby.
Two lobby bleeds into the bar so you can kinda find your niche here which is nice. Some suits and short black dresses hang by the fireplace and bar but you can find a quiet, comfy sofa further back into the lobby.
There is also a Ms-PacMan table top arcade...sweet.
Drinks are so-so and the calamari was oily. Get place to mingle with friends before heading to dinner.
There are celebrities at this lounge? No wonder why people were posing like models when the cameras flashed. The music is good and it's full of beautiful people. The VIP tables have nice leather seats.
Of course, here were girls making innuendos and insulting each other. Classy. Is it my imagination, or are these people more touchy feely than normal? Thanks, I need to take a shower now.
Don't come here in cheap jeans and tshirts. It's upscale with cocktail dresses and designer jeans.
As a part of the W Hotel SF, XYZ can't help but slightly reek of 'tourist'. Fortunately for those who venture here, they're sassy business travelers and stylish travel enthusiasts; the best brand of tourist one could hope for... and not ALL tourists suck, hey, I was there ;-)
Vibe was upscale and ultra chill... sleek digs, fancy people and that trendy signature W ambient music at the optimum volume for having fun *and* facilitating convo. Find yourself lounging on pretty pieces of furniture, basking in the glow of flickering candlelight, sashaying through beaded curtains... it's chic cocktailing at it's finest.
Got a nice feather in my cap taking clients here which served my agenda splendidly. We were well taken care of with a trifecta of crisp martinis, a lovely Spanish wine (rioja, natch) and divinely unobtrusive service. Not sure I'd hit up this locale for anything more than a drink or two. While XYZ is an honestly great segue to other evening trouble, your sole final destination?? Eh... (sung to the alphabet song) X Y and Z... now I know my ABC's.... something else is sure to please.
Visited last weekend and it was packed. Get the pizza!
Service: 2 stars
I was ignored by one bartender, but luckily there was another attentive one. I had to ask 2 people for peppers for my pizza (they both brought them, but I was half finished by the time the first person I asked delivered).
Drinks: 3 stars
Average priced in the city. Decent list.
Food: 4 stars
OMFG GET THE PIZZA!!! It was so good, I almost got one to go. But that's all I tried, lol.
Vibe: 3.5 stars
Loungey/trendy/everything else other reviews said...but there were kids when I first arrived. I was dressed casually and really just wanted to grab a drink in the area. I felt sorely under dressed and there was nowhere to sit after 10pm.
Bonus for letting me take my drink out front to smoke, but sadly, there were no tables or chairs. I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but if I was in the area I might go back and get the pizza. 3 star average.
Upscale to the fullest, you're either a baller or a pretender here. Drinks are super expensive ($12 for a Jameson & ginger, WTF?) and while the ambience is cool, I ran up a $200 tab buying drinks for everyone - guess that makes me the sucker. On one end of the bar were a couple of business type folks in their late 40s. Right off the bat, not my crowd. The music wasn't all that either. There's really no reason for me to ever come back.
If I could, I'd rate this place with 3.5 stars. I've sat at the bar and at the tables and have to say that sitting at the bar is a better idea because the service is more attentive. Most recently, a group of six, including myself, visited here on a Friday. Drinks were adequately prepared, food was where the decision between three and four stars bumped it up to four. Definitely get the pizza. I had it the first time I was here, and it was delicious. I suggest getting it to share with a group because it's too much for one person. I also tried the Edamame; not your ordinary Edamame! It was soooo good, I ate it shamelessly as my fingers were covered in the sauce they put on it. My friends ordered the duck and scallops, the risotto that came with the duck was delicious! Everything I've ever eaten here is fantastic. I also suggest the Beet Salad for those of you that like Beets. It was phenomenal.
The atmosphere is classy, but there are indeed some obnoxious people here sometimes. My first time here, the women on the other side of the bar were having a field day giving me dirty looks, for a reason I've yet to figure out.. Maybe because I was with four men. Anyway, I probably wouldn't come here by myself to meet randoms, but coming with friends has been a good experience everytime.
This review is for the bar only (where I've been dragged on 5 different occasions):
Overpriced, crowded, slow service, lots of tourists. Trendy decor can't overcome all that.
