There is no other way to describe this place other than with one great big JAW-DROP to the gorgeous girliness that awaits you inside. I was ready to do cart wheels at once upon walking into the pink cloud of vintage goodies!
Elegant fur coats, high societal ladies-who-lunch hats, and super fun glittery party dresses that all lead up to the showy changing room up front. I don't know how the owner managed to collect such an amazing showcase of vintage dresses, and in amazing condition - but its certainly worth an applause.
If I were a costumer this would certainly be one of my secret spots to indulge in - otherwise its rather pricey here. Most of the dresses/gowns started at $198. Clearly if your a gal who has a solid heart for vintage and the figure to rock these frocks, you wouldn't have an issue with prices.
A girly wonderland dream come true! Betsy Johnson would be pink with envy here. -

LOVE LOVE LOVE. If you were to step back to the mid 40s - 50's and walk into a ladies boutique this is what I had imagined what it would be like. I felt like I was on a Mad Men set or a Stepford Wives set. Everything was pretty. The bf strolled in with me as we took a look around but didn't get anything because unfortunately they didn't have what I was looking for. The owners are brilliant at staging and all of the clothing is well taken care of. No stains or holes like many vintage shops have. If you love vintage then I suggest a visit here then go to Broder for something tasty!
Note: Staff was super sweet. -

I've read many of the other reviews regarding Xtabay. I'm actually pretty amazed that so many people give this shop 5 stars. I'm also extremely surprised to see that so many people have said that the staff was super helpful and nice. My experience with the staff was the exact opposite.
I stopped by this shop yesterday to look for a vintage dress for my husband's company Christmas party. I spent my time looking through the store. Browsing my way looking at each dress that was hanging on the racks. Many of the dresses were simply gorgeous. However, I spent about 30 minutes in the shop with out so much as a "hello" or any kind of greeting from the staff. I was there to try on dresses and to purchase a vintage dress to wear to this party.
An employee was standing at the counter chatting with a friend or two the entire time I was there, not giving a care to who was there to actually shop. Another gal was flitting around not really doing much of anything. I hung around the counter of the shop looking at hats and the jewelry in the case hoping that I might be asked if someone can help me. To no avail, the ladies at the counter continued to chat and ignore me. I don't need to be doted on hand and foot but a bit of service would have possibly resulted in a sale instead of me just walking out.
I'm not really sure why this shop receives so many rave reviews for service. I can understand the great reviews on dresses, however, I'll never know since I left before I tried any on.
I found the service to be deplorable and as such I will not return. -
Review from Sherry S.
How can these clothes be from 50-75 years old and yet, so incredibly new looking? It's as if a time capsule encapsulated them all that time and then dropped them in to the shop.
The owner has all of her items perfectly cleaned, perfectly ironed. Eye candy everywhere you look. They even have the plastic over the top of each hanger to keep the dust off.
And there are so many hangers of deliriously beautiful dresses, skirts, and blouses. She's got shoes, jewelry and hats as well. It's the mother lode of vintage.
I was overwhelmed by all of it, and very happy that the owner is treating these tailored, and detailed items with such loving care, as if they were historical pieces in a museum.Listed in: Old and Timeless to Vintage…

If you are in the market for retro glamour, stop in to Xtabay.
Frankly, I was a little nervous to touch anything at first. Everything in this shop is all just a little too pretty and perfect. But the kindly sales gal put me right at ease, telling me to try on anything I please. And I was off to the races.
I tried on all kinds of amazing things from fancy furs to demure looking dresses. But alas I did not meet my clothing match that day. Rest assured I will be back to look through this lovely, lovely boutique another day and with any luck, will find something I can't live without on my next hunting trip.Listed in: Fabulous Costumes, Dress like a diva

This place is amazing. Not only are their staff and owner super helpful, their inventory of jewelry and dresses are completely fabulous. I went in looking for a specific vintage look and walked out with several items that I'll be able to wear day to day.

