Bring on the sweet potato fries!
The food is good, and the big bright and airy dining room is lovely. I dig this place.
I'm suprised at the spotty reviews. This place doesn't have the best service or the best prices, but every time I've come here the food is really good. Try the fried calamari or the pork sliders! Awesome. For the healthy peeps, get a salad. Any salad. They are soo good that it almost doesn't seem healthy for you. We always come to this place if we don't eat at newcombs, on our ritual ride up the crest. BTW, They have a 10% neighbor discount if your on a bike.

Not impressed at all. Weird service, a little greasy, dingy place. Don't bother....brought the toast 10 minutes before the food. Its one of those type places.
After viewing the Showcase House in La Canada, my mother, sister, her girlfriend and myself met an aunt here. The seating was extrememly quick and friendly. Our server was professional and fast. Drinks came quickly. When my aunt came, once again the server was there taking her beverage, a few minutes later he took our orders. We all had salads, you can have a small on or large. The curry chicken was wonderful. The bill came quickly as well. The decor was a little bland but that was because I remember the good old days in the 70's when it was Reflections and they had bands including my brothers. If I lived in La Canada, I would definitley hit their bar in the other separate room with tables. Would come back again.
Don't be fooled by 1 star, the food was probably a 3 -4 star.
Went there for breakfast this morning, really darling place, and then our waitress showed up,,,,,,and disappeared.....and disappeared... the saving grace is that the food was great (I could have eaten my body weight in the bread - fantastic!!!) the omlette was wonderful, but our server was a piece of work. At one point we had to flag down another waiter, made a reference to our waitress, he said - "don't leave her a tib" - I don't think he was saying this in a snarky way, I think he mean't it.
Purely based on the food , I will go again, I would recommend it just be prepared for snotty servers

What's happened to DISH?
This has been a regular breakfast haunt of ours for years. The menu is wonderful, the food is usually terrific and the wait staff really nice.
But not today.
Our waiter was blissfully unaware of our presence for quite some time after we'd been seated. And after he took our order, he remained that way. No coffee. For quite some time. I finally got up to forage for coffee myself. TWICE. When the food arrived, the eggs were underdone (ew) and the rest of it just did not knock my socks off, like it usually does. Uninspired, and uninspiring.
The coffee, it turned out, was slow due to them being out of mugs. Which I might have thought would get us a goodwill gesture in knocking the coffee off our tab. But no.
Also -- they've acquired a B rating sometime in the recent past. Hmmm.
I asked as we were leaving if there had been a change of ownership -- the whole experience was so different than before. There hasn't been, but the chef is new. Judging by today, he doesn't have his heart in this job.
We'll go back. But if next time is like it was today... nevermore.

