18 reviews for Xebec
Xebec is located on the ground floor of Radisson Hotel, and has a quiet, upscale setting, though the decor is sort of 1990's "modern". Great for business lunches, especially if on the company's tab, but otherwise on the expensive side.
Sandwiches are $10+ and other entrees are in the $18+ range. The menu is all over the place with everything from sushi, American, and Mediterranean items.
We shared the calamari, which was my favorite part of the meal. Liked the freebie bread / aioli as well. My croque monsieur wasn't very impressive- more like a plain ham sandwich than the decadent treat I've enjoyed at other places in the city.
I probably wouldn't go here again unless my company was paying for it. It's sort of typical generic hotel restaurant food, but not that bad considering the culinary wasteland that is South SF and Brisbane.
I have been to Xebec a number of times over the years for various business lunches. The restaurant is located in the Radisson Hotel in Brisbane off of Sierra Point Parkway. The pronunciation of the name is Zee-beck, similar to Xerox.
This time we had out-of-town guests and came here for Valentine's Day dinner. With our large group, this restaurant was the perfect choice. I don't remember everyones dishes, but I had the Ahi Tuna Morrocan style and my husband had the Paella. The Ahi Tuna is seared and served with garbanzo beans in a light sauce. A nice healthy choice that is filling and satisfying. The Paella is served with various seafood served with rice in a steel dish. Also yummy.
For dessert, we had the Chocolate souffle and the Vacherin Glace. The souffle was in the middle of a large place surrounded with a raspberry sauce. The vacherin was 2 sorbets (passion fruit & huckleberry) served with 2 long biscotti cookies and also surrounded with raspberry sauce. Both were surprisingly good.
Don't let the expectation of hotel dining deter you from coming to Xebec. We are pleasantly surprised each time we are there.
I've been here many times for work events. The food is pretty good (nothing spectacular), but the setting is very nice and the service is attentive. Appetizers to try: lamb rolls and prosciutto/fig bruschetta (I know, not a typical bruschetta...) the crab cakes are less successful, but the salads are great. The lamb shank, chicken sandwich, and sushi/sashimi are good entree options as well. I always forget about this place, but am more than happy to go when someone suggests it.
I used to work near the Brisbane Radisson and I've been to Xebec many times. It's a very classy joint with a good full bar and nice patio. They do a sushi lunch hour which is surprisingly good, and the rest of the menu has lots of tasty options (particularly for seafood lovers). The setting is upscale but they're happy to accommodate you in shorts and sandals if that's your thing. Despite the corporate hotel setting, Xebec itself is locally owned and they really try to take care of you. I've met the owner and he's always thinking about ways to make things better. Ask to meet him if you're there and I'm sure he'll be thrilled to receive any comments you have.
I had lunch here today with a former co-worker. The wait staff was friendly and came around the table just enough times. I had the Chicken Manchego Cheese Sandwich on Ciabatta bread. The chicken was grilled perfectly and had a hint of rosemary. The sandwich also had a slice of tomato, lettuce and a grilled portobello. The manchego cheese tied this sandwich very nicely. Only problem was that the portobello would slide around and made it very messy to eat. It also made the sandwich get soggy from all the liquid it would extract. The portion of fries are way to much and would rather of asked for the salad. Just a waist of perfect crispy, airy fries. ($9.95)
Seating is comfortable and the decor is classy. Prices are not bad for being a hotel joint. I would definitely be back again. Seems nice for a dinner date spot.
Our waiter & drink dude were super nice. I don't know their names but they deserve 5 stars for service.
French toast: Very soggy brioche. I didn't quite like that, although their syrup was tasty.
Chicken sausage: I think I prefer mystery pork sausage. Although I've had really amazing chicken sausage before, just not at Xebec.
Home fries: Meh, they were good to eat with my scrambie eggs.
It's decorated nicely. We only had breakfast there. I think what made the experience nicer was cracking up with my family and the staff.
I've eaten at Xebec (located in the Radisson Hotel, Brisbane) twice, and it's just too hit-or-miss to recommend. Yeah, it looks pretty chic and sophisticated - muted lights, intimate atmosphere, "designer"-looking furnishings - but that's about as good as it gets. The service is unbelievably shabby - the two snotty servers I encountered acted like they were doing us a favor by bringing us our food. Mind you, this seems to be pretty standard for California. They were inattentive to drink refills, and a second bowl of sourdough was brought begrudgingly.
I wouldn't really have minded if the food had been worth it, but it was a real mixed bag on both occasions. My peppercorn crusted steak with tarragon sauce, and some kind of frisee salad with bleu cheese was good but way overpriced. Twatface's proscuitto-stuffed chicken was small, tasteless and unappealing. On our second visit 3 months later, I opted for the Ceviche. Seriously disappointing - everything was chopped up into itty bitty pieces, and tasted exactly the same. Prickhead's shrimp linguine was, however, excellent.
If you don't mind taking an over-priced chance, try Xebec. I personally won't be eating there any time soon. It's nowhere near as good as it thinks it is. Oh yeah, and learn to make Tokyo Tea, you morons.
I give it 5 stars, but then again I'm biased; I work here.
How about that raise, George?
Seriously though, best burgers around, kick ass calamari, the best (we're talking fancy schmancy French restaraunt grade) sushi provided by master Sushi Chef Koji.
In for dinner but don't fancy sushi too much? The Lamb shank is pleasantly spicy and exotic and will fill all but the most stout of appetites.
I haven't tried the Prawn Linguini, but it is a crowd pleaser.
Cocktails are very good (unless you get me as the bartender as I'm only supposed to be the server and haven't been properly trained!)
So come say, hi!