In all my adult life I've only had one apartment that had an amazing closet... amazing, because it was a full walk-in. At the time, I'd already been collecting and wearing vintage for well over a decade and a half... I've been collecting now for 22 years and although I wear it less and less these days, I miss that closet... crepe, silk, lace, and linen dresses hung neatly by color and sleeve length... cashmere sweaters folded neatly... silk and taffeta suits ... bags dating to the 30s in every color imaginable... and my shoes... ((((((sigh))))))
When I first walked in to Xtabay it was like I walked in to a larger version of my favorite closet from years past. A stunning collection of wearable, vintage pieces abound... mostly dresses, and most of which have stitched in labels collectors like myself covet. The owner definitely knows her stuff and sure, while some prices might seem high in comparison to other shops in Portland, they are LOW to those in the know. I purchased an amazing Lilli Ann leopard blazer for $80 which has easily become my favorite crisp weather cover up and I've received tons of compliments.
There is also a great selection of Spring-o-Lators in great condition and super reasonable prices. Great stuff. Friendly owner! I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland!Listed in: Portland, OR

AMAZING! My friend wanted to go here to check it out and browse around. Well we were just blown away by the wonderful dresses and the condition of the pieces they have.
The sales associate was sweet and we chatted about a cute slip from the 40's that was quite risqué for the time!
They also sell scented soaps, little perfumes, and Butter Nail Polish here.
All in all, if you love Vintage, and have some $$ to drop go here! The dresses are all in great condition and there's a style for everyone! -

This is a great vintage shop with a lovely feminine atmosphere, great staff, and a wonderful selection of vintage dresses. Each item has been carefully cleaned, pressed and repaired. The clothes are high end or designer pieces - no shabby chic or 70's polyester here. The selection of hats is amazing, and the vintage jewelry is fun, with a broad range of prices.
Even better, the service is always great. I was in there today and the owner, Liz, was helping a woman who was purchasing a couple of very expensive dresses. I was truly delighted that Liz was just as friendly and helpful when my turn came - I had a very modest purchase but she treated me like a prized customer. Both she and Joanne are friendly and helpful without being pushy, and enjoy helping you find the perfect vintage piece. -

You know how every vintage store in Portland is filled with the same ugly hipster crap? Racks upon racks of ponchos, Cosby sweaters, and- as my friend put it- "frilly dresses salvaged from some Mennonite's attic?"
Xtabay is basically the opposite of that. Every piece in this store is lovingly hand-picked by the owner and it SHOWS. Most of what you'll find here seems to range from the 1920's to the 1960's, and is always in perfect or nearly perfect condition.
If you want cheap, go to the bins. If you want something beautiful, go to Xtabay. -

This shop is beautiful & has a lot of lovely items but the one time I went in there looking to drop some cash, the owner 1) didn't even acknowledge me & 2) spent the entire time gabbing with a group of women. I hung around, in hopes she would ask me if I wanted to look at anything/ try anything on, but she never even looked my way. I didn't even feel comfortable enough to interrupt and ask for help. What a shame.

Review from Lauren M.
Shortly after I wrote my review, the owner Liz contacted me to say that she started carrying a more affordable line. To be fair, my first review was a bit harsh; I didn't take into consideration the high quality of the 50-60yr old garments of clothing when complaining about pricing.
So, as soon as I was in the market for a new dress, I dropped by this shop again in what turned out to be my first and only stop. It is very rare for me to find what I am looking for before at least a little shopping around. I am very pleased with the dress I found. It was a hit at the wedding I attended, of good quality, and very affordable (just under $40, just as Liz said).
It really makes me happy that Liz is paying attention to what her customers have to say. One of things that I love about Yelp is that it is not just a forum for discussion between reviewers, but it creates a place for discourse between customers and business owners. This is a perfect example of how effective and useful it can be. Thank you so much!Listed in: Born to Shop

Without revealing too much, let's just say I have lived through the 70's in all the sartorial splendor that entails ( oh yes, I DID have saddle back jeans, Kork-eeze sandals, Bare Traps, halter tops, way too much turquoise jewelry... and, the cherry on top: I did own a purple velour bikini...), so, the current retro fad wears on me a tad. All this said, I can also remember the elaborate rituals my mother went through each day getting 'ready' for work - that would be an arsenal of foundation wear, nylon stockings, high heels, handbag (she worked in an office)...and I am currently obsessed with 'Mad Men'. This was when women still had an air of mystery, which is sadly lacking today. In addition to these salient facts, I, for one, am just fed up with nonstop jeans everywhere for every occasion! Why don't people understand that different clothing for different occasions makes sense??
So, Xtabay is my idea of a little respite from the sloppy jeans & T shirt crowds...I found a perfect pencil skirt as well as a classic 1940's pink rayon slip. Throw in some Butter nail polish (the color is called 'Frilly Knickers"), and, as far as I'm concerned, bring on Season 2 of 'Mad Men' on DVD!! I am set! I plan to make many return visits! The woman in the shop was such fun to talk with and her little dog, Gabe, is a hoot! The boys were along for the ride & they were treated like royalty. Who wouldn't love that?
This is my spot to select inspiring clothing and to dress with a flourish! -