"LL Bean Gone Wild!"
If you're a casting agent and you need to find people who look like average La Canada Citizens, then you need look no further than DISH. I have nothing against La Canada/Flintridge. As a matter of fact, I attended a school down the street from DISH called Flintridge Prep. Hey, these are my peeps. But all of my La Canada friends and family looked exactly like every customer and wait staff at DISH. The staff are so polite that it's spooky. The customers are mainly Caucasian and when you walk in, people give you that side glance, trying not to stare, but they want to know if you're a Pasadena foreigner or (GASP!), from Tujunga. Everyone's well groomed, attractive, and they are all dressed as if they pillaged an LL Bean Store. That means white or light blue Oxford shirts, light tan khaki pants, and of course, a matching belt. Ahhhh. The safety of good looking people who seem like they're fresh from a family portrait sitting in the park.
Of course, La Canada/Flintridge is an upper middle class (and beyond) enclave, so it seems only logical that LL Bean has determined their dress code. But as I recall, all my La Canada/Flintridge friends were soooo nice. Don't get me wrong. I had some truly great friends who were about as down-to-earth as a pair of Earth shoes, but there's a certain "look" that they can't help. Not Stepford. Not Pasadena. It's purely La Canada. Anyway, I love La Canada and nearly everyone in it, but eating at DISH always gives me flashbacks to high school. But, that's not why my wife (Jane) and I were there. Let's talk food and service.
DISH is one of those places that works by focusing on fairly simple foods, served fresh, and served with a well dressed smile. Although I spotted some sour reviews about DISH service, everything has been great for us. Friendly and attentive, all topped with sincere eye contact and dialog in full sentences. Within minutes of sitting, an older guy (who takes busing tables way too seriously) plopped a warm bread basket with one of those tiny butter topped cups. Two perfectly toasted sour dough rolls were nestling under the folds. Later, I found out why the bread was better than average. 3 words. La Brea Bakery. I ordered the La Brea Bakery mini bun burger appetizer. Tasty tidbits! 3 juicy little cheeseburgers each stuffed into it's own La Brea bakery mini-bun. Unfortunately, they were a bit wasted on a one-bite-and-swallow-without-chewing pig like me. As tasty as they were, the mini-burgers can't figure out who is the star. The meat, or the bun. Personally, I feel that the bun should always play 2nd and not detract from the focus; let the bun play the lead when it's in a bread basket. My main was a dinner sized Cesar. Avocado, chicken or salmon can be added for +$. I chose the avocado. The salad was very good, no browned edges on the lettuce, fresh croutons, and the dressing was flavorful, although not perfectly authentic. At least it wasn't the far too common Cesar dressing that tastes like it was mixed in a 20 gallon fish tank. The one with that weird "salad green" preservative spray mixed in. Jane ordered the veggie burger and loved it. Her comment was that the patty tasted like it was homemade and patted by hand. In a good way. And, that the flavor had just a little spice kick to it that kept it from being boring. We were in a bit of a rush, so we couldn't dig-in with a dessert, but our server graciously tended to our request for a hastened bill and thanked us as we left.
All-in-all, another good experience at DISH. But if LL Bean makes you nervous, then ask for a window seat and avert your eyes. You'll otherwise be blinded by deck shoes.

Always on the search for new places to dine, I suggested to my lovely wife that we try this place I saw on the ol' Yelp. So we headed up the 2 freeway to La Caada (I like to joke that it's Spanish for The Canada...yes, it's funny every time) to check out Dish.
The place was packed at 11 o'clock (we got lucky in their modest parking lot since someone was pulling out as we pulled in) and we waited about 15 minutes for a table, 10 minutes less than promised. As we waited for a table and for service, we took in the country atmosphere which reminded me of our honeymoon up the coast. We dined in more than a few places with this aesthetic and always enjoyed it. It's sort of weird to experience this in Los Angeles but then again La Caada isn't quite LA.
We were slightly early for lunch but the nice server accomodated us as best she could. I went ahead and ordered breakfast, the eggs benedict with hash browns, and Lindsey ordered a tuna salad sandwich with a side of their red roasted potatoes. (It was too early for fries.) Tuna salad's always a crap shoot but Linds rolled a seven and loved her sandwich. I can't say I've ever had a bad eggs benedict so Dish's version was about par. The eggs were slightly over-cooked and the ham was maybe a little saltier than I care for, but I still managed to not leave a single crumb of food on my plate.
The place was family friendly. Kids could be seen playing face down on Dish's hardwood floors. (I never understood parents who let their kids play on the floors of public places. Just seems so dirty.)
Overall, a pleasant experience. We probably waited a tad longer than we would have liked for our food, but it hit the spot and most days that's all I can ask for. The teenagers with bedhead who greeted guests were polite and the two servers we encountered were also very nice. Just expect to wait.