Trendy bar/lounge located in the W Hotel. Now I understand why all those rap songs refer to partying in the hotel lobby! I definitely enjoyed the more dolled up environment, and this venue has a good mixed crowd. Though the bar was packed, the bartender was efficient and great at making sure he was attending to patrons on all sides of the bar.
My only problem with this place is its size and price. The upstairs area (which I heard was double the size of downstairs) was closed off the night I went. And as for the steep prices ...I guess that was to be assumed with it being California AND a hotel bar.
The actual lounge/restaurant area was closed by the time my party arrived so I have no comment on the food.
I highly recommend making a reservation to XYZ on the 3rd Thursday of each month for the DISH on FASHION event, a monthly fashion & dining series. Each event features a tableside fashion show of couture and urban artwear from local designers.
The featured designer for Septemeber at XYZ is Joui Turandot of VAGADU. Check out: http://www.vagadu.net
The DISH on Fashion includes:
* three-course dinner
* glass of bubbles upon arrival
* tableside fashion show
* designer trunk show immediately to follow dinner service
$48 per person
(not including tax, gratuity or additional beverage service)
the DISH on FASHION Opening Show:
Thursday, September 17th
Dinner service begins at 7:00 pm.
XYZ comes off as a classy joint. It's trendy, sexy, cool, and hip. I enjoyed the vibe and the ambiance a lot. The upstairs bar has pretty comfortable seating and you're able to socialize with people very easily in groups.
I can't say anything about the food since I've never ordered food here but the drinks were pretty darn tasty and strong. I enjoyed the Greyhounds very much. I also tried a Mojito which was descent but nothing worth bragging about. The drinks are pricey --you can expect to pay about $12 for a mixed drink and higher for a top shelf mixed drink.
The music was fun and tasteful --that probably varies each night. It wasn't that loud either which is a good thing because we could actually hear each other talk without having to scream.
The type of people who come here range from 25-40's. I do notice older men and wannabe high-rollers here.
It wouldn't be my first choice but I wouldn't mind coming back here.
I went here for dinner and breakfast and both meals were heavenly! We had great service, the staff was friendly and their recommendations were perfect. I needed some items tweeked for my order and they went above and beyond!
This review is only for the lounge upstairs.
We came here for my friend's 23rd birthday. She had heard that it was a really classy place, somewhere were you need to get all dressed up and stuff too. The upstairs lounge is small but very pretty. We had a big group and we were lucky that the 2nd biggest private section was available. White couches and sheer white drapes hung as dividers made it look like a really classy place.
Drinks here are really expensive. We had a really nice lady that took our orders. Although it was only one person who ordered 3-4 drinks, she still charges us a 18% gratuity fee because we had a large party. After that, we stuck to just getting drinks directly from the bar.
So everyone in our group is 22-24 years old and we were definitely the youngest group there that night. Felt a little out of place. XYZ is a really pretty place, but I don't think its best suited for a younger group of people to celebrate birthdays. I see this place is a bar older people come just to grab a drink or two and socialize, and some of your usual couple older and creepy prowlers.
This place is really hit or miss for me. I've had some great nights here with friends, good service and well-concocted drinks.
The music is usually decent (mostly on the techno side) and the vibe is good especially if you are in the mood to meet attractive singles.
Last Friday I was here and ordered two shots for myself and a friend. it was going to be tequila at my request but the bartender convinced me otherwise. He gave us pink lemonade. The grand total for two 1 ounce pink lemonade shots? Twenty bucks. You HAVE got to be kidding me. That is just plain insulting.
We went here for the a three course meal and it was quite delicious. The place is well decorated and has a good atmosphere. You aren't rushed through your meal and can really enjoy a great dinner, especially if you have good company. We decided to get the wine pairings with our dishes, which was superb. Good bang for your buck.
The food was excellent although one of the other people dining complained that the portions were a little small. She said, "I could inhale this steak."
Overall verdict: perfect place to go for a great meal and drinks before a night out on the town.
This would definitely be the type of place that you only go when you are in the mood for...this type of place (Redundant, but true).
A friend and I decided we wanted to go the "classy" route for Thursday night drinks (instead of our usual trashy modus operandi) so we chose XYZ Bar, because it is exactly that (venue-wise). It is a really nicely decorated, with sexy lighting and leather couches and revolving doors and all of that. It is a nice place to go on a Thursday if you actually want to have conversation with your liquor, rather than proceeding straight to the mating rituals.