I only come here for work-related lunches or after-work happy hours.. aka bitchfests.. mostly because it's the only restaurant in the area. the service is relatively good, tho the food is mediocre for the price you're paying. decor is contemporary.. / dim lighting.. there are some tables outside on the patio. as expected since it's a hotel restaurant in the midst of office buildings,.. the only crowds you'll see are the after-workies., or team lunches...
the menu is a mix of mediterranean/everything else.. the one thing i love is the sauce they have for their bread... delish.. they should sell it in a jar.. some sorta sun dried tomato/olive oil/ etc mix..
i would venture elsewhere for happy hours.., but if it's lunch and you can't stream that game on your work computer, i'd get my butt over here since it's the closest place with a bar/flat screen..
garlic curly fries.. potent.. my breath smells bad for hours on end.
Great for happy hour, mediocre food. Way overpriced. I worked across the street, so it was very convenient for a few drinks after work, but not much else.
I lived at the hotel it's in for a month when my husband was transferred for work as well, and they do have a good breakfast as well. Overpriced, but most hotel restaurants are.
So you're marooned in Brisbane (NOT /Bris-bun/, QLD, but /Bris-bayne/, I've-lived-in-the-Bay-Area-10-years-and-still-don' t-know-where-it-is-even-though-I've-driven-through -a-gazillian-times) looking for some good food. Emphasis on good -- not the tolerable, eat-to-live kind, but the decent, live-to-eat variety. You don't have a lot of choices. In fact, exactly one : Xebec, the Calfornian cum Mediterranean hotel restaurant in the Radisson.
Service might be slow, waitstaff might be out to get you (if you come with someone who they don't like), menu might be diminutive, but you can't complain about the food. And the best dish isn't even on the menu, it's the tomato sauce served with the complimentary bread.
In my two and a half years of working in bio-tech row, I have never ventured into Xebec until recently to have a business / bitch-fest lunch with one of my co-workers. I know I have sent my boss and job candidates here for lunch interviews so I knew it had to be a step up from the typical places around the area.
The decor is modern with lots of deep blues, maroon and purple. A bit dark but spacious. Like that there is outdoor seating for those rare days when it's not windy in the area. The bar looks like a great place to unwind after a day on the job.Service was attentive. My glass of iced tea was always full and we were asked by many people how our meal was going.
The food was okay a bit bland for me. I ordered the half Xebec salad and the croquet monsieur. The salad consisted of field greens, marinated artichokes, sauteed mushrooms and a light vinaigrette. My croquet monsieur was grilled to perfection with swiss cheese and ham served with fries. Portions were real big. The dessert menu looked tempting but we were both full and needed to return to the office.
I wouldn't rush to come back but know that it's a fall back restaurant if i need one in a hurry.
I have eaten at Xebec five or six times while staying at the hotel it's in. As some other reviewers have said, the sushi is very, very good. However, there are too many other factors that force me to bestow only three stars.
The food other than the sushi might rate three and a half stars, but the service is where they stumble. I have only ever had two different servers; one was definitely on the lame end of the spectrum and the other seemed nice and professional enough but didn't seem to get a lot of what being a server is about (like having to be told to bring me more water when my glass was empty, bringing courses almost immediately after each other, etc.) Of course some of this might be due to other staff members. On one occasion I literally waited for 50-55 minutes between the miso soup and the sushi. Even though it was good when it got there, the place was nowhere near busy enough to explain that kind of delay.
If you're in a risk-taking mood and you like sushi, give Xebec a try. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE SUSHI BAR
This place serves up some seriously good sushi. I never thought of going here until my boss took me. The real trick is to just ask the sushi chef for his reco.
Everything was fresh. The uni, unagi and yellow tail were the stand outs. When I was there, he was cutting up a piece of yellow tail that was just flown in. If they have it, they'll prepare the cheeks of the yellow tail for you.
I know you don't believe me. I know you think I'm crazy. Just go. Go and sit at the sushi bar. Ask the chef what's good. You will not be disappointed.
I can't believe this place exists in the Radisson. The friggin Radisson!
For Corporate kitsch, there is no place like The Rad. The drinks are sweet and uneven. The service is sweet and uneven. But you're in The City of Stars. So you adjust your standards, put on your people-watching goggles and marvel that you are indeed bending your elbow at a Radisson in Brisbane.
I went here for a business lunch, and it was just one thing after another. The free bread with tomato/olive dip was good, but that's about it. The food took forever to come, and while we were waiting the waiter dropped a glass on one of my colleagues. Eventually, it took so long that we had to switch our order and make it to go. The food was so-so, but I guess they just bank on the fact that there's really not many other places to eat nearby.
If you're ever stuck in Brisbane on business, or are so tired you can't drive 7 miles further into San Francisco on the fear that you'll plow into a small Hyundai or expensive European import then you might be staying at the Radisson and chances are you'll venture down into Xebec Bar & Restaurant.
They recently turned into a Mediterranean/Asian fusion restaurant (go figure) offering sushi and small plates using middle eastern spices combined with Japanese-set dishes. The portions are decent, they have a great salad with truffles, and their mains are fairly well-prepared as well.
My oysters, when I asked, were bluetooths (haha) and i said 'Do you mean bluepoints ?' so that gives you an idea. However, the vinegar/horseradish combo went well with it.
They do takeout, you just have to pick it up. They also have a decent bar if you feel up to chatting with fellow transients. I'm glad it's there, because there's only so many choices in Brisbane to have lunch or dinner at.
Xebec is a safe bet for Brisbane-South City business dining. Your boss certainly won't fire you if you host your next team-building luncheon here. The restaurant is located inside the South SF Radisson Hotel, in close proximity to all those corporate glass cubes visible from the 101 north of SFO. Service is quite good and kitchen execution is respectable. However, if your meal does not revolve around a power point presentation or job interview, I'd venture elsewhere.