I agree that:
there wasn't a single person working there that was "unattractive" (my bf couldn't get his eyes of the waiters' arms).
every time I go, it seems that I'm five minutes past their cut off for breakfast (Hollywood, stay home!)
The main restaurant looks like a renovated 19th century barn, a large curved room covered with a huge, slopping, beamed roof, all painted white. The layout consists of banquettes and tables on polished hardwood floors, against a blue walled background and large plate glass windows, creating a nice feeling of space and wamth. The bar area is a standard room with low ceilings and a decent sized bar with a smallish TV.
they have good coffee as well (I can only speak for the cappucino ask them to hold the cinnamon if you don't like it).
go up Foothill to Hill Street Cafe (there was a line out front and they're still serving breakfast)
it was busy with a bunch of either middle aged white people or white thirtysomethings & their obnoxious white kids (guilty, but this is the suburbs).
and this other waiter came up to our table four (4!) times to refill the pepper, then the salt, then the sugar packets, then the sugar container, without even looking at us (what's up with that?)
Applewood-smoked bacon cheeseburger (with blue cheeze bits. secret: you can order it med rare...don't tell the Health Dept. and dang the B on the window, rare meaty enough to gimme a good ole tummy ache, you remember those from back in the day but it doesn't stop you from devouring every meaty bite and the La Brea bun too).
my lovely wife My buddy the sweet, young hostesses the little lady it is kinda an old people's joint (so, is it yours?)
I came here for brunch with several friends when we were all home visiting our families for the holidays. For La Canada, it's passable. Compared to what you can get in the rest of the world, it's pretty awful.
First off, the decor inside is dark and reminiscent of the 80s - not quite what you'd expect for a restaurant that looks homey from the outside. Second, my omelet was dry and uninventive and we had to send back the smoked salmon benedict because it came out cold, as if it had been sitting out for a long time. Just FYI - hollandaise sauce for eggs benedict is made with undercooked eggs and shouldn't be out for too long because you can get really really sick from that. Third of all, our food came out at different times, at different temperatures. Our waitress was completely unavailable - for example, she barely even re-filled our water glasses and coffee. And, when we tried to send back the smoked salmon benedict, she was completely unaccommodating and basically refused.
Do yourself a favor and grab a bagel at Goldsteins or head to Marston's in Pasadena instead of going to Dish.

Our waitress was pretty stereotypical. Probably a washed up actress. Really indifferent and annoyed that we were there. My table had a long time to discuss if her boobs were real or not while we waited for our food. Then they got my order totally wrong, so I had even more time to wait.
Also, a note to the management: If you run out of size small glasses, just fill the large ones all the way to the top and comp us for the large OJ. It's frickin So Cal and I see people selling oranges on the side of the road for like a nickel.

When this place is not busy, it's one of my fave spots....
GOOD FOOD
GOOD DRINKS
When it's busy, the service and food can be compromised, but it is still good enough that I go back.
If you're lucky enough to have Shannon as ur bartender, you KNOW the drinks are gonna be THE BOMB! haha!
I JUST DISCOVERED their HAppy Hour....HOLY LORD! M-F, 4-7p....half off all appetizers and ALL drinks! i stuffed myself and had a fantastic buzz for $26!! Twenty six bux for 2 ppl??????? WOW!! i tipped on $52, tho...and I hope the rest of you guys do that as well when it is discounted prices (it's not like the bartender worked any less).
One thing I am sad about, is they took the Portobello Sandwich off the menu....
but all the burgers, breakfast items, and appetizers are REALLY good.
I DO recommend sitting at the bar when there is a crowd, bc it's full menu and u can always find at least 2 seats.
Hope this helps!

Apparently DISH has the best breakfast in LA, although I can't comment on that because every time I go, it seems that I'm five minutes past their cut off for breakfast. Someday I will know.
I can however comment on their Cream of Mushroom soup, which is hands-down, the BEST I've ever had.
They also have a really good homemade veggie-burger. It is huge, so be hungry if you order it.
Sometimes I like to come here and pretend I'm dining in the belly of a whale. You'll know what I mean.

A quaint and charming decor that is unfortunately not matched by the cuisine. I have eaten here twice, and both times the level of the company made up for the lackluster food.
We stopped by today after a lovely hike up the Arroyo Seco starting at JPL in Atadena. This is one of the best hikes in LA, relatively easy, lounging a pretty river that generally runs all year, and is for the most part covered by trees, creating a nice, shady walk. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries and a house salad on the side. My companions ordered a curried chicken salad and a vegeable plate. While they seemed pleased with theirs, I found the pork itself to be bland, and the bbq sauce it was smothered in tasting like standard issue fast food fare. The salad was fresh enough but the vinaigrette dressing flavorless. The only good part were the sweet potato fries, crispy and lushly tasty. I have become an spf fan, and now order them whenever I can.
But the space is nice and inviting, and though I am not often in La Canada, I would go back for that reason. Perhaps I will find a dish that shines, as I am asured by my companions that there are plenty.