I recommend bringing a conversation partner with you though, because the majority of the patrons at XYZ bar are of the "see and be seen" variety, or just flat out douchebags.
We had the privilege of conversing with one young man who first bragged about his prestigious Clairemont-McKenna education and then shamed us for attending public Universities, then bought us a shot of tequila and berated us for taking it in shot form, because "he was planning on just sipping it". I also had to SERIOUSLY harness my inner chi in order to stop myself from bitch-slapping an entitled sorority girl type who literally wedged herself in between me and the guy next to me at the bar and started waving a menu in my face.
In short--venue: good, crowd:I've had better.
Went out last night on a whim. Wanted to get some drinks, hear some music and relax in a lounge style setting. This place has it all. You can hear the music and people at the bar downstairs and look down on them from above. I'm not much for all the loud music or dancing. Rather I like to sit and enjoy my drink. Bar was crowded around 11 ish. But, still able to get a drink rather quickly.
Crowd is Asian with some tourist from the W Hotel wandering in. Sat on the comfortable half couches and just watched people...not a bad venue with the exception of the drink prices. Bring lots of cash/credit card.
This is definitely not somewhere I would go every week; that said, on a special occasion it's worth the extra bucks (am I saying this because I didn't pay for my food? maybe...)
Ambience: a bit dead for a Saturday night, but the DJ was good (mostly hip hop stuff)
Food: Overpriced, but tasty. If you aren't opposed to splurging on a burger, get that. I found the duck over-salted.
Drinks: We brought our own (ballin!), but I noticed that the cocktail menu/novel looked enticing.
Service: A+...Will is the man. He knows a ton about drinks and is fun to chat with.
This review is for dinner only.
The ambiance was just right; dim lighting, candles, beautiful flowers. We were seated in a big round booth which was perfect for a date. Our waiter was fantastic, very attentive and personable.
We had the Point Reyes oysters, tombo, chestnut ravioli with scallops, porterhouse, and chocolate cake. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. I was ambivalent about ordering the ravioli at first but it ended up being my favorite dish. Their eco-pear cocktail was really nice, not overly sweet. I had a fantastic dinner and will definitely return.
5* for patron gravitas. 6* for service. 7* for the hotel.
* This is a review for the brunch/lunch only *
Sunday morning, no reservation needed. Pleasant and classy atmosphere, suitable for less casual occasions. Friendly and professional service. This is the W after all.
But the food was not so memorable. It was standard "good", with nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered a couple of things from their brunch menu, including egg white scramble (quite healthy...and it can be customized with any ingredients you like), bagel with smoked salmon (with three diff flavors of cream cheese, including cucumber), eggs chilaquiles, and chicken salad sandwich with fries. I must say that the chilaquiles was probably the best selection of all.
As many of the reviews have pointed out...the place is a tad overpriced even at lunch time. But again, this is the W after all.
So I see that this place turns into a hip lounge at night. Awesome. Judging from the photos, it's probably a better idea to go back in the evening next time.
SUM: 3.5 stars for now...I need to go back during their crazy hours!
This place is hilarious! It's one of those bars that is just so self-consciously "hip", with the mod chairs and the faux rock fire place . If only it had a sense of humor about itself, it might be even more enjoyable.
This is just one of those places you have to experience for the fun of it. It's too funny to pass up. I'd recommend going here if you're still in your twenties and trying to get into someone's pants. Everything's in place at the hotel W to help with your agenda: cool restaurant, cool bar to get someone drunk, and cool rooms to knock boots.
Combined both experience, and for the price for what I get, I will just rate it a four star. The restaurant met my expectations but there are rooms for improvements.
So what is the XYZ? It's a modern-styled classy hotel bar that's lost a bit of its lustre.
More for lounging around. If you feel like dancing it's not going to happen because there's virtually no dance floor. It's a really interesting mix of people which I think i enjoy. It's bustling and crowded and the bartenders are attentive which I liked. The music is also diverse from top 40's to house.
So me and my OC girls partied it up here this past Friday night. I loved the ambiance of the place. Drinks were pricey...but expected. I would definitely give this place 5 stars if they played more than just dance/trance music. I definitely had a blast giving the SF folks a taste of how LA girls get down...we're nasty freaks and proud babayyyy. I'd definitely come back here next time I take a vaca up north.