Going to Xtabay is like treating yourself to a fancy gelato place. The colors are pretty, it's very clean and sparkly, and you walk out feeling slightly guilty that you have treated yourself so well instead of digging through crusty clothing at Goodwill.
It's definitely small, but you can tell that every single outfit has been carefully cleaned and handpicked with loving care. I LOVE that everything is color-coordinated. Handy! Also, the poodle decor is out of control. Why does my apt not look like this??
Yes, the prices can be a little high, but I will say the quality is definitely there. Anything over $100 is usually in immaculate condition and exceptionally beautiful.
The ladies who work there are very friendly and don't pressure you too much if you can't afford anything. Then you can walk two feet to Dot's and get yourself a six dollar pitcher of Pabst! -

Things I love (while shopping):
-Vintage clothing (especially girlie, fluttery dresses and such)
-Clean, organized and visually appealing store set
-Friendly AND helpful staff who are honest with you
-Fair prices
-Location - meaning I want to get to it on my bike
-Incredible selection
Xtabay is fabulous! They have some really amazing clothing, jewelry and accessories ranging from inexpensive to quite expensive. I fell in love with 3 dresses while I was in there for less than 20 minutes - they were all vintage and beautiful!!! If they would have been my size and fit just a little more comfortably, I would have bought in an instant because they were moderately priced. Well, maybe I couldn't have afforded all of them, but at least one...maybe two if I stopped buying beer for a week. On the bright side, the store takes credit!
They get new things often so I think the key is to return frequently to make sure you don't miss anything you absolutely NEED!!!
When it comes down to it, Xtabay makes me feel fancy and girlie; and I love that just about as much as I love shopping! -

Everything here is in perfect or near-perfect condition. Most of their stuff ranges from late forties to mid-sixties, and at least half is high on the glamor scale. The ladies are super-friendly and helpful, too.
It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Even if you have the budget, I highly recommend you stop in here, just so you can be dazzled. -

I couldn't stay away from Xtabay. We visited there the first time after hearing of them carrying a line of wedding dresses I wanted to look at for a friend of mine, I have been there two times in a week and yet, uh, my friend has had to investigate Urchin wedding dresses herself!
I've only bought one thing: a silk dress to wear on the night of my one year anniversary. Given my improbable proportions, I had despaired of finding vintage. Xtabay's owner took that as a challenge! She presented me with three options (2 black dresses and one bold silk red and navy shift). Black dress #1 did not accommodate my 2009 hips. i thought about my largely monochromatic black wardrobe and the fact that the red in the shift was exactly the color of my hair, touching it realized it was pure silk, and slipped it over my head.
Gasps from everybody when I went to show it off, husband and other shoppers included. It truly looks like it was made for me and it truly looks like a well preserved piece of late 1950's atomic age art. This is what we want out of vintage, right? And talk about a fair price! The deadstock all silk dress had been marked as $89. It was on the sale rack for 60% off. I found the absolutely perfect dress for $35.
The owner had such an eye for style and figure and proportion: an artist's eye. If I could have a personal shopper, I know who I would want. Totally non-pretentious place to page through the history of completely fancy pants stuff. (Some new sundries like nail polish and perfume.) Oh my god. I am going to invent reasons to go to Xtabay! -

I wanted to look like a cupcake or a ballerina for my graduation and was sent in the direction of Xtabay. After fervently stalking the boutique on etsy and it's blog I was super excited to finally make it in. Though the proprietress was busy with friends of hers when I came in I overlooked this fact and began browsing. I was looking for something super specific so of course they did not have it and the fact that I was there at the height of wedding season didn't help my chances. But I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful 80's spaghetti strap wrap dress that was super duper flattering and just perfect for the occasion--and half the price I was expecting to spend on a dress since it was a bit on the casual side for the merchandise in the store! For a super duper quality merchandised vintage shop this one is definitely the place to shop for a dress, and you pay for that fact. But I am so happy with the quality and style of the dress I got and will be back to browse if I'm ever on the hunt again.