what a gem! such a cute lil brunch place. i had their roasted turkey sandwich. i had to take some of the turkey out b/c they give you so much! i didn't try it but the sweet potato fries looked sooo good. the service was a bit slow. this place is definitely a trek from where i live but a good place to meet up with a friend if you're in the hood.
I found this place a gem. I think the manager/owner whoever has good taste, they've done a great job with the design of the place, and I noticed there wasn't a single person working there that was "unattractive", which was funny, and cool. The menu was great, and I ended having the Garlic Cheeseburger with sweet potato fries, and since I was eating with others, I also got to taste the goat cheese red pepper sandwich, and the mac and cheese... well, it was all delicious. The mac and cheese was amazing, big props! My waitress was super nice and helpful, and the cook brought the food out and was awesome. I am going to go back to DISH sometime, because it left me happy and feeling like I just ate a wonderful meal. I am also curious about an evening at DISH, they had a really awesome looking bar, and I'd love to see what it's like at night, also curious if the crowd is as attractive as the staff...

What adds to the 5 stars is the cute seating and the feel of the whole place as well as good service without being too overbearing in the morning!

Dish pretty much is the only breakfast place in town besides Hill Street Cafe but it doesn't do much better at all. My mother and I recently decided to give it a try despite the fact that the acoustics in Dish's building are god awful and you can hardly hear yourself think!
Our service was mediocre at best and I practically had to beg to get a refill on my coffee and water. I ordered the Tomatoe basil omelette with egg whites and it came burnt (which sucks) and the hash browns might as well have been shredded potatoes because they weren't hot, weren't crispy and weren't even browned.
My mother's Denver omelette was piss poor and was actually BROWN in color. I am assuming that the eggs were either mixed with food coloring, or cooked in a dirty pan because from what I remember a Denver omelette is yellow with pink pieces of ham inside. NOT BROWN.
Anyhow....this place pretty much sucks, go up Foothill to Hill Street Cafe and order the "Eggs San Francisco"

Breakfast sure is a popular meal here in L.A. county. I definitely wouldn't say this place has the 'best breakfast in L.A.', but whatever.
As you walk in the door, it's very loud inside. VERY LOUD. There was a 15 minute wait because it was very busy, which is a good sign, but it was busy with a bunch of either middle aged white people or white thirtysomethings & their obnoxious white kids just roaming from the bar to the dinning room like they were on a cruise ship. There was even this one dude (white) who had on Bermuda shorts, a Hawaiian shirt, flip flops, & sunglasses (INSIDE) who was just sauntering around, like he was waiting for shuffle board to start.
Our waitress was slow. That's really all I can say about that.
The food was alright. I went with lunch instead of breakfast because their breakfast menu was incredibly boring compared to their regular menu. I ordered the tuna melt & a side salad with green goddess dressing. The tuna melt was pretty fantastic (especially when dipped in Cholula sauce) but the salad had almost no dressing. :(
I assume that my breakfast date liked his sunny eggs, wheat toast, tomato slices, & cottage cheese, because it was gone by the time I was on to the other half of my sammich.
All in all, the service was slow, the atmosphere is weird (mostly because of the patrons) & the food is better than average.
I wouldn't recommend this place for a first date, unless you really don't want to talk to your date. Not intimate at all.