Great chill spot to get some drinks, food, and have great conversations with your friends. The crowd is mixed depending on what season it is or if there's a convention going on. My friends and I just love coming here to enjoy lounging on the coaches sipping on the expensive, but yummy cocktails. One of the places that knows how to make a champagne cocktail correctly!

I usually hang out in the lobby lounge and have tasted their little appetizers and snacks like fries… Read more »
I would have to say this is a trendy spot for people to go and hang out and buy overpriced drinks and talk about themselves. The food was ok, the service was a little slow and it got a little crowded. My girlfriend has been there before and she even said that it's the not same as it use to be. Probably won't go back there unless I have to.
Swanky, yes. Luxurious, you betcha. Expensive, of course. Trendy, jackpot.
I love XYZ for all its glorious, dark, sexy ways, but more importantly because I can actually remember the damn name. ABC, XYZ, easy.
Think James Bond martinis (shaken not stirred) with a dosage of Clark Gable and a hint of Marilyn Monro circa now. The people are faboosh, classy, and modern and the atmosphere is surprisingly inviting despite its rich overtone.
The music is chill and it's definitely a kick-back lounge. You can mingle and converse without feeling like the spotlight is on you. In other words, you're not yelling at your friends to ask how they're doing while "Pour some sugar on me" is on blast, and the person to your left is downing a shot of Yager, shouting, "ooohhh-weeeee, get it girl!"
This is the perfect HH place if you want a little fabulousity. It starts to get crowded as night closes in. But after a couple of dirty martinis, who's counting.
oh man, the olive bread. i wish the bread guy came around more but then, i felt sooo self-conscious even flagging anyone down? felt too uptight for me, i think...until the wine got to me & i loosened up a little. i ordered the jumbo scallops with risotto and it was SOOOO good. i'm new to "fine dining" (& i apologize if this isn't considered "fine dining") and super fresh seafood but damn, those scallops were good and the risotto! OH don't get me started, i really wish that they gave me a huge bowl of that. i guess you really can't get both quality and quantity. hmph. ugh, so good...the scallops were cooked to perfection and they were sooo damn delicious. the sweetness, the texture. *foodgasm*
my date (who was the birthday boy & who ended up paying. haha!) mentioned something about the restaurant being too dark but i liked it. i like dark restaurants, it sets the mood, you know. plus, a lot of people look better in the dark. haha just kidding! i think i'm still drunk from the wine? haha. i wish we tried the dessert but we were hella full from our meals. i think because i took my time & savored my 3 jumbo scallops --- didn't wanna inhale them. haha.
afterwards, we went back for the lounge...eh. why do i have to pay cover to go to a lounge? again, i didn't pay so i shouldn't be complaining. i didn't like the music they were playing but there were plenty of chairs to sit in. so, that's a good thing. i heard the "tropical" tea was good. was it called tropical tea? some sort of tea (not long island) but it was really good, i heard.
bathrooms were clean, so that's good.
I've been to XYZ for their DAT and also their bar, so I'll review them separately.
Food-wise:
Last year, I was kind of disappointed when came here initially because I had chosen the restaurant specifically because their DAT menu sounded really good. When I arrived there, they had changed their menu, so I had to settle for something else. =( However, we were all happy with our meal despite the change. Overall, I thought the food was good. The chef gives you this cucumber dish that is supposed to cleanse your palate before you eat. I thought that was cool. We got the crab cakes for the appetizer, which were pretty good. I settled for the lamb as my entree. From what I remember, the lamb was tender, fell off the bone, but the flavor was a little salty. The desserts were an assortment of sorbets and something else, I forget. The DAT menu was definitely worth it. Good food, good service, really nice ambience and decor.
BAR:
the XYZ lounge is upstairs, and is relatively small, but has areas with couches and tables where people can chill at. The drinks there can be a little pricey, but they have a large assortment of drinks. I haven't been disappointed in their drinks yet. I like coming here for a night for when I just want to get a little dressed up but just chill.
Went to XYZ for last night's "Styling the Modern Man" gala event. Overall a great event and venue.