If you love the thrill of the hunt, this isn't your place. But if you want some awesome vintage clothes and don't have time to work your way through 5 goodwills and 3 estate sales a week, come here. Someone else has already taken care of this for you. And because that someone's time is her money, you will have to pay more here.
A couple of years ago I needed a coat and decided that I wanted a heavy, woolly, snugly, fancy, perfect, vintage winter coat of the sort that I'd never have been able to afford new then or now. And I wanted it immediately. So I took my Veruca Salt self down to Xtabay and got one. It took 10 minutes, was an extremely pleasant and fun experience, cost $78 (a great value) and I love it. It was time and money very well spent.
It's taken me 6 months to find one as nice at goodwill. -

So, this place is probably the prime spot for perfect vintage dresses, though mildly unaffordable. The owner is so nice and warm but there has been a couple of times that I have been in there and either a friend or assistant of her's was rudely opinionated. Despite this obnoxious person, the environment is so dreamy and the perfect place to bring your out of town female friends and family. I do wish that they would stock more non-formal dresses, as they did in the past.

Rude staff, I have never had a shop girl treat me so horribly! I came in here with my mother looking for a vintage wedding dress, nothing too fancy, just a white dress and they did not have a single dress for girls a larger then a size 6. Big disappointment for me and my mom :(
When we were about to leave I explained we were only in for the weekend and asked if they would be putting new stock out later since it was only Thursday and if they could call me if they had a dress in my size that was in the white/ivory family. Of course that was WAY to much to ask and she stated I could call them, they would not call me. Then I asked if there was anywhere else in Portland she recommend we looked as my mother and I live half way across the country from each other (I in LA she in Chicago) and were excited to be able to dress shop in the same town. She couldn't be bothered to give us a single recommendation but instead lectured me on how if I want a vintage wedding dress I would need to search multiple stores for it. Yeah like I haven't been doing that for the past 4 months. By the way we were the ONLY customers in the shop on this Thursday afternoon, it's not like she was slammed and we were bugging her.
I left so discouraged and on the verge of tears which sucks because the day I arrived in Portland we went straight to this shop with such high hopes, I will never go to this shop again. -

Xtabay is rad! I love to start with their sale rack and have gotten many an amazing item under 10$!
This store is laid out beautifully and they are one of few vintage stores in town that have a good variety of sizes. Anyone over a size 8 knows how hard vintage sizing can be, and they do a great job keeping really fun things for all! While Xtabay can be pricey they always have great prices on their jewelry.Listed in: Born to Shop

If you're looking for beautiful vintage, look no further. Incredible gowns, dresses for every occasion, coats, furs, purses, shoes, boots, hats, jewelry...and it's all gorgeous. Prices are very reasonable- especially for the quality. You won't find another vintage store like it, it's simply beautiful! I've also consigned items and have been pleasantly surprised with the amount I made on my consignments as well. The only problem I have with Xtabay is that the next time I go in there are things I want more than what I bought the time before! There is always new inventory, and it seems to just keep getting better!
The staff is fantastic, very sweet and helpful. My 13 year old son complained about going there with me until he got there and Gabe (the Pomeranian) was there to play with and there were chocolates and cookies! I was ready to leave before he was! There are great sales fairly regularly and Liz makes them more of an event than just a sale-mimosas and goodies to make the experience even more of a treat. The store smells great from all the wonderful candles too. This store is what I WISH my closet looked like! -

I've always loved the cute Clinton pocket at 26th and Clinton, dominated by the old sign at the Clinton theater and spotted with gems. Appropriately, then, I've always had a special appreciation for Xtabay, the little whole in the wall vintage shop that calls the Clinton Pocket home. Small size always helps in likeability in vintage stores, as the idea of browsing through rack after rack of someone's old clothes can be daunting. Xtabay is small, but well-selected. I've been here a few times shopping for dresses and they always give good advice, too.