Well of course I have to give DISH five stars because I sorta work there. So this is my disclaimer.
But seriously, I went in for the first time as a customer the other day and loved it. Now I don't really know everyone there yet, so don't think I was getting preferential treatment. But I came in on a Sunday morning, wait time was insane but I called ahead and made a reservation. FYI- you have to give at least an hour notice for reservations. And if you're actually planning to go on a Sunday morning, definitely try to make reservations a day or two in advance. And if you're trying to go on a Sunday morning with more than 4 people I'd seriously, SERIOUSLY do the reservation as most of the tables seat four at most comfortably.
Now the food. I had the brie and bacon omelette and could have died from cheese coma. In a good way. I love cheese, and I really love brie. Came with hashed browns and toast. Coffee was very good and mimosas have fresh squeezed juice. Breakfast entrees run about 9-10 bucks each, which is cheaper than IHOP might I add.
The pumpkin pancakes sometimes sell out because they are soo good (with whipped cream...mmmm....). JOhnny cakes are awesome as well.
SO go!
I went here on a Sunday night for dinner with friends. The restaurant is cute inside, but was far from full. After reading the Yelp reviews, I decided to get their ribs, which were really good! The meat came right off the bone. My dish came with a whole corn on the cob, mac and cheese, and this tomato/onion salad thing. For whatever reason, my dish came with a lot more food than everyone else's.
I tried my bf's porkchops and they were so dry. No one else's dish looked as appealing as mine. If my dining companions enjoyed their meal as much as I did, I would have rated this place higher. They're known for their breakfast, so maybe I'll have to return in the a.m. sometime. I will re-rate as appropriate.
UPDATE 10/25/07: I returned for breakfast and it was good, so I upped it to 4 stars now, instead of the original 3. I received a coupon in the mail for buy one, get one breakfast entree free, so it was the perfect time to retry this place. The spinach and mushroom omelette was good. My sister and I shared a short stack of banana pancakes, which were delicious. We decided that their breakfast is decent, but that it's also hard to screw up breakfast. Our toaster wouldn't stay down, so I had to hold the lever until it was done. Even after telling the waitress, no one came to fix it or switch it out. Also, important note- we went on a weekday at 10:30am, so it wasn't too busy.

I wrote in my post for Cafe Sole (also in La Canada) that I have always disliked Dish. But my former high school counselor said that it's changed, I should go back, it's a great place.
So I went back, twice in one week. The verdict? Good menu, great specials, pretty bad service. I went for lunch, when the owner was there, and service was barely passable. I went for dinner, when the owner was not there, and the service was just awful.
It's a shame that a restaurant with such potential to be a great neighborhood joint is undermined by the wait staff, coddled, suburban, and without pride in their work as they are. I mean, I'm from the Bubble, but that doesn't mean I'm too spoiled to, my gosh, care about customer service even if I'm being paid minimum wage. I'm grumbly, I know, but I hate it when good food, like garlic cheeseburgers and tuna with heirloom tomato relish, gets ruined by some high school senior with an attitude problem. At dinner, we sat there for twelve (12!) minutes in a mostly empty restaurant, without so much as a drink order, and this other waiter came up to our table four (4!) times to refill the pepper, then the salt, then the sugar packets, then the sugar container, without even looking at us, or even saying, "your waiter will be right with you."
So, I haven't been to their famed breakfast, and maybe the owner knows to keep his spoiled staff on lock down at crunch time, but my feeling is, you should go if you are a risk-seeker who likes good, seasonal, reasonably priced specials MAYBE delivered by a slow-poke snot-nosed teenager.

Applewood-smoked bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries and ginger ale, my one reason for coming here (okay, that and the sweet, young hostesses [yet may I add that they are but kind reminders of my youth; NOTHING is as lovely as a mature and thoughtful woman]) .
How do you rate a burger? Well, who knows, but this is the only one I seem to eat these days. A nice, thick patty, a bit dense but juicy and flavorful; tree trunk-sized red onion; dark, leafy lettuce; coarse dijon mustard; the obligatory slices of beefsteak tomato and melted cheddar cheese, and the blow of mercy: smoky, salty bacon strips, criss-crossed over the cheesy disc, all on a pedestrian sesame-seed bun.
The fries are another treat, sweet and salted, a wonderful compliment.
Okay, do I feel like somewhat of a fop for eating it with a fork and knife? Hell yes, but at least there ain't no avocado on it.

For breakfast the fresh spinach and mushroom omelet with hash browns and the belgian waffles with fresh strawberries were awesome. The down fall of this cute little place was the slow service and it took longer than usual to get our food.
I've gone to this place for dinner several times with my family, and it's great! Though they're not famous for ribs, they are awesome, as are their salads. All at very reasonable prices in a homely themed welcoming environment. Good service is a big plus! Once they had run out of my favorite dish (ribs) and they gave me a free dessert item. And if you still have room for dessert, their bread pudding is awesome. MMmmm.
The only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was because I think they changed their main chef for dinner, as the food was not as exceptional as I remembered. But still very delicious.