Standard sleek, stylish and soothing W hotel decor, with sexy ambient music playing. We walked upstairs and started out in the bar area, tucked into one of the comfy neutral colored couches. From our perch we could see out over the restaurant downstairs, which also looked quite nice.
Staff was great, they had lots of great appetizers circulating (the ahi tuna over sushi was my favorite) and some nice displays of veggies and other nibbles out to help soak up the complimentary Blue Angel brand vodka cocktails. We took a walk around through the other rooms which were set up with various services and displays. My partner got a touch-up trim from the MR. hairstylist, which was great because I've been trying to get him over there for a while now. They had several bars set up, which minimized queues even in the more popular areas.
We went upstairs where there was dj and dance floor area and a couple more bars - this would be a great space for a private event. I have planned and/or attended several events with W group in NYC and SF and they have always had consistently good service, ambience, and food/drink - this event was definitely no exception!
This place is... well, expensive, to say the least. It's nicely decorated and the ambiance is definitely there. The staff is professional, but not open to conversation... sell, sell, sell is the goal. Everything to them is DELICIOUS. What if you don't like cucumbers in your cocktail? Well, the drink that has the cucumber is DELICIOUS you HAVE TO try it.
I got their French whatever drink here (with the cucumbers) at a party and their sample of the ravioli. I have to say that it was the most expensive 3 pieces of ravioli I've ever eaten. The drink was... not tasty, but it certainly made my friend Sarunya happy when I took a sip, made a mouth drop disgusted face and passed it to her. She was already two and a half drinks down and everything probably tasted like water to her by then.
Overall, I think I'd come back if I had more money and were really willing to throw money at the problems I had here. A bigger portion of ravioli would have left me more content, and maybe a more expensive drink would have satiated my alcohol-essential stress relief for after work. Maybe if I offered a higher tip I would get some real answers as well.
I'm not a big fan of XYZ, however for private parties and special events they do a great job.
The food and service are great. A little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. I have overall been happy with their hospitality.
The downside is... the clientele it attracts later in the night is sketchy... Just a helpful hint for those single ladies, Be aware...
This review is only for their Lunch Time...I've yet to come here for what I'm hearing is a, "poppin' bar scene."
Now, for lunch, YUMMY! I had the W Burger. And it was AWESOME. From the melted cheese, to the juicy mushrooms to the toasted-buttered-bun (excuse me while I wipe my drool). It was cooked exactly how I wanted it, and it all worked together perfectly. My "fries" were more like seasoned potatoe wedges, which also tasted amazing. My meal was ridiculously satisfying. The co-worker next to me had some kind of other burger, with more traditional fries. I had a couple of those bad boys, and they were crispy and perfect as well.
The location and atmosphere...we're at the W. So it is kind of yuppy/fancy looking. So if you're not into that, then maybe not the best place to go. But, I thought it was really nice and charming. Not too fancy where I felt out of place. We were on a business lunch, so the conversation topics started off awkward...leading us to talk about how the comfy the chairs were. Which nonetheless, they were! Walking out, I was really impressed by the booths and wanted to sit there the next time.
5 Stars for good food, friendly waitress (Sephora, you go girl!), and pretty decor.
The only reason I decided to dine here is because of the Dine About...and of course to experience the whole ambiance, pretty much what I think people pay for. Anywho, the menu for their dine about had some good selections, to start of I chose their corn soup (simple) but the taste was just right, I mean what can go wrong ...lol! and for my main entree, I had the skirt steak which by the way was an excellent choice, just because I find the other entree to might be possibly dry...had bad experience with fish before in other resto and the only time I would order fish dishes besides my steak is when I'm in a resto that's known to have good seafood. Dessert was not all that, it had that weird texture, I wasn't able to describe whether it was an ice cream or cheesecake.
I LOVE their interior at the lounge...so chic! it's definitely a good hang out place with the girlfriends ;)
BTW...i had one small prob with my capecod, so I ordered my second round but as it turns out it was more of a cranberry juice with no alcohol...hmmm.! the first definitely was delish, but come second made me ask myself if it was for a kid?! lol! and the server dared tried to argue that their bartenders are skilled...skilled of pouring too much cranberry...sorry but i love my drinks done well with enough alcohol in it...am not an alcoholic but i would love to get what i ordered for the price i am paying...and so 3-stars only..