I FELL IN LOVE HERE...with a gorgeous, dream-come-true gown in the window. I was on a bike ride one night and we rode past the window of the vintage shop on Clinton street. I came back the next day to try on the gown, even though I can't afford it, nor do I need a GOWN for any reason in my life at this juncture.
The dress fit me perfectly- I love fateful occurances!
It is a frothy concoction of hand dyed lanvendar and gray tulle with a vintage spray of beadwork across the bodice and bust--absolutely breathtaking. The woman at the shop helped zip me into this dream dress and she didn't even mind that I pranced around half naked in the dressing room trying to find shoes to go with it.
I didn't end up buying it, but if I ever end up getting married I am going to try to duplicate this dress, but add pastel rainbow colored tulle under layers of white dreaminess....Ahhhhhh *spinning and collapsing dramatically in a field of daisies and rainbows and butterflies* -

Best vintage clothing store I have ever been to. The owner of this small shop must have gold bar syndrome when she selects clothes. Everything she touches is gold. There was always a well balanced selection of clothing in every size. I think the owner works hard so that there is just as much selction when you are a size 10 or 12 as when you are a size 2 or 4. I don't know about you folks, but I've always found that vintage clothing shopping can feel like you're hunting for the rare item that wasn't made for anorexic midgets from Mars. The shoes, jewelry, and belts are all to die for. I have a friend who found a George Michael t-shirt, another who found the perfect clear 60's umbrella, and I found a BEAUTIFUL vintage dress in orange stripes. The store also has a collection of fine velvet paintings by the same artist, which are unfortunately not for sale.
Also the bearskin rug decorating the shoe section is fabu.Listed in: Portland - O - Rama

EXCELLENT selection of vintage duds in a welcoming boutique-style atmosphere, and right next door to Dot's! Who could ask for anything more? The shoe selection is impressive too. Mostly I'm jealous as hell of the owner's poodle collection on display in the store (but not for sale, dammit!).

I was really impressed with Xtabay. It has such a clean, hip, none-thirft-shop like feel to it (by that, I mean it doesn't smell like basement). I liked the lay out of the store and that the racks were not over stuffed like most second hand shops. The price was a bit high on a 80's Madonna-like dress ($125) I was loving, but the quality was excellent (yet I just couldn't justify the purchase to my husband).

Holy Vintage Heaven! Catherine Deneuve and Audrey Hepburn would be proud. This store has a great variety of cocktail dresses, evening gowns coats, and exquisite 2 piece outfits for any event! From mod casuals to 1940's floor length ball gowns this store covers it all. Also, the prices are really fair, and better than anything you could buy at a department store. My fashion savvy, jet setting friend is in for the weekend and I was in need of impressing her because the weather is not holding up. I found Xtabay here at Yelp so we gave it a try. It is everything the reviews suggested. You walk in and it does not have that over-stocked, mothball feel. The stores is laid out nicely, the clothes are displayed well and while it is not overstocked it takes a few rounds through the store to make sure you don't miss some hidden gem. Needless to say my fashion forward, jet setting friend left Xtabay with several bags.
They get new clothes daily. A great place to find something a little bit new, a little bit old ...
Prices are reasonable as well. -

Beautiful shop with friendly help, this vintage clothing store is like no other I've seen in Portland. The clothes are top quality and reasonably priced. Racks are not jammed full of unclean clothing; respect for the garments show.
Recently, Xtabay has renewed its image in terms of decor and stock. They now feature a lovely line of vintage wedding gowns.
The clothing takes me back to I Love Lucy and That Girl eras in fashion. I remember my mom wearing some of the 70's fashions. I am fashion forward, so to speak, and so am comfortable with the vintage look.
If I were younger, I'd buy my prom dress from Xtabay. If I were to get married fot yet aother time (3!), I'd buy my cream colored wedding gown at Xtabay.
All together, it's the best vintage in Portland. -

I know...why would a guy review a vintage clothing store? Number one, it's near my house. Number two, it's a great store! I haven't been in for a few months, but I bought a handbag as a gift for my sister-in-law a little while ago. The saleswoman was very helpful and the selection was great. One of the things I like most about the store is just driving by. The window display often makes me wonder "Is that dress in my wife's size and would she wear a pink ballgown anytime soon?" I know they just did a renovation to the interior, but I haven't been in since it was done.