I can't believe Dish isn't hitting 4-5 stars all around! I read somewhere that Dish was voted one of the best breakfast restaurants in L.A.. Because of that, my lady and I cruised up to La Canada to have a look-see. We now go almost every Sunday morning for breakfast. I've been hitting the waffle pretty hard; the little lady hits whatever her widdo tummy is roaring for.
#1 The prices are very agreeable for LA. I would easily pay double the bill and not grumble much.
Breakfast Menu:
http://dishbreakfastlu...
#2 We've never had bad service. In fact, our waitress remembered us after only our first visit. She stops by to say hello every time we stop in.
#3 The atmosphere and decor is pleasant and cozy. Think old craftsman house in New England. Feels to me like an escape from the big city. The booths have toasters right on the table. Noyce!
Granted, I've only been to Dish for breakfast. We've been meaning to try them for lunch/dinner, but haven't had a chance just yet. This may be due to our stumbling upon Georgee's Pizza which is right next door. Another nice find I'll be yelping about...

My buddy Steve came over to help me hang pictures at my new place this weekend. After we were done, we decided to grab some grub and ended up at Dish in La Canada.
Turns out this place is all bark and no bite. The have a great sign, a tasty sounding menu, and a interesting room.
This is all to no avail, as they failed on almost all counts. In an effort to be concise, I will just give you a bulleted list.
* Getting Seated - even though the place was almost empty, another group of people and us waited about 5min. before anyone even spoke to us. After that it was another 5min. to get seated.
* Ordering - they were out of two specials and at least one regular menu item
* Beef & Barley Soup - this was basically salt porridge. Campbell's is better.
* Mac & Cheese - not very cheesy with a watery and salty sauce
* Penne with Sausage - this was perfectly serviceable, but nothing special
* Drinks - Steve ordered the drink special, a Mint Julep. With the promise of fresh mint, I opted for a mojito. Both drinks were basically well alcohol over ice with a sprig of mint on top. Quite awful. We hardly touched them.
* Strawberry Shortcake - this was pretty icky too. Decent strawberries, but the shortcake tasted like a store bought scone heated up in a microwave.
* Bathroom - Their men's room was a completely disgusting in ways that I don't care to mention. Use your imagination.
In short - I will not make a another visit to Dish, even under duress.

Spacious, small-town-feel restaurant.
The meals were unique and good. Seemed very healthy. That is, they provided what appeared to be homemade jam, which I suspect is not loaded with all kind of high-fructose corn syrups and other nasties.
I read someone else's comment on the service and from my visit I don't agree. There was one time when we commented they were slow to take our order, but except for that, we got our food quickly, we got our bill left and picked up quickly, our drinks were refilled regularly...
This place is pretty good. Had some goat cheese and mushroom omelette and was satisfied. The service could use some work. Our server constantly had to ask who ordered what. But other than that it was pretty good.

food was good, service was slow. Nice menu items. Nothing "WOW" but I will go back.

Ooohh...a toaster at every table! That way the toast is always done exactly how you like it. Comfy atmosphere. Servers make sure your coffee cup is always full. Good, solid breakfast choices.

Come on people this place sucks! Really bad service, only so so food. We parked in the parking lot and came in what we thought was the front door. We stood there for about five minutes trying to get one of 4 servers attention, they even made eye contact a few times. Finally the bar tender pointed us Around a corner where we found the "hostess". I stepped up to the hostess and said hello and was met with a blank stair for a few seconds. After that I said can we get a table please? She still stared at me so again I asked if I could get a table. She finally said "oh, Yeah sure" and took us to a table. Then we waited quite a while for some one to bring our menus... and then even longer to place our order only after I stared down about 5 different servers. It wasn't as if they were incredibly busy either. There was at least one server running around for every two or three tables. Come on people. Then to top it all off the food was only so so. We drove way out of our way to come try this so called " best breakfast around" WHAT A JOKE!
